UGA reports violation in Crowell recruitment, bars Richt from calling recruits next month

Georgia broke an NCAA rule in the recruitment of prized tailback Isaiah Crowell and will respond by barring coach Mark Richt from phoning recruits next month, according to a letter from UGA athletic director Greg McGarity to the NCAA.

An attempt by Richt in January to demonstrate the Bulldogs’ need for Crowell by having him stand in as the missing tailback in an offensive formation with current players resulted in a secondary violation of the rule against “game day simulation” with recruits, McGarity wrote.

Crowell signed with Georgia last month, and the school’s self-reported violation had the temporary effect of making him ineligible. But the NCAA staff, acting on a request in McGarity’s March 4 letter, already has reinstated Crowell’s eligibility, according to an e-mail from the NCAA to UGA on Friday.

McGarity told the NCAA that Richt did not believe the January scenario constituted a “game day simulation.” However, McGarity wrote that “as a result of the violation,” Richt will receive a letter of admonishment and will be prohibited from telephoning recruits and their parents during the NCAA’s “spring evaluation period” in April.

The NCAA could accept those penalties or could impose additional ones. In most cases, if the NCAA agrees the violation is secondary, meaning inadvertent and resulting in no significant advantage, self-imposed penalties are accepted.

McGarity said Monday that he “will have no comment other than what’s in the letter,” a copy of which was obtained under the state’s Open Records Act. Richt was not available for comment, spokesman Claude Felton said. Crowell did not return messages.

McGarity described the incident in detail in his 1 ½-page letter:

“[Crowell] was on campus for his official visit January 21-23, 2011. . . . [Richt] and the football staff arranged for the offensive linemen, wide receivers, fullback and quarterback to gather . . . in the indoor practice facility that [Richt's] office overlooks. The [players] . . . were dressed in their game-day uniform tops.

“Coach Richt, [Crowell] and [Crowell's] family left his office to join the group. By the time [Crowell] made his way to the field, the team was in an offensive alignment without a running back. [Crowell] was subsequently handed a jersey and stood in the vacant running back position . . . After [Crowell] stood in the position, the student-athletes broke from the alignment and talked to him. The activity lasted less than five minutes.”

Richt’s idea “was to create a feeling for [Crowell] that he was needed,” McGarity wrote, adding that Richt didn’t think having a recruit stand in a formation without running a play constituted a violation. However, Richt “did not check with the compliance office beforehand.”

The SEC subsequently informed Georgia that the NCAA rule against game-day simulation is “all-encompassing and includes the activity [Crowell] participated in,” McGarity wrote. Also, it is against the rule for a recruit to try on or wear a game-day jersey outside of the locker room.

Georgia “does not believe a recruiting advantage was gained as [Crowell's] mother has stated that her son knew he was going to attend UGA since he was a young child,” according to McGarity’s letter.

According to the NCAA by-laws, every original, creative, and effective recruiting idea is a violation. Only form letters and pre-recorded statements will be allowed.

The rules are so purposefully vague, ambiguous, and volumnious that coaches cannot reasonably be expected to ascertain on the fly whether a creative idea is a violation or not. It’s gotten out of hand. There only need to be 4 rules: 1. You can only call them, text them, or send them e-mails between this date and that date between this hour and that hour. 2. You can only talk to them in person on your own campus during their designated visit. 3. You can’t give them or anyone connected to them money, Cecil Newton. 4. You can’t give them or anyone connected to them anything of value except a nice meal on-campus, an overnight stay in on-campus housing, and a t-shirt from the bookstore.

I have a feeling that Richt was not completely unaware that he was pressing the rule. I am also sure he knew how secondary voilations are dealt with and what the risk/reward was.

Seems like in this case the system is worked:

Some of these kid’s have been visiting school’s a dozen or more times over the year’s. When a 5 star decides to go to Auburn or Alabama instead of Georgia , On one of his visit’s something happened that made that recruit decide that was the place. Most of the time that one incident swayed the recruit to go to that school. Unless it was only by walking around campus, watching a game or only going over what courses he will take ,anything else, would be the reason he picked that school and would be a violation.
A few week’s ago the student body was chanting Jenkin’s and Crowell and one other recruit’s names at UGA’s basketball game should have been a recruiting violation. In other word’s if anything happen’s to that recruit while he is visiting that potentially could influence him to go there is a recruiting violation.
When coach Richt took Stafford fishing shouldn’t that be a violation. If Stafford is an avid fisherman . something like that would definitely influence a recruit.
If you video taped every 4 or 5 star recruit you would find that he was influence to go to a particular school because one or two thing’s that that school made sure he had or ran into during each visit. It may be a date with a cheerleader every time.
There is no way you can police this. Every school does it.

