UGA players ‘jumped around like 7-year-olds that just won a Little League championship’ after NCAA bid

(Updated 9:30 p.m.)

ATHENS — After days of debate about whether Georgia would reach the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, the verdict came quickly Sunday night: The Bulldogs are in.

Georgia will open against Pac-10 tournament champion Washington on Friday in an East Region game in Charlotte.  Game time will be approximately 9:45 p.m.

Georgia’s selection was announced early in the hour-long, nationally televised bracket unveiling, and the Bulldogs’ No. 10 seed revealed that they were not as close of a call as many analysts had projected. The Georgia players got the news while watching the selection show in the team’s locker room.

“They jumped around like 7-year-olds that just won a Little League championship,” coach Mark Fox said.

“I don’t think I’ve been that happy in a long time,” forward Trey Thompkins said, “just seeing our whole team jump around and throw stuff in the locker room and hug each other as much as we did. That was a blessing, just to be able to see our name as in the tournament.”

Said guard Dustin Ware: “It was incredible. There is no other feeling like it, just knowing you’re in and all your hard work really paid off this year. . . . We went crazy. Some guys – I know I was one of them – were real emotional.”

Georgia is in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008, when the Bulldogs received an automatic bid after unexpectedly winning the SEC tournament, and for the first time as an at-large team since 2002.

The Bulldogs (21-11) drew an interesting opening opponent. Fox’s first assistant-coaching job was in 1991-93 at Washington, where he met his wife, Cindy, who worked at the time as the Huskies’ director of marketing and promotions.

Friday’s game will be the first-ever meeting in basketball between Georgia and Washington.

Washington, a No. 7 seed, has a 23-10 record and won the Pac-10 tournament with an overtime victory over Arizona. The Huskies’ best player is 5-foot-9 junior point guard Isaiah Thomas, whose dramatic last-second jumper won the title game. Thomas is averaging 16.8 points per game.

The Georgia-Washington winner will play again in Charlotte on Sunday against the winner of Friday’s North Carolina-Long Island game.

Debate had raged about Georgia’s NCAA prospects in the 48 hours following the team’s loss to Alabama in the SEC tournament quarterfinals, the Bulldogs’ second loss to the Crimson Tide in seven days. But as it turned out, Georgia made the NCAA field with room to spare and Alabama was left out.

On the selection show, committee chairman Gene Smith basically said head-to-head results are not the decisive determinant.

“A lot of people put head-to-head as a high priority in their criteria for different situations, [but] there were things with Alabama that didn’t stack up compared to the other teams,” said Smith, the Ohio State athletic director.

Fox was excited, but not surprised, by the Bulldogs’ selection. He had argued for a couple of weeks that the team’s season-long resume merited a bid.

“When you compared our body of work to some other teams that were supposedly on the bubble,” Fox said Sunday night, “I felt confident in our body of work. This is about a four-month marathon, not a four-day postseason tournament, and I think sometimes people forget that. I did have a good feeling, but you never know for sure.”

When the Bulldogs found out for sure, “the way we were jumping around, it seemed like we won the national championship,” guard Travis Leslie said. He and other players admitted to developing doubts about whether they’d get into the tournament as they listened to analysts debate the bubble over the weekend.

Among the factors in Georgia’s favor with the selection committee, though, were a solid RPI (although it slipped from 39 to 47 in the past few days), a 7-4 road record and only two losses against teams that rank below 35 in the RPI (both to No. 80 Alabama).

The selection ended a stressful wait for the Bulldogs and their fans and families.

“At four o’clock [Sunday] morning, my 8-year-old daughter woke me up, and she asked if we were in the Big Dance yet,” Fox said. “I said, ‘Honey, you need to go back to bed.’ She said, ‘Daddy, it’s Sunday. You said we’d know on Sunday if we’d be in the Big Dance.’”

Said Thompkins: “I was at home with my family [Saturday], and they were asking me, ‘Do you think we’ll be in?’ And I really had no answer for them. I lost a little sleep about it, but I can sleep real good tonight.”

