Spring break is over at UGA. Classes resumed Monday. Football practice resumes Tuesday.
The Bulldogs, you might recall, opened spring football practice on March 10, holding one of their NCAA-allotted 15 practices before dispersing for the university’s spring break. Twelve days later, practice No. 2 is scheduled for late Tuesday afternoon, and spring ball begins in earnest now. The team will practice three or four times per week through the G-Day game on April 16.
Things will be hopping around the Butts-Mehre building Tuesday. The activity starts at mid-morning with Georgia’s “Pro Day” — 14 players from last season’s team working out for NFL scouts in the weight room and on the practice field. And about the time the current Bulldogs are wrapping up football practice this evening, the Georgia and Georgia Tech baseball teams will be playing across the street at Foley Field.
Speaking of the baseball game: It starts at 7:06 p.m. and will be televised on CSS; it will be Georgia’s first home game since March 6. The Bulldogs (9-11 overall) have played their past nine games in seven different stadiums from California to South Carolina, going 6-3 in that stretch. The game against Tech will be Georgia’s 11th so far this season against a ranked opponent.
Pro Day and football practice are closed to the public, per usual. But the Pro Day workouts will be shown online. ESPN3.com will have live streaming coverage beginning at 10 a.m. at http://espn.go.com/espn3/index?id=162227
More later in the day …

I read an article in another paper saying that BoBo wants “competition at every position, on both sides of the ball”. This is refreshing news if they will commit to it. Chris Conley may prove to be a force at receiver, a position where there may be more competition than any other on the field. The article said BoBo also told Boo Malcolme that he would not be forgotten, what with the splash Crowell made. I have seen real fire in Ealey at times, none more than the 2009 Tech game, and if he gets serious and produces at that level then the Dawgs running game will be great again. The OL will finally become the force that it was expected to be the last couple of years. The turn around in the running game will relieve pressure from Murray and the receivers, and the play action will again be successful.
I know there will be a heap of folks on here talking about BoBo’s play calling, but Coach Richt will oversee this again this year. Don’t think for a minute that Richt did not here what was said about UGA’s offense being the easiest to prepare for.
The defense WILL be better. Grantham has a lot of talent to work with in his second year, and the exit of a couple of bad seed players will only help this situation. The Dawgs will be back up in the top third in all defensive stats this year, and with an improved running game the Dawgs will again be of the Junkyard mentality.

Me thinks Meyer left because another year like the one he just had, leaving would NOT be HIS choice. as for perno, yes, i believe uga’s got a big problem in the baseball program. it’s called feast or famine. there’s no reason why uga can’t have a decent baseball team year in and year out. clemson does it, tech does it. i hear that perno can recruit like gangbusters, then i see the most pitiful team in the sec last year. tough scheduling? what the hell good does that do when you can’t win any of the series? baylor, fsu….hell we got swept by stetson! i hope mcgarity brings a higher level of expectation to uga in some of these grossly underachieving programs.

Due to Richt’s entitlement policy, takes all the uncertainty out of Spring for fans, and worse, for players. No need to fight it out over Spring, here’s your starters: Murray, Crowell, Tavarres and Brown. After watching Richt for years over Spring, this is how it will end up. What about great Spring’s by Lemay, Ealey, Bennett, Conley, Wooten? Won’t matter. Remember last year? Mettenberger kicked Murray’s tail up one side of the field and down another only for Richt to name Murray the starter, before Mettenberger left the team.
Could this be why the offense averaged 10th in SEC scoring against winning teams? Yes. Georgia had better talent on the field, but they didn’t get a chance.

Transfers are indicators of entitlement policies and coaches that play favorties and discourage real ocmpetiiton. Look for transfers before the Fall at QB and TE, as these are both positions with depth, where entitlement usually reigns.
Sam
March 22nd, 2011
9:09 am
Transfers are the main story now, since Richt dislikes competition. You wonder who will transfer this year? It’s been 2 Elite 11 QB’s over past 2 seasons. An RB and LB also transferred. Looking at Lemay, Mason, Ealey, White, Malcome.
Thom

9:11 am
Yes, Ealey will transfer, 99.9% chance, he’s waiting to see if he’ll be given a chance, but once he sees Richt’s true colors, he’ll be gone.
Remember, you’re talking about an INEPT offense that only scored 18 points a game in 2010 against winning teams, 10th in the SEC. They could use some competition, but it’s not going to change.

