Spring-practice updates on five UGA players

Eight practices down, seven to go (including the G-Day game). At just beyond the mid-point of  UGA spring football, here are updates on five players you might be wondering about:

  • DeAngelo Tyson, DE: After playing the nose position out of necessity last year, he is working exclusively at defensive end this spring – a change much to his liking. “Playing nose was a hard task, but I did it to help the team out,” said Tyson, a rising senior. “Playing defensive end is much better. You don’t have all that double-teaming and triple-teaming and stuff like that. I’m having fun out there this spring.” Linebacker Christian Robinson said Tyson and the rest of the defensive line “have really stepped up. . . . Definitely, the defensive line as a whole is so much farther ahead than I could have imagined.”
  • Ken Malcome, RB: Redshirted as a freshman last season, the tailback from Southwest DeKalb has been bothered all spring by a nagging groin injury. He believes the injury has diminished his effectiveness, but he has persevered and stayed on the field. “He hasn’t really been full speed” but had a couple of nice runs on Saturday, coach Mark Richt said. Said running backs coach Bryan McClendon: “You just want him to be able to be comfortable out there and know what to do. That’s what he needs to focus on, making sure he is learning the ins and outs of what we’re doing.”
  • Justin Anderson, OG: He is making the adjustment back to the offensive line after last year’s short-lived shift to the defensive line, and he is working himself back into condition after toe surgery sidelined him for all but the opening game last year. “Repetition is so important on the offensive line, and I think he’s behind in that,” new O-line coach Will Friend said. “If he can get all that together, though, he’s got all kinds of tools.” Friend noted that Anderson wasn’t cleared to run until shortly before spring practice and is “not all the way in the great shape that he needs to be in. But he’s powerful, he’s big, and I think he wants to do good.”
  • Christian LeMay, QB: The freshman quarterback from North Carolina, who enrolled in January, is mostly learning what to do because, as Richt said at one point, “it’s all brand new to him right now.”  While experiencing the learning curve on footwork, fundamentals, etc., he has made a positive impression with his work habits and his demeanor in the huddle and the meeting room.  In Saturday’s scrimmage, “he threw one of the better fade routes,” Richt said. “He put it in play, and Michael Bennett made a very fine catch. He also stood in there and threw a short curl, about a 10-yard curl route, to Bennett. He had to hang in that pocket.”
  • Branden Smith, CB: An oft-asked question is whether he will be used more extensively on offense, where he has been deployed occasionally the past two seasons. According to Smith, he has worked only at cornerback and on special teams this spring. “They haven’t told me anything about offense,” he said, referring to the coaches. “Right now, I’m just focused on defense.” He also remains in the mix to return punts, although kickoff-return record-holder Brandon Boykin has joined the competition there.

Joey,

Unfortunatley, I agree with you. Murray’s prone to panic. Collapse against Florida was one of the biggest meltdowns in Georgia history.

Lemay is cool under pressure, some great videos on youtube, you’re right.

Murray is 0-6 against ranked teams, and tends to crack under pressure (G-Day, Gators, Bowl games, etc.)

Need a QB with poise.

I too can’t wait for the new changing of the gaurd at QB. Lemay is impressive, stepped right up and threw a bomb in practice, I’ll watch him on G-Day very carefully.

I saw Mettenberger destroy Murray lasy G-Day, and I saw what Mettenberger did at Butler. Believe me, he’ll win the job at LSU, he’s a gamer.

Murray, not so much.

Altamaha, the best thing you and I can do is leave the blog to Joey and his friends who are all one in the same.

He will never respond directly to you, just a venom spewing TROLL

I have abused him repeatedly. He will never admit it.

Gray and Mett were guaranteed to start at CU and LSU according to him.

Gray is nowhere to be found on CU depth chart and Mett is 3rd string.

Game over.

Talk to you tomorrow

Well, lex, I have bored everyone enough today anyway. And we are approaching page 4 and we all know nothing worth a toot comes past page 2.

I’ll just leave the Joey character with this:

Lemay IS our boy. Murray is our boy too. We will be a far bigger fans and supporters of both of these young man than you will EVER be. Lemay is nothing more to you than your next excuse to be an irritant.

I guess I too am guilty of knocking CMR relentlessly. It just seems like it’s been so long since UGA has been taken seriously in the SEC. And it’s been even longer since UGA has been feared, as in the days of Erk Russell’s, God Rest his Soul, defenses. In my day, UGA had respect in all corners of the SEC. UGA earned that respect the old way by hard work. We might not have won each game, But every team we played knew they had been in a fight. I wil give CMR the benefit of the doubt until CMR proves me wrong this season.
DAWGMAN OUT.

I agree with those who would rather our DBs not play on offense. Saban flat tells recruits, either defense or offense, but not both. If a kid comes in and plays only defense for a couple of years THEN gets some work on offense, that might be ok.

I saw HIM speak

April 5th, 2011
9:49 pm

I saw Scam Newton on TV the other evening giving a speech. He and I have something in common, neither is a QB and only 1 of us could play SEC QB. Now, Scam in the NFL, will be a project. He was slow in his articulation and he had issues thinking on his feet, while delivering that speech.

These are the intangibles that owners and quality coaches look for. Can the guy lead …………….MEN, not punks or thug kids. Men he will be in charge of. He has a way to go. Pro O linemen are intelligent and they expect their QB to be also. He ain’t. Florida also saw that deficiency in him and they kicked him out but poor old AU was there ( after JUCO ) to take that guy in. Anything to win.

