UGA has a team at the top of a national poll.
Georgia’s softball team is ranked No. 1 -– for the first time in school history — in this week’s USA Today/National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll, released Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (10-0) received 16 of 30 first-place votes and moved ahead of previous No. 1 UCLA (9-1). Arizona is ranked No. 3, Florida No. 4 and Alabama No. 5.
Georgia has piled up some impressive statistics on its season-opening 10-game winning streak — outscoring its opponents 87-18, compiling a team batting average of .383 and a team slugging percentage of .652, and holding opponents to a .176 batting average.
Georgia’s softball program finished the past two seasons ranked in the nation’s top five -– No. 4 in 2009 and No. 3 last season. The Bulldogs opened this season at No. 3 and climbed to No. 2 after the first week of the season.
Georgia next plays in a tournament in Cathedral City, Calif. The Bulldogs will face No. 19 Oklahoma State and No. 6 Oklahoma on Thursday, No. 24 Texas A&M and Oregon State on Friday, and No. 3 Arizona on Saturday.

While a #1 ranking is great for The UGA the Lady Diamond DAWGS, I think we will get a much better guage on where they stand after this next tournament when the competition get much tougher. Would love to see them go all of the way!!

and I’ll bet that Murray’s ankle is worse than is being reported publicly. Richt couldn’t take another hit, so it’s just sprained. I’ll bet $50 that he’s on crutches for at least 3 weeks (time enough for a fracture to heal)

@rduck: The NCAA does not recognize a Division 1 football champion. Thus, those championships are not counted as official “NCAA Team Championships.” Therefore, the Women’s Tennis championship is the only NCAA team championship GT has ever won. This technically makes AFDawg correct.

If you’ve never seem big time fast pitch softball, it is something you need to see. Some of these young ladies can run a softball up there that is the equivalent to a 90-95 mile per fastball AND, they are doing it from a flat surface and only 40 feet away. Very impressive!

130+SEC championships, 30+ National titles in 8 different sports.
Goldenrod does make a good point, inadvertently I’m sure- UGA has one of the strongest women’s sports programs in the nation with multiple national championships in gymnastics, tennis, and swimming. NC in golf, and hopefully Lady Dogs softball this year.

Other than female gymnastics…the current fast pitch softball team and perhaps women’s tennis when has Georgia ever been #1 in anything male related? I keep hearing 1980…I was -20 at that time. Were the polls even around then? Wasn’t old Vince Dooley the coach then??? How many coaches ago? Women sports are about the only programs at UGA that consistently win even though the football team gets better recruits. Maybe we should only allow athletic money to go toward sports that prove they can handle competition. We certainly don’t lose to Florida!!!

Good luck girls look foward to watching you in the college world series. I wish more of your games were televised. I love watching the men and women college world series. The state of GA puts out so many athletes we should be highly competitive in every sport. The softball world series have some good looking women too. Being No. 1 is nothing new to the University of Georgia. In recent years we’ve had the No. 1 team or individual in football, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s swimming and diving (and I think men’s also), equestrian … and now it’ women’s softball. And it won’t be long before we have No. 1 in men’s basketall. It really is great to be a Bulldog! PS: And I didn’t mention party school!

It’s embarrassing to be talking about girls softball instead of football, basketball and baseball. Adams shouldn’t have fired him a few years ago and needs to get him back aSAP with some big money.
