ATHENS — Although the rumor mill has linked his name to various coaching openings in the past month, most recently UNLV’s, Georgia men’s basketball coach Mark Fox insisted again Tuesday that he has no interest in any other job.
“I don’t want anyone thinking I’m leaving, because this is where I’m going to coach,” he said.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported last week that Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity had opened discussions with Fox about a new or amended contract.
“Greg and I had an initial conversation, and I trust him,” Fox said Tuesday. “He knows this is where I want to coach. . . . Right now we’re spending our energy on getting information for Travis [Leslie regarding the NBA draft], coaching our team, recruiting. And when we have time, I guess we’ll finish that [contract] discussion.”
McGarity, seated nearby, nodded his head in agreement.
“I really feel like this is a place where we can win at a very high level,” Fox said. “But to do that, we have to take our time and do it the right way.”

Coach, take if from a Dawg alum. You might as well go as soon as someone gives you an offer. You just saw what happened with a kid from Georgia, who has a BROTHER on the team. He picked the bottom of the ACC’s shoe over the Dawgs. You will simply never have a chance at sustained success in Athens. The kids just don’t have loyalty to their state school.

Ante up, Greg… this guy’s a keeper! Can’t wait to see Leslie and the new recruits on a running team next season.
And, good luck, Trey… wherever you land in the NBA. By staying and playing, you made this season exciting and memorable. The HoopDawgs are building their program the right way… and Trey had a great hand in turning it around…woof-woof!

What absolute crap. A flagship school with a bottomless athletic budget and a fertile recruiting base will never support sustained success? Garbage.

The reason the Nolte kid picked Virginia was because he along with everyother top recruit in state aren’t sold on Fox or his program. Kids want to play for a team that has the potential to win consistently, and UGA and Fox don’t impress these kids. When you only sign one of the top ten players in state, and eight of those are in top 150, you are not a good recruiter. For fans to say this guy is building the program the right way, what way is that. To sit there and watch the top talent leave the state every year, and to sign one every couple of years. There is no way this coach will build a consistent program like that, and people forget, his top 3 players were all signed by Felton. Fox has signed one player that will hopefully be an SEC player, and that is Pope. Other than Pope, there is no one from last year’s class that has contributed, and there is probably no one other than Pope that will contribute next year. Basketball is alot easier to build a program in a short period of time, but to only recruit one good player in two years will not get the job done. We will see what this coach is all about next year. If he gets UGA back in the big dance next year, then we have a coach, if he has another losing season, UGA is once again the 5th best team in the SEC east.

Dawg4ever, you are wrong sir. I’ve seen a vast improvement since Fox took over that program. Winning consistently? When did this team ever win consistently before Fox became the hc? You talk about Fox being a bad recruiter……heck, give the man time to establish himself in the SE. He took Dennis Felton’s(84-91) recuits and made them winners(35-28) in just 2 seasons. There is one area where he needs to improve at and that’s closing out games after building big leads. I think he will do that next season because Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a scoring machine and he doesn’t shy away when the game is on the line. Just give the man time.

Have you seen the 2012 kids UGA is in on? Its a bumper crop in-state and Fox is posiitioned to load up.
About Nolte- he is signing with a school whose program is not at UGA’s level as we speak. They do seem to have a good coach and may be successful, but right now most neutral observers have your and my favorite school rated above them. Can’t buy your reasons for him rejecting us.
As you know, UGA is highly rated as a public university, but Virginia is very good academically, and Nolte is someone who values an education, as he alluded to in his committment announcement.
While waiting on football season, as a Dog fan, enjoy the usual spring sports success UGA is experiencing. The baseball team just swept a ranked team, the Lady Dogs softball team has a nation leading 37 game home winning streak, the nation’s top college tennis program over the last 25 years is leading the SEC, and the Lady Dogs tennis team is likewise unbeaten.
So, Dawg4ever, revel in your beloved school’s athletic excellence, and don’t fret over the one that got away.

Here’s my take on why Nolte is bolting to Virginia. By the time that he would hit the floor at Georgia as a freshman, Nemanja Djurisic who is a verbal commit to UGA and will sign in the late period will be starting as a sophomore and pulling in most of the minutes with Nolte mostly subbing behind him. Nolte probably wouldn’t start at Georgia until his senior year. He probably sees greener pastures in Virginia. Good luck to both. Go Dawgs and go Fox get K. Ware.

Using Felton’s recruits to make it to the Big Dance,is something Felton wouldn’t and couldn’t do in two years,or nine! Give coach Fox credit. He just made UGA basketball relevent again. I don’t feel (like Dawg4ever},that we have to wait until next year making it to the Big Dance again,to say we have a coach . Lets hear it from others,I think we now have a coach! Anybody speaking negatively of Mark Fox and his job thus far hasn’t been a fan of Georgia basketball for very long, that much I am CERTAIN of. If they’re fans at all, and not trolls…
…Tubby Smith wasn’t around long enough to recruit enough players of his own (I suppose his success was all off Hugh Durham’s work….) yet we knew his leaving was going be painful, and that guy managed to win a national championship, as memory serves.
I don’t care who was recruited by whom; the man can draw up a game plan and work with what he’s given; that’s a good COACH. His sticking around and PROVING to in-state recruits that he’s going nowhere will bring those blue-chippers in, soon enough.
And for those whining about late-game losses…. folks, it’s about depth. Our starting five was as good as anybody we faced. Our bench was our weakness. You DO know that, right?

