UGA adds South Alabama to football schedule for $900,000 payout

Georgia has added South Alabama to its 2014 home football schedule, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity confirmed Friday.

Georgia will pay the Mobile, Ala.,  school $900,000, McGarity said, to make the trip to Sanford Stadium for the Nov. 8, 2014, game.

South Alabama’s 2-year-old football program has lined up multiple games against SEC teams. In addition to Georgia in 2014, the Jaguars will play Mississippi State in 2012, 2014 and 2016, Tennessee in 2013, LSU  in 2016 and Ole Miss in 2017.

South Alabama begins a two-year transition period to the NCAA’s FBS (formerly Division I-A)  level in the 2011 season.  Beginning in 2013, the Jaguars will be eligible for the Sun Belt Conference championship and a bowl berth.

The South Alabama game completes Georgia’s 2014 non-conference schedule, which also includes games against Clemson, Charleston Southern and Georgia Tech.

“Georgia has obviously built a great tradition throughout the years; they’ve won national championships and had hundreds of players play in the NFL,” South Alabama head coach Joey Jones said in a statement Friday.  “It’s going to be a tremendous venue for us to go up and play in; we’re excited about that.”

The $900,000 payout is not the most Georgia has agreed to pay for a non-conference home game. Florida Atlantic will receive $1 million for a 2012 game in Sanford Stadium, while Buffalo and North Texas will be paid $975,000 apiece for games in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

Just asking.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?

Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 44 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

Come to think of it how come you dodged UCF for so long until you had to play them in a bowl game? Could it be because the previous time you played UCF they were in position to kick a chipshot field goal. And then that bogus out of bounds offensive pass interference penalty backed them up 15 yds and basically stole the game from them in the last few seconds.

Anyway enjoy getting all the mileage you can from that La-Monroe game from 4 years ago. I’ll just keep laughing about that loss to UCF a few short months ago.

Son, pull your head out and look at the facts occasionally. UGA lays official claim to two football national championships (42 & 80). However, if the university were insecure and counted “titles” using the same criteria as GT, the Bulldogs could claim six. Also, it wouldn’t have to include “championships” for any years when the rest of the country’s college men were fighting for freedom overseas and unavailable for intercollegiate sports. Let’s assume for a moment your term “freakin losers” is applicable. That means GT consistently loses to “freakin losers” 75% of the time over multiple generations. Tech fans always seem so proud of taking calculus… what they really need is remedial statistics.

You GT supporters are clowns. You love to spout off about academics as if your athletes are somehow brilliant and thosecat Georgia are inferior. Let’s not let the “facts” get in the way of your argument. You go back and cite Jan Kemp, fine. One of those who couldn’t exit remedial studies, so academically challenged he was unable to obtain one of those “free” grades was Tyrone . Its an amazing thing, Tyrone was granted admission to GT after flunking out at Georgia. While at GT he made the Dean’s List and graduated, playing for Bill Curry. Oh it’s true. Maybe you guys could tell us about Sammy Drummer or Brooke Steppe both highly skilled students, Drummer a degree in Maintenance Engineering (janitor). More recently Fish Fry signed a player who didn’t qualify academically out of high school so he couldn’t enroll at Auburn last Fall. GT has one of the lowest graduation rates in the ACC, worse than Georgia by several percentage points. You boys might want to worry about your academic problems. After all it is apparently an institutional problem, you received probation and forfeited games for playing academically ineligible players, did you forget that FACT????

The issue is not who schedules the easier out of conference schedule-the truth of the matter is all of the major programs do it. It has been a good payday for the FBC subdivision schools and some have started using their leverage to up the ante. No the real issue is the disregard for the season ticket holder evidenced by bundling an inferior product and forcing the loyal fan to pay for it. Sure you may get 7 home games, but does anyone really enjoy a blowout. The stated rationale of the NCAA when going to the 12th game was to enable quality nonconference matchups against opponents from other regions. Well it has not worked out that way and for my money if no one is going to use the game the way it was intended, just go back to 11 games where each game is important and the season is less demanding of our student-athletes. Just because some is good, more is not better. Are you listening NFL.

this is normal operating procedures for SEC home games. The larger stadiums that hold at least 85K can and will usually pay about $1M to these schools, and for many of these schools, that money is their sports budget funds for the year. Right? And that was Dec. 7, 1941. And if all of your men were off fighting in the war, how did you field a team in ‘42? And why does UGA not count two Tech victories in ‘43 & ‘44? Again, if all of your men were off fighting in the war, how did you field a team? So, you fielded a team, got beat, didn’t like it, TWICE, and you are going to pretend the games didn’t take place?

I am so amused when GT fans rag on UGA about some non conference opponent. GT acts like they ARE in the same compnay as UGA and all of their former SEC brethren, when they make such lame accusations.

GT IS one of the very schools that UGA or any SEC school has on their schedule at homecoming, like Vandy or Tulane or Rice or Furman or App State or Southern Alabama or Millsaps or Davidson.

Only the best teams should move forward. This BCS and 56 bowls is ruining what is fundamentally a great sport. It will be an honor for our student athletes and coaches to go between the hedges to face the Bulldogs. It is a recruiting tool for our coaches. They can take our team and allow our student athletes to have the opportunity to face SEC talent even though many of them were not recruited on the SEC level. It will be a dream come true for many of them. As has been said, it is not the first time we have played an SEC team. We played Florida with Tebow. Last year we played Kentucky. With an attitude like you have, “We are not going to win a BCS Championship anytime soon” and I quote, please don’t come to any games at Sanford Stadium. Staying home is the right decision. You would just be wasting a perfectly good seat that a real fan could use. You don’t even understand how scheduling works and you think anyone would miss your ignorant voice?

