What you might have missed over the weekend…

A quick recap of a busy (and good) weekend in Bulldog Nation:

Craig Gullickson

Craig Gullickson

  • Baseball: Georgia swept a three-game series from No. 24 Mississippi State at Foley Field, winning 4-1 on Friday, 4-3 on Saturday and 4-1 on Sunday. The Dogs (14-14, 6-3 SEC) are on a five-game SEC winning streak. They got strong starting pitching all weekend. Friday: Alex Wood allowed one run on three hits and struck out eight in seven innings. Saturday: Michael Palazzone went 8 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Sunday: Craig Gullickson permitted one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. (Gullickson is the son of former major-league pitcher Bill Gullickson and the brother of UGA tennis player Chelsey Gullickson, the defending NCAA women’s singles champion.)
  • Gymnastics: The Gym Dogs are headed back to the NCAA Championships after a one-year absence. They finished second (behind UCLA) in the NCAA Southeast Regional in Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday to earn a spot in the 12-team field for the NCAA Championships April 15-17 in Cleveland. The Gym Dogs posted their second highest score of the season Saturday, 196.750. Kat Ding won the uneven bars with a 9.95.
  • Softball: Georgia, ranked No. 2 nationally, swept a two-game series from Tennessee-Martin, winning 6-1 on Saturday and 6-0 on Sunday, to extend its home winning streak to 37 games, the longest in NCAA Division I. The Bulldogs are 32-4 this season.
  • Tennis: Both the men’s and women’s teams extended their winning streaks to 12 matches and stayed unbeaten in the SEC by picking up victories over Ole Miss on Friday and Mississippi State on Sunday. The men’s team (17-3, 8-0 SEC) won by 4-3 scores in Oxford and Starkville, while the women’s team (14-1, 8-0 SEC) posted a pair of 6-1 victories in Athens.
  • Women’s golf: Georgia’s Marta Silva Zamora shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to win individual medalist honors at UGA’s 39th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Alabama won the team title. Georgia tied for sixth.
  • Football: The Bulldogs held their first scrimmage of the spring in Sanford Stadium on Saturday morning. Click here for a recap.

Destin,

Awful quiet in Catland up here. Devastated is the correct word.

Held UCONN to 56 points and lost.

Shelvin Mack is from Lexington so a lot of Cat fans are pulling for Butler.

If any UGA fan wants to see how you stack up in recruiting nation wide, please click on the link and just look at some of your SEC brothers and the number of times other schools show up in the lates Scout rankings as ” interested” and compare it to UGA and how local the recruits are. The state of Georgia is stacked in talent but in order to compete at the highest level in the country this staff is going to need to expand its travel budget and buy some of those cheap tickets on AirTran and Southwest and go elsewhere to add some recruits.

The better question is how did UGA lose to UCF in a bowl game? Or how did UGA lose to Colorado?

Richt has recruited well nationally. Matt Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, Aron White, Arthur Lynch are justa few great Dawgs from out of the southeast.

Many Bama fans like this site because it’s talking football – and a great forum.

Also – because the focus is a tradional SEC powerhouse program – UGA – we feel compelled to talk UGA football as well.

This site is not only for UGA fans – but all fans.

From my perspective – I hope Richt will have a good enough season to stay at UGA – he is a class act and I hope he has learned some lessons in being a HC.

As for the football team – there are so many open questions about the DAWGS that we could debate from now until season kickoff. If you have that many questions – then what does that say about the state of your program???? College football is great as there is nothing static – classes graduate – players come and go – and every year is a new year.

UGA football 2011:
The good!
– your QB
– your T/E’s
– Your LB’s seem very athletic

The questions for 2011:
– your O-Line (face it – a liability the last 2 years)
– your RBs (bad O-Line makes decent backs look bad – but King and Ealey created a lot of problems with their personal issues)
– your WR’s – I think UGA will be good at WR – even with Green gone.
– your D-Line – should improve this year – the NG you picked up will help – and it all starts there.
– your coaching / player development – has this been missing or what???? We will find out

What to think?
– I do not know – UGA could go 6-7 again or could go 10-3!!!!

Schedule:
Wins – Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy, Kentucky, NM STATE
Probable Wins – GT, Tennessee
Probable Losses: Boise State, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Florida and Auburn

This puts UGA at 7-5 – but games are unpredictable.

If UGA beats Boise State – then S. Carolina – this team could make thinks really exciting in Athens.

I do hope UGA beats Florida, Auburn – and of course – Tennessee.

Best of luck in 2011.

With With Richt….

In the past Richt has recruited a little outside his comfort zone, but recently he has fallen flat.

The three best players on offense in the past 5 years all came from outside the state of Georgia.

Stafford, Moreno and Green.

With quality of high school players in Georgia, Richt rarely needs to recruit out of state talent. Just lock up the top in talent players and cherry pick great out of state players like Orson Charles, Aaron Murray, John Theus, and Keith Marshall.

Win with Richt….yeah and the last three years he has taken it on the chin and the bulldawg nation is tumbling down the respected and feared list….keep cherry picking and you will continue to lose game after game and not being a factor is what UGA will be known for.

Dawg in Lex…

Shouldn’t UGA fans be worried about Boise St, USC, Mississippi St, Florida, Ole Miss on the road.?
After losing to UCF, and Colorada UGA fans have alot more to fear than Alabama losing to OPEN week opponents ( whom all played in major bowl games, played for Titles) unlike UGA who lost to teams who most considered also rans with the exception of South Carolina.

Let Alabama fans worry about the scholarships, you UGA fans just try to keep up with all the secondary violations that keep piling up in Athens, and the embarrasssment of your President on HBO last week, what a blow hard idiot he sounded like and it was good to hear the panel call him out on his bs.

I have to disagree with on one of those games for UGA that you have listed as a “loss”…that game being the Auburn game. Auburn is going to be a shell of what it was, it will be more like the final 5 games of the year in 2009. Auburn is in a total state of chaos, and there are players pointing fingers at one another asking the question” How much did you get paid?” That black cloud hanging over Auburn is not a weather storm, it is a black cloud of doubt and it is not moving.

Not one of these bozos would start for any of the top teams in the SEC.

Plenty of misfortune on the football practice field. Defense got trucked all day by a 5-foot-6, 167-pound walk-on tailback and a there are lot of UGA players hurt already.

The S&C and nutrition programs don’t seem to be working.

Uh oh.

Auburn is addressing some issues now and may struggle to win their games against the west, but they have more than enough to sweep the east this year.

Isn’t Auburn playing SC, UF, and UGA this year? Replacing something like 15 starters, 4 of thier O-line, and most notable the 2 most critical pieces if thier success last year gives you that much confidence?

Just Got To Say It,

Look at the Scouts.com top 300 and you will see that UGA has offered 50 of the top 300 in the country. Georgia only has 21 of the top 300, so I would say that UGA is offering a lot of kids from other states. They offered 14 out of the 21 Georgia players on the list and that means they offered 36 outside of the state. Sounds like they are trying to recruit out of state to me.

If anybody is interested, the sports.com top 300 for the class is out now. There are a total of 21 Georgians in the list, and UGA has offered 14 of them. UGA has also offered 50 of the three hundred. That means that UGA has offered 36 people outside of the state of Georgia. Sounds like to me, they are going for kids out of state.
