Former UGA assistant reaches Final Four with VCU

A few notes to start the day:

  • A former Georgia assistant coach is headed to the Final Four. Mike Jones, a member of Dennis Felton’s UGA staff for six seasons, is an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth, which will play Butler in a wildly improbable national semifinal on Saturday. Jones was let go by Georgia, along with the rest of Felton’s assistants, when Mark Fox was hired in April 2009. Jones landed a position a couple of months later on the staff of then-new VCU coach Shaka Smart. Jones is a 17-year veteran coach who also has worked at  West Virginia, Richmond, Furman and Howard.
  • It won’t go down in the annals of famously effective motivational speeches, given the Georgia women’s basketball team’s 79-38 loss to Texas A&M in an NCAA tournament Sweet 16 game on Sunday. But if you want to listen, here’s a link at to Herschel Walker’s pregame speech to the Lady Bulldogs.
  • After winning two of three games last weekend over No. 9 LSU, Georgia’s baseball team plays another ranked team Tuesday night at No. 16 Clemson. It’ll be Georgia’s 15th game against a ranked opponent already this season. The Bulldogs are 11-13 overall, 6-8 vs. ranked teams.
  • Georgia will hold its annual spring clinic for high school coaches Thursday and Friday, but one scheduled speaker had to cancel: Hines Ward is tied up on “Dancing with the Stars.” Still scheduled to speak: Falcons coach Mike Smith and two former UGA stars, College Football Hall of Fame kicker Kevin Butler and six-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour.
  • Spring football practice continues Tuesday afternoon, with the first of this week’s four workouts. The Bulldogs also will be on the field Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Good to hear it that time of the year: coaches clinic is always good for some great quotes from high school coaches.

Congratulations Coach Jones, I guess you went to a college where your coaching talents could be used by the players to get the most out of their talent.

On his wiki page, it says Felton’s current position is assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets summer league team…I kid you not. I believe he also does scouting for the Nets.

Just goes to show that the beatdowns continue in our sports program. McGarity needs to clean house with the exception for Fox. Fire Landers, Fire Perno and Fire Richt.

Yep Andy Landers went out and shot .250 from the field and 3 for 12 from the free throw line against Texas A & M, you nitwit.

I love Herschel, but, I think that he should leave the motivational speeches to the coaches. Every time that he gives one, one of teams i.e the ladies roundball team the other night, and the football team a few years back against florida gets killed. Now that being said, if you could put Herschel’s heart and drive into these players, it would be a different story as he was a WARRIOR!!!!!!!!

Maybe Andy has gotten too old to coach or recruit very well, but his teams do get in the tourney almost every year. And that does speak well of his program. I don’t think McGarity has control over those activities as I do believe there is an AD for all womens sports. Now, when it comes to baseball, another story. Perno is not getting much out of his players or is not recruiting well. After their shot at the the CWS a few years ago, his teams have gone south, and that is not a good sign. Should have been able to build on that trip to the CWS. Did not even qualify for the SEC tourney last year!

Wow, y’all sound like Perno and the Dawgs were sweeped by LSU this weekend. Recruiting has hurt Perno the past couple of years. A few guys were drafted and thus signed instead of coming to college. One more thing. You have a couple of Freshman all americans and honrable mention freshman all sec who have done nothing since their freshman seasons. Baseball is a sport where you have it or you dont. A coach can teach you mechanics but mechanics do not help you hit a 90 mph fastball, talent does.

Andy Landers has built UGA’s women’s program from nothing to a top 10 national program for the last 20 years…. if not longer. One bad tournament loss and idiots call for his head. Being a solid program is not a right, it has to be earned and he has earned it and yet apparently isn’t appreciated by everyone for it. Who are you going to hire to replace him?

And Perno has earned at least another year from his past record.

You idiots can’t just jump ship at the sign of any adversity, I swear….

Anybody talking about firing Andy Landers is uneducated when it comes to basketball.

About "beatdowns"

March 29th, 2011

The Dogs are administering far more beatdowns than they are receiving if you are talking about UGA sports as a whole. In the last couple of weeks, Dogs baseball cleans house in LA, beating USC and UCLA among others, take two out of three from LSU, and Lady Dogs softball sweep the #2 ranked Lady Gators. As usual, the nation’s top men’s tennis program for the last 20 years or so, remain unbeaten in conference, as do the Lady Dogs perennial national power tennis team.

Shaka Smart most definitely was an assistant for Florida under Donovan.

@Reginald, I would not consider the Lady Dawgs a top ten team. Look at last several years. Tennessee pounds them every year. Its not even competitive any more.

Coach mark fox does not know how to coach in big games he chokes everytime with the plays that he calls! just look at his face when the games on the line he looks so dubious down the stretch…In another two years fan are going to want him gone watch! dont get me wrong he did help revive the program, but at the same time he cost uga alot of close games this year!

Wow..This is what Landers will give you. 19-10 record and sweet 16 every other year. If our goal is to be an occasional sweet 16 team then fine. Don’t give me we have been to final 4,that was many years ago. Sometimes a program needs new blood and now is the time, Andy has done as much as he can do and now we are at a ceiling with the program.
As far as Perno, tough call, but there are just too many good baseball coaches not to grab one of them after this year. Louisville coach should be main target or throw ton of dough at TCU coach.

Both women basketball and mens baseball should have new direction.
