UGA adds South Alabama to football schedule for $900,000 payout

Georgia has added South Alabama to its 2014 home football schedule, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity confirmed Friday.

Georgia will pay the Mobile, Ala.,  school $900,000, McGarity said, to make the trip to Sanford Stadium for the Nov. 8, 2014, game.

South Alabama’s 2-year-old football program has lined up multiple games against SEC teams. In addition to Georgia in 2014, the Jaguars will play Mississippi State in 2012, 2014 and 2016, Tennessee in 2013, LSU  in 2016 and Ole Miss in 2017.

South Alabama begins a two-year transition period to the NCAA’s FBS (formerly Division I-A)  level in the 2011 season.  Beginning in 2013, the Jaguars will be eligible for the Sun Belt Conference championship and a bowl berth.

The South Alabama game completes Georgia’s 2014 non-conference schedule, which also includes games against Clemson, Charleston Southern and Georgia Tech.

“Georgia has obviously built a great tradition throughout the years; they’ve won national championships and had hundreds of players play in the NFL,” South Alabama head coach Joey Jones said in a statement Friday.  “It’s going to be a tremendous venue for us to go up and play in; we’re excited about that.”

The $900,000 payout is not the most Georgia has agreed to pay for a non-conference home game. Florida Atlantic will receive $1 million for a 2012 game in Sanford Stadium, while Buffalo and North Texas will be paid $975,000 apiece for games in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

Bulldog arch,

You mention 2 pansies that Alabama plays in Kent State and North Texas. Curiously you left out that we play at Penn State. Georgia also plays 2 easy cupcakes- matter of fact we all play at least 2 and sometimes 3 pansy teams and some programs even load up with 4 noncon pansies. 2-3 is usually the norm for an sec team.

Good ol’ South Alabama. A real rival that should fill the stands and bring us an exciting game. Can’t wait for this one. Do they have a mascot? Permanent or Temporary?

Since Techies are obviously in the mood to run their big fat mouths about OOC schedules, let’s take a look at Tech’s first 3 oppnnents for the 2011 season, shall we?

D-1aa Western Carolina: 2-9 in 2010.

Middle Tennessee State: 6-7 in the Sun Belt in 2010.

Kansas: 3-9 in 2010. Lost to North Dakota State. Would any Techie with a big fat mouth like to tell us what they did the following week? Didn’t think so big mouths.

So there you have it folks. Georgia Tech football fans are clearly some of the dumbest people on the planet.

Thanks.

Great game to schedule. S. Alabama along with Georgia Tech, two wins and a break in the traditionally tough conference schedule.

Way to to Dogs! These local games are very good for all programs. Notice Auburn nor Bama will schedule to play an in-state team for fear of getting embarrassed. Troy has played every SEC team now except for those two, and I can honestly call them both chicken for that!

Steve, Skeezix: Name a fairer system than capitalism going back to the beginning of recorded time. What are the requirements for teaching/firemen/police? As soon as the need for the positions exceeds the demand salaries will go up. No one is required to become a teacher/fireman/policeman and if it pays an unfair wage they are free to go find someone that wants to pay them more for their talents. It is not such a sad world when you exercise your right to be responsible for yourself. Try it.

@WIN WITH RICHT….

Win your conference, better yet, win your side of the conference first. And next thing, try to crack the top 10 with all your top 10 talent recruits. No other team in the country gets the consistent talent that UGA gets and sucks as bad as y’all do. Something must be wrong with the water up there in Athens cuz all of your 5 stars end up with no stars by the time all is said and done.

Georgia Tech recruiting classes rank 30-40 every year on average and we still scare the s h i t out of y’all every year when we play you. You should crush us every year, but you don’t, you constantly squeak out bull s h i t wins. Y’all are the biggest underachieving bunch of thugs/rednecks that this nation has to offer, I hope your proud of it.

Win with Richt,

Why don’t we schedule LA-Monroe anymore? Easy. They don’t want to play us for awhile.

Come to think of it how come you dodged UCF for so long until you had to play them in a bowl game? Could it be because the previous time you played UCF they were in position to kick a chipshot field goal. And then that bogus out of bounds offensive pass interference penalty backed them up 15 yds and basically stole the game from them in the last few seconds.

Anyway enjoy getting all the mileage you can from that La-Monroe game from 4 years ago. I’ll just keep laughing about that loss to UCF a few short months ago.

If South Alabama and Georgia State can field FBS or Division 1 teams, why can’t Georgia Southern do the same? Ten years ago, I thought Ga. Southern would have become a division 1 school and on its way to joining a conference such as the ACC. Southern seems to have fizzled out.

Are you telling me that with AJ Green and Ealey and Charles and that great O-line that the dawgs couldn’t break the white end zone stripe in 3 hours of football? Say it aint so!

Son, pull your head out and look at the facts occasionally. UGA lays official claim to two football national championships (42 & 80). However, if the university were insecure and counted “titles” using the same criteria as GT, the Bulldogs could claim six. Also, it wouldn’t have to include “championships” for any years when the rest of the country’s college men were fighting for freedom overseas and unavailable for intercollegiate sports. Let’s assume for a moment your term “freakin losers” is applicable. That means GT consistently loses to “freakin losers” 75% of the time over multiple generations. Tech fans always seem so proud of taking calculus… what they really need is remedial statistics.

It really is comical and it makes you look so damn ignorant. UGA fans need to take a step back, realize that they have a good program, but an enormously underachieving program. Realize that this is part of the ‘foot print’ that Florida used to win NCS’S – but personally would prefer playing quality teams from other regions. Yes, BYU has been added and if memory serves – Michigan; but would be great to see more quality games verses running over teams that would have trouble beating the scout team.

I wouldn’t laugh to loud about South Alabama folks. Many of you don’t know just how much talent there is in the Mobile area for bigtime football players. South will be the 3rd best football team in Alabama in the next 3-4 years replacing both UAB and Troy because they have much more to offer to the kids. Joey Jones has a great young staff.

The practice of adding two or three easy win home games to the major college schedules is certainly nothing new.
The new part is the huge payouts that are given to the small schools. Along with coaches salaries, and what is paid to get home games with the cupcake opponents is
being funded by the fans due to unrealistic ticket prices, concessions food and parking cost.

I would rather take the Tenn scheduling philosophy..schedule top non conf games . if you win, great, if you lose, it isnt as bad as losing to somebody like S Ala.. And the crowd actually has a compelling game to watch.
