Injuries end Georgia defensive end’s career

Georgia defensive end/linebacker Jeremy Longo, limited by shoulder and knee injuries the past two seasons, won’t play any more football.

Jeremy Longo

Jeremy Longo

Longo, a junior, will be medically disqualified “due to continuing injury issues,” UGA said Sunday.

Longo appeared in only seven games in the past two seasons, mostly on special teams –- three games in 2009 and four in 2010. He suffered a shoulder injury during spring practice 2009 and underwent knee surgery in January 2010.

Medically disqualified players remain on scholarship but do not count against the NCAA’s 85-scholarship limit.

Longo, who redshirted as a freshman in 2008,  is from Fort Lauderdale. He was named to the SEC academic honor roll in 2009 and 2010 and to the SEC freshman academic honor roll in 2008.

Best of Luck to this kid – his college career may not have been what he wanted in terms of playing time and injuries – but I am sure he will look back on the experience of being a part of an SEC program as one that was great!

More important – this kid is a good student and is preparing himself as to when life as an adult begins ……. after school and starting a career!

Best of luck!

Can’t believe so many of the negative posts here concerning Jeremy Longo. This kind of situation happens to a lot of teams every year. It just so happened it happened to the ‘Dog Nation. As a member of the ‘Dog Nation, I am also saddened to see JL’s career cut short. It doesn’t matter whether or not he played in 40 games or 2 games; he came to UGA because he loved the ‘Dogs! THAT’S what matters. How can you idiots NOT see this? Where were you when God passed out brains?

Clayton, the ones who post the drivel you refer to have little intelligence and even less class. They prove it when they post that kind of garbage and also prove that they are gutless enough to hide behind an anonymous screen name. They are best left alone and ignored.

I hate to see this happen to such a good kid. Good luck on finishing your degree.

Does this allow for UGA to bring another recruit for this year’s signing class?

Why does the AJC do a post blog on a story like this????? It’s unfair to Longo and his family. This is a disgrace to let trolls get on here and make vicious statements.

I demand AJC close this blog immediately!!!!!!!!!!!

What is up with our Lady Dawgs, really! That performance was pathetic! Coach Landers should step down or do something, the last two years I have seen Ga getting blown away too many times.

There will be even more room when King, Ealy or both get canned after Spring practice.

You have an issue with the paper reporting a fact that a kid is stepping down from the team but you have no problem erroneously claiming to have inside information that a couple of them were leaving early for the NFL the next day, when in fact you had no credible source for that?

Bama announces this and it is Saban working the system. GA does it and Richt is the good guy doing what is right for the young man. It doesn’t matter if it is once or five times…is it right or not? What should matter is how the kid is treated. Are they being handled fairly? I tend to believe that both coaches are upfront and honest with the young men under their tutelage. That is how they have become such respected leaders.

Why do you Ga people hate Tech and Bama? Tech only has about 30 fans and rarely wins, while you rarely play Bama. Florida beats your brains in for the last 20 years and not a peep from the fan base. You beat Vandy and you boast about it for the rest of the season. You are a weird bunch. I could go on and on, but you ought to get the point.

If Mark Richt is actually just using this to make room for somebody else, he must be the stupiest man alive. Coach, don’t play along when you don’t even understand how it works. First you oversign, then you make room. THUS the need. It doesnt make any sense when you already had scholarships available. And you don’t allocate 2 years carrying him on the roster first. Dummy.

Or it could be the kid is simply physically unable to play college football.

I think it is a shame that the idiots that come onto a blog, even concerning the misfortunes this young man encountered, have to be so vile, insensitive and just down right stupid. Some of these folks need to stay away from the hootch they drink since it obviously makes them think they are smart by posting all of this negative crap.
I am glad to see CMR and the athletic department did the right thing for this young man, and I could give a hoot what Saban, Tech. or any other opposing coach would do or has done if presented with the same situation. UGA did what was best for this young man and I wish him a bright future in life. He will succeed. Unfortunately, for some of the idiots that write all of this negative crap; You have condemned yourself to a pitiful existence of being a slight irritant and a large pain, in the lower extremities of most decent, and for sure, all, UGA fans.

The only good thing about the Medical is that the young man gets to keep his scholarship, I for one won’t yell too loud about because of that…the school still pays for the athlete’s education, and how many of you think Dr. Adams is going to OK that if there is not a viable injury situation?

