18 players miss Dogs’ scrimmage with injuries

ATHENS – Georgia’s football team held its next-to-last scrimmage of spring practice Saturday morning in Sanford Stadium.
Well, some of the team did, anyway.
Eighteen players were sidelined by various injuries — a reflection of a grueling spring of physical practices.
At least five projected defensive starters were among those not participating: cornerback Brandon Boykin, safety Bacarri Rambo, cornerback/safety Sanders Commings and inside linebackers Christian Robinson and Alec Ogletree. Boykin, Commings and Robinson were sidelined because of concussions, Rambo because of a sprained knee ligament and Ogletree because of a strained groin.
The scrimmage was closed to the public and media, but statistics provided afterward by coach Mark Richt revealed that the Bulldogs had more success throwing than running — or, if you prefer to look at it the other way, more success stopping the run than stopping the pass.
Richt reported that the quarterbacks threw five touchdown passes -– three by backup Hutson Mason and one apiece by starter Aaron Murray and freshman Christian LeMay –- but that the top rusher, tailback Carlton Thomas, had just 26 yards on eight carries.
“Not much in the way of running the ball,” Richt said, “but the guys [pass-]protected pretty good, threw and caught pretty good.”
Of course, they were throwing and catching against an injury-depleted secondary.
“When you compete the way we’ve been competing and hit the way we’ve been hitting, there’s going to be some [injuries],” Richt said. “But my goal this spring was to make sure we’re a physical football team and a team that will get after it every time we put pads on. And I have seen that.”
Said wide receiver Tavarres King: “We’re out there grinding. It’s been a pretty rough spring, but we needed it. I feel like we needed it to get back to where we need to be.”
Richt said he expects “a bunch” of the injured players back at practice next week, including tailback Washaun Ealey, who has been sidelined most of the spring with a strained hamstring.

More details from the scrimmage:
- Murray completed 11 of 16 passes for 125 yards, Mason 12 of 19 for 192 and LeMay two of two for 67. LeMay and Michael Bennett connected on a 66-yard touchdown — “a broken play but those count too,” Richt said.
- Caleb King was limited to 16 yards rushing on seven carries, and another tailback, Ken Malcome, was held out because of a groin injury that has bothered him all spring.
- Shawn Williams, the only scholarship safety participating, and Richard Samuel, working as a first-team inside linebacker, led the defense with seven tackles apiece.
- Outside linebacker Chase Vasser had a productive day: four tackles, an interception, a sack and a pass breakup.
G-Day format
Georgia will have three more practices –- Monday, Tuesday and Thursday –- before wrapping up the spring with the annual G-Day intra-squad game at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sanford Stadium.
Richt plans a new method of choosing sides for the spring game. In the past, coaches have chosen the squads, generally putting the first-string offense on the “red” team and the first-string defense on the “black” team. This time, Richt plans to pick offensive and defensive captains for each side and let them “draft” players for their rosters.
“Shoot, I’ve wanted to do this for years, but I always let the assistant coaches talk me out of it,” Richt said. “This year, I’m not going to let them.”
Players won’t know how high, or low, they are drafted. The selections will be made with only the captains, Richt and director of sports medicine Ron Courson in the room, and then the rosters will be posted.

It’s just one spring scrimmage, Dawg fans. One can’t assume anything from one scrimmage: EG the QB’s, the RB’s, nor the D. But, it does appear that CMR is running a more physical spring practice.
I hope we have a big turnout for the G-Day game.

Envy is a terrible thing. For all the negative comments some of you folks spurt, it must be pure envy. You are so afraid that UGA is gonnna hand your team, their lower posterior area come game day, that you think your negative comments really help whatever team you support. If anything, if anybody on the UGA team or the coaches read this, it does one of two thing for them, gives them a good laugh or further motivates them to beat the heck out of your team you support. I suspect most of them think the same as I do and that is, you have too much time on your hands, and not enough purpose in life. You live somehow within your post, being your one great claim as a man. In other words, if all you have to do is insult another team and try to belittle them, you need a life and probably even somebody to love you.

Didnt this rash of injuries happen to us a few years back when we were projected No.#1 team preseason? We still had a decent year i think because some how Mark Richt made incredible adjustments on the team.
Are these injuries because players are being conditioned correctly? How extreme are the practices at UGA? Are these mental injuries moreso than physical ones?
Our practices cant be much different than other college teams practices. Why all the injuries? I think it may have something to do with the way their practices are formatted……… in otherwords wind sprints before practice, 2 on 1 tackling or maybe weight lifting or not enough fluids.
Its kinda like one player catching a cold then another one then another one. Then when a rash of colds break out you start looking as to whats causing that and make adjustments.
Well its the same way with a rash of injuries. Time to find out whats causing this and make adjustments. CMR hopefully is paying more attention to the injuries and the causes without just saying “i dont know whats wrong” and then more injuries occur.