Chip and the AJC are doing the digging here and in other situations becuase it brings hits. There are many Dawg fans and many dawghaters who will respond. No other program is so beseiged by constant requests for material under the FOI Act. Thsi doesn’t happen in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi, or Kentucky. Most papers wouldn’t either bother or dare to spend so much time tracing trivia, but them they’re not falling in circulation with such a hot-button topic readily at hand. If the AU mess were here or Richt had done what Tressel has done, they’d be calling for heads to roll. I bet the office that handles FOI issues has a chair with AJC stenciled in gold leaf.

Rad Penties

… Georgia doesn’t want to be lumped in with the other recruiting sleaze buckets in the SEC.

You’re about forty years too late to prevent that.

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

Suntanned Saint Mark isn’t all he appears to be, is he?

Maybe the NCAA will go easy on Richt. I mean it is not like five of his players sold memorabilia for cash and tattoos. It is not like that happened, he knew about it, and then sat on the information. It is not like his players were allowed to play once the violation was confirmed and then punishing himself more by making his players come back for another year of football.

Tell the NCAA Richt will have McGarrity slap his wrist with a silly band and make him jog 10 times around the track and give up 1% of his entire income. That’ll show him.

There must be something more to this, after all it’s the HEADLINE story on ajc.com

Since the AJC is constantly on the look for the “Big” story, I would like to encourage them to attend some of Coach Nick Saban’s pressers. I’m sure the AJC would like to challenge CNS on how many and how he determines who will and who won’t be allowed back on the Ala roster for this Fall. After all, the outlets in Ala check their “sac” at the door before entering. Perhaps the AJC could do an open records request for Ala’s secondary violations, say like Kirby Smart making calls to prospects during the Sun-Wed “dead” period. The AJC won’t do that, it takes courage to walk into Tuscaloosa and ask for information, and I don’t believe there’s anyone “MAN ENOUGH” on the AJC staff to cross General Saban.

The NCAA and the US law/ legal system need to do the same thing. For every law passed 3 need to be eliminated. We need fewer rules/laws. Write a Law/Rule that covers a wide range of moral and ethical dilemmas. This country is proving Cheating, Lying, and Stealing is the best way to get ahead. Something has to change.
This is not a Slam on the University where a received my Fine Arts Degree, but a Slam on the decaying American Values and Culture as a whole. How do people look their children and grandchildren in the eye and justify the actions of people our culture holds in such high regard? Tech and UGA Teachers, Administrators, Athletic Department Personal, and Students have been arrested for a myriad of offences over the last year. Add to that list Police, Politicians, and US Military Personal and the US seems to be in total moral decline. Charlie Sheen, Snookie, and Lohan (to name a few) are people that fill the news with the CRAP they call lives. I hate to see this attitude filling OUR college athletics too.

This is only a secondary violation but it is in fact a violation of a very clear cut rule. Most average fans like myself know all about the simulation rule. It was the most abused practice in recruiting until they banned it a couple years ago. Secondary violations happen all the time and its not that big a deal. But in this case Richt absolutely knew that he was breaking a rule since such a huge deal was made about game simulation tactics involving jerseys a few days ago. That’s the only thing that bothers me about this. Richt knew it was a rule and knowingly violated it. There is no way the man did not know about this rule. No way.

I can’t figure out if this blog is a testimony of how much UGA haters really hate UGA or maybe if a lot of these stupid comment bloggers need a life. I see people from Tenn. Florida, 2 schools in Alabama, 1 school (the competition?) from Georgia, Ohio and I probably missed a few so speak up and let me know.
It is sort of like when you were in elementary school. You always tried to give the one you liked most, a hard time so she/he would know you were paying attention to them, and really had a crush on them.
Now, I want you to know that the Georgia athletic administration thanks you all for all the love and support, you show on these blogs. We would ask you though, to please be careful when you are salivating on your keyboards as you could recieve a mild shock, or worse yet, (this would be a true crusher) ruin your keyboard so you could no longer type your adulation for UGA on these truely important blogs.
Oh by the way, UGA will be reporting another secondary violation soon. It seems the little bulldog that Crowell had with him during the taping, had to pee and since it was on a UGA maintained building, he violated the NCAA rulebook, by not promptly cleaning it up, and it probably influenced Crowell to sign. After all, if the dog feels comfortable enough to pee on UGA grounds, this is a sure sign to me that UGA is blessed. It is a sign that UGA cares.
I think half of you didn’t even read the story attached, but I am not surprised, since this is a major news break, for all the UGA haters out there. I am just glad the dog didn’t drop a load on the floor, or the NCAA would have probably called that a gift and unnecessary inducement.

The NCAA has some weird rules. You can not include a recruit in a formation, however you can have them don a jersey with their anticipated number, walk through the tunnel that is simulating game day, and have their name introduced over a loud speaker as if it were game day.

