UGA resumes spring football practice — for real this time

Spring break is over at UGA. Classes resumed Monday. Football practice resumes Tuesday.

The Bulldogs, you might recall, opened spring football practice on March 10, holding one of their NCAA-allotted 15 practices before dispersing for the university’s spring break.  Twelve days later, practice No. 2 is scheduled for late Tuesday afternoon, and spring ball begins in earnest now. The team will practice three or four times per week through the G-Day game on April 16.

Things will be hopping around the Butts-Mehre building Tuesday.  The activity starts at mid-morning with Georgia’s “Pro Day” — 14 players from last season’s team working out for NFL scouts in the weight room and on the practice field. And about the time the current Bulldogs are wrapping up football practice this evening, the Georgia and Georgia Tech baseball teams will be playing across the street at Foley Field.

Speaking of the baseball game: It starts at 7:06 p.m. and will be televised on CSS; it will be Georgia’s first home game since March 6. The Bulldogs (9-11 overall) have played their past nine games in seven different stadiums from California to South Carolina, going 6-3 in that stretch. The game against Tech will be Georgia’s 11th so far this season against a ranked opponent.

Pro Day and football practice are closed to the public, per usual. But the Pro Day workouts will be shown online.  ESPN3.com will have live streaming coverage beginning at 10 a.m. at http://espn.go.com/espn3/index?id=162227

More later in the day …

Ealey averaged the same td per carry ratio as Herschel Walker (1 per 20 carries), and has a better ypc average than Herschel Walker (5.5 ypc vs. 5.3 for Walker), but it doesn’t matter to Richt. Ealey got rotated with King, Thomas, and even Murray got 6 carries a game.

Richt started Joe Terishinki at QB instead of Matthew Stafford. Hard to believe this kind of non sense goes on.

Do the players and/or The NFL pay rent to the university for the use of the practice field. If not, why not?

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Mettenberger threw for 150 yards and 2 td’s last G-Day on 10 passes. Gray did well too.

Murray stunk, as usual. 10 for 22, 0 td’s, 2 int’s.

Sam,

it’s pretty amazing, the whole way Richt’s shunned Washaun Ealey, mind boggling, given Ealey’s incredible productivity.

I mean, what, 11 td’s, on less than 150 carries? Only 3 backs in the country did that.

Ealey ran for 8000 yards and 130+ td’s in high school, he’s been a phenom of productivity there, and at Georgia. Beating Herschel’s numbers both places.

Sam,

Are you really that stupid? You said Mettenberger performance last year didn’t get rewarded. I guess you didn’t hear that he was arrested and kicked off the team shortly after Spring practice.

Thom,

The favoritism at Georgia is an epidemic. It’s so sad to see richt be so unfair to Mettenberger, Gray, Tavarres, and Ealey. They outperformed the competition, yet Richt stayed with his favorites.

That’s why you go 6 & 7.

Ealey scored 11 td’s versus Caleb King’s 2 td’s in 2010. Ealey simply CRUSHED the competition.

Yet Richt kept rotating Caleb King in.

Sad, really sad.

Sam-

I’ll tell you something pretty hard ot believe.

Georgia has yet to LOSE a football game when Washaun Ealey gets 25 carries.

Isn’t that amazing?

Anytime Richt’s put the game in Ealey’s hands, 100%, Georgia wins the game.

2011 is a rebuilding year for my beloved Dawgs I’m afraid. I hope fans will be cautiously optimistic and that’s it. Anytime you struggle against Vandy, UK and UCF things are not too good and will not change overnight. I hope I’m wrong but USCe and UF are going to be better this fall.

The biggest change that CMR needs to make is to stop recruiting the low-class illiterates and thugs who he seems to think will win for him and keep his oversized paychecks coming in. People like Marcus Dowtin, A.J. Green, Washaun Ealey, Caleb King, and others too numerous to mention are not team players, they’re thug wannabes who are much closer to a gang than a team.

It’s sickening to see felons and goons like these representing the state’s flagship university.

Hopefully Murray will go to church, memorize more Bible verses, and pray more this year. Whatever Murray did, didn’t help last year, went 0-6 against winning teams. God seemed to shine his favor on any winning team Murray played against.

Our problems are obvious:

Some people try to find things in this game that don’t exist but football is only two things – blocking and tackling.

Coach Vince Lombardi

We can’t do either, especially in the 4th quarter. I hope that I am wrong, but I don’t see why it will be any different this year.

Anybody got stats on the defense for yards allowed after first contact. I would be willing to bet that ours correlate directly to our position in the SEC this past year.

Richt loses less games than the year before,

7 out of 8 of the last seasons.

88% of the time, Richt’s seasons get worse than the year before.

Looking at a 5-7 season.

88% chance.

I heard A Murray just threw a TD pass to win the game. Problem is he did it against a Defense that could not stop a team with a winning record. This DREAM TEAM better be something special of Richt, Bobo, and Grantham are gone. Rightly so.
Please return your seats to the upright position and fasten your seatbelt. Thank You.

For you optmist, in reviewing the last 8 seasons, richt got more wins than they year before 1x, so,

you have a 12% chance of winning 7 or more games in 2011.
