Ten players to watch in Bulldogs’ spring football practice

Georgia starts spring football practice on Thursday afternoon. Here are 10 players whose progress, I think, will be particularly interesting to follow from then through the G-Day game on April 16:

1. Alec Ogletree: After starting four games at safety as a true freshman last season, Ogletree moves to inside linebacker, where defensive coordinator Todd Grantham says the former scout.com five-star recruit can be a “unique” talent.

2. Jarvis Jones: One offshoot of Ogletree’s move from safety to inside linebacker is that Jones, who was redshirted last season after transferring from USC, will settle at outside linebacker. It previously was unclear whether he’d play inside or outside.  Big things are expected and needed from him.

3. Bruce Figgins: It’s pretty unusual for a fifth-year senior to make a significant position change, but Figgins’ shift from tight end, perhaps the team’s deepest position, to fullback, perhaps its thinnest, qualifies. He could be a major contributor if he takes to the new spot.

4. Washaun Ealey: He has been Georgia’s leading rusher each of the past two years, but he clearly needs to have a good spring after an inconsistent 2010 season, an off-season suspension and the pending arrival of prized recruit Isaiah Crowell.

5. Ken Malcome: The tailback from Southwest DeKalb was redshirted last season but drew praise for his work on the practice field late in the season. He’ll get a chance this spring to show how he stacks up against the more veteran tailbacks Ealey, Caleb King and Carlton Thomas.

6. Trinton Sturdivant: After missing almost all of the 2008 and 2009 seasons because of knee surgeries, Sturdivant got through last season healthy. He gained more confidence in his health — and more playing time — as the season went along. Now, after briefly considering the NFL draft, he’s back for his senior season at left tackle and a chance to pick up where he left off as a freshman All-American in 2007. He’ll be working with a new offensive line coach this spring, Will Friend.

7. Christian LeMay: A member of the 2011 signing class, the quarterback from North Carolina enrolled in school in January and will participate in spring practice. While there is no doubt Aaron Murray, barring injury, will be the starting quarterback, it’ll be interesting to get a glimpse of LeMay’s potential.

8. Marlon Brown: He caught only 13 passes in his first two seasons at Georgia, but the wide receiver from Memphis –- a much-touted signee in February 2009 — has an opportunity for a starting job as the Bulldogs rebuild the wide receiver corps post-A.J. Green.

9. Kwame Geathers: John Jenkins, the celebrated JUCO nose guard, won’t arrive until summer, and with DeAngelo Tyson’s move to defensive end, Geathers has the stage this spring to show what he can do at the nose.

10. Richard Samuel: He was the Bulldogs’ starting tailback at the beginning of the 2009 season, then was slowed by injury and eventually redshirted after a move to linebacker last year. His progress at inside linebacker bears watching closely this spring.

So … which players, among these or others, will have your attention during spring practice?

UGA DAWGSTER WIFE,
I hope he is special then and can succeed. His story line is indeed opposite from most kids, with the grade situation anyway. Wish him all the luck in the world but I hope he will keep his nose clean. UGA doesn’t have a whole lot of wiggle room, for folks if they get into some hot water this year. I think the AD and HC, have kind of drawn the line in the sand as far as visits to the Police station go.

This time of year, everons is great. One thing that all Dawg fans should try to understand is that weak players don’t get better simply because they played a year. This team had a lot of problems last year and it will take a lot of new blood to improve this year. It may take more than a year to recover from last year.

Dave,

I think with the improvements they have made, they can win 9 games this year. I would think that should be a realistic goal. Unrealistic would be to expect to win the SEC.
If they can beat Boise, which I believe they can, and beat UF and stay competitive with SC, all of the other games look very winnable. Bound to slip up in one of the those other games though. Like you, I think 2012 will be thier breakout year.

Abig GA football fan for many years. But i like many others drank the kool aid way to early last season reading everything that came out of spring practice and what coordinators were saying before the season what they were planning to do with their schemes both offense and defense that never came to reality. This year for sure will wait and see after the first two games to see if I should drink the kool aid. I really hope for the best for this years team and this oof season during the summer if they can stay out of trouble for really senseless stuff that SOME of the players put a big burden on the rest of the team last season. If we as fans go thru that again then i have my doubts for this years team success. Like i have said before lock up the bowl jerseys and ect.

I read on one of the blogs where Caleb King said he was going to take the new kid under his wings… Hey Caleb thanks but no thanks !!!! This team needs a new set of leaders and an infusion of talented new players. I say let the kids play !! I know Jenkins will help, Drew is a beast he’s gonna play and Cromwell too. If the O line performs and we get a wide out to step up and Bobo gets his game on point or CMR calls the plays We have a shot at a 10 win season. Let B. Smith play !!!! Go Dawgs !!!!!!!

With a year under his belt, I would say Murray has got to step up into the leadership role, along with one of the senior linemen we have. I also think that Drew will help keep the new youngsters in line to a certain extent. If Drew starts, he could be a leader right off. If what I have read is true, I don’t think I would be messing up while a member of the team. The AD, I am sure is behind a much less tolerant set of rules than they had last year. I think CMR and especially the DC, will be a lot less tolerant of any violations than last year.

Ok, Let me get this straight a lot of you think that A.J. Green’s success was due to Aaron Murray. I can’t stop laughing about this. If you contribute any other player to A.J. Green’s success it has to be Chris Durham – the 6′5″ guy on the other side that drew coverage. For all of you that love Murray’s scrambling abilities let me let you in on a little secret that every D-coordinator knows – Murray can’t throw from the pocket because he can’t see over the line. The play action failed all year because Murray can’t throw from the pocket. Don’t any of you wonder why we have all this receiving talent at TE yet we can’t seem to hit the seam route? It was there and the receiver’s were open. So before you go throwing praise on a kid that took us to a losing season you should take a long look at Christian LeMay. Bobo maybe a poor play caller, but his critique of Murray early on that he holds the ball too long are right on. Murray holds the ball so long because he can’t see the field to do his check downs until he is out of the pocket. Richt and Bobo’s most successful QB’s are pocket passers. I will be very interested to see how LeMay does this spring.

@ old guy…. I don’t think a true Freshman can pick up everything and be able to contribute immediately. That being said, I think Bobo and CMR should put AM in successful situations if he throw from the pocket. They should customize the offense to fit the talent they have and that includes everyone not just AM . Put B. Smith on the field !!!!! and Go Dawgs

@big o – You are right. I don’t think he can grasp the playbook that A.M. can, but you must be able to put the ball into the play makers hands. If you are going to scale the offense to fit A.M. is it not just as easy to scale the offense for C.M.? Either way you are playing a game of give and take.