You people are all just suckers. Come back here in 3 years after the Dawgs have floundered around about 16-15 for 3 straight years.
Fox just had the most talented team he is likely to ever have at UGA. How many times in history has UGA had 2 NBA players on the team simultaneously? The team was simply too weak mentally to play up to its talent. That’s coaching.
Connor Nolte was as close to a lead-pipe lock of a kid that UGA could ever hope for in hoops, and Fox still blew it, and it’s not like the kid went to UNC or Duke, he went to a pathetic, scrub program that is at or below UGA’s level.
Maybe Fox will salvage the class and pick up Parker, Reid and a dynamic point guard, but if he does not get at least Parker, the 2012 class will be like Mark Richt’s 2007 class, a total whiff on in-state kids that will lead the program to mediocrity.

Some of you guys are idiots or obviously were not here when Hugh Durham coached. I was a UGA student when he came when hardly anyone went to the games — I know — I was at the games — they had bleachers on the floors where you could sit closer to the game. Once he recruited several good players including Dominique Wilkins, Vern Fleming, etc., and started winning games, the place started to sell out. Fans will come see the men’s bball team if he wins. I do agree I believe he needs a better recruiter who has connections particularly with some of these AAU coaches.

Fox knows he doesn’t have to go any place. He can be middle of the pack in the SEC and still be loved like Richt. UGA fans only care about football and they still keep Richt around. Fox has it made while still loosing to the Gators, Kentucky, Vandy, and Bama. It is not like Fox is a football coach losing to those teams. I the football coach lost to those teams he would be fired. Wait RICHT and BOBO lost to the GATORS, KENTUCKY, BAMA, USC, and U Central Florida. AHHAHAH He still has a JOB at UGA? FOX is golden for sure then.

“… and still be loved like Richt.”
What a joke that is! Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.
Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

Coming off the first 20+ win season this decade and people are hating on a second year coach who WANTS to coach at UGA and believes he can win here. What’s wrong with you people?

LOL @ Bag of Rocks…
BYRD – Yes, we’re better than we were under Felton…that’s obvious. We still aren’t winning anything that matters though…beating Mercer and losing in the first round of the ncaas does not, however, equal success….a step in the right direction? yes, I’ll give you that. And I’m willing to wait and see what happens the next 2 years….Do I expect a lot? No. Talk is cheap, just like all this talk about the football players changing their diet, working harder, caring more….means nothing until they go on the field and actually beat florida and a majority of the others we lost to last year….
I want to win as much as the rest of you, but I’ll be convinced that Fox is the guy to get it done when we actually get something done….aka, win an ncaa tourney game or 2 or win the sec east even….something, anything other than just 20 wins (which isn’t a big deal anymore), many of which are against the mercers and LSUs of the world….
I’m trying to be more open to success here….

It was bad enough that Delta hasn’t had a flight on time since 1997. But now they are banning Bulldogs??!! I hope that doesn’t apply to charters for UGA
Just another reason to count down the days til Southwest gets here.

$ was not a factor when Tubby left. Tubby was going to KY no matter what..it was a far better job ..and when he came here, he was recommended by the Ky AD, Newton, who told UGA then that he would come after Tubby if a KY opening came up. So no one was surprised.
Not denying that Ky could and would have spent more than GA, but Tubby left not for that reason, but to coach at one of the 4 or 5 blue blood programs.

My football blue blood programs based on recent success and also history back as far as it goes..Im sure there will be some disagreement but here is my opinion
A+ Deep Blue:
Alabama/ Ohio St/ Michigan/ No Dame/ Nebraska/ Oklahoma/ Texas/ USC
A..Light Blue a tick below the ones above..these teams will be in the top 25 8 yrs out of 10 and have a good history of conf and natl championships. Some have been off lately but history is good ..some have no history but have been great lately.
Fla/Tenn/ Ga/Auburn/ LSU/ Florida State/ Penn State/ Wisconsin/ Texas AM/ Va Tech/ Miami/
not quite there call it B+ .UCLA..Boise State, Oregon, Arkansas, Okla. State, West VA, Mich St, SC

Hey Dawg4ever… the Dawgnation just took a vote and the results are in: You are free to leave the dawgnation and NOT be a Dawg4ever. You are not a true Dawg fan and are one of the most negative people on the blogs concerning the Dawgs. Maybe you need to spend more time with your wife and see if she can make you smile. Apparently UGA can’t! Hope I never have to sit by you at a game.

Fox is stuck here. He has a $2 million buyout. Who the heck signs such a stupid contract? A desperate man indeed.

Reddawg, you are dead wrong about Tubby leaving. Slobberknocker, you are closer to correct. After we fired Felton I was conducting some business with Tubby and was picking at him telling that we were looking for a Coach and some people in Athens would roll the red carpet back out for him. He spent 20 minutes telling exactly how his going to Lexington took place and how much he and Donna loved Athens. He loves Coach Dooley and CVD nor money had anything to do with Tubby leaving.

Money could not keep Tubby in Athens.
Does anyone remember he was on Pitino’s staff?
Does anyone remember that he was hand picked by CM Newton the day after Pitino resigned?
Fox is going to stay in Athens. I hope he becomes a fixture like Donovan in Gainesville.

Fox is wise in collecting his money now before ThUGA has to pony up a ton of cash for a new football coach next season.