Scam will be like that Texas QB of their NC team about 4 years ago. He failed in the NFL or is failing. Scam might not make it and when his $$ starts flowing in ……………. he might spend too much time partying too. He did not impress me as a take charge guy and seemed slow and well, slow.

Time will tell.

I can’t believe there are people stupid enough to be calling for a change in starting QBs. Murray had 2 bad games, both in Florida. I was screaming at the tv during the Liberty Bowl. If Bobo or Richt had told Aaron to take those gloves off we would have won that game by 2 tds.

To those that say Murray cracked under pressure one he was a freshman an d I hope leymay is good but their is a difference between sec football and high school football just saying. I wish them both best of luck and if we get a true freshman in that is as good or better than Murray then better for the dawgs! Makes our team better with good compotition

I pitty you unintelligent reprobates aka uga fans because of your lack of interest and understanding of good football. To clarify I am a graduate of Auburn University and stick to my true beliefs and after this past season it is pretty prevalent that once again Auburn will prevail. I ponder the reasoning that year after year people with ZERO allegiance toward UGA continue to speak with so much conviction that UGA should be amazing each year. Not sure what gives you “dawg fans” the reasoning to think that since you havent won $..t since 1980.. 31 years of unexistence and mediocre performances is what you have accounted for. UGA should have a nice number 15 next to them each year because it is statistically proven that you will once again under achieve year after year after year..

All In,

Guess we just haven’t offered enough money to compete with Auburn. I wonder why you feel the need to come onto a UGA blog and spout your negative comments. Do you do the same for all of the other SEC sachools? I think you had better be concerned about the problems Auburn will face in the future due to NCAA investigations and leave UGA football teams alone. It appears the only thing Auburn may prevail in for the future is NCAA sanctions.

“pretty prevalent that once again Auburn will prevail” (nice wording there professor)

It is? prevalent in what circles?

So nobody is writing anything about the 15 starters, including the entire line, QB, and NG having to be replaced over there. It’s just the prevailing thought that it’s all taken care of going forward now?

Call it lack of understanding, but IF I had to make a prediction, I would guess that AU will not prevail in a number of games this coming season including (which will be 5 L’s of the last 6 years) at UGA this year. And I’m not even saying we are going to have an “amazing” year, just decent. Not real sure what forums you are reading with all the UGA fans saying anything about being amazing each each anyway. Kinda sounds like you just made that up.

It takes a real UGA graduate to point out simple gramatical mistakes and I sure do appreciate that. I love the whole Scam newton thing.. I think its so cute that people say that it just tickles me. Its funny how you people are blinded by the reality because guess what.. Paying players has been going on for years and its happening at your school right now. If you dont believe me then you are nieve because I know from first hand experience that its happening. The whole CMR thing thats catchy how about you actually compete for something and try to win something instead of going 5-6. Isnt the goal to win championships oh ya thats right .. 14-0 SEC Champions and National Champions. Guess what 1 player didn.t win a championship get your facts straight.

All In,

Please enlighten all of us Nieve (naive) UGA fans with your insider knowledge concerning a UGA player getting paid. As you say, all of college football does it, so are you now saying that Newton was paid by Auburn and Cam knew it all the time? This insider information you have must be pretty reliable I guess. I assume you were offered and money was promised to you? Funny how you are the first Auburn fan to have this insider information. You are also the first Auburn fan to admit that Cam got paid.

See, Joey’s problem is like so many people these days. He understands nothing about leadership. It is very obvious, and I have stated in prior posts, that Mettenberger had no leadership qualities. If so, he would not have gotten all the bad publicity he earned. Joey is one of these guys who just thinks because a guy was a hot shot in high school that they will automatically make a yop notch QB in the SEC. And, maybe he will be. Murray has earned a whole lot more respect from his peers and people whose opinion I value a whole lot more than yours. So just keep on with your chidlish posts as I’m pretty sure that’s all you are capable of.

I agree with dawgfan, except for the fact that this team hasn’t been nationally relevant since the early 80’s. Who cares how many times we’ve beat Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee or South Carolina? How many times have we beat Florida? Not enough. Sure, you people will argue that Richt has a great record and got us 2 SEC championships and has only had one losing season, but that’s shouldn’t be good enough. Look at how many National Championships the SEC has won since the 80’s. Of those, Georgia has none. Richt has never had a season with less than 2 losses. That’s pathetic to me. Georgia is not, and has not been for a while, an elite SEC team. I’m a Georgia fan, but I’m also a realist.

AltamahaDawg,

Exactly my point. His comments are so negative, I would have trouble believing he is an alumni of Auburn, or even if he is over the legal drinking age. Statements concerning every college paying it’s players without any substantial proof to back up the statement leads me to beleive what I have said is true. And by his own admission then, he is saying that Auburn paid for Cam’s services.

The U,

Not so sure he got his walking papers or not. Spurrier seems to be saying, he can work his way back on to the team if certain conditions are met. If not, Spurrier appears to be willing to let him go, and go with his sophmore, who must be more coachable and because he is a sophmore, has a future beyond this year. If Garcia were a top ten QB, ole Steve would find a way to justify keeping him. He has been in the game too long, to mess up a good meal ticket. LOL.