Very interesting.

This is a non-story because Mark Richt did the right thing and self reported. It’s never the violation that kills a program, it’s the cover up.

Because Richt pointed this out no one will ever care. If Richt pulled a Tressel/Pearl he would have covered this up and it would blow up a year from now. If Bruce Pearl just fessed up and admitted that he screwed up and let a recruit at a barbeque, honestly no one would have ever cared; lying about it is what killed him.

We got the top recruit in the country and the miniscule violation that sealed the deal is now history because our coach is smart enough to see the big picture.

This is the problem, this was a well publicized rule change as Phil Fulmer was one of the greatest at having players don UT jerseys, have players run out of the tunnel with Rocky Top playing while their name was announced over the P.A.
There have been over 40 self reported cases of this practice since 2009. In 7 of those cases went on to become major violations while coupled with other minor or secondary violations.
That is why we all need to worry to some degree.

Whether Bulldog fans want to admit it or not, UGA may take a major infraction on this gaff because Mark Richt acknowledged he knew the rules and failed to follow them, even if he miss derstood the full intent of the rule.

There has been a history of a lack of “Institutional Control” getting worse from the top down, starting with the former AD and working all the way down to the long list of player arrests and suspensions due to academic issues, etc.

After the Jan Kemp fiasco several years ago, and then the basketball cheating scandal, UGA’s athletic department will be looked at more carefully than other programs, and if there’s evidence that the football program’s taking liberties that the NCAA can finally hold over your heads, this may be the one.

Personally, I don’t think it’s a big deal, but from what I’ve heard, this may end up being worse than you think.

The NCAA does require that members of the athletic dept. take a 40 question test concerning rules violations in football. The NCAA rule book for football alone is a 273 page book. I wonder how they decided to pick out 40 questions from that mammoth book of rules. It is no wonder that the colleges and universities, have whole legal staffs involved with the main job of insuring that the rules are kept.
The SEC office informed CMR and the AD that this incident was a violation. I don’t believe the NCAA has said anything about it yet. It sounds like to me, as it is being reported here, that they did not have on a complete uniform and did not run any plays with Crowell, so CMR did not feel it, violated the rules. Since they seem to usually, amend or change a portion of the rules each year, supposedly to cover things that may have been considering skirting around a rule, or misinterpretation, I am sure they will clarify this point in their next update.

Fratdaqwg,

According to the NCAA rulebook: The player must leave the locker room with a jersey on, in order for it to be a violation. Mind you, it is perfectly legal to receive that jersey outside of the locker room, and put it on then. But if you enter the locker room with the jersey on or receive it in the locker room, it is illegal,to wear it once you are outside the locker room. You can also show pictures of jerseys with the recruits name on them in a photo, or press conference and this is not considered a violation either. If the young kid steps up to the podium on signing day, with a team jersey on and has not signed the paper yet, then this is also a violation.

This is the sad state of affairs called “The NCAA Rule Book”.

This will be one of the most unpredictable seasons ever for the SEC. The West is wide open top to bottom. The last place team in the west could be better than the first place team in the east. East is incredibly weak this year with every team loaded with freshman looking to contribute which is a recipe for disaster in our conference. Here you have Auburn evidently having a Parent involved in a huge scam and the worst thing that happened was the Dad not being allowed to put a foot on campus but so what Cam Newtons in the NFL now.
Then you have a Head Coach (Treschel) lying to NCAA investigators about recruiting violations and getting no harsh penalties. Atleast not to this point.
Then Mark Richt of Georgia admitting that 2 ex-bulldogs were at a signing day and now this. You gotta be joking me right?
Its amazing of all the crazy rules these coaches have to remember so much infact that they need to carry a book as a point of reference just so they dont violate a rule.
Whats next tying an athletes shoe laces for him? My guess is the NCAA is like any business and when they need money or they see a gambit that a college is getting too good in sports then they impose some type of infractions to level the playing field and recoop some money from these rich college programs.
Hey im for someone breaking rules such as buying a guy a new car or giving his family money or a new house so he’ll sign but these little rinky dinky rules are just crazy.
Ohio State Buckeye Program is deservant of harder punishment because of their Head Coach lying……at best they should fire that guy.
I was shocked that Treschel violated anything because i thought he was a standup guy and a very honest outstanding coach that Ohio St. was very lucky to have but now i dont know.
But im sure they wont fire him because its always about winning and making the college money and people in sports dont really care about your character but only money in the end.

