ATHENS — Barring injury, Trinton Sturdivant and Cordy Glenn surely will be Georgia’s starting offensive tackles this year. It’s not clear at this point, though, which one of them will play left tackle and which one will play right tackle.
Both are getting work at both spots during spring practice, new offensive line coach Will Friend said Tuesday night.
“Whoever wins that job,” Friend said, “will be the left tackle,” entrusted to protect quarterback Aaron Murray’s blind side.
Glenn started all 13 games last season at left guard and moved this spring to tackle, where he is “rusty,” Friend said, but “could be a dominant player.” Sturdivant started seven games last season at left tackle, where he also started 13 games as a freshman in 2007 before missing almost all of the ‘08 and ‘09 seasons with knee injuries.
Kenarious Gates and Justin Anderson have been considered the leading candidates to start at the guards, but Friend said backup center Chris Burnette worked some at first-team guard Tuesday.
“I grade everything that goes on,” Friend said, “and Chris has graded pretty good, so he got to work with the 1’s at the guard spot.”
————-
Brandon Boykin, Georgia’s career record-holder in kickoff return yards, also might return punts this year.
He is getting a serious look in the role this spring, along with Branden Smith, Tavarres King, Carlton Thomas and Rantavious Wooten.
“We’ve got to try all those guys; that’s what spring is for,” said Bryan McClendon, who coaches the punt-return unit. “Hopefully somebody is taking that job over pretty soon here.”
Boykin, a rising senior cornerback, has 1,813 career kickoff return yards, including an SEC-record three 100-yard returns.
As for why Boykin hasn’t returned punts in the past, McClendon noted that he already was playing a large number of snaps between defense and special teams. “But right now if he’s the best guy for the job, he’s the one that’s going to do it,” McClendon said.
————-
By all accounts, the defense dominated the offense in Tuesday’s practice.
“The defense pretty much got the best of us,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “We got it kind of handed to us, but it’ll be interesting to see how we respond on Thursday to a little adversity we had [Tuesday].”
Coach Mark Richt didn’t meet with reporters Tuesday but said in a statement that the defense “pretty much shut down the offense.”

Anybody read about former UT QB Erik Ainge being a drug addict on the ESPN college football blog?? He said he basicallyed used coke and was also addicted to pain killers while playing at UT, his senior year of 07. He also said the team doctor gave him the pain killers, and when he stopped, he just got them from anyone who would sell them to him. He also mentioned how he was busted last year by Knoxville police but they let him go and local authorities never pressed charges.
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.
Athens PD needs to take note! Every college town does this except for the APD, so all of you other SEC schools can suck it!

Sturdivant to start? You better have a GREAT replacement working to be the STARTER at a seconds notice.
Boykin returning punts sounds great. I figure with the Dawgs defense the other team will only punt maybe 3 times a game. Even Boykin can’t screw all 3 chances a game he will get.
Cordy will be much better this year. He can’t be any worse.
BLINDSIDE II the story of how A Murray forgives his teammates as he learns life’s lessons and how to walk again. It is a story of how Murray was TRAGICALLY Crippled in the UGA v MISS State game and couldn’t walk or 2 years. It seams the MSU Bulldogs were paying back UGA for Ben Jone’s attempted crippling of a MSU player in the 2010 game.

What I am about to say is EXTREMELY selfish…….
As a UGA fan, I want Boykin returning EVERY kick the Dawgs receive this year. We need to use the talent we have while we still have it. I couldn’t care less about “trying to keep him healthy for the NFL”, since I really do not like nor care about the NFL. I felt the same way about AJ Green last year, since it was obvious we would be losing him early. I wanted to see him with the ball in his hands every opportunity we had despite any risk.
If Boykin were a sophomore or even a Junior, my thoughts on him returning punts may be a bit different. But damnit, I want him on the field every chance possible this year.
The NFL pucker up while I bend right over in front of them. Once a Dawg leaves the program, early or as a graduate, the only time I will pay them attention is on SportsCenter, and i may or may not give an “atta boy” when i hear their name called.

What is Richt’s MNC/ BCS Championship record since 2001? well, it is 0-10. What is 2-10 since 2001? It is Richt’s SEC championships.

