Gator chomps and Bulldog barks followed Richt on spring break

ATHENS – Georgia’s football team switched gears from spring break to spring practice Tuesday — a rather jolting change.

Just back from the university’s spring break, which many players and coaches spent on the beach, the Bulldogs returned to the practice field on an unseasonably warm afternoon. They held their second session of spring practice, 12 days after the first.

“Spring break — for spring football, it really does stink,” coach Mark Richt said. “You get ‘em working; you get ‘em up to a certain point of readiness, mentally, physically. And then boom, they’re gone. . . . And we [coaches] are, too. Our minds — we’re out of here, too.

“It’s hard to just come back off spring break and just expect everybody to look great. But hopefully we’ll be locked in and ready to go from here on.”

Richt spent part of his spring break on the beach in Jamaica, and listen to what greeted him there:

“I’m not lying to you: The first time we laid down our stake at the beach — laid it down just barely, hadn’t even sat down yet, just trying to get the chair aligned with the sun — two Gators [fans] are right [next] to where my chair was, right where I was looking.”

He had other encounters with SEC fans on the trip, too.

“I’ll tell you what, man: The SEC is everywhere,” he said.

“I got a couple of these,” he added, showing the Gator chomp. “But I had a lot of great Bulldogs barking, too, so it was good.”

Anyway, a rested Richt and his team were back at work Tuesday.

“I thought we were a little sluggish,” Richt said. “I hate to make it sound like it was a bad [practice] because it really wasn’t, but I don’t think everybody did a real good job over spring break staying in shape.”

The Bulldogs will practice again on Thursday.

Bare-handed Murray

If you’re wondering, quarterback Aaron Murray practiced without gloves Tuesday.

He wore them in Georgia’s 10-6 Liberty Bowl loss to Central Florida, a choice that drew much debate after the game.

“Yeah, I definitely heard a lot of second-guessing,” Murray said Tuesday. “But when you go back and watch the film, most of the bad plays were not due to throwing. It was more mental errors. So it had nothing to do with the glove.”

In any case, Murray said he doesn’t plan to wear a glove on his throwing hand during games or practices in the future unless cold weather possibly dictates.

“I felt good with it heading into the [bowl] game, with the weather and everything,” he said. “But as of right now we’re just using the hand.”

Murray participated fully in Tuesday’s practice, and he said his ankle, which he sprained in a pickup soccer game last month, “feels 100 percent.”

“I’m still doing rehab just to make sure it stays strong,” he said. “But I felt great out there today and really haven’t had any problems in about a week or so.”

Benedict’s long road back

Offensive lineman Brent Benedict, who was redshirted as a freshman last season after suffering a severe knee injury in high school, said he is a “full-go” participant this spring.

“It was a long road coming back,” he said.

He is working at right guard.

Donations rise

Donations to the Georgia athletics program have topped last year’s level despite the Bulldogs’ first losing football season in 14 years.

Contributions to the “Hartman Fund,” the fund-raising vehicle that is tied to football season tickets, stood at $22.94 million as of Monday night with “still a few dribbling in,” according to Dave Muia, the athletics department official who oversees fund-raising and alumni relations.

That total exceeds last year’s contributions of $22.74 million.

This year’s stated deadline for contributions was Feb. 15, but the cutoff, as usual, was flexible.

Tim,

Based on the comments from the players and Richt himself, can you elaborate on to why they even bother having the one single practice before spring break? What is the point of it? If everyone checks out mentally and physically after the one practice, I don’t see what the benefit is of it. Maybe there is some obscure technical reason they are doing it in regards to meeting times or something, but I’m just curious because it sounds as if it was almost a wasted day based on the comments.

As an Auburn Man and as an Auburn University graduate, let me offer, to those who care to learn, the proper Latin designations regarding University Graduates……a male student graduating from a College or University is considered an “Alumnus”…..it is considered “singular” or as a single Graduate. In other words the proper statement would be,” I am an alumnus of Auburn University or I am an alumnus of UGA.” Too often I read on these blogs, for example, “I am an Alumni of UGA or GA. TECH”. The word “Alumni” refers to 2 or more graduates from a single College or University. The proper use of “Alumni” would be that “my friend Bill and I are Alumni of Auburn or UGA” In short, the word “Alumni” represents 2 or more and is plural. Again, the singular is “I am an alumnus of AU, UGA, BAMA.”…..My friends and I are ALUMNI…..which is plural….2 or more.
Well, we did win the National Championship this year and hopefully will win the proper grammar lessons when speaking of our “ALUMNI”……..War Eagle!!!

