UGA’s Ben Jones honors his late father with change of numbers

ATHENS – Ben Jones, the Georgia football team’s starting center for the past three years, will wear a different jersey number for his senior season –- a long-planned tribute to his late father.

Ben Jones

Ben Jones

Jones is switching from No. 61 to No. 60, which was worn by his father, Steve Jones, as a high school player in South Georgia.

“My dad passed away when I was 10 … in a helicopter crash at work [as a forester],” Jones said Saturday. “He was a Georgia fan; he was the one that got me to watching Georgia; he actually graduated from Georgia with a forestry degree. . . . There’s no better year to wear No. 60 to honor my dad than my senior year here at Georgia, his favorite school and my favorite school.”

Jones said he wore No. 60 “all the way through since I was 10 years old” until he arrived at Georgia in 2008 and found the number unavailable because it belonged to fellow offensive lineman Clint Boling, who was one year ahead of Jones.

“I said, ‘I’ll just wait until [Boling] is gone to get No. 60,’” Jones said. “So I’ve had this planned since I’ve been here. I was waiting to stay my senior year and wear No. 60 in honor of my dad.”

Boling completed his eligibility last season and is preparing for the NFL draft.

Jones’ strong desire to wear No. 60 at Georgia, he said, is one reason he didn’t seriously consider entering this year’s draft as a junior.

Although he grew up in Alabama, Jones said he always was a UGA fan because of his father’s influence.

Ben Jones is easily one of the best centers in the country and one of the top 2-3 centers in the SEC and should be drafted early during the draft in 2012. He’s a hard worker and has been a starter since the 4th game of his freshman season against Arizona State. He’s a great player and I wish him the best of luck this season and hope for the best. Go Dawgs!

Ben Jones and William Vlachos (Alabama) are the top two centers in the SEC with Ryan Pugh from Auburn gone. Jones is an All-SEC type center. He is a 2nd round pick to me right now and with a great season this season, he could slide into that late 1st round pick talk.

Why would doubt? Because I think we have a dirty player, but we find no problem calling out other teams? I was upset at the Fairley hits, but that didn’t make it ok for Jones to jump him and punch him either.

Comparing Ben Jones to Nick Fairley is like comparing Dirty Harry to Al Capone. Ben Jones is not a dirty player.

Very classy @DUMBO. You make Dawg fans look bad just like other teams fans say. Didn’t your mother or father tell you 2 wrongs don’t make a right?
Jones wasn’t standing up for hits on Murray when he went after the Miss State’s players knees from behind. No I don’t think so.

You have seen me on here. I an no Auburn Fan. I also don’t have a problem calling out our team, coaches, or players either. What Auburn fans let Fairley get away with or support that is their problem. My problem is when OUR team does crap like Jones did last year in some games.

Delta Stewardess is an Auburn fan. She’s been on here before so we don’t care what you say about Ben Jones. They should have been dirtier to Fairley and put him out. You get what you give. Fairley started that game and many more before that one playing dirty. It was about time he got his.

@Kerryb don’t you remember UGA got the first penalty of the Auburn game. It was a 15yrd Personal Foul. We came out trying to play very physical and dominate Auburn. Fairley was not stopped by any team in the country.
It is good that Ben and his father will both be UGA Graduates. Sorry about his father passing.

C’mon guys! The kid is making a tribute to his dad! Show a little class. Just where does Fairley, Auburn, Bama, or anything else fit in this picture. The best way to shut up fools is to ignore them, not continue to bait them.

Those of us blessed to have lived our lives with our dads there to support us through good times and bad shouyld step back, count our blessings, show some respect for a fine, hard working young man.

@samm
I like the Delta Dawn by Tanya Tucker over Helen Reddy.
I am pretty sure Ben plays on a Flat or Slightly Curved Field not in a Trench. I never said that he doesn’t play to win. I just said he plays dirty. I am pretty sure all players play to WIN. I also said if Fairley was on our team, we would defend him just like people are Ben Jones. I don’t understand how we can defend or condemn one player over another when they do the same things. I believe that is called Hypocritical.

Leave it to a Knuckle-dragging Awbern fan to make an issue of Ben Jones . Evidently , Delta stewerdess is probably Cam Newton’s lawyer . Incidently , I’m sure that when Fairly ends up in prison , as he surely will , with the character he displays , one of his cellmates will surely introduce him to ………. which he so richly deserves