I don’t totally blame Mr Richt for his lack of success at uga like most. I blame the sports director who hired him. The state of ga is a runningback state where the kids are accustomed to running the football whereas Mr Richt offensive scheme is more geared to pass the football.
The kids on the west are accustomed to passing the football than they are running the football which would of been a better fit for Mr Richt to coach at a university on the west coast where he could recruit the tpye of players that are geared to pass protect for his offensive schemes. Runningbacks and offensive lineman on the west coast are better blockers.
Vince Dooley almost won 3 national championships by pounding the football down the other team thoats. His qbs were average at best. We had 2 runningbacks from this state to win the heisman trophy. If Mr Richt want to win a championship at uga, he need to turn the program into a high power running team.

UGA has now been passed by:
Alabama (since Saban arrived)
Auburn (national title = where’s UGA’s?)
Mississippi State (Dan Mullins – the man!)
Arkansas (Petrino!!!)
South Carolina (Spurriers team have totally outplayed UGA last two years)
LSU – very consistent – down years – will win 9 games – always competitive
Florida – has always been ahead of UGA the last 20 years

Sturdivant should be our starting LT. The guy was a Freshman All-American in 07 but had bad luck with his knee in 08 and 09. If he had played both those seasons, he’d be one of the best LT’s in the nation and would be getting lots of NFL Draft pub. Probably still will after his senior season. I’m excited to see what Glenn can do at RT. He’s a real road grader; I just hope he can pass protect as well as he can run block because playing tackle is nothing like playing guard, when you play tackle your on an island, you have some help at guard.
On our defense, don’t look into it too much because the defense SHOULD be outplaying the offense in the spring. Installation and rust can affect an offense in the spring time. Timing, etc. I’d be worried if the defense wasn’t shutting down an offense now. Let’s just wait till fall to see if this defense has really turned the corner.

Our starting O-line should be: Sturdivant, Gates, Jones, Anderson, Glenn. That’s a beast of an O-line. All those boys are 315+. Glenn and Anderson being the biggest at 348, and 326 respectively give or take a biscuit. Our defense should be good but I really want to know our starters in the secondary. I have a pretty good feel about our front 7 and who will start there, but our secondary is a concern for me. I know Boykin will be one of our corners and Rambo will be one of our safeties, but the rest are up for grabs.

Defense dominates offense…. I love it. I think over the past three seasons, our offense outplayed our defense in scrimmage play. When fall rolled around, we saw that our defense was not very good and our offense was pedestrian. I love the fact that CTG has stepped up the game and is challenging the offense. This can only mean that our offense will have to improve. I would love for the D to take Bobo and the offense to the wood shed every day!!!! We all know D wins championships and it was UGA’s D that carried SEC championships, not the O. Instead of having the offense think they are better than they are, have them playing crazy because the D is dominating. It will force the O to work harder than ever and hopefully, instill the swagger of the old Junkyard D!

Wow, I thought this blog was about Offensive tackles and kick returners. Must have been mistaken or is it the fact that the usual UGA haters are on the blog, spouting the same old rhetoric they do everyday. You people need to go to your own schools blogs and comment, (if that is what you think you are doing), and quit trying to trash UGA so much. You seldom offer any sign that you are in the least knowledgeable about coaching, playing or even what the darn game is about.
2011 is a new year, and it will be night and day different from 2010. The defense is now a year old, the QB has a year under his belt and best of all I think, the players realize they have got to do better.
Ok, now all of you negative people can feel free to critisize me now. So used to seeing the same old comments, I mostly don’t bother with them anymore. Everybody has to climb fools hill, some just less time to reach the summit faster than others. And some take up resdidence once they get there.

Switching Sturdivant and Glenn’s spots could be for the best. I love Sturdivant, he’s a DGD, but two major knee surgeries surely compromised his flexibility, and he’s probably lost a step and some quickness in his footwork.
Burnette appears to be the first substitution on the interior OL.
I’ll take Boykin, Smith, T. King or Wooten returning kicks. Need quicks and elusiveness as well as the ability to catch it and hold on to it.

Tide Roll as a former offensive lineman who played for Dooley I appreciate your comments as being dead on when it comes to us playing guys out of position- Case in point we put Richard Samuel as a running back even though anyone with a brain could see this guy was a tremendous talent at linebacker but was only passable as a running back. Now two years later he might get on the field as a linebacker. We also did the samething with Kiante Tripp who was a tremendous talent as a defensive lineman who kept getting moved around and never allowed to settle in as a defensive end which was his natural position. Anyway I hope the Dawgs make tremendous improvement on the offensive line this spring and fall and we see a power running game to take pressure off our QB, receivers and our defense.

