A review of Bulldogs’ first spring scrimmage (and who is Brandon Harton?)

ATHENS – Georgia’s football team held its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning in Sanford Stadium, and coach Mark Richt had no complaints afterward.

“I thought today was outstanding, really outstanding, in regard to the guys playing with a lot of energy,” Richt said. “Some really nice plays on both sides of the ball.”

Georgia didn’t keep statistics on the scrimmage, which was closed to the public and media. Richt offered these observations afterward:

  • Tight end Orson Charles “had a pretty big day, making some nice catches,” wide receiver Michael Bennett “caught my eye” and wide receiver Marlon Brown had a “very nice touchdown grab in tight coverage — reached up and snatched it away from a defender [on a] very nice throw by [quarterback Aaron] Murray.”
  • Tailbacks Washaun Ealey and Carlton Thomas didn’t participate because of hamstring injuries, but Richt said Caleb King continued a good spring. “Caleb has been practicing very well. He’s practicing with great focus and a physical attitude and … a lot of energy.”
  • Richt singled out 5-foot-6, 167-pound walk-on tailback Brandon Harton. (”Harton did good,” said Richt, who then turned to a staffer and asked: “What’s Harton’s first name?”) Harton “took a long run to the house” — a 65-yard touchdown — for the third-team offense vs. the third-team defense, Richt said. “He did a very nice job running the ball.”
  • But “by no means” was the scrimmage “just an offensive juggernaut,” Richt said. “It was a really good competitive day. I wouldn’t say either side of the ball dominated.”
  • Defensively, outside linebacker Jarvis Jones was “in on a bunch of plays” and cornerback Brandon Boykin “did a nice job in coverage,” Richt said. “We tried to throw [Boykin's] way a few times and got nothing.”
  • And Richt took note of nose tackle Kwame Geathers’ progress: “Going against [center] Ben Jones is not easy, and [Geathers] made some plays. He’s making very good improvement.”

Harton in spotlight

Harton, who is from Tattnall County, said he had opportunities to play college football at Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern, “but I really wanted to play for Georgia.” So he enrolled at UGA and walked on last summer as a wide receiver. He said he asked the coaches “if it’d be all right” to switch to running back this spring.

“Obviously everyone here is good, but you just have to go out every day and work hard,” said Harton, who is Ealey’s cousin.  “And whenever you get your opportunity, you’ve got to take advantage of it.”

Teammates enjoyed Harton’s moment in the limelight Saturday.

Murray said Harton “had a nice run where he, like, ducked under two guys fast as heck, and he was gone.” Charles said Harton “was breaking runs and making everybody excited.”

Etc.

Among players who didn’t participate in the scrimmage: fullback Bruce Figgins (stiff neck), linebacker Richard Samuel (rib injury) and tight end Aron White (unknown injury). . . . Safety Bacarri Rambo, expected to miss the rest of spring practice because of a sprained MCL, was not at the scrimmage. Rambo was attending his sister’s wedding, Richt said. . . . Murray said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo “had some every positive words” for the offense after the scrimmage. “You know it’s a pretty good day when he has some good comments to say,” Murray said. . . . Linebacker Christian Robinson said the defensive line “has really stepped up.”

2 years is what I give this coaching staff. If they can’t win the NC in two years, then they never will under this administration. The next two seasons the schedules are very favorable with a bye week before Florida. But if we fall flat it will mostly because we need a new offensive playcaller, start out way to slow at the begining of the season, and uh oh yeah, can’t beat Florida!

It was good to hear some positive comments about a couple of the WRs. I would sure love to hear an honest acessment of where the OL stands at this point in the spring. I think at the end of the day; as the OL goes so goes UGAs offense.

Lots of questions remain. It was nice to hear a few answers though. Go Dawgs!

Well golly folks. It sounds like things are back on track. I am particularly encouraged by a 5′6″ walk on running back busting a long run against the 3rd string D. Watch out SEC!!! We’re coming at ya!!!

Good grief what a joke. If it were up to me Richt would be fired on that press conference alone. I’m telling you right now folks. This program has absolutely no freaking idea how to play championship football anymore. Watch and see this Fall.

