A new job for UGA grad assistant who coached in bowl (and other notes)
5:00 am March 12, 2011, by Tim Tucker
Emptying the notebook to start the weekend:

Hartley
- You remember Todd Hartley, one of the two UGA football graduate assistants who famously filled in as interim defensive coaches for the 2009 Independence Bowl after Mark Richt fired three coaches. Marshall University officially named Hartley to its coaching staff on Friday. He’ll coach safeties. The Georgia staff has known for several weeks that Marshall was hiring Hartley, who returned to G.A. duties at UGA after Richt hired new defensive coaches. Hartley, a Gray, Ga., native, graduated from UGA in 2008; he and his wife have a four-month-old son.
- Published heights and weights of athletes are not always reliable, but Georgia’s spring football roster, released this week, shows some substantial weight gains from the Liberty Bowl roster. Changes in Georgia’s strength and conditioning program took effect after the bowl. Four linemen are showing gains of 20-plus pounds: defensive lineman Kwame Geathers (from 325 to 350) and offensive linemen Cordy Glenn (from 320 to 348), A.J. Harmon (320 to 345) and Kenarious Gates (307 to 328).
- The NCAA requires all Division I athletics programs to go through a detailed and rather arduous “recertification” process every 10 years. The self-study and peer-review process includes examinations of athletics program governance, compliance with NCAA rules, academic integrity and support, gender equity and diversity. Georgia was among 26 institutions whose recertification was announced by the NCAA this week.
- Been there. Done that. That was Kentucky coach John Calipari’s reaction to Georgia coach Mark Fox calling a timeout just before Dustin Ware made what would have been the game-winning shot against Alabama in the SEC quarterfinals Friday. “I’ve been there where I’ve called a timeout and the kid makes the shot,” Calipari said. “I’ve been there. I’ve done that. Because you are just going by feel: ‘I don’t like what I see here; I don’t like what we’re going to get.’ I did it at South Carolina a year ago on a play. We made the basket, and they’re looking at me: ‘You called a timeout.’ ‘I didn’t think you were going to make it or I wouldn’t have called the timeout.’ And that’s how Georgia loses, right?” (Click here for the full story on Georgia’s untimely timeout and unclear NCAA prospects.)

I’m not even a basketball fan but Fox has me paying attention where I wasn’t before. We weren’t even mentioned a few years ago and now we are.
The weight gains are great but I really hope the majority of it is muscle. One can only gain so much muscle weight per week. Everyone in the Country knows what is going to happen at UGA after the 2011 season if it is anything less than stellar!

A twenty win season doesn’t quantify one as a great coach as Jim Harrick had plenty of 20 win seasons but no morals, Felton won a Sec tournament but was not a great coach. Fox hasn’t done as much as Hugh Durham did for UGA, so i would hold off all the plautitudes until he comes close to what Durham did. He is a good coach(Fox), but the word great is being thrown around like he has accomplished something already. He hasn’t yet, but maybe he will some day! Or maybe not, it remains to be seen!

From what I’ve read about the new strength and conditioning coach at UGA, this is very exciting news. Especially concerning the linemen. Games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage and a bigger, stronger line will control the game. I am cautiously optimistic about this season because UGA has the players to great things. The coaching will be what makes us or breaks us. I hope it makes us champions again!

And btw, congratulations to Hartley! New addition to the family and a great start to what I’m sure will be a promising career. An absolute “feel good” story! Best of luck to you. The Bulldog Nation will follow and watch your progress young man.

To all you Bammer and Tech homers talking about coaches gaining weight - who cares!! i believe Bill Parcells, Bill Belicheck, and Charlie Weiss are pretty god coaches and they are rather large. BUT you do have to find something bad to say about UGA at a

good lord! it makes me ill to read posts from “fans” who question the coaching ability of mark fox. i could go on forever, but won’t . . . just a few obvious things. fox is not to blame for the 5-6 missed layups, the 7 or so missed free throws and the handful of pathetic turnovers that our PLAYERS were responsible for in the second half. the guy has a fiery attitude, a solid scheme, and a charismatic recruiting style. i mean get real! we are developing a legit b ball program for the first time in years. to all the muck raking nay saying fans out there: i know it is hard to logically analyze a situation when you never made it out of high school, so go “support” another school that you did not attend.

Mark Fox is a great coach. He is good for this program and he will continue to build from this season. He made a bad decision calling the timeout but, everyone makes a bad decision sometimes. He will learn from his misstakes just like everyone else does. He will continue to recruit the players needed for his type of team but, I do think the team needs to be more aggressive and smarter on the court. We still have a long ways to go but, we will get there with coach Fox. Go Dawgs!!!!!!

Right On!!!! Richt has done a lot for UGA. He will have the Dawgs back in contention for SEC title in 2011. I remember the 17 years between Hershel and Richt. Richt has brought us back.

Let’s see here, Kwamee Gathers back-up nose tackle, 6ft.6in. 350lb……..now how big did they say big John Jenkins the juco nt who is expected to start is?………Wow ! now if I’m not mistaken, Boise St. will be trotting out a center that goes roughly 5ft.10iin. to 6ft. tall and 260lbs. to 275lbs. I like our chances stuffing-up the middle against them, and every one else we play……..not to mention, Boise graduated all of their recievers that were worth a hoot………me thinks Kellen Moore might get a little jittery under center………..I like this new strenghth and conditioning program.

They must have that “7 out of 8 years” posted on the wall of the tech freshman dorm. They see it on the way home from nerd class and go straight to the UGA blogs every afternoon.

Why is it that they get an ugly liberal ( Julianne Moore ) to play a pretty conservative ( Sarah Palin ).
At least the comparatively ugly Tina Fey has dark hair and similar features.
If I were a conspiracy theorist I would surmise that it was but another attempt to further demonize Palin, who is actually very bright but has been portrayed otherwise by the liberal elitist press and their counterparts in the entertainment industry.

Maybe Sarah Palin should keep her mouth closed and people probably wouldn’t think that she was dumb. Yeah, Yeah blame the media for quoting her brilliant remarks!

The questions is can Grantham and the new LB Coach supply enough discipline for both sides of the ball ? If so then UGA could have a decent year.
You need to pay close attention to the street agent deal at Oregon folks because it’s how the slime of college football is operating. Auburn and Oregon are the elite in this slime. If the NCAA allows Oregon to walk on these payments then all other teams will take it as a green light to get into the game as well. The arrest of the Auburn players will get even better this coming week. The Auburn AD dept is having to work overtime to keep the lid on this story. Karma is a batch AU. The cow college is so deserving of all that is about to fall upon them.

Amen, Boise Dawg, Lagdawg, Millennium Falcons and I’m Georgia. (And almost an “amen” to DSGD, but your post was mostly unintelligible.) Coach Fox has already turned it around, compared to before he arrived. Heck, we hadn’t even been to the NIT much before him….
Lordy, looks like some of the linemen are gonna be beasts, if those weight gains are true.
Congrats to Mr Hartley. Good luck!

T@rd Roll; We neither need nor want your kindergarten opinion and comments. Why don’t you snuggle up with Saban and see if you can find out who was driving the bus when Utah spattered Tide a$$ all over the field and when y’all lost to the Community Cow College after leading by 28 points. That is where your juvenile opinions belong. I have heard of people that don’t know anything but apparently you don’t even SUSPECT anything.