Sorry the playing days are over but be proud you earned a place on the field. That is way more than most of us fans can brag about. Enjoy the rest of your time in Athens. It is a great place to go to school and have some fun when you don’t have to go to practice hours and hours a day. You got to be a Dawg. That is a pretty good start to life. Continue to go for your dreams. (unlike some of the dregs on this blog)

I’m a dawg STH (just renewed) so I am not a ‘Bama fan, but if Saban did this for a young man, I understand. I hate ‘Bama on the field, but the fact is all these teams are playing under the NCAA’s rules and the NCAA watches things closely.

Whenever a kid has to give up a sport, due to injury or because they can’t make the next level, its hard. Its been years since I played, but I remember being forced to quit (next level) like it was yesterday. I am just glad UGA (with NCAA permission) is allowed to do the right thing and keep Mr. Longo on scholarship. To not be able to play, and to lose the scholarship as well, would be devastating. I am confident Mr. Longo will get support if he seeks it, and will be able to transition successfully to his new status.

Good luck Jeremy. You’ve got one more drill to finish. DGD!

Other than a few idiot trolls on the blog, no one has ever accused CMR of oversigning. On the other hand Saban is in the NY Times and is the poster child for oversigning. Get a life you morons Bammers. Your coach is great and he stretches every rule on the books, just like the Old Bear did. It is what it is.

Really??? Come on y’all…..see this is the exact problem that is wrong with American Society as a whole today, all laid out perfectly in these blog comments…You guys treat these grown 20 year old men like little girls, and judging by some of y’alls comments you probably cried about this news more than jeremy did. I mean there are just too many sissy men in the world today, that go on to be 20, 30, 40 year old men with the souls of 13 year old girls…”Ohh this is so tragic”, ” Omg I pray for his family in this tough time”, give me a break, this is hilarious material from you clowns. Look I dont doubt one bit he loved playing football, especially for UGA, but to act like this is a death of a loved one or a terrible accident, or something that changes earths civilazation is hilarious to me. He probably felt bad for a couple hours, then went and drank at one of Athens lovely bars, chatted with one of Athens loveliest little baby-doll blondes, and drove around in the beutiful city in his lovely car, all while being young, in good health (other than those knees), and getting a free ride to finish his studies at a top 50 public university, give me a break. I, like just about every athelete who ever played, ohh lets say 500 million just to be on the safe, had to hang up my baseball cleats after high school, after only getting a little attention from a few D2 and D3 schools, I decided to focus on academics and just “chillax”, I basked in Athens glory of wine, women, and song while occasionally hitting up an intermural softball tournament to fill the itch. I made it out alive and didnt need 500 hours of therapy like some of you girly boys think Jeremy needs. Save the candelight vigil and let Jeremy bask in the wine, women, and song of Athens nightlifes without having to look over his shoulder for an overbearing, uber-Christian coach looking over his shoulder.

First good luck Jeremy, hate that you had to give up being a college athlete so quick. Now to the next group who said it was to make room due to oversigning, obviously Bama or AU fans. Counting the 27 UGA signed in Feb, next August UGA would have had 84 kids on scholarship, 83 with the loss of Jeremy Longo now, 2 under the limit. Meanwhile Bama had 75 kids returning, signed 22 for a total of 97, 12 of which will either get a medical redshirt, on top of the 5 or so given last year, give up football and their scholarship, transfer or greyshirt. UGA is under the 85 limit with or without Jeremy, I do realize being a Bama fan that is hard for you to comprehend because most of you have never seen the inside of a classroom past 8th grade.

Monger, the posters on this blog are only trying to express gratitude and best wishes to a DGD who can no longer play football. That’s it. No more, no less. It must be frustrating for you to always be on the outside looking in, longing to be accepted by the cool crowd and knowing all the while that ain’t no way in hell that it will ever happen.

I started to say it’s funny but it’s just sad that some Alabama fan has come on here and is suppporting the unethical practice of Alabama and coach Saban of culling less talented players with bogus medical hardships and saying that UGA and Mark Richt are doing the same thing with Longo.

Not so Barney Strickland, You can bet it’s legit because Mark Richt would not come down to Sabans level. Check out your favorite authographed Saban picture for the one who is using that unethical practice.

The difference in the honesty and integrity between Mark Richt of UGA and Saban of Alabama is vast. Only a Alabama fan would make such a ignorant statement.

Best of luck in your future, Jeremy. Once a Dawg always a Dawg.