Thanks.

JE, you must have missed the part where we just lost to CENTRAL FLORIDA in our last game and only scored 6 points on them. We are in no position to talk down to the little guys at the moment. If we play the way we did last year Boise will beat us by 2+ TDs.

Some of you are not helping this team with your delusions.
Thanks.

I am not talking down to anyone “dawgfan” Some of us that went to the school, support them through thick and thin. I am simply illustrating that this guy needs to let his team win it on the field and not insult the team that has a 1-0 record against his team. And that one win was a slaughter

To your other point, I was at the bowl game (and every other game except 2) and it was an awful performance. I agree we cannot play like that ever again and have a shot at beating any one. I do not think we will be playing like that any time soon.

I do not see how it was delusional at all. No one on this comment thread is “helping this team” in any way. As someone that goes to all of the games and yells til my throat hurts I help the team know that all of the people out there dogging them are not the majority. it is not delusional. It is supporting my school and the teams we put out. I was at the Bball games before Fox and Baseball games before Polk turned things around also.

dawgfan, I would be willing to guess that if you polled the players and asked them what YOU can do to help, they would not say “oh definetely go on and on about what happened last year”. Great that YOU want to define what being a fan is to YOU, for your own purposes. We all do that. But how about let other folks decide how they THEY think they can best serve the team with thier support, or what attitude they want to take.

Never even heard of this Harton kid. That sure is a tiny frame for SEC football but I guess there can be exceptions to the norm. And I’ve been expecting Malcome to be the biggest surprise this year at RB. It’ll be interesting to see who shines from here on out. Go Dawgs!

Fair enough AltamahaDawg. Let’s talk about this year. I think we go 7-5. I just don’t think we have the horses up front to succeed in the SEC. Also, Bobo is a mediocre playcaller that routinely gets whipped by high quality defenses. More than anything though, I don’t think our players have what it takes between the ears to win champioships. These guys just don’t get it, and that falls on Richt. How do you and JE see us doing any better? You know, since you guys are such better fans than me I’m sure you’ve got some insight that I don’t. Where am I wrong? In answering that question remember that we just went 14-11 the past two seasons and 2007 was a looooong time ago.

Thanks.

@Pat … so UGA wasn’t “trying” in the the bowl game against Central FL?? That’s a very convenient excuse for losing … but then again, convenient excuses is what UGA is ALL about. UGA fans delusional beyond belief, as usual.

Very exciting news from Richt. This offense that couldn’t score a t.d against S.C. in the first game, nor could it score a T.D. against C.Florida in the last game, has a walk-on midget as the highlight for the offense. This offense will be a joke again with booboo and Richt leading the way. And the defense sounds like it has really improved against the run. If i hear one more comment from Christian Robinson i will throw up. This guy runs his mouth and makes comments everyday, and he wouldn’t even be starting if two other linebackers hadn’t have disappeared from the team. When you have a backup linebacker being the leader of your defense you are in serious trouble. No linebackers with any experience does not bode well in the SEC. But, hey UGA has a midget running back as a secret weapon when booboo wets the bed against S.C.

I’ll tell you something I am excited about: the speed of the linebacking corps! With the slowest of the top 5 or 6 at a 4.6 out of HS, they have the potential to run down backs. I believe Samuel is faster than our offensive backfield.

Dawgfan, glad to see there are some UGA fans that don’t drink the Richt kool-aid, and can face reality. The reality is UGA has been a non-factor in the SEC and the national picture for 3 years running. There is nothing to think that will change with the returning players and coaches. There are no playmakers on offense or defense coming back from last year’s team, and unless i missed something there are no better coaches coming back. Our only playmakers on offense and defense from last year have declared for the NFL. And for all of you fans that think Murray is God, maybe you should look at his stats against good defenses in the SEC. He was average at best. Maybe the 3 interceptions against Fl. make you feel better about this guy. Our best Q.B.will be wearing an LSU uniform this year, not a UGA one. And we can thank Reverend Richt for that!!
