What you might have missed over the weekend…

A quick recap of a busy (and good) weekend in Bulldog Nation:

Craig Gullickson

Craig Gullickson

  • Baseball: Georgia swept a three-game series from No. 24 Mississippi State at Foley Field, winning 4-1 on Friday, 4-3 on Saturday and 4-1 on Sunday. The Dogs (14-14, 6-3 SEC) are on a five-game SEC winning streak. They got strong starting pitching all weekend. Friday: Alex Wood allowed one run on three hits and struck out eight in seven innings. Saturday: Michael Palazzone went 8 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Sunday: Craig Gullickson permitted one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. (Gullickson is the son of former major-league pitcher Bill Gullickson and the brother of UGA tennis player Chelsey Gullickson, the defending NCAA women’s singles champion.)
  • Gymnastics: The Gym Dogs are headed back to the NCAA Championships after a one-year absence. They finished second (behind UCLA) in the NCAA Southeast Regional in Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday to earn a spot in the 12-team field for the NCAA Championships April 15-17 in Cleveland. The Gym Dogs posted their second highest score of the season Saturday, 196.750. Kat Ding won the uneven bars with a 9.95.
  • Softball: Georgia, ranked No. 2 nationally, swept a two-game series from Tennessee-Martin, winning 6-1 on Saturday and 6-0 on Sunday, to extend its home winning streak to 37 games, the longest in NCAA Division I. The Bulldogs are 32-4 this season.
  • Tennis: Both the men’s and women’s teams extended their winning streaks to 12 matches and stayed unbeaten in the SEC by picking up victories over Ole Miss on Friday and Mississippi State on Sunday. The men’s team (17-3, 8-0 SEC) won by 4-3 scores in Oxford and Starkville, while the women’s team (14-1, 8-0 SEC) posted a pair of 6-1 victories in Athens.
  • Women’s golf: Georgia’s Marta Silva Zamora shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to win individual medalist honors at UGA’s 39th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Alabama won the team title. Georgia tied for sixth.
  • Football: The Bulldogs held their first scrimmage of the spring in Sanford Stadium on Saturday morning. Click here for a recap.

This recap is great. As an alum, I am always interested to see how our “minor” sports teams do. As usual, the Dawgs do well in the non-revenue producing sports. It seems as though our baseball team is headed for a much better year this year than last.
Thank you for the article. It would be nice to always get this info through the AJC.

Haven’t heard one word about Lemay. Just Murray and Mason. I was hoping he could get some reps and learn enough to play this fall so we have another option at QB in case of injury. Mason doesn’t excite me as a 2nd option.

Maybe we have 3 who can play???

DawginLex: LeMay did get some snaps in Saturday’s scrimmage. Here’s what Mark Richt said about him afterward: “He threw one of the better fade routes today. He put it in play, and Michael Bennett made a very fine catch. He also stood in there and threw a short curl, about a 10-yard curl route, to Bennett. He had to hang in that pocket.”

Am I wrong in not giving Mason a chance in my mind to ever be able to help?

Why the disdain for Hutson Mason? He didn’t get a lot of snaps last year but lest we forget, he did throw a TD on his first ever play. Bodes well for the future if for no other reason, to give LeMay some quality competition.

I thought Lemay could add another dimension to the offense like Shockley. I may be wrong about Mason and I hope I am. There are worse problems than having 3 QB’s who can play.

I don’t know if Jay Clark is doing a good job or a bad job, but he is stepping into an almost impossible situation behind the 4 peat NC.

I keep reading where his team put up best, or second best numbers, and still didn’t win. Seems like the rest of the country has caught up, and he needed to get his squad to step it UP yet another notch, not just maintain status quo. Does that even exist? Not sure if even S.Y. had many more notches.

Anybody else notice the depth chart at QB for LSU?

1.)Jefferson
2.)Lee
3.)Mettenberger

So much for the predictions that Mett was going to lead LSU to the national title after he “transferred” according to the idiot that posts on here every day under a different blog handle.

Uga should be concerned about their lack of depth on the offensive line. Last year they lost Boling, Chris Davis and Josh Davis. Also, three players listed on last years post spring depth chartas 2nd unit offensive lineman, Kevin Perez, Jonathan Owens, and Tanner Strickland, have left the program. In addition, Rivals has rated your incoming offensive line class as 9th in the conference. Reason for concern?

saban should be concerned that he lost 3 games last year
saban should be concerned that his QB’s have zero experience
saban should be concerned that he blew a 24 point lead to his archrival at home
saban should be looking for his next place to coach if he underachieves again

Isn’t he supposed to be the world’s greatest coach?
How does he lose 3 games and blow a 24 point lead at home to “little brother”?
Mettenberger could start at Bama right now but is 3rd string at LSU.

