Jones’ ’screaming, yelling, pushing, going crazy’ fires up UGA offense

ATHENS — After being dominated by the defense in Tuesday’s practice, Georgia’s offense bounced back on Thursday.

“We looked a whole lot better than we did the other day,” quarterback Aaron Murray said. “I feel like guys were a lot more energized.”

He attributed the difference to Georgia’s starting center.

Ben Jones got on us a little bit the other day after practice, really got us pumped up,” Murray said.

How did Jones do that?

“Just screaming, yelling, pushing, going crazy, being Ben Jones,” Murray said. “Which is a great thing because he’s not only one of the leaders of the offense but of the team. . . . You don’t want to mess up if Ben Jones is watching you.”

———-

Tailback Washaun Ealey missed his second consecutive practice Thursday because of a strained left hamstring. He was lifting weights on the side as the practice began.

Georgia lists Ealey’s status as day-to-day. The Bulldogs practice again Friday and scrimmage Saturday.

Also sidelined Thursday: offensive lineman Austin Long (shoulder) and receiver Chris Conley (undisclosed injury). Neither player’s injury is thought to be serious.

That kind of energy and leadership is what this team needs from veterans like Ben Jones. That shows me that Jones isn’t trying to just play better at his position, but improve the play of everyone around him. I hate to admit it, but that’s what made the team Tim Tebow played on so effective. He was out there “screaming, yelling, pushing, going crazy” every game, and his team responded, winning 2 national championships with him while he attended that school.

I love me some Ben Jones! We don’t need to recruit in Bama that much but my god was that a good pick up.

He held is own as a freshman against Mt.Cody(although Cody did win the match up overall IMO).

He ripped up the turf at Joke by Coke as retribution for the hedges(wish more players had done that for some pay back!).

And he wasn’t one bit afraid of Mr. big Bad Fairly. He and the rest of our line protected Murray just fine, the thug just kept hitting Murray late. One way or another, he was going to get to Murray regardless if it was fully legal. But when things got out of hand at the end, Mr. Big Bad Fairly wanted nothing to do with Ben. Watch the replay. Ben Jones is being the aggressor on replay and Fairly bows out, walks about 20 yards, and then does a little dance for us while Thugmaster Trooper Taylor shows us some moves as well.

Mean a$$ country boy from Alabama….I wouldn’t want to mess with him either!

Oh yeah….and he roughed Fairley up pretty good in the pile up so……heck yeah…love me some Ben Jones! Sic’em!

Yeah, that’s why Ben Jones is thought of as one of the best centers in the country. You didn’t have any problem with Fairley cheap shots on Murray but you do with Jones going after him. I see now.

As far as Bobo running “predictable” plays. There is nothing in football that makes you more of one bad dude than to run a running play that the other team KNOWS is coming and it still gains yards.

If our OL could be strong enough and have the right run blocking technique to block folks, we could be a running team. Searles did a great job at teaching the OL how to pass protect. Our run blocking left a lot to be desired.

Maybe Friend is trying to change that.

I could give a flying flip about Ben Jones yelling and screaming at practice. Its just more empty talk and chest pounding. Richt needs to restrict media access until this team proves that it can handle it, which it has not done. No amount of screaming and yelling is going to help us beat Florida or anyone else for that matter. Work on the blocking and tackling and SHUT THE HELL UP.

You won’t hear me say the helmet to the back wasn’t a dirty hit. But UGA showed their lack of focus by taking their shots when the game was decided, and even moreso by actually leaving the sideline and taking to the field.

Any explanation why your players felt the need to rush the field in preparation for a brawl but Auburns’ didn’t?

I think it is interesting what certain guys respond to. Some are fiery like a Tim Tebow and some are more cerebral like a Peyton Manning. Which approach is better? The one that delivers the results! When the fiery approach works, people will call you ” passionate, a leader” and when it doesn’t they’ll say “you’re full of hot air, a buffoon”. When the cerebral approach works, people will call you ” cool, calm, and collected”, and when it doesn’t they’ll say ” you lack passion, or are soft, or not a leader”.