Why again is everyone so shocked that Bama didn’t make it? Because UGA/UA was a “Play-In Game” for tourney purposes?

Their best OOC win was Lipscomb. They played in the atrocious SEC-West. They were not a good road team. Bad RPI and SOS. People forget that the committee doesn’t have performance in conference tourneys or head-to-head match-ups at the top of the priority list.

I can think of 3 teams better than them in their own conference- Arizona, UCLA, and even USC is outplaying them right now. Not to mention how bad the Pac-10 is this year, it is historically overrated every year, but this year even the biggest fans of this West Coast Conference admit this is not its finest hour, really outside of Arizona, no Pac-10 team has a legit shot of advancing past the sweet 16…And the Pac-10 is notorious for extremely lousy defense and offensive number inflation. I will take Georgia who can play lock down Defense, and shut SEC opponents down to 60 and sometimes 50 points a game…

I thought Bama took out the Dawgs TWICE in the last week?
I think this is a misprint and Bama is dancing?

Nope. They dont base it on two games but the entire season.

And we got this guy coming in next year. # 22 ranked player in the country according to ESPN. Those are the guys we never used to get.

I would also like to take this moment to ask for your support in announcing my candidacy for the Georgia Tech Basketball coaching position, most recently vacated by my colleague Paul Hewitt. The opportunity to tow and abandon Hewitt’s “Ramblin’ Wreck” far from the flats (Green’s on Ponce?), and to sow a new “dream team” on the fertile North Avenue soil is the opportunity of a lifetime. Radakovich has promised me the “automatic” contract for myself and “water girl.”

No, we can not shorten the game to 30 minutes. Fox have good young players. They are just as good or better than the seniors on the team. They have not played enough with the starting five so the flow of the game is missing when you play the younger players. Need to get in the gym this week. Fox need get the young kids mixed in with the starters this week. Get that flow going.

The Dawgs have a good team. The last game against Bama was coaching. He did not rest the starters and he made that bad decision at the end of the game. UGA should have won the game. They missed a lot of free throws because they were tired. It is not easy because he has so many young players but if he manage the game I bet he can get past Washington without a sweat. Most of the good teams play a lot of players. He has the players to go deep. Need to put it together man.

All of these rants and rave about why Georgia shouldn’t have gotten and and why they should…..it make me laugh!!

Look, bottom line……..Your University of Georgia Bulldawgs (and mine as well) are the number 10 seed in the East Regional and you should be DAMN PROUD OF IT!

Yes……I have watched them melt down in PLENTY of games…..enough to make me throw and destroy my remote control from comcast across the room……

But…..as I said in an earlier post…….there are 68 teams going after the same thing that Georgia is going for and this is a new day now. I am sure Coach Fox and the rest of the team know what’s at stake and I am sure they will play like there is no tomorrow, because if they lose there won’t BE a tomorrow!! So, if they lose in the 1st round (I should say 2nd round now with the new format) or should they make a deep run, be PROUD that a team from Georgia is doing something positive!!

And yes Techies……I was there when you guys were at the Alamo Dome for your National Championship Game and I was in full support of you….you should be in full support of your rivals too!! It’s good for your school and your recruiting too if Georgia does well cause we can draw more of them to this state (not Minnesota, but Georgia!)

If the situation arises let’s hope the coaches use better judgment at the end of the game about when to use a timeout. Theri brain freeze at the end of the Alabama game probably cost UGA the game, We have suffered a few frustated losses this year but this one was our own lack of good judgment that resulted in my temper tantrum. It was plain stupidity or temporary insanity that no coach or player called timeout and we took a desperation shot. It would have been better to bounce the ball off one of the Ala players than to heave a wild shot at the basket. Pray for better results in the big tournament. Have a great day.