680 The Fan & Georgia Bulldogs to “Hunker Down”
Apr 01, 2011 — 8:59pm
This is good. I’ve been waiting for this, during my 11-year career at 680 The Fan. Oh, yeah. Sounds good to me. And what took so long?

680 The Fan is now the “Official Sports Talk Station of the Georgia Bulldogs.” Hear it’s a 5-year partnership. And this is a good deal for both sides. The ‘Dogs get the word out in Atlanta, on a daily basis. 680 The Fan gets access. Live coverage of Richt press conferences, during the season. Weekly programming on Bulldog football. In-depth, expanded coverage. Sure hope they saved me a spot! Coach Perno’s loving this…Georgia baseball live on 680 The Fan 2, AM 1230. Won’t many of those excellent high school players here in metro Atlanta be listening? Other sports will feel the spotlight of “Atlanta’s Sports Station” too.

It’s a win-win. David Dickey and Alan Thomas have worked on this deal for years. And it’s a done deal. I love it. Georgia fans should love it too.

JB true. It is a rolling 85 number over a twelve month calender. Its just fuzzy math. Academics, gray shirts, medical hardships and reinsurance coverage impacts the numbers in what actually qualifies. But we dont call it math it is refered to a ciphering so you have to quantify the numbers LOL.

From our Saturday scrimmage we may need 105 more. Tackling in our secondary according to Saban lacking and anytime you have your two inexperienced qbs throwing for 400 yards you have some defensive concerns.

“Dawgs will have a top O-line this season. No worries!”

That’s exactly the same kind of crap that dawgtards were saying this time last year.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 50, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

If any UGA fan wants to see how you stack up in recruiting nation wide, please click on the link and just look at some of your SEC brothers and the number of times other schools show up in the lates Scout rankings as ” interested” and compare it to UGA and how local the recruits are. The state of Georgia is stacked in talent but in order to compete at the highest level in the country this staff is going to need to expand its travel budget and buy some of those cheap tickets on AirTran and Southwest and go elsewhere to add some recruits.

Many Bama fans like this site because it’s talking football – and a great forum.

Also – because the focus is a tradional SEC powerhouse program – UGA – we feel compelled to talk UGA football as well.

This site is not only for UGA fans – but all fans.

From my perspective – I hope Richt will have a good enough season to stay at UGA – he is a class act and I hope he has learned some lessons in being a HC.

As for the football team – there are so many open questions about the DAWGS that we could debate from now until season kickoff. If you have that many questions – then what does that say about the state of your program???? College football is great as there is nothing static – classes graduate – players come and go – and every year is a new year.

UGA football 2011:
The good!
– your QB
– your T/E’s
– Your LB’s seem very athletic

The questions for 2011:
– your O-Line (face it – a liability the last 2 years)
– your RBs (bad O-Line makes decent backs look bad – but King and Ealey created a lot of problems with their personal issues)
– your WR’s – I think UGA will be good at WR – even with Green gone.
– your D-Line – should improve this year – the NG you picked up will help – and it all starts there.
– your coaching / player development – has this been missing or what???? We will find out

What to think?
– I do not know – UGA could go 6-7 again or could go 10-3!!!!

Schedule:
Wins – Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy, Kentucky, NM STATE
Probable Wins – GT, Tennessee
Probable Losses: Boise State, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Florida and Auburn

This puts UGA at 7-5 – but games are unpredictable.

If UGA beats Boise State – then S. Carolina – this team could make thinks really exciting in Athens.

I do hope UGA beats Florida, Auburn – and of course – Tennessee.

Best of luck in 2011.

Dawg in Lex…

Shouldn’t UGA fans be worried about Boise St, USC, Mississippi St, Florida, Ole Miss on the road.?
After losing to UCF, and Colorada UGA fans have alot more to fear than Alabama losing to OPEN week opponents ( whom all played in major bowl games, played for Titles) unlike UGA who lost to teams who most considered also rans with the exception of South Carolina.

Let Alabama fans worry about the scholarships, you UGA fans just try to keep up with all the secondary violations that keep piling up in Athens, and the embarrasssment of your President on HBO last week, what a blow hard idiot he sounded like and it was good to hear the panel call him out on his bs.

I have to disagree with on one of those games for UGA that you have listed as a “loss”…that game being the Auburn game. Auburn is going to be a shell of what it was, it will be more like the final 5 games of the year in 2009. Auburn is in a total state of chaos, and there are players pointing fingers at one another asking the question” How much did you get paid?” That black cloud hanging over Auburn is not a weather storm, it is a black cloud of doubt and it is not moving.