Mark Richrt has a sense of humor which is required in his profession in order to keep his sanity. Hopefully, he enjoyed his time in Jamaica.

I also love the fact that a lot of Gator Haters seem to think UF will return to the lackluster form of the 70s and 80s. It is good that they do not carry a bull’s eye this year.
The UF-UGA Game in Jax should be a good one this year. If the Gators beat the Dawgs this year, will UGA take Muschamps name of the list of UGA graduates and former players? Hopefully he is mentally tough because he is going to catch a lot of flack regardless of who wins.

Having said that, I am very happy that Will Muschamp is the Gator Coach even though he is also a Dawg. Go Gators!

Red Pantalones

March 23rd, 2011
8:49 am

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking a few years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance. And red panties.

Heres losses for @ Larry Bird.

UF
Boise State
Miss State
USC
Auburn

Hmmm, Even if you win 2 of those games its only a 9 win season. UGA will not win 3 of those 5 games, so 3 losses there is a given.

Lets look at some of the power houses UGA will play in 2011.
Coastal Carolina
New Mexico State
GA Yech
Vanderbilt

So thats 4 wins against highly inferior opponents – That is a 6-3 record.

The other 4 games are a toss up.
Kentucky
Tenn – at Tenn
at Ole Miss

Win all 3 thats a 9-3 season.

Lose 2 thats a 7-5 Season.

given the CEO’s propensity for inconsistent play on any given week UGA could win 9 at best and lose 6 at worst.

Nope, 10+ wins cannot be put in any bank this year.

I say 7 wins and the CEO and his buddies are HISTORY at UGA. And thats what will happen, 7 wins.

The stupidity of the Bulldog Nation in their love fetish with that loser Mark Richt is the only thing keeping UGA from breaking into the USN&WR’s top ten public universities. It’s got to make you wonder about the quality of education that our graduates demonstrate, not to mention sound judgement. Seems like the entire state of Georgia has gone dumb over the past few years, from being an economic juggernaut to a basket case.
JB, when the UGA leadership finally fires Richt, and they will, he will not need a job in the ACC. By that time, he will have piled away tens of millions of UGA dollars @ $3M per year plus perks to buy the city of Athens, if not the entire State of Georgia. This is how stupid the Bulldog Nation seems to be in 2011. He won’t ever have to work.

Not this year though, he’s gonna be yelling, breaking stuff, punching lockers. It will be savage. No mercy will be shown to our opponents. I’m willing to bet a couple of teams will just give up and not come out after halftime. I can not wait. Remember how UGA would be up 28-3 at the half, then the opponent would make the game 28-20 in the 3rd quarter, UGA would go on to win 35-23, or something like that? We all sat around saying, “Well the CEO didn’t want to run up the score on the other team.” We made excuses for the soft play at times of his teams. They would go to sleep. We’ve all seen it a million times now.

How long have you been a UGA fan? Were you around for Dooley’s last years? Were you around for Goff?

Won with Donnan’s players-yes he did. More than Donnan did. Way more. Victim of his own success?

Was the 2005 team Donnan’s players? DJ doesn’t get hurt, we beat Florida and Auburn and don’t have to play WV and get a different matchup and play for the title and maybe win it like Florida lucked up in 2006? Was that team soft?

Was the 2007 team recruited by Donnan?

The once rated #1 QB. Wow, let’s try and look at the positive in some of this. Dogging the team and coach in spring pratice doesn’t help anybody. Everybody knows that results and not excuses are what counts this year. I am as disappointed as anybody of the results from last year. Our offense was pathetic when it counted. And yes he did win one his first year – it was a fluke! Of course ACC championships are nothing compared to SEC championships and National Championships.

March 23rd, 2011
11:09 am

Counting two coaches ( JD and CMR) UGA is STILL one of the top 10 or 12 or so teams in w/l over the last few years.

Also, UGa is only 4th by one game to PN State in being #3 all time bowl winner. That breaks down like this:
Alabama is #1
the REAL USC is #2
PN State is # 3
UGA is 4th ALL TIME >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ALL TIME BOWL winner. CMR has had alot to do with UGA’s w/l record in bowls. Take GT as only one example, CPJ has 0 wins. Folks that means Nada IN BOWLS. ZILCH, GOOSE EGGS.