Punt returning is a different animal from kickoff returns. When you field a ko, the closest man to you is 30 yards away. When you field a punt, he is “inside your halo”. I would like to see a stat on how many punt returns had penalties on them. We consistently turned an average punt into a great punt by adding a 15 yard penalty. Boykin is not the best player on the field for UGA, Murray is. So just fair catch the ball and give it to Murray. Don’t make him go an extra 15 yards because of a stupid penalty.

One of the marks of a great coach is to “coach” and game plan, a team to it’s strengths, IMO CMR tries to mold a team to what he wants it to be despite the talent.

You will appreciate him more once he is gone… I for one am ready for him to leave and be successful in the league so he won’t have to listen to people who unappreciates his talent when he’s doing it for free… at least he will be getting paid on the next level while people try to hate… and anybody that is asking for anyone else to return UGA’s kicks or punts should jump off a damn bridge… and yes I am a Brandon Boykin supporter… I may be related to him… hell I may even be him…

Tech’s football players have the highest SAT scores of any public university in the country.
They do indeed, and that’s just one reason why Tech fans love their team so much.
No, they can’t compete with UGA’s thugs and morons, but Tech players don’t end up pushing shopping carts or riding the back of garbage trucks like UGA players after Mark Richt dumps them when their eligibility is up.
That’s just one of those inconvenient truths for dawgtards.
There’s a reason why UGA is known worldwide as The Cesspool of the South.

Buh Bye,
The only cesspool in the State of Georgia has the opening to the ground on North Ave. in Atlanta. Why in the world don’t you just go to your corner and play with yourself, if this is all you have to say. What an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!
I usually don’t bother to even acknowledge morons that come on a blog to start a arguement, but you are an exception.

Thanks for Ben Jones. He is on pace to start 49 or 50 games at UGA. Wonder why he snubbed Bama to be a DAWG?

Your football team can’t play a lick, but they are hell on crosswords and math problems. That is like saying your wife is the ugliest woman in a beauty pageant, but she is a great pea picker.

Buh Bye: Thanks for all the information. It is obviously credible and rigorously derived. We believe you now: UGA is the Cesspool of the South. We get it. Please find new material. Let me help: “Uga has fleas” or something like that. Go ahead, hurt us.

In referencing the recent AJC article regarding on UGA tailgating, it would appear that there is some justification for the cesspool reference…….
The breaking point came on Sept. 12, 2009, when workers collected from North Campus about 70 tons of garbage and mounds of tents, grills, coolers and chairs. That day, fans were witnessed urinating on public buildings and defecating outdoors.

JTF: Yes, and that problem has been addressed and fixed. No doubt the area around N. Ave and the TECH campus will soon be fixed, too, you think?

Defense dominates offense again today. Murray isn’t the answer…LeMay should be given a equal shot at QB, if CMR wants to keep his job.

John,
How many different years have you seen the same headline at any school or even NFL team, when early practices start for any team. Defenses should dominate at first because the offense, is implementing new stuff and they are on a much steeper learning curve than the defense in most cases. The defense can simply react to offensive movement, and let’s not forget, they are all on the same team. It is not like the defensive and offensive teams are segregated and therefore are surprised at what the offense will be doing. I just hope that UGA’s opponents this year are confused and we are less predictable and therefore, have a good game plan. I believe that CMR will have more input into the game plan and possibly even be involved in decisions during the game. Bobo might just be on a shorter leash this time. No more CEO for CMR.
Murray will do just fine if 1. He actually has a littler help with the ball, like a decent running game, 2. He has enough time to actually QB instead of run for his life, and lest we forget, 3. He has decent play calling from the OC on the sidelines. Half of Murray’s problem last year, was trying to do too much because the offensive support from the men around him was pretty shallow by any standard. With maturity, and he did grow up a lot last year, he will learn how to control the game a little better and utilize his skills better. It will be a whole lot easier if he has a couple of seconds in the backfield and running backs that think a little about their jobs, not only as runners. but pass blockers and in some cases, safety valves, when the downfield receivers are covered.