Congrats to Coach Fox and the ‘Dogs . . . now let’s do some damage in this tournament and prove we belong. No more game ending collapses — we’ve had a lifetime of those in one season already. Alabama needs to focus less on what happened vs. Georgia and more on what happened vs teams that beat them — and by significant margins. Georgia was never blown out of a game this season the way Alabama was on several occasions against lesser opponents and, arguably, UGA really won the tournament game on the last shot in regulation after leading by as many as 14 . . . while Bama trailed throughout most of regulation. I know, final score, but . . . Alabama lucked out on the timeout call just as they lucked out playing Tennessee without UT’s leading scorer. UA barely squeaked by Kentucky at home; got blown out by Florida, Kentucky and others + lowest RPI of all the wannabes. I do like ‘Bama’s Coach Grant, though. UGA “shoulda, woulda, coulda” beat Florida in Athens, ditto Tennessee. I believe our fan base would have been much more energized had we won those two games in Athens vs. Florida and Tennessee.

We are a balanced team that usually has 4-5 guys in double figures each game. We have the 2nd highest scoring offense in college basketball. Our weakness is that the team is a bit of a head case. They’ve lost to teams they should crush. Make no mistake, when they play they way they’re capable, few teams can stay with them. Should be a fun game and good luck!

Big day for Georgia… like Coach Fox said, they did well over the four-month marathon… their body of work was more than just two days at the SEC tournament.

For having a top-40 RPI and a top-40 strength of schedule, for being 7-4 on the road, and either beating some NCAA tourney teams (Kentucky, Tennessee, UAB) and playing dang close to some others (Florida twice, Tennessee, Xavier, Notre Dame in OT), I think the committee saw that this was a complete, well-rounded 10-seed team. I think Georgia deserved to get in and got a decent seed and bracket.

For all the haters: don’t you DARE jump on the bandwagon if we beat Washington! And don’t criticize if we lose to Wash. or UNC… anything after this point is gravy. This is a program that is rebuilding from a terrible 2007, 2008 and 2009 (with 2008’s SEC title nonwithstanding). Even last year was a struggle all year. But this team fought and fought and came together and finally got back to the respectable level. And, I think the committee recognized what kind of league we’re in… anybody notice that FIVE SEC EAST teams made it into the tournament and not ONE from the SEC West?

We don’t need to worry about last year or a month ago or this past Friday or next year… we as fans just need to be happy and thrilled with THIS team for THIS week and focus on THIS next game. I hope a lot of Dog fans make the 3 or 4 hour drive to Charlotte for this weekend… would be great to have a big UGA contingent!

And for some of you SPECIFIC haters: Mark Fox has done a great job with this team… I would say another coach might only get a 17-14 record from this group (we’re not that deep at ALL). So what if we struggled against some top-50 teams? At least we PLAYED them. And oh yeah, we beat Tech and we split with the SEC tourney champs and we beat Big Orange in Knoxville… pretty good year if you ask me!

To the Georgia team: the fans that COUNT are all behind you, 100 percent. Great job on making the tournament… now go get some wins! Good luck guys, and Go Dawgs!

Jeff

11:57 pm

P.S. And for the record, I would have put Bama in instead of Clemson, and I would have found a way to get St. Mary’s in. I don’t think Clemson did enough, and I think Bama should have been in for a 20-win season and a 12-4 SEC record and a run to the semifinals.

For what it’s worth, I also would have LOVED to see Harvard get in… anybody see how they lost to Princeton in that play-in game for the Ivy League title? Heartbreaking… oh, well, that’s what makes March Madness so amazing.

If the dawgs don’t TURNOVER the 1st game I will be surprised. The Ball Handling is not great and the Huskies are FAST. Dawgs will have slow the pace and play half court if they want pt get to the 2nd round.
If we face UNC I am afraid Coach Fox will look like a deer in the headlights. Fox has been in the NCAAs 3 times and made to the 2nd round twice. Facing one of the NCAA kings in the 2nd round will be too much for Fox and the Dawgs. I hope the first game goes well & maybe I can feel a little better about facing UNC. I really don’t see UNC losing in the first round. Somebody said UNC is like 30-1 or something in NCAA games played in the state of North Carolina.

Wilson Dunkit

March 14th, 2011

Unfortunately, the Dawgs will probably “jump around like 7 years olds” when they hit the court against men in the early rounds. Fox has UGA on the right track and I am pleased for them to make the field, but a 10-seed? C’mon man. If UGA is a 10-seed, how could the committee ignore Bama. I don’t have a dog–or elephant–in that fight, but hard to ignore two victories head to head. And VaTech would have taken either team head to head IF they had gotten a fair shake.