Hey, all you tech fans, all I can say is you look like losers, to post something negative on this silly article shows how sad you all are.I am not a dawg fan, but look at all tech posts here and it kills me how jealous you are, south Alabama will likely be a better game than GT will be, what is richt like 11-0 against tech, do you have any wins vs Georgia the last decade. Get a life guys, and bb coach for that matter, thought you were a bb school? Guess not. Pathetic.

Ed (The Original),

The garbage you refer to is just part of the formula for winning. No team can play every game against top flight opponents, as much as the fans might want to. And certainly, no national champion has at least in the last 20 years (if ever) played a complete schedule against even all top 25 opponents. But, referring to UGA, it was just two or three years ago that we played a schedule that included, I think, 8 games against teams with coaches who had won national championships. The trick is finding a balance between playing a challenging schedule but not one that is so difficult that you significantly reduce your chances of winning a championship by over doing it.

Ed (the orginal),

And another thing, your comparison to Dooley was a bad one. As you know, he had more than one losing season and took 16 years to win his national championship. Did you not see the recruiting class that Mark Richt just brought in? He will win with these guys. And if he doesn’t eventually, nobody is going to be bragging about 8-4 seasons then. His record is excellent, despite the recent down turn and he has done it in the best conference in the nation.

Bama Fan thanks for taking up for us, but I am guessing USA will give us a better game than Bama will. Not like Bama has done so well against the Dawgs in the last few game we have played the Toilet Paper and Wash Powder crowd.

All major programs schedule cupcakes. Period. This is part of the business of college football. Given the rigor of the SEC (perennial winner of the BCS NC trophy) schedule, this is needed to provide a break in the competition. It is also a win-win for both the major program and the wannabe – - even if that wannabe is another locational Southern state (vice a directional Michigan).

The question for Georgia fans is: What is the minimum number of wins this year for you to be happy with Richt? You have perennial top-10 recruiting classes, yet Auburn won as many games last season as you totaled over the last two. If Richt only wins 8 this year, will you be happy?

Tennessee, LSU (twice), Florida (thrice), Alabama, and Auburn have all celebrated NCs since 1980. When will Georgia get its next one? Is Richt the coach to deliver it?

I have a woody just thinking about this game. Looks like we are aiming for a national title for the 34th season in a row. Way to go guys, $1M bucks buys us a win but we loose further respect by not taking any risk.

Has everybody at UGA lost their mind these days? Looks like AJ Green lost his while at UGA…. the NFL evaluator called him a “Dumb receiver” ….

Yep, Pulwud and VanceD are obviously the same, pathetic “person”. Amen to DawgVoice.

Delta, FlyMe, Pope, and Ed …you just don’t seem to get it when it comes to scheduling. How many times do you have to read, “…ALL major programs do it…”?

Sandman…great idea, going back to an 11 game sked. But, Brian from Chas Southern also makes a good point: these “little” schools love scheduling these games. Money and recognition…not to mention competing against the best, maybe even trying to show the big boys that they were worthy of being recruited.

Let’s back up just a little. What if the headline had read, “UGA Adds Clemson to 2014 Schedule”? Then it’d be a whole different discussion. Actually, adding Clempsum should have been the headline. That’s a good ol’ rivalry. Nearly every game came down to a last minute field goal or TD. But we dropped em when the SEC mandated an eight game sked. I’m looking forward to that game.

Mr Dudley, why are you so down on Coach Dooley. I’ve met the man a couple of times. He’s a nice guy to all fans. Very approachable. And I’m no die-hard dog fan, but my friend you are way over the top. UGA is no worse than many others. And not as bad as alot of others. Hate is bad for your health. Go see a therapist.

For example, Southern Cal has never, ever played an FCS school. Their out-of-conference games next year are against Minnesota, Syracuse, and Notre Dame.

Alabama’s Mark Barron arrestedEmail Print Comments255 Associated Press

MOBILE, Ala. — University of Alabama safety Mark Barron has been arrested on charges of hindering prosecution, a misdemeanor charge.

SEC blog
ESPN.com’s Chris Low writes about all things SEC in his conference blog.

• Blog network:
College Football Nation

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday on its website that Barron was booked on the charge. His bond was listed at $500.

No additional details were available, and it could not immediately be determined if Barron had an attorney.

The arrest comes as the football team is set to begin spring practice Monday.

Barron led the team with 75 tackles last season. He has been rehabilitating from a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in November.

Two quick points – as always i find it interesting other teams fans activity on a UGA exclusive story. As to the complainers about the patsy on the schedule, I hear ya, would much rather have Ho Ho State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Miami, etc. – would be great for the program to play those even if we lose, BUT…. don’t complain about no NCs, which are hard to obtain anyway and getting through the SEC schedule undefeated plus playing out of conference powerhouses is very rare.

And if lil Timmy jumped in a pile of S…T you would do it to? I hear the UGA Alum and Fans SCREAM HOW GOOD WE ARE, but then feel good about playing JOKES? I will not spend GOOD MONEY to get season tickets to see this type of CRAP game. I would rather lose to the TEXAS LONG HORNS (in Athens or Austin) by 20 than beat USA by 50 in Athens at the price of the ticket.