I hope people here are not making fun of any injured player just because theyre not on there favorite team. Some of these injuries can be life threatening or career changing so lets tone down the insults on college kids please. No one can project the results for this upcoming year for Georgia or their team.
I m just hoping for a better year than last but one thing you can predict is that Georgia will rise yet again and win a National Championship or a SEC Title.
So lets all go out and have fun and hope for the best with our teams but in the same be courteous and mature with others here because we’re all people and Americans that love this sport and what it gives us on Saturdays.
I wish no injuries on any college team so that when we do beat your team you cant make the excuse that most of your starters or great players were injured.

rally, I see what your trying to say but our offense right now is statisticaly better than it was during the Greene/Shockley years. I think what your really looking for is that the team was better back then, and a lot of that had to do with our incredible defense. During the Greene/Shockley years our D was feared compared to now.

Let’s hope that your vast FB knowledge works out better than last year. As you may recall, you assured the board that UGA had the personnel to run the 3 – 4, however that wasn’t the case. LB’s were lost, NT was undersized, safeties were lost, or not coached up to know, let alone play the position, or what it required.
Let us not forget the praise that was showered on the OL and how the running game would carry the freshman QB by opening up holes and not allowing the D to stack 8 men in the box.
Perhaps UGA will return punts this year; maybe even get some field position, or a big play or two.
I guess you can blame it on individual position coaches, but remember there is one guy who is responsible for pulling everything together and he is paid the most on the coaching staff.
For the record, I’m not a DAWG hater, but it is amusing to hear all the Richt-ies making excuses for him year after year. Let him beat Florida consistently, finish in the top 5 and play in a BCS bowl, win the SEC EAST, the SEC Champ develop his 4 and 5 star recruits into a team and not just individual position players for the NFL.

Well if we beat Boise and South Carolina back to back, they better pay attention. That’s two top 15 teams that we would have beaten in consecutive weeks. And by looking at our schedule, if we win those two games, we are in for a fantastic season. Start 2-0, finish 12-0 or 11-1.

I doubt UGA bases it’s whole season success on beating Tech. Trust me, with the record as it stands, if anything, UGA almost feels assured of a win against Tech. In state rivaly is a big thing when you have one schools fans almost always saying negative things about another school, when their team has a very poor record of success against them. The facts are in the record books about the two schools records against each other. It is hard to think of it as a big rivalry when the record is so one sided. I think Tech. fans need to worry about their own team and spend a lot less time trying to put down UGA. If they did that, they would find out that a lot less of these UGA fans would try to put down Techs. teams would even bother to comment.

18 players out with injuries. Now Richt has an excuse for this fall. Players didn’t get enough reps in spring and it showed in the first 2 games. LMAO!! He used the same pathetic excuse in 2008 when he and his coaches got their asses handed to them by Bama&Fl. Will be the same lame ass excuse or something else when Boise &Carolina beat his terribly prepared team this fall. Nothing has changed with Richt&BOOBOO as it relates to offense the past 4 or 5 years. Soft O.L., that isn’t physical, terrible o.l.coach, and terrible play calling that loves to pass first and run second. Richt has put together the worst coaching staff in the SEC east, and it all stems from his Fl.State days of the good ole buddy stystem. It destroyed Bowden because he was too stubborn and too arrogant to change, and it has destroyed Richt. He will never get the program back to top 10 status, just like Bowden couln’t get Fl.State back. Richt promotes his buddy BOOBOO who had no O.C. experience, he promoted his best man Willie who had no D.C. experience, he let BOOBOO pick one of his freinds for the O.L. coach, and he let Grantham pick one of his friends for the Linebacker coach. Florida&Bama hire the best coaches available to make up their staffs, and that is why they develop their 4&5 star talent. UGA will never beat Bama or Fl. as long as Richt and his pathetic staff are in Athens. Hopefully all UGA fans will have to watch this mediocre team on the field for one more fall, because UGA fans deserve much better. But i have a feeling this A.D. is buying into Richt’s pathetic excuses. His quotes from last year” we were close in every game, and we didn’t get blown out of any of the games”. sounds like UGA is allowing Grantham and the new LB coach to bring the pain! UGA needs to get a mad if they’re to get out of the funk they find themselves.
Alabama will have the best defense in the country in 2011 and will be in Atlanta as the West Champ. When the freshmen class reports in June Bama will have 3 #1 classes and 1 #4 class on campus to go with Nick Saban and staff. That is strong.