Georgia ranked #84 in offensive scoring against teams with winning records in 2010. Remember the games against South Carolina & UCF? Offense didn’t score.

South Carolina averaged 32 points a game against winning teams. And Spurrier makes his players compete, even at QB. He’ll bench you if you don’t perform. And so you know you need to bring it.
Not Richt. Murray got a pass for 4 to’s against Florida, 3 against UCF. Starting out 1-4 record.
Richt didn’t bench Joe Cox either after 17 interceptions.
Sam
March 22nd, 2011
9:22 am
Thom,
When you have 2 QB’s of Elite 11 calibre transferring, 2 years in a row, Gray & Mettenberger, that’s not a good sign that Richt treats players fairly.
Gray said he left because he wanted to play in Miss. We all knew that wasn’t why Gray left. Now we find out Gray will likely play for Colorado next season. Gray left because he felt Richt gifted the starting position to Aaron Murray, which Murray didn’t earn over the Spring. And Richt stayed with Murray, even when 99% of coaches would have benched the QB.

Mr Bobo, the problem with your running game hasn’t been the particular athlete running the ball, but an offensive line that routinely gets stuffed by 8 or 9 in the box, because of the predictability of your play-calling.
Other than a couple of costly fumbles each, King and Ealey are good enough college RBs. Get your scheming up to speed, first, or Boo nor Crowell will make a difference.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

I mean, what, 11 td’s, on less than 150 carries? Only 3 backs in the country did that.
Ealey ran for 8000 yards and 130+ td’s in high school, he’s been a phenom of productivity there, and at Georgia. Beating Herschel’s numbers both places.

Yes, DunceCap, it can get worse. It’s gotten worse every year since 2007 ok? You go form 11 wins in 07′, to 10 in 08′, to 8 in 09, to 6 in 10′, yes, DunceCap, it can get worse. It usually does with Mark Richt. There’s a very, very, very, good chance, almost 90%, it will get worse.

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.
Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.
Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And don’t forget the Red Panties.
There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.

“9th rated offensive line class” in the SEC by Rivals, just ahead of Miss. State and Vanderbilt! Last year you lost Boling , Chris Davis, Josh Davis and Tanner Strickland. This year you lose Sturdivant, Glenn, Jones, and Anderson, and you can’t land offensive tackles Jessamen Dunker, 6′6″ 315, (Fla.)or Cedar Grove’s Brandon Greene, 6′6′ 300 lb.(Alabama) because Bobo’s in love with John Theus. Richt needs to stop listening to the guy. Hell the only reason Figgins is a fullback is because Ben Jones CAN’T BLOCK!

tide roll,
Figgins is a FB because we are low on fullbacks, we have more than enough tight ends, and he is a good candidate. I agree Ben Jones needs help blocking, but don’t make that the prime motivating factor behind the switch. The depth chart dictates it regardless of Jones’ blocking ability.

BTW, Goff’s years and Donnan were closer to Hades for me than anything Richt has done. We know that Richt can win because he has in the past. Regardless we need to support the kids and the guy leading them this year because he isn’t going anywhere. If he doesn’t pull down a lot of wins and a bowl game win this year he knows what will happen.
I have to get home before the snow hits. Everybody have a nice and warm evening for me.

Ah, so this morning when you were derogatory toward Murray, that was just your way of expressing concern about Coach Bobo’s adjustments? I don’t know how I could have mistaken that. “in the reggie Ball world” is so clearly a dig at his coach.

Bobo and CMR really don’t want competition, LeMay could out-perform Murray but he will still start. CMR believes in running back by committee, not giving one RB a chance for 20 or more carries. Why does it take so long for a QB to jell into the “Georgia offensive system”, but Newton can win a BCSC with one year at Auburn? Why is this “vaulted system so hard to learn by a QB, but I can guess the offensive plays after watching 1 quarter?

