Injuries end Georgia defensive end’s career
Georgia defensive end/linebacker Jeremy Longo, limited by shoulder and knee injuries the past two seasons, won’t play any more football.

Longo, a junior, will be medically disqualified “due to continuing injury issues,” UGA said Sunday.
Longo appeared in only seven games in the past two seasons, mostly on special teams –- three games in 2009 and four in 2010. He suffered a shoulder injury during spring practice 2009 and underwent knee surgery in January 2010.
Medically disqualified players remain on scholarship but do not count against the NCAA’s 85-scholarship limit.
Longo, who redshirted as a freshman in 2008, is from Fort Lauderdale. He was named to the SEC academic honor roll in 2009 and 2010 and to the SEC freshman academic honor roll in 2008.

Its so funny to me that you can tell how good a player is from the responses to his injury news….for instance when Aaron Murray was injured 20 guys in a row flooded this blog with responses like “OMG what are we gonna do?” or “NO Please tell me its not that bad” or “I hope he gets the best treatment ever, and nobody in Athens goes near him again”, and now we have this Longo kid who was probably the 60th best player on an 85 player team, only really played on special teams and garbage time with the 3rd unit and every comment is the same….the exact same…”Good luck Jeremy and get your degree. Best of Luck”. Im serious the phrase good luck jeremy is said 4 straight posts in a row. Monger- I weep for you. I am the father of this terrific football player and young man, Jeremy Longo. He gave his heart and soul to UGA football and loved every minute of it. I didnt want to bring this up, but he was born with a heart defect, and one of his heart valves had to be grafted using pig tissue. This combined with chronic tendenitis in his knees and it made it harder for him to get going than most kids his age. I bet you feel like a real loser and full of shame now that you know the truth about my son…Shame on you Monger…

Monger….big difference between a story of an injury and the end of a person’s ability to play a scholarship sport. When they get to go to a University on scholarship and still remain on scholarship after an injury that ends their career, I think maybe the fans of this young man hope that he finishes his academic career with the most valuable “brass ring” he can get – a degree. From the sounds of his academic prowess that this article professes, this young man has a future that is much more important than NFL stats. Since it was mentioned that JL made SEC academic honor roll every year, it sounds like he will be able to pursue a good education and career path outside of football. Just a shame though; I am sure that his heart is breaking to have to give up the sport he trained so hard for all of his life. I hope he stays healthy; I know he will succeed because it takes a hard core work ethic to become a scholarship student-athlete.

Bama announces this and it is Saban working the system. GA does it and Richt is the good guy doing what is right for the young man. It doesn’t matter if it is once or five times…is it right or not? What should matter is how the kid is treated. Are they being handled fairly? I tend to believe that both coaches are upfront and honest with the young men under their tutelage. That is how they have become such respected leaders.

First you oversign, then you make room. THUS the need. It doesnt make any sense when you already had scholarships available. And you don’t allocate 2 years carrying him on the roster first. Dummy.

I am glad to see CMR and the athletic department did the right thing for this young man, and I could give a hoot what Saban, Tech. or any other opposing coach would do or has done if presented with the same situation. Sorry the playing days are over but be proud you earned a place on the field. That is way more than most of us fans can brag about. Enjoy the rest of your time in Athens. It is a great place to go to school and have some fun when you don’t have to go to practice hours and hours a day. You got to be a Dawg. That is a pretty good start to life. I’m a dawg STH (just renewed) so I am not a ‘Bama fan, but if Saban did this for a young man, I understand. I hate ‘Bama on the field, but the fact is all these teams are playing under the NCAA’s rules and the NCAA watches things closely.
Whenever a kid has to give up a sport, due to injury or because they can’t make the next level, its hard. Its been years since I played, but I remember being forced to quit (next level) like it was yesterday. I am just glad UGA (with NCAA permission) is allowed to do the right thing and keep Mr. Longo on scholarship. To not be able to play, and to lose the scholarship as well, would be devastating. I am confident Mr. Longo will get support if he seeks it, and will be able to transition successfully to his new status.

I, like just about every athelete who ever played, ohh lets say 500 million just to be on the safe, had to hang up my baseball cleats after high school, after only getting a little attention from a few D2 and D3 schools, I decided to focus on academics and just “chillax”, I basked in Athens glory of wine, women, and song while occasionally hitting up an intermural softball tournament to fill the itch. I made it out alive and didnt need 500 hours of therapy like some of you girly boys think Jeremy needs. Save the candelight vigil and let Jeremy bask in the wine, women, and song of Athens nightlifes without having to look over his shoulder for an overbearing, uber-Christian coach looking over his shoulder.

First good luck Jeremy, hate that you had to give up being a college athlete so quick. Now to the next group who said it was to make room due to oversigning, obviously Bama or AU fans. Counting the 27 UGA signed in Feb, next August UGA would have had 84 kids on scholarship, 83 with the loss of Jeremy Longo now, 2 under the limit. Meanwhile Bama had 75 kids returning, signed 22 for a total of 97, 12 of which will either get a medical redshirt, on top of the 5 or so given last year, give up football and their scholarship, transfer or greyshirt. UGA is under the 85 limit with or without Jeremy, I do realize being a Bama fan that is hard for you to comprehend because most of you have never seen the inside of a classroom past 8th grade.

I started to say it’s funny but it’s just sad that some Alabama fan has come on here and is suppporting the unethical practice of Alabama and coach Saban of culling less talented players with bogus medical hardships and saying that UGA and Mark Richt are doing the same thing with Longo.
Not so Barney Strickland, You can bet it’s legit because Mark Richt would not come down to Sabans level. Check out your favorite authographed Saban picture for the one who is using that unethical practice.
The difference in the honesty and integrity between Mark Richt of UGA and Saban of Alabama is vast. Only a Alabama fan would make such a ignorant statement.