Dawgs4ever, have to agree on your opinion on UGA’s coaching staff. I watched some of the Fl. spring game and the 3 or 4 five star d.l. they signed last year are all dominant players, that played as true freshman,and will be starters this year. Also, Auburn signed 3 4 star d.l. last year, and they all played alot of minutes as true freshman, and Whitaker and the other defensive tackles will start this year. UGA on the other hand signed 2 four star defensive tackles in Garrison Smith, and Mike Thornton, and neither of them played any significant minutes, nor will either one of them start this year. And that to Stripling&the other 4 star defensive end out of S.Carolina, and you have 4 big time linemen that contributed nothing. I can’t believe all of the players UGA signed were over hyped, or weren’t ready to play physically. It’s been the same old song and dance at UGA since RIcht has been there. It has to be the coaches and their ablility to develop players, as well as their mindset not to play freshman. Whatever the reason, the bottomline is Fl.Auburn, and Bama recruit 4 &5 star studs and play as freshman and contribute, UGA’s players don’t contribute and they don’t develop. I think it is fair to say Garner should have left 4 or 5 years ago. He was getting out recruited by Tracy Rocker at Auburn before he left, and he doesn’t get the most out of the talent he has. Fl&Bama will have dominant defenses this year and the years to come, UGA can only hope with this staff.

Excuses are for losers, and Richt has turned UGA into a loser. The sad thing is UGA fans except this mediocre coach and this mediocre product he puts on the field. The record the past 3 years doesn’t lie. Not an assumption of his and his staff’s coaching ability. Coaches of rival teams in the Eastern division and the SEC as a whole have been saying how inept this staff is for years now. O.K. dawg4ever and Who Cares, This is the real skinny weather you like it or not. CMR is trying to make these kids better men. I know this is frustrating to you, it is at times for me too. Do you remember your first year of college? It’s almost overwhelming even for the non-athlete, and I’ll just let you in on a little secret, ” these guys ain’t brain scientists”. But CMR is trying to give them a little edge toward getting their degree by not playing them as freshmen. And I also can tell you without a doubt that at least one of those other coaches you mentioned could care less. Does “over sighning” ring a bell? What happens to the student athelete that gets his scholarship taken away? If you want to be that ruthless then my friends you need to become Auburn and Alabama fans, because you are not DAWG fans! Last year was a fluke. It will not happen again (This year). Take a hard look back on it. All the way back before last spring. Just all the stupid stuff that went on. This stuff happens to major football programs all over the U.S. I personally think we weathered it pretty well. Other programs would have fallen and been down for a long time. CMR did handle it correctly. I’m not going to say it will never happen again (because it will) but it will be a long time from now. I am not a total CMR guy. I do criticize him too, (usually in a knee jerk reactive kind of way) but once I step back and look at the big picture I think we are looking at one of the greatest coaches of all time, He’s only going into his eleventh season at UGA and has done very well. Florida has had a tremendous amount of momentum on ther side going back to the Spurrier days. We on the other hand had been losing momentum ever since the Dooley days as far as Florida goes. It takes a long time to correct a listing ship (which I believe was close to being a 45 degree list my friends) It will be corrected!!

Who Cares, I did hear through the grapevine that Garner has been given an ultimatum. Either he steps up his “coaching” or he will be permanent recruiting coordinator without any coaching responsibilities. I think this is good. His feet are being held to the fire, and what I’ve been hearing out of Athens is that it is showing up on the practice field.

Oh, and as far as the injuries are concerned. Mark Richt has “never” used injuries as an excuse. Others have though. Injuries just gives other guys opportunities. Did you see yesterday were Vavlas had quite a few tackles in the scrimmage. That is just one “walk on” that has bennefited from others injuries. And from what I gather this kid can play. I believe he will see action this year. A great student too. Really good grades.

A few years ago when UGA was pre season #1 they would have won the championship if they had not had very many injuries but when you have as many injuries that we had you have to have the depth to compensate for it , which we did not have. So what was CMR’s answer , not to get so many players hurt in practice by not having physical practices and we stopped losing so many to injury but we got real soft. Because of our past success we started to get the recruits that would take care of the lack of depth but now we aren’t tough enough.
If CMR didn’t learn anything I think he now realizes that you have to stay tough even though you might not have the depth. That’s why teams like South Carolina, Boise State and TCU have been able to finish in the top 20 so often or be able to give the best teams all they can handle even though they may lose.
The bottom line is I think it will take until 2012 to get us tough enough again. It took 3 or 4 years to get the way we were last year. Our offensive line was the worst and weakest I have ever seen at Georgia. It will be a miracle if the S&C and coaches make enough progress to make a difference in 2011. We will know just how far after the first two games.