With all the “misery” and “lousiness” and “CMR failures” UGA, is over the last 10+ years one of ther winningest college programs in football.
UGA over many, MANY, MANY years that include Donnan, Goff and CMR and Dooley and Butts, is the # 4 ALL TIME WINNING BOWL team behind # 1 Alabama and the REAL USC and Penn State. UGA was one game ( Liberty Bowl did it ) behind # 3 PN State.
Haters …………….. let this excellent record give you some heart burn. AAAHAHAHHAHAHA

We “want that NC trophy”?? Really? Are you serious???
Folks ………….. you do not go to college for a NC. That peculiar status IS coveted and greatly admired by uneducated fools that worship at the feet of the Scam Newtons and Ray Lewis scum of to the world. A NC is not any indicator of whether one has attended a great school and ends up with a career. NC’s are really for kids. Nice, they are; no doubt about it, but the NC is not a barometer of whether a school is wonderful.
I went to UGA in 196,7 so as to learn and eventually go into a field. I did that and retired at age 56 with only one NC in my UGA era. My experience is fabulous and if UGA had 10 NCs, it would not have allowed me to retire any sooner. See? College is about a career and stuff that matters. College is about FOREVER !!
Go Dogs.

A vaulted system needs a combination lock. THAT is why our QB’s take years to develop, you ninny!!
Now, a vaunted system only takes one week. Maybe ditch the steel and pad locks and go with vaunted?

I think Tech Tied UNC in 90. Colorado has 2 ties and a 5th down win. Any TECH fans reading please correct me if I have that wrong. 1990 was a great year for the Nerds. Their football team played and won a National Championship and the Basketball team was in the Final Four with Duke and UNLV. I don’t remember the other team. Tech lost close with the 3 point shooters and Duke was blown out by UNLV by like 20.The NATS fans had a great year that year and we can’t take that away. I want to not be looking up at UF, UF and hoping we are better than USC and UK. We deserve better. We have the money and pull to beat Bama, LSU, and the heated GATORS for a shot at the National Title. 10 wins a year with 3 weak OOC games Vandy and Kentucky do not a good season make.

Two Athens-Clarke County police officers were wounded Tuesday afternoon when a suspect fired on them, according to Athens police, and news outlets were reporting one of the officers died.
What has happened to OUR nice town. I miss the 40 Watt with the B-52’s , REM, Drivin ‘n Cryn, and the Dixie Dregs. There was a real Local band I think was called the MUD FLAPS. Is that right? They had a guy that played the Washboard, Cowbell, and the Mouth Harp.

I hope the DREAM TEAM is not like a Big budget Hollywood Movie. PAY(not really) Play a bunch of STARS and the Movie/FOOTBALL team still flops. McGarity please get us to WIN, but drop the JOKE teams for home games that cost me about $400/gm/ticket for the DONATION and Tickets. That doesn’t even factor in Fuel and Tailgating costs.

I’ve had less interested in our Spring’s each season Richt’s been here. I guess since we already know who’ll be starting at each position, since Richt announced Murray & Crowell as starters, it’s kind of boring going through the whole Spring charade. I guess if you’re a real naiive person, you might enjoy it.

Brandon,
You don’t think we can beat Ole Mississippi? Come on now. Easy win. I think we’ll take the Jackets 7 Vols too, 6-6, no way 4-8, true, Jackets & Vols are not gimmes, but I don’t see us losing those 2 games.

Yep, we’ll beat Ole Miss, forgot about them, but not Tech or Kentucky. We’ll steal one from Tennessee, but it will come down to the wire, their program is equal to ours right now. So, ok, 5-7. Best case, that’s it. No way we win more. No way.

We beat BSU and get HIGH then the GameChickens bring down the Curtain on Rich’ts career in Athens. We get a break to get our feet against Costal Carolina and Ole Miss Bears(rebel mascot) before the REAL Bulldogs(no white painted needed) come to town. STRONG will bring the ATTITUDE. What will BOBO have to counter with? Tenn, Vandy and the Gators on the ROAD. we come home to play new Mexico St? I can’t see paying money for the games at Sanford. If we are 4-2 heading to play the GATORS I might think if we win that game we can win the SEC east and play in the DOME. After the Gators we have 3 home games and the Nerds in Atlanta.

What’s up fellas? Let’s see if the boys can finally do it this year, “The Georgia Way”, and get less wins than last year, like Richt has 7 times out of last 8 seasons.
The Georgia Way = Win less games than year before 7 out of 8 seasons

first 2 games will tell the story of our season. We start 2-0, look for 12 or 13 wins and an SEC title. We start 1-1, expect a solid year with 9 or 10 wins. We start 0-2, then expect another long year. Even if we start 0-2, the schedule is easy and .500 is likely

Yea, what’s the big deal. Young lady at a public bar, fending off a kid who is trying to fondle her to the point that the bouncers have to escort him out to the parking lot, where he causes such a scene that the cops get involved, happens all the time. Thats normal.