As a player, I was never one to get into all the pre-game headbutting and theatrics. It wasn’t something that made me play better or harder. It was more important for me to know my assignments, and pay attention to what was going on. But I’m a thinker not a feeler. Tell me what I need to do, and let me do it. Some folks however ARE feelers. Getting pumped up DOES make them play better. So which approach is better? Again, its the one that delivers results! Results are what matters, not the bells and whistles! Enthusiasm and attitude are helpful, but nothing replaces preparation, fundamentals, and work ethic. Nothing! Those are the foundations for success, everything is just the whip cream on top.

An offensive lineman has to pump this offense up? Are you serious? Ben Jones is a leader on offense, not Murray? What is so difficult about this “valuted” offense Georgia runs? How did Cam play one season and win a BCSC, but this makes Murray’s 3rd spring game (he was a REDSHIRT freshman that reported early to UGA), but Murray has yet to figure out a offense I can sit on my couch and guess what plays they will run? UGA was 11th in scoring, and most of the scoring was against prevent defenses when winning teams had the lead. Murray put up respectable numbers against losing teams, and winning teams with prevent defenses. Some of you fans need to wake up, he’s tapped out his potential, QB’s hardly ever duplicate their first year because now opposing teams have film on him.

Maybe so, but compared to UGA, Auburn is The Land of Oz.

There’s a reason why UGA is called The Cesspool of the South. :-)

Obvious Question

Ealey is a very talented player. He has gained over 1500 yards in about a season and a half. (He didn’t play the first half of his freshman sseason because of possible redshirting.)He is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. If he improves ball security and his blocking, he could be a very good Georgia RB.

Screaming, yelling, pushing and going crazy gets you a 15 yard penalty Benny, not touchdowns….Maybe what UGA needs is a offensive coordinator. Auburn wins a national title with a 1 year QB, but UGA “valuted” offense is much more difficult to understand, yet doesn’t score more points than Auburn.

Dawg Gone…What does Cam being paid or not being paid have to do why Murray can’t get UGA offense moving? Cam was a 19 year old player just as Murray is, sounds like you’re making excuses. The facts is Cam won it in 1 year, and this is Murrays 3rd spring practice and the offensive lineman is firing up the offense that has been dominated by the defense since spring practice started. Cam made SEC defenses look like swiss cheese, Murray…well, he’s still trying…..

Tide troll is just upset that Ben (one of the few athletes from Alabama) left that crappy state and came to UGA!

Shawn– Tide Roll happens to be right on the money in this case— Jones when he is mad is a very good player and if he needs to get mad to be at his best and to be a vocal leader then that is all good. But having watched Jones and then Burnette, Burnette definitely is the better player overall and does give us a better chance of being a dominating, winning and consistent team on offense. As for Sturdivant I have no doubt about his ability to be a great and dominating Tackle, but I have very grave doubts about Cordy Glenn as a good portion of the mental mistakes/breakdowns on our offensive line the last three years was him being out of place, not adjusting or just missing the block altogether etc.

Uga’s problem has and apparently will continue to in-state talent lost, especially regarding your offensive line. Over the past three years some of the most athletically gifted offensive lineman in the country have left the state. Not for UNC or West Virginia, but for the very teams Richt needs to beat to save his job! These athletes aren’t “throw-a-ways.” JAMES CARPENTER was an All-SEC left tackle and had 30 starts for Alabama, including their National Championship team. The same with offensive guard CHANCE WARMACK. South Carolina’s ROKE WATKINS,6′4″340, is arguably the best Right Guard in the Conference, and dominated Uga’s defensive line when they played last year. JUJUAN JAMES was named to the Freshman All American team at right tackle for Tennessee last year. and, like WARMACK, will be a 4-year starter. Ole Miss center A.J. HAWKINS, from Atlanta’s MLK high school, started as a freshman at center. Auburn just featured Ed Christian, a 6′4″ 300lb athlete from the great program at Lowndes Co. as an up and coming offensive guard. Alabama recently did a feature on their newest commitment, Cedar Grove’s mammouth 6′6″ 300lb. offensive tackle, BRANDON GREENE, entitled “The Sky is the Limit”. The list goes on and on! This is why ya’ll aren’t competitive with the upper echelon. ROLL TIDE