Congratulations to Georgia for making the tournament. It’s unfortunate that you’ve been “lucky” enough to be paired with a 7-seeded UW team in the first game. For the Husky faithful, anything less than the Sweet 16 will be somewhat of a disappointing season based on the expectations of what the UW team is capable of. This season is already something of a disappointment having managed only a 3rd place finish in the Pac-10 and a 7 seed. Winning the Pac-10 conference tournament has improved the mood of our fanbase quite a bit, and I apologize in advance for any muckrakers coming over here spouting off about how great UW is etc. Most (including myself) fully expect UW to prevail in this match-up. The Washington season will be considered a failure for many if they don’t win this game.

Great job, Dawgs and coach Fox!

To all here who say the Bulldogs will choke, lose etc, the first game, shame on you if you profess to be a “fan”. You’re also obviously the same “fans” calling for coach Fox’s head after only two years. And, it’s obvious you know squat about BB.

Talk about this team going thru some adversity, I remember the Vandy and Arkansas games, for instance. They weren’t able to get to those games until game day; and both were two days of travel. Not a single whine from the team nor coach Fox. They got thru the early games without Thompkins; Thompkins played hurt much of the season. So, okay, list all their faults and how they coulda-shoulda-woulda. With the overall talent level, they overachieved if anything.

IF they lose to the Huskies, I’ll still believe it was a darn good season; considering they were cellar-dwellers just two years ago.

The talk show pundits in Birmingham will NOT stop comparing Alabama and UGA. They fail to recognize that UGA wasn’t even one of the final 6 teams in, not even on the bubble. Its as if all Alabama has to cling to are those wins over Georgia. In reality, that is about all they have to cling to- the rest of their season was garbage. While Georgia was playing Xavier, Notre Dame, and Temple……Alabama was playing Alabama A&M and St. Peters.

Dear Gerald Tinton- You are just another Alabama fan who thinks the entire season can be boiled down to 2 games. Your RPI was 80…..80. Georgia’s was 37. UGA wasn’t even on the bubble, as evidenced by their 10 seed. And before you start talking about UAB, let me remind you that their RPI was also in the 30’s and Alabama’s was 80. Schedules matters.

This has been a fun winter to watch The Hoop Hounds. There is never a dull moment with these guys for sure. But realistically UGA probably has no shot against Washington. They were predicted to be a top 10 team and have struggled in PAC 10 play. However, they got hot at tourney time and now it’s out turn to play them. Great! I heard a couple of talking heads this morning say that Washington will give UNC a very tough 2nd round game because of their scoring ability.

And let me say this…… I saw Shandon Anderson and several other NBAers come thru UGA over the years…….. Leslie and Thomkins need to stay in school. They are NOT NBA ready and would make a huge mistake.

Hey ‘not a Georgia fan’, you’re right about the lack of UGA fan attendance at the SEC tourney, but then when the league schedules Georgia, playing in Atlanta, for the 1 PM games on both Thursday and Friday (remember, all the other teams fans were already here anyway – you have to buy the entire package of tickets – our folks, like me, were hoping to ’score’ some ducats from others that were ‘headed home’ for the weekend…as it turned out that was us.)…anyway, that’s what happens.

Hopefully, we’ll show up in Charlotte – surely we’ll out do the Washington fans – and probably will get some support from the UNC fans that we’ll have to play next if we move on (they’ll rather play us than the Huskies…be careful what you wish for Tarheels).

Even if UGA comes out fast, they’re not going to out run the Huskies. UW played lightening fast all season long and are in great shape. If UGA can keep it close, the Huskies, in almost every single game, give up a ~10pt run in the 2nd half. They’ve been doing it a few years now. I’ve watched a few UGA games and almost all UW games. UGA plays sloppy and if they don’t care of the ball, the UW D will be too much. BUT, it’s not called March Madness for nothing so who really knows.