Sorry to be so negative. I’m just frustrated at CMR and CMB. I want them so badly to turn things around I just don’t know if it’s possible at this point. Regarding recruiting I was speaking about the 2012 class. UF has 6 commitments many of them from GA and Bama has 12. Many of them from GA as well. The 2011 class was awesome and I took my hat off to them on this blog many, many times. Although it is very early we usually have more commitments than the present 1 or 2.

I really think the defense is going to be solid and in fact could be one of the SEC’s best. Jones and Ogletree are studs. I just look at that group of receivers and offensive lineman it it’s scary. How are we going to score against USCe?

Regarding the 1 practice then spring break. I think we are only allowed a certain # of practices in the spring. I don’t know when the spring game is supposed to be played but I would imagine you have some days off. Maybe he had the one practice to run the guys and let them know that if anybody gets in trouble during spring break or does anything stupid you are off the team. IF that was the only thing he did then it appeared to have worked. No problems or arrest that we are currently aware of. After last year I would spend 1 practice on that alone.

I agree on with you on the “studying football” statements. But I’ll take those over lying to the NCAA and covering up ineligible players.

UGA Insider, I understand your frustration. I have been a Bulldog fan since the day I was born. I am just as frustrated as the next fan if not more. When I talk about that “seasonal anxiety disorder” that I suffer from come kick off time in the fall, it is for real. I suffer until the first loss. It lessens with each subsequent loss. By the middle of Sept last year, wow, completely gone. Most of Coach Richts seasons though, I need the Jim Beam as medicine because he has been winning. I look at other programs like Texas and feel pretty good about our situation. They went 5-7 last year and loss their DC.

I wouldn’t worry about the recruiting war with Bama and Florida. IF the dawgs win this year, which they need to do, Richt & Co will be just fine for the 2012 season. If they don’t we had one hell of a great 2011 class and a new coach (we all know who it will be, right?) will bring new excitement and a good to great class.

You know something about the QB situation at Tech that hasn’t been printed?

Because most Tech people are predicting Tech to struggle early on with the QB being new(Days or Lee). Washington winning the job would not be a good sign would it?

You still don’t have the athletes on defense to stop VT, Miami, Clemson or UGA.

Your coach, while capable of changing, has refused to do so. No threat of a passing game equals not being able to score against the better teams.

I say 8-4 for Tech at best.

March 23rd, 2011
2:15 pm

Let us use a 50 year historical comp. How many MAJOR BOWLS has GT been to since 1960? Class? How many?? Majors in this period are defined as Rose, Urange, Sugar, Cotton and Fiesta. Peach, Chic Fil A, nor Music City nor Emerald City nor Boise Blue Carpet, nor the Weedeater nor the Libery Bowl count.

Gator? Heck no. Cap One and Outback are lately ( 15 years or so as majors) and therefore they do count.

Answer: 1967 Orange Bowl and Dodd’s last game with SEC and a bitter loss. His son did play QB for Florida, although maybe not in that game.
2009- Urange Bowl with Iowa in front of 23,000 suburned Iowans and another bitter GT loss.

1990? That Citrus was then only a low, low level maybe low mid level bowl, so it simply does not count, although GT, along with ND and Colorado and Miamai all claimed a share of the NC.

GT has been to two major bowls in 50 years with TWO LOSSES. Frankly, they have only been to ONE, since the Urange is the Urange.

Folks …………. this says it all. All the rest of the GT football talk is just noise.

So the spread is 5 and the overunder is like 140. I think the spread is a joke because scores are always inflated at the end with the winning team getting to the line in the last minute or two.

Taking the over would suggest both teams are running and nailing threes. If Calipari opts to take away our threes then I’ll take the under and we’ll see who is better at staying out of foul trouble, Sullinger or Harrelson.

Buckeye 2nd that about Liz Taylor I had a Uncle that was the poster boy of a “one woman” man he married my Aunt right after getting home from WWII and they were inseparable the rest of their lives..but he told me of being at a party in New York in the early 50’s when she was still in her early 20’s and he told me he was “spell bound” by her beauty, this from a ex-Marine I would never have thought to hear the phrase “spell bound” ever pass his lips. Another good friend of the family meet her in the mid 60’s and said he just couldn’t take his eyes off of her and that if you were a man and she was in a room you could feel her presence even when you weren’t looking at her. Until you factor in the 8 husbands its hard to credit that type of talk..

