UGA adds South Alabama to football schedule for $900,000 payout

Georgia has added South Alabama to its 2014 home football schedule, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity confirmed Friday.

Georgia will pay the Mobile, Ala.,  school $900,000, McGarity said, to make the trip to Sanford Stadium for the Nov. 8, 2014, game.

South Alabama’s 2-year-old football program has lined up multiple games against SEC teams. In addition to Georgia in 2014, the Jaguars will play Mississippi State in 2012, 2014 and 2016, Tennessee in 2013, LSU  in 2016 and Ole Miss in 2017.

South Alabama begins a two-year transition period to the NCAA’s FBS (formerly Division I-A)  level in the 2011 season.  Beginning in 2013, the Jaguars will be eligible for the Sun Belt Conference championship and a bowl berth.

The South Alabama game completes Georgia’s 2014 non-conference schedule, which also includes games against Clemson, Charleston Southern and Georgia Tech.

“Georgia has obviously built a great tradition throughout the years; they’ve won national championships and had hundreds of players play in the NFL,” South Alabama head coach Joey Jones said in a statement Friday.  “It’s going to be a tremendous venue for us to go up and play in; we’re excited about that.”

The $900,000 payout is not the most Georgia has agreed to pay for a non-conference home game. Florida Atlantic will receive $1 million for a 2012 game in Sanford Stadium, while Buffalo and North Texas will be paid $975,000 apiece for games in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

To get the players really fired up to play south alabama, will richt order a blackout or endzone taunting dance? It could do the trick.

Mr Dudley, why are you so down on Coach Dooley. I’ve met the man a couple of times. He’s a nice guy to all fans. Very approachable. And I’m no die-hard dog fan, but my friend you are way over the top. UGA is no worse than many others. And not as bad as alot of others. Hate is bad for your health. Go see a therapist.

Well, not *every* team in *every* conference schedules “cupcakes”.

For example, Southern Cal has never, ever played an FCS school. Their out-of-conference games next year are against Minnesota, Syracuse, and Notre Dame.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday on its website that Barron was booked on the charge. His bond was listed at $500.

No additional details were available, and it could not immediately be determined if Barron had an attorney.

The arrest comes as the football team is set to begin spring practice Monday.

Barron led the team with 75 tackles last season. He has been rehabilitating from a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in November.

Two quick points – as always i find it interesting other teams fans activity on a UGA exclusive story. As to the complainers about the patsy on the schedule, I hear ya, would much rather have Ho Ho State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Miami, etc. – would be great for the program to play those even if we lose, BUT…. don’t complain about no NCs, which are hard to obtain anyway and getting through the SEC schedule undefeated plus playing out of conference powerhouses is very rare.

Ga will beat s alabama by 50+—-it’s worth $900,000 for a blowout win. Ga has millions in their ath dept bank account—this is chump change.

And if lil Timmy jumped in a pile of S…T you would do it to? I hear the UGA Alum and Fans SCREAM HOW GOOD WE ARE, but then feel good about playing JOKES? I will not spend GOOD MONEY to get season tickets to see this type of CRAP game. I would rather lose to the TEXAS LONG HORNS (in Athens or Austin) by 20 than beat USA by 50 in Athens at the price of the ticket.