Bama also won 13 games vs UGA’s 10. In the oocc schedule UGA beat Colorado and UAB but lost the rest against quality teams. It really does not make since.

A little game analysis from a Husky.

Havent’t watched you guys much but from what I can gather youre team is pretty much all Thompkins and Leslie on the offensive end. Thompkins seems like a pure post up guy. I think the Huskies will be able to handle him fairly well. We have a 7 footer in N’Diaye who really clogs up the middle and averages 1.2 Blocks in just 17 minutes per game. Matthew Bryan-Ammaning is also a very athletic defender with a 7-6″ Wingspan. The Huskies have faced some tremendous post players in UCLA’s Smith and Arizona’s Williams and they were able to neutralize them fairly well. The Weakness with our big guys is their tendancy to get in foul trouble. If Georgia can get them on the Bench with early fouls Thompkins will realy be able to get some things done because we lack depth in the Front Court.

Your other key player Leslie seems to be mostly a slasher who gets things done off the dribble and not much of an outside shooter. This is where Washingtons Athleticism and Depth will really come into play. Washington has 4 Wings in Holliday, Ross, Suggs and Wilcox who are all 6-5 to 6-6, long and very athletic. Not Many teams have had Sucess off the dribble against this rotation of guys.

When have been beat it is almost always by outside shooters Like Thompson from Washington State. Other than Ware (who seems to have games where he totally disapears) You don’t really have anyone one who can shoot from outside and you don’t really take many threes anyway. This will allow the Huskies to drop into more Zone and clog up the middle even more against. I don’t think Georgia will win this game unless ware is hitting a bunch of shots from outside.

Your Weakness offensively seems to be ball handling, turnovers and composure. This is where I would be the most concerned if I was Georgia. The Huskies play tenacious defense and often jump into the full Court Press. Venoy Overton is about as pesky of a defender as you will ever see and he will get right up in your grill way beyond the 3 pt line and pick your pocket. The Huskies like to run and they score a lot of points in the transition game. If the Huskies throw that pressure at Georgia early and get them off of their offensive game plan it could be a long night for Georgia.

On the other end of the Floor The Huskies are a fairly well ballanced Team. Isaiah Thomas is the focal point of the offense. He is an amazing penetrator for his size and has turned into a very good assist man as well. You will need to keep him out of the paint which is easier said than done. The best way that teams have done it is by throwing a lot of Zone at us. We had a stretch where we couldn’t seem to score against the Zone but we seemed to solve that in The Pac-10 Tourney. Obviously alot of the ability to beat the Zone will depend on our outside shooters. Wilcox, Suggs and Holliday are our best outside shooters and have made as many 3’s between them as Georgias entire team. Thomas and Ross have another 100 3 pointers between them. Often time the Huskies rely too much on the three pointer and the games we have lost you will see a direct coralation to 3pt%.

Matthew Bryan-Ammaning has some impressive numbers in the post but he is probabbly the most frustrating player on the team. He has very good footwork is quick and atletic and is able to create his own quality shots consistanly but the guy is the worst shooter from within 3 feet that I have ever seen. He misses so many Layins and gimmes. I would say that if you have a player who can at least keep a hand in his face you should be able to neutralize his scoring. Our Other big Guy N’Diaye has hands of stone and is not much of a threat offensively.

Overall I think that the Huskies with their 9 deep rotation and their Raw athleticism will be too much for Georgia to Handle. My Prediction

Washington 80
Georgia 67

Keys for Ga….

Dawgs need to attack the offensive glass FOR 40 MINUTES!….get there bigs in foul trouble as they zone against us for most of the game.

Defensively….limit there offensive rebounds. Gerald Robinson needs to use extreme defensive pressure against there perimeter shooters. If he fouls out before the 10 minute mark then Ga wont be exposed to his sloppy 2nd half ball handling.

But I will say this….in the 1st half Robinson can be a real gamer. I would not want to go into battle without him.

Trey and Leslie must exert there pre NBA caliber influence. No more closeup missed shots for Price as he will be open underneath for most of the game.

That ought to do it…..
