QB Murray’s injury diagnosed: ‘just a little sprain,’ he says

(Updated 7:20 p.m.)

Bulldog Nation received a major scare Monday when word spread that Aaron Murray, Georgia’s starting quarterback, was spotted on campus on crutches. Before long, rumors snowballed of a possible broken leg or ankle.

Turns out, Murray had only sprained his right ankle and should be able to participate in spring football practice next month, UGA announced late Monday afternoon.

The injury occurred during a pick-up soccer game on campus on Saturday.

Murray was examined by team physicians, and X-rays were negative. An MRI on Monday afternoon confirmed the sprain diagnosis, UGA said.

“Thanks for all the prayers and concerns,” Murray said via Twitter, “but it’s just a little sprain and I’ll be up and going in no time.”

According to Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson, Murray will rehab the ankle under the supervision of the sports medicine staff and is expected to be available for spring practice, which starts March 10.

If the ankle isn’t fully healed by then, Murray could benefit from an unusual schedule that has 11 off days between the Bulldogs’ first and second sessions of spring practice. The second practice is on March 22, following UGA’s spring break. Spring practice runs until April 16, when the annual G-Day intra-squad game will be played in Sanford Stadium.

Murray was one of the few bright spots in a 2010 season that saw Georgia post its first losing record (6-7) in 14 years.

Starting all 13 games as a redshirt freshman, he passed for 3,049 yards, the second most by a freshman in SEC history, and 24 touchdowns, tied for the second most by any player in UGA history. His pass efficiency rating of 154.48 ranked No. 14 nationally, No. 1 among freshmen.

Georgia has two other scholarship quarterbacks in its program: rising sophomore Hutson Mason, who played sparingly as Murray’s backup last season, and freshman Christian LeMay, who enrolled last month.

What we witnessed today is a PRIME example of how the internet snowballs a rumor before we know it.

But I think I know who started the rumor in the first place…….

Glad to see that was it. Can’t keep an 19 year old from going out and playing any kind of pick up game. That would be asking a bit much. I look forward to seeing him in a leadership role this coming season! Go Dawgs!

Good news. We will need that experience to start off the season. Had a pretty good Fresheman season, stat wise. Should have a better season if the playmakers step up and with better play calling. Players need to be very careful during the off season. Careers have been lost from freak accidents. Get well soon. Those ankle injuries can last longer than expected.

You have got to be kidding me, A SOCCER GAME. Give me a break. These kids are in school on a full paid football scholarship and they would jeopardize their duty to the school and teammates by playing SOCCER with a bunch of friends. I guess he was drunk at the time also. Get your heads out guys.

I have to commend the AJC for not rushing to publish news that has not been validated like some of the sources out there. His ankle broken in two places is right up there with Gore winning Florida in the 2000 presidential election.

Daisy Mae – not sure what you did when you were 19, but any kid that is active in sports will play in a couple pickup games every now and then. Heck, I went to college on a baseball scholly, but I remember many times playing a basketball pickup game with our assistant coach. Get off the kids back beause he is just……. a kid!

As I set here I Alaska I am wondering why everyone is complaining about this young kid playing soccer. I played soccer at the same time I was running that pig skin for the Bear at BAMA. It makes me feel good that someone is following after my lead. I live in Calhoun and find it hard to get to the games but I will be at everyone this coming year in support of Aaron and the rest of the team. I actually feel a part of this Bulldog tradition now.

So glad that it was only an ankle sprain, and as a result of an athletic event, rather than an off the field, late-night event that involved mood-changing substances that occured way after midnight. Anybody and everybody has read of enough of those to last four life times. I had feared for the worst, so an ankle sprain is GOOD news!

Murray is an intelligent guy and injuries happen he could just as easily get injured not playing a sport I believe he has earned the right to take a break and play around in the offseason!