Buckeye, a spread is designed to get action. 5 is about right.

I’m still predicting overtime.

Don’t know about Harrelson vs Sullinger. Eloy Vargas could actually be the key sub in the game.

There is talk of Liggins guarding Craft which would put Knight on Diebler. Height advantage to Diebler.

UK beat Louisville this year by 20 at Louisville by Liggins taking Siva completely out of the game. The old cut the head off the snake theory.

Holy crap, please forgive me! I didn’t know you were a frequent blogger on the AJC, that changes everything. I take back everything I said about you. You are a superior human being. I beg your forgiveness and want you to know I will never make disparaging remarks to you or any other UGA fan on these blogs ever again.

I dont think any one game, including Fla, is going to do in Richt, but in my mind, 9-3 is the bare minimum acceptable record for Ga in 2011 . Here is my logic.

6 games we have no business losing: Vandy, Ky, Tenn, Ole Miss, N Mx St, and Coastal Carolina (still cant believe they are on the schedule..pathetic). Those aren’t just bad teams, they are VERY bad teams. We better go 6-0 on these cupcakes.

That leaves 6 games, I rank them by my perception of toughness

1-Florida in Jax
2-SC in Athens
3-Boise St in Atlanta
4T- Miss State in Athens
4T-Auburn in Athens
6-Tech in Atlanta

Of the 6 toughest games, there is only one true road game and its in Atlanta. Only one is outside of Ga and that’s just across the border (3 in Athens, BSU in the Ga Dome, Tech in Atlanta and the 50/50 crowd in Jax.) To me, a split of those 6 at 3-3 would be disappointing, but doing just that should put UGA at 9-3.,(assuming 6-0 vs the cupcakes) . lose more than half of those 6,, IMO Richt is in trouble.

Wrong. Tenn & Kent are not easy wins for Mark Richt. 2-2 against each last 4 seasons. Both went 6-6 last seaosn like Richt.

Only gimmes are:
Vandy, Tenn, Ole Miss, N Mx St

Ga Tech, Tenn, Kentucky, up for grabs.

Auburn, Florida, Boise, SC, MSU, all losses.

Somewhere between a 4-8 & 7-5 season, depending on how Richt does against the middle 3: Tech, Tenn, Kentucky.

Richt’s not a big game coach, 2-9 aganst ranked teams since 2008.

Jackie

Home games arn’t an advantage for Richt, as any real fan knows. richt has a great road record, but isn’t good at home, or against Florida. So the schedule doesn’t play to his strengths.

Jackie

M City,

Top 25? I agree that’s the bottom line for job retention, but where oh where does Mr. Richt get the 9 W’s?

4 W’s:
Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina, New Mexico St., Vanderbilt.

He needs 4 more regular season wins, and then a Bowl game win too, if he gets them, best shot is these 4 MUST WIN games (win or get a new job):
1) Kentucky (lost playmakers on offense)
2) Georgia Tech (#1 rush offense–last 3 games went down to final minute)
3) Tenn (they’ll have a great passing game)
4) Miss St. (lost Defensive coor)

Florida is an L. 2 Top 10 ranked teams are L’S: Boise, SC.

Richt’s 2-9 vs ranked teams in last 11 games.

Guys, the reason Richt has done very poorly in the “big games” lately is that he has not had the better team. The problem is the product he is putting out on the filed, not some designation or moniker. What he Is or Is Not. Was he a big game coach prior to 2008? If he wins more in the future, does he just transform back into a big game coach?

He needs to work on getting his teams to play better football, period. If that happens it doesnt matter how big the next game is, or where it’s played. That has always been the case and easily verifiable.

AltamahaDawg

I’m just saying. UGA is likely to send a few football player out on that field those day. Why does everything always has to be reduced to oversimplification like…”Richt will win this one, Richt can’t win that one”.

Do you like Garcia, and Lattimore against our defence now that they have a year to understand it? Murray seeing thier defense the second time around? What do you think there? Do you even have any idea who UF is going to put on the field, and what they are likely to run?

Surely it’s more complicated than some stat from the past, but only some past, not all past. And from different team under different circumstances.

If you don’t think our players are going to do any better against their players this season, that stat is probably going to hold a lot of relavance.

With Coach Richt I never know what to think. From a purely football perspective I don’t see any real strengths in Mark Richt at this point. We had a “good” recruiting class on paper, but we’ve had a lot of those under this Administration.