You are a typical TECH fan. I can’t say you went to UGA let alone graduated from there. Look at Texas last year, Oklahoma a few years back, Alabama before Saban, Auburn before Scam, and Florida with Zook. All had bad seasons. You can’t expect to be a top tiered team year an year out. It is not possible. When you have high talent levels, you lose them to the draft, Before you lose them to the draft, you can’t get top shelf talent because they know they won’t play. Hence the problems we have had at QB after Stafford and Knowshon left. You are talking out of you backside. PLEASE tell me who you want as coach, and who you make you happy. You need to go back to your dorm and microwave your hot pocket…

better spring game and BTW who gives an F about seeing first team and second team. I’d much rather see a spritied competitive event with talent on both sides battling, snarling, punching in the pile, competitive with winning the whole friggin point. Glad to hear some folks are being banged up with aggressive practices. It’s been obvious that the old Irk formatt has been missing for several years so damned the torpedos and knock the shart out of somebody and come what may because, seriously, folks, the thought of getting hammered by Boise because we were afraid of injuring players in spring and summer practice and having those same players that were “saved” by “cautious” practices showing up and playing like a bunch of goddamn pussies like I witnessed last year is unfathomable. Well, overall we have a lot of our talent back and they are a year older, with some significant new talent in the mix. Our D was brand new last year and many of the players were less than comfortable at times; CTG was brand new and now knows the SEC much better, and we have a better fit in many spots. One of the critical spots on a 3-4 is the NG, and that looks much better to me. Our LB corps is very fast; I think they could become the talk next year. With a stronger line, they will be aided, too. Having the tremendous speed gives CTG’s scheme more flexibility. You never know where the extra man is going to rush. Having a Richard Samuel (sub 4.5 out of HS), or a Jarvis Jones is going to make for some interesting pressure schemes we simply didn’t have last year. All of them are fast for LBs, and Ogeltree is very fast for a LB, too. I am very hopeful our D can show dramatic improvement. We also lost a number of easy turnovers on D last year, so I think the new pressure CTG’s tactics brought made significant improvements even as it was. My biggest disappointment last year was our O line. Just about everybody (including me) thought they would be pretty dominant, and they didn’t quite hit that level, to say the least. I think they are the key again this year. If they can protect Murray and open up some big holes for our RBs, I think our O will be very strong. The backs did pretty well last year. Every time one of them got going good, he would get injured, start fumbling, or get in trouble off of the field. With another year of lifting and maturing, King, Ealey and Thomas should be good backs. They absolutely have to stop fumbling. The guy that I’m watching is Malcome. If he can get healthy, he is going to be very tough to tackle, and will make us very deep, something we haven’t had at TB in a while. Crowell is icing on the cake. If the line blocks, we are going to pick up some yardage. Receiver is the second big unknown to me. We could be great, and we could be looking for someone to step up for a while. I believe we will be fine there. All in all, this year actually looks much better than I thought it would because I thought last year’s O line would be irreplaceable. Remembering last year, King was hurt at the start, Murray was an unknown and CMB appeared scared to put him in situations that might be over his head (the predictability really hurt us with SC), and CMB seemed to be reluctant to give up on the idea that we would have a dominant rushing game. AJ was suspended, and all of the off field problems hurt the team’s focus. I think they will be very fired up to start on the national stage against and exciting and outstanding team in Boise State and I expect them to start very, very strong. We’ll have to see how they do in the first two games, but we could be in for a great year in ‘11. Our schedule looks a little better to me, especially if we can get started with a small string of wins.

Even dawg fans are beginning to understand that. All Richt has done the last few years is to assemble a motley collection of thugs and morons who are not competitive even in a weakened division. Yes, they’ve become a disgrace and a perennial joke, not to mention totally irrelevant.

UGA man here. Before we begin the rants and tirades about UGA guys being out of C …… how many of y’all played HS ball? Do you remember getting your cleats and gear on and hungry around 320? Hot early on in AUgust and September, or rainy and we still have to practice??? Was practice fun? Usually the guys 9th graders hand selected and a few 10th graders humped it before being demoted.
Folks ……………….it counts in The Dome and when SC comes calling. Then and only then.