Your problem is compounded when you counter these recruiting blunders with athletes, like Ben Jones, who, quite frankly, is not an SEC calibre offensive lineman. You can’t continue to lose in-state talent like those mentioned above to your competition, and attempt to offset these losses with an offensive line class ranked 9th in the SEC (per Rivals). The negative margin between talent lost vs talent gained is incredible. Instead of having in state kids such as CHANCE WARMACK,JUJUAN JAMES,ED CHRISTIAN and BRANDON GREENE to help with your offensive line depth, Richt goes after Florida’s Kevin Perez, Alabama’s Jonathan Owens, and Tanner Strickland. Each of these players were listed as 2nd string offensive lineman on last year’s post spring depth chart and each quit the program. They quit because they were not SEC calibre athletes much like at least 30% of your current players and 2011 signees. Your problem with Richt shouldn’t be wins and losses, it should be his and Bobo’s incredible inability to recognize the problem and do something about it. Your offensive line staters, IF THEY STAY HEALTHY, look good. Your depth and future on the offensive line looks terrible. It’s like Richt and Bobo don’t see the train coming until it’s run over them.

Q: How does the Auburn man compliment his date to the homecoming game?
A: Hi Brenda. Nice toof.

Let's talk numbers, Tide Roll

April 1st, 2011
4:20 pm

1.The state of Georgia has about 200 D-1 players annually. UGA can basically give out 25 ships a year (the Dogs are not as “creative” as some other coaches in the numbers game). If we sign 5 out of staters, that leaves 20 Georgians available. How many OL are we supposed to get?

2. You keep bringing up players that developed at other schools. Hindsight is 20-20. Even if UGA puts 40 OL on scholarship, there will still be a few that get away and do well, due to the talent in this state. Some of these guys were sleepers in high school, and most of those that were highly rated were recruited by UGA.

3. You keep bringing up JuJuan James. You are aware that Georgia tried to recruit him, aren’t you? Was Richt supposed to bring a Brinks truck to Gwinnett to seal the deal? You do your best to recruit a prospect and sometimes they get away, nothing you can ethically do about it.

4. Why be critical of Ben Jones? He will likely be in the NFL next year.

5. I assume you are a Bama fan, but sometimes I wonder. You seem almost disappointed that some of the Bama signees from Georgia went there instead of to Athens.

6. Brandon Greene may turn out to be great, but I challenge you to find one recruiting analyst who thinks he is in the same elite class as John Theus.

7. You constantly point out Georgia’s recruiting misses. What about Kirby and Nick not landing Cam and Fairly? Those are two huge recruiting mistakes that likely cost Bama another NC. Does it upset you that Bama whiffed on the top offensive player, and the top defensive player in America?

UGAB,

I think CMR is going to be a lot more involved in the offense this year than in the last couple of years. If I had one thing that disturbed me most, it would be that CMR almost seemed to be seperated and detached on the sidelines from what his team was doing on the field. I know he cared but he let his assistants run the game too much at times, and the fans could see it, more than he did at times. I think he will be a lot less CEO and more boss now, and I believe we will see the changes on the field this year. This AD I believe has helped CMR correct some things ten times more than Evans could or would be able to help. UGA is back.

It is really sad that a young man (Trinton Sturdivant) has given a lot to this program and his senior year he has to focus on a position that he has never played his entire college career. It is obvious he is a true left tackle and even being out football for two years AND no spring practice since entering uga he did a good job this year. This past year when I watched it was evident that T.S. did not have enough endurance for four quarters, thats what spring conditioning is for. Truly it is hard for this young man to show leadership in a time of need if he is focusing on learning a new position, coach, and probably battling with confidence at this point. GO DAWGS:(

It Ain't Rocket Science

April 3rd, 2011
9:09 am

Steve,
I think I read where Boise state finished in the 60’s ranking in the recruiting. Boise state always seems to be able to coach the 2 and 3 star rated atheletes up pretty good though. Boise state will be good but they are filling a lot of the skill positions with new personnel. If UGA controls the line of scrimmage and makes their QB move around a lot in the pocket, UGA should be able to handle them. Our O line has got to step up this year, for the offense to be effective. Balance between the pass and run is really going to depend on the line. For sure, Boise will make a game of it, but I like our chances with a bigger d and o line and the experience we can bring to the table. If CMR gets involved more in the offense plan and game flow, they will be able to win the game. Just my opinion though, since I will not be playing a single down or coaching one, so it is all up to the team to do it on the field. I just think their sense of urgency, will help them this year. People forget that the players and coaches are just as aware of how bad it was last year, and are trying to do everything they can to correct the situation.
