UGA’s Sturdivant tears ACL in right knee

For the third time in his college football career, Georgia offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant has suffered a major knee injury.

Sturdivant

Sturdivant

Sturdivant, who twice previously tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, sustained the same injury to his right knee during Saturday’s closed scrimmage in Sanford Stadium, UGA said Sunday after diagnostic tests.

Sturdivant will undergo surgery to repair the ACL “sometime this week” and is expected to conduct his rehabilitation at UGA, according to assistant athletic director for sports medicine Ron Courson.

Sturdivant would be a fifth-year senior in the fall, and Georgia did not say if the latest injury will cost him the season or end his college football career, deferring those topics until after the surgery.

However, based on the rehabilitation time required from his two previous knee surgeries, a return in the 2011 season would be unlikely.  According to mayoclinic.com, athletes who successfully rehab from ACL surgery “often can return to their sports after six to 12 months.”

If Sturdivant misses the 2011 season, he conceivably could petition the NCAA for a  sixth year of eligibility to play in 2012. Student-athletes who miss two or more seasons because of injury sometimes are allowed a sixth year.

Sturdivant was a freshman All-American in 2007, when he started all 13 games for the Bulldogs at left tackle, but he missed the entire 2008 season after tearing the ACL and two other ligaments in his left knee during a preseason scrimmage. He returned to start the opening game of the 2009 season but again tore the left ACL in that game and missed the remainder of the season. He fought back to play last season, appearing in 12 games and starting seven at left tackle.

Sturdivant considered entering the NFL draft this year but “came to the conclusion it’d be best for me to stay here,” he said in a January interview. One reason, he said at the time, was “to make the GMs in the NFL feel more comfortable about drafting someone with two ACL [surgeries].”

Sturdivant and converted guard Cordy Glenn had been alternating between left and right tackles during spring practice.  Other options at tackle include A.J. Harmon, Austin Long, Kolton Houston and Brent Benedict. Or another player, perhaps Kenarious Gates or Justin Anderson, could be shifted from guard.

Wow, you gotta feel nothing but bad for the guy. Hopefully some NFL team will take a shot on him regardless. Either way at least he’s got an education.

Comes from a lack of stretching. Obviously wasn’t flexible but hey, how many lineman are? Feel badd for him. I thought this would be his year to shine. The backup needs to step up now.

Thanks for all the hard work you have put in in Athens.

Best of luck, and get that degree. Do what makes you happy. All the pompous comments below this one mean nothing.

He may qualify for a medical Redshirt, but at this point thats of least importance…Hope he can come back and have a chance for the NFL..but with 3 ACL tears, the NFL, I am afraid will shy away…Hope I’m wrong…go Trinton…we wish you well…

I’m so incredibly sorry for Trinton . . . this is his right knee which is his first tear so he may still have a shot to play again in the pros. It’s not over.

This is a really sad way for any athlete to start his senior year. Hate to see this to a potential NFL player .But maybe you should blame your buddy Jeff Schultz. His headline last week about taunting USC for Garcia’s binges certainly didnt help. They always say What comes around goes around.

UGA 05′….

You stretch muscles to prevent injury, Ligaments are for stabilization and when they are “stretched” they tear. Ligament tears are caused by the mechanism of injury and not ones’ shape/durability

This is directly on the new line coach. Switching Sturdivant to right tackle troubled his confidence and led to this injury. The other two were left leg.

First I am a Tech fan. Second, I feel bad for the guy. I really think if he had been healthy for his career at UGA the line would have been dominant (or more so) than they displayed. Best of luck to him as he recovers.

Delta Stewardess shows no class! This kid showed heart and guts to attempt to comeback as many times as he did. Shows the true spirit of a fine Dawg overcoming obstacles to chase his dream. Would have been nice if some of these hater losers had at least had a worthwhile goal in their life. Look for Sturdivant to achieve without the help of anyone else. He has surely proven himself so far. The Dawg Nation is proud of you T.S.! Go Dawgs.

UGA05,

OBVIOUSLY, you never played football. Sure stretching is important but most knee injuries are caused from somebody hitting you in the knee in which case stretching would not help.

I hate to hear it. It has got to be devastating to him after all he’s been through. As far as UGA is concerned, though, plug in the next man and carry on. No time for excuses. BTW I’ve often wondered if all the weight that O-linemen are asked to carry exacerbates knee problems.

Trinton,

Not at all trying to gloss over a demoralizing injury…

However, should you begin to get too depressed over this, just head down to the Atlanta VA Hospital and witness those disabled veterans without arms or legs or head over to Shepherd Spinal Center to see a few quadriplegics and you feel some instant gratitude for your legs as they are…you can walk in and out of both places!

Best wishes for your future…with or without the pads on!

NO. this is his 3rd knee injury. How many times did your mom tell you the oven eye was hot and not to touch it? After you didn’t listen the first time and received a burn. You grabbed the hot eye how many more times?

Actually I am a UGA GRAD for those of you that have not been on the blog to know better. I hate how UGA uses these kids and throws them away. I hope Trinton was taking classes in a VALUABLE field. I have a BFA thank you very much. I do not like our players hurt, used, or the be classless. I told you all FOOTBALL STUPID fan that Mr. Sturdivant should have stopped 2 years ago for his own good. BUT NO. All you fans just wanted him to risk more to play for the Red & Black. I know most of you will not care about him within the next 4 years.

I feel so bad for him and I’m just hoping that he has the support system he needs to get through this. He came back after 2 injuries but the 3rd time is the charm. His football career is more than likely over now BUT luckily he has the smarts, heart/dedication and great abilities off the field to be very successful no matter what he does. He’s studying Banking/Finance along with Business Management and is very intelligent. He knew even before that first injury that although he’s very confident in his abilities on the field, nothing is guaranteed.

Trinton had the potential to be the best offensive lineman ever to play at UGA. I really hate this for him. That kid has really been tested mentally, faithfully and physically. From what I have witnessed he will be fine whatever the outcome is. He is a class act.