I know every year we get hyped up hoping for greatness. Using the most basic reasoning and logic in setting expectations why should we hope, or expect for something different than we’ve seen. Very few people are capable of making dramatic change and staying with it over a period of time. That translates into “business as usual” to me. That is unless McGarity has a strong influence and “staying power” in wielding it.

AltamahaDawg

I would say that a complete flip of the defensive staff is very unusual situation. Wouldn’t it be logical to assume that it would improve the second year? In fact isnt that almost a given in sports, second year of anything improving? Plus the upgrade in talent. illogical to me to think the defense will not improve a lot actually.

Freshmen QB’s aren’t terribly unusually, but rarely have success in the SEC. Wouldn’t it be logical to say that a second year QB would not be as easy to shut down as Murray was especially that first few games he had every play in college.

Wouldnt it be logical that with the return of the top (2) Rushers, all the back -up, including a new bigger malcome, Plus #1 recruit Frosh, the Running game should improve. Certainly no worse. same for O-line.

The schedule is not more difficult, the team we play arent going to be any better relative to our potential improvement. Kicking game again, one of the best in the country.

We will see if the new conditioning program has any big inpact, but logically, it seems as if any addded emphasis can’t be a bad thing, especially considering the way the actual losses occured.

Logically, when the losses were mostly single digits last year, its eay to make a case for a better 2011 by any number of things.

Actually, I am counting on him not changing. Looking forward to business as usual. The problem has been, for what ever the factors and I’m sure there are a few, he has not cinducted business as usual.

I don’t see making dramatic changing to who he as the issue. I see it as he needs to correct some issue that have caused his teams to get outscored.

Unfortunately, no, none of that is using common sense.

Check out Richt’s real track record over last 8 seasons and you’ll find, Richt loses MORE games than they year before, 7 out of 8 of those seasons.

So, there’s a 1 out of 8 chance Richt wins more games in 2012 than 2011.

Could it happen? @90% chance it will NOT. @10% chance Richt wins more than 6 games in 2012.

ZZ Tip

I’ll tell you another thing. Richt thinks adding more pounds wins games.

Not so.

Richt had a 30 lb advantage on the lines against UCF, and couldn’t even score a td.

Even if Georgia outweights SC, Florida, BY 30 POUNDS, without the right strategy and execution, it won’t matter.

Despite repeating that stats that has been used in here ad naseum as a substitition for actual football field related points, you never really refuted any of my comments. Which one is not of common sence?

BTW, since you are set on clinging to that stats, I would think that you recognize that the irony is, at this point that stats has hit a mathematical probability of NOT working this year.

AltamahaDawg

You aren’t even stating it correctly. You are claiming that there is a 90% chance of LOSING more than 6 games, not 90% he won’t WIN more. You don’t have a stat on that. Might want to check your calender out as well.

AltamahaDawg

March 23rd, 2011

And I’ll correct myself. I doubt that you caught it.

You claim there is a 90% chance he LOSES MORE than 7 games, actually. Going with something that has happen 0 out 10 seasons huh? Quite a dilemma for a guy just going with the common sense approach.

I see what you say about logic but it just doesn’t seem to pertain to this program. For whatever reason CMR just can’t seem to get the guys on board. What I have seen of Richt that I fear won’t change is his ability to provide Leadership, Direction, and Discipline to the troops. They say they respect him but their performance says otherwise.

Leadership is a skill that is mostly “Natural” but finely honed by experience and education. From what I’ve seen and experienced Richt doesn’t have “Leadership Traits” nor a plan to succeed. I hope I’m wrong and have to eat these words.

A coach I admire and could see in Athens said a while back that a football team needs at least 18 offensive linemen on scholorship on average. I read the other day we have 13. You have to have a plan, a model, to succeed. I just don’t see a plan or formula for our guy. Sorry for the negative posts, I have pretty much stopped posting because I don’t have much positive to say for CMR and don’t want to be constantly negative…..

The cold hard facts are that you asked for any reason to think the W/L record would be better next year, and I gave you 3 or 4, none of which you refute.

And they very much applied to this particular team coach by this particular coach. I listed them by player, by position. Actual 2011 UGA football team.

I get the hyperboles. I do. We need genral Patton. But I don’t care who you hire, that stuff will always be debatable. I don’t think that was your question. It’s not really applicable to this situation either. September 2011 is going to happen.