If anybody would like to see a copy of the NCAA rules book for this year, you can get it by going to the NCAA website under athletics. It is 273 pages thick. The rules cover everything from, how you dress, to how you must always represent the NCAA in a good light. It is written at the reading level of about a 6th grader. Does that tell you anything. If UGA only is guilty of a few nebulous minor infractions like this one mentioned, I will be perfectly happy with that. At least they are self reporting them, rather than having somebody tell on us. I can’t see how any school comes through unscathed with that much crap to worry about. I am willing to bet that every school in the NCAA has commited a minor infraction even in this year. The NCAA is watching the SEC like a hawk, because of some past indiscretions commited by a few schools, and are ready to pounce as soon as they see anything, that could possibly violate some part of their Bible (rulebook).

DaMan,

Read the article thoroughly if you can. The violation was for a very nebulous rule and CMR did not feel he was violating the rule. Better even, go onto the NCAA site and download the PDF version of the football regulations for the NCAA. It is a 273 page book, written on about, a 6 grade level of reading. I would also bet that just about any school, has violated one small rule according to the NCAA every year.
UGA fans would probably not be so fixated about your troubles if you and some of your fellow fans did not come on to a blog that concerns UGA, and spout a bunch of negative crap. Read your fellow fans blog comments, “CAM NEWTON”, and it should be verey obvious why UGA fans spout negative comments about Auburn. The constant negative comments directed towards each other are pretty childish, so why don’t you just decide to be above them then, and maybe that will raise the level of comments on this blog a bit.
We are all SEC fans I assume and we must at least try to remember, that what is good for one team in the SEC, is good for all of the SEC. We do not need to give any ammunition to people outside the conference, to make disparging remarks about people from the south, or our conference. Petty, childish remarks don’t help that situation. I get mad at myself at times for even getting into any banter when it comes to people insulting UGA, but then I remember that I am an adult, and need to act like one. Stooping down to the level of even answering a childish, negative, comment, doesn’t make me feel any better anyway.

There would be a lot more slow days at the AJC, if they weren’t based in Atlanta and worried so much about UGA, since it is in Athens. If they have nothing to write about Tech. that is good, they will always find something to write about UGA, that is negative. That is how they justify some of their readership, and can say that they are successful.
They even report in a column titled “Junkyard Dawg”, about Ohio States problems, and what that has to do with UGA escapes me. It’s all about getting comments in the blogs they write, and the more they can get negative comments about anything, the more they feel they are succeeding at their jobs.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?

Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 44 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

Now that we’re in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a serious discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any dawgtard players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while the clueless Mark Richt has absolutely no control over his players. And then there is the infamous “red panties” incident that will haunt UGA for decades.

UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.

DaMan,

Every schools fans have that same attitude. If you don’t believe that just read these blogs. Auburn fans are so darn defensive about Cam, that they shoot negative comments about anybody who would question anything said about him. It is by far, not confined to just UGA alone, by any stretch of the imagination.
UGA fans really believe that we have an honest, religous coach, who attempts to do things the right way. They also hate that we have had a couple of down years. It is naturally to be expected, that when fans of other schools, come onto a blog about UGA, and are always negative, you want to defend the school you support. I am sure that is true on any schools blog in the country.
I am just saying that we all need to be a little considerate of each o9ther, and remember, we are all in the same conference. If one school makes a mistake, it reflects bad on the whole conference. I spent four year in Wisconsin and you would not believe how negative they are about people from the south. Maryland, Delaware and most other northern areas all seem to think bad of the south. We do not need to add any fuel to their fires, believe me. A little respect by all, would help a little bit in disproving that image.
Those other conferences have fans that defend their schools just as vigorously as SEC fans do theirs. It is for sure not just a southern team. I will also grant that a certain amount of envy enters into the equation, both in the SEC and the whole NCAA. It is just counter productive in my way of thinking to be obsessed about another school, to the point of using childish remarks to disparge each other. Maybe it makes some folks feel good about themselves I suppose.

Folks It is not the Referees or the NCAA. We don’t lose games because of either. Like my Father told me a long time ago. “If you don’t like the cops or Jail, then don’t put yourself in a position where they can control your life.” UGA coaches and players need to learn this simple fact. The refs can steal a game if it is on the last play ie. the Tennessee vs LSU game last year. If there is a PLAY left to Play then you have a chance to change the outcome. I don’t like all the NCAA rules but If you just do what is moral and ethical, then these issues will not be a problem.

It was a sales pitch gimmick that is against the rules. Coach basically called the starting player to a meeting in the OFF SEASON and had them dress as players. That is an ORGANIZED TEAM FUNCTION. That could be a practice before Spring Practice started. Look I think Richt is an OK guy. We can’t forget why we got him. He was a member of THUG U. Sat on the bench mind you, but he saw how Miami went about their business. Richt then joined FSU. A school with a Preacher as a head coach like Jim Baker. Richt has learned how to bend break and skirt the rules for the best. We hired him because of his resume. We assumed he could recruit Florida very well and Beat the Gators.
