ATHENS – Georgia resumed spring football practice Tuesday with tailback Washaun Ealey on the sideline because of a strained left hamstring.
Georgia officially listed Ealey’s status as “day to day”; the Bulldogs’ next practice is Thursday.
“It’s nothing serious,” running backs coach Bryan McClendon said of the injury.
McClendon said Ealey and fellow tailback Caleb King, both of whom have been suspended twice since the start of last season for off-field issues, are having positive and productive springs.
“I do think generally they’re doing well,” McClendon said. “They’re coming out there and busting their tail, working as hard as anybody. They’re really being good teammates to everybody.”
Ealey, King, Carlton Thomas and Ken Malcome are sharing the tailback snaps evenly with the first- and second-string offensive units this spring, McClendon said. Prized prospect Isaiah Crowell will join the competition when he arrives this summer.
Asked how the returning tailbacks have handled all the public attention that has been focused on Crowell, McClendon said: “I think they’ve handled it as well as they could. I think the biggest person who needs to worry about all the attention Isaiah is getting is Isaiah. Isaiah needs to make sure by the time he comes up here he [is] ready to roll. We have talked about that a few times.”
The other tailbacks “need to worry about things they can control,” McClendon said. “They can’t control who’s coming in. . . . The only thing they need to control is the reps they get out there and making them count.”
– Tim Tucker, AJC

Feel sorry for Ealey or any player who gets hurt, but this could be his swan song.

King and Ealey certainly haven’t helped themselves in the last year. But I think they can still be a big part of this team. Let’s not write them off just yet. A little competition can be good. Let’s just hope Crowell comes to Athens in great shape and is able to pick up the offense quickly.

Tide Roll, as much as some people (mostly ignorant I might add) can’t stand it, you’re absolutely right. Richt focuses mostly on bringing high profile “position players” in. According to Richt we have 13 Offensive Linemen on scholorship, we should have at least 18. That leads to a lack of competition, as well as a depth issue.
I don’t care who we have for a running back, without an Oline they are mediocre looking at best. We sign the number one rated running back; how many number one rated Olinemen did we sign?

Shawn, I had to giggle at your post just a little. There is a bottom line that you failed to mention. That is that IF the pups could have beaten a mediocre S. Carolina team or beaten the East champ Tennessee, they might have gotten their chance, but they could not take care of business, which is a trait of a MR team. LSU was considerewd the better team, because they took care of business when they had to (SEC championship game). One more win, and Uga would have had their chance to prove they were worthy of playing for the NC. LSU took care of business, the poor pups did not, and that my friend is the bottom line.

A black eye is soon coming to us(SEC fans) regarding paying players and corrupt recruiting. The first hit we take is tonight at 10 on HBO. Then the investigations begin again at Auburn which will make us all look terrible. This is truly going to be the “summer of scandal in the SEC”. No way Mike Slive is SEC Commish by the time football season rolls around. It’s going to get ugly I’m afraid.

Ealy is done. This is the first step in setting up his “losers limp”. When fall practice starts, he will not be ready, he will be overweight and there will be a decision to have surgery to repair the hamstring. King will have every opportunity to win the job, but he runs like a guy looking for a soft place to fall down. Bobo never had a clue of how to use Knowshon, I don’t think he will figure out how to use Crowell. But we can always throw a 50 yard fly pattern on first down.

Mobile Dawg, when the freshmen report in the fall we will have 17 offensive linemen on scholarship. Three full lines +. There will be plenty of bodies to compete.

1eyedJack, I was quoting CMR verbatum when using that number. Obviously the last several years the combination of bodies (talent), numbers, or coaching to be successful hasn’t been there. I just wonder how, why, CMR could have been that detached, that’s where my frustration, dissatisfaction lie. We didn’t get in the position we’re in overnight, this has been progressive. If I see positive “results” from the “change” we’ve seen I will definitely acknowledge it. I’m not one to give support unilaterally when it’s been demonstrated first hand that it’s not warranted.

I’m doing well How2fish, how bout you? Any plans on coming down? We trolled the coastline for several hours while looking for ling. Spotted one. We caught as many Bonito as we wanted, good sport, a couple of Spanish, a slight buzz, and a lot of Sun.
I’m hearing the Snapper season may be lengthened a bit, along with raising the limit. Can’t catch much of anything else because of so many Snapper. The few triggers we did catch last year were huge.
You think the Dawgs are going to be much improved this year? Can they compete with USC, and Florida for the East?

I have been as critical of our O-line and specifically Coach Searles as anyone. Back when I was in the minority of folks concerned about it. But he certainly seemed like a great hire at the time. Nobody didn’t think he wasn’t going to be able to field a capable O-line.
But I do think we have recruited well at that position in the past few years, and I have a feeling that (even with Searles) we were going to see some of that starting to show up this year. As I said before, there is not a position coach in the league that has the opportunity to be a superhero as Will Friend right now. I think he fell into a very good situation.

I count we have 14 OL on the roster this spring. There are at least 8, still fairly young, in that that were very highly rated, with offers from most everybody. Just signed 6 more, also with multiple offers. I don’t think anyone has not been paying attention to the numbers.
No question the coaching at that position, for wha ever the reason, has not produced results. It seems that has been addressed. “corrected” is the question, but everything to do with that position has been changed.

I agree with you. UGA is a mid level “power” which is defiend by the many, many, many, many mid to UPPER level bowl games that we have been invited to. Trivial? Nope. Over the decades and I have been counting since 1960 ( UGA stomped Missouri in the 60 Orange Bowl and the many Sugar Bowls and Cotton Bowls and a couple of Gator Bowls and Cap One Bowls and Outback Bowls and Peach/Chic Fil A Bowls and yes, Weedeater and Music City and Liberty.
If this is so lousy …………….. why is UGA a close 4th in BOWL WINS behind PN State and the Real USC and Alabama in ALL TIME BOWL WINS ??? This stat says it all.
This perspecrtive is 100% accurate. NCs? Some schools like GT have not been to a Sugar Bowl in 55-58 years. Some schools like GT have not been to a Cotton Bowl in 55-65 years or Cap One Bowl ever. The same is true with about 94% of all big boy football schools. Some schools like GT have not won a bowl in a long time.
Read and weep.
Goooooooooooooooooo Dogs.
PS Auburn is in deep deep trouble …………….watch HBO tonight when tons of AU football players admit taking BRIBES to play at AU. Disgusting.

Boy the delusion for UGA fans is starting early this year, so by June this year the puppies will be winning the Super Bowl by default because the Steelers and Pats were too scared to play the mighty 6-7 juggernaut.
Last we saw this debacle, they were getting pushed around and unable to score against a Conference USA Central Florida but losing their only SEC caliber weapon in AJ Green is going to open up their awesomeness? Good luck with that.
Lets inject a little reality…UGAs offense is going to struggle more this year than last with no receivers and below average RBs. And a little told story to the Crowell fiasco is the complete lack of coverage that the kid is injury prone, he lost parts of or the entirety off several games this season due to injury. And that was against mid-level high school defenses, not a good boding for playing against SEC defenses.
6-7 is going to look like a “dream” season after 2011.
