QB Murray’s injury diagnosed: ‘just a little sprain,’ he says

(Updated 7:20 p.m.)

Bulldog Nation received a major scare Monday when word spread that Aaron Murray, Georgia’s starting quarterback, was spotted on campus on crutches. Before long, rumors snowballed of a possible broken leg or ankle.

Turns out, Murray had only sprained his right ankle and should be able to participate in spring football practice next month, UGA announced late Monday afternoon.

The injury occurred during a pick-up soccer game on campus on Saturday.

Murray was examined by team physicians, and X-rays were negative. An MRI on Monday afternoon confirmed the sprain diagnosis, UGA said.

“Thanks for all the prayers and concerns,” Murray said via Twitter, “but it’s just a little sprain and I’ll be up and going in no time.”

According to Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson, Murray will rehab the ankle under the supervision of the sports medicine staff and is expected to be available for spring practice, which starts March 10.

If the ankle isn’t fully healed by then, Murray could benefit from an unusual schedule that has 11 off days between the Bulldogs’ first and second sessions of spring practice. The second practice is on March 22, following UGA’s spring break. Spring practice runs until April 16, when the annual G-Day intra-squad game will be played in Sanford Stadium.

Murray was one of the few bright spots in a 2010 season that saw Georgia post its first losing record (6-7) in 14 years.

Starting all 13 games as a redshirt freshman, he passed for 3,049 yards, the second most by a freshman in SEC history, and 24 touchdowns, tied for the second most by any player in UGA history. His pass efficiency rating of 154.48 ranked No. 14 nationally, No. 1 among freshmen.

Georgia has two other scholarship quarterbacks in its program: rising sophomore Hutson Mason, who played sparingly as Murray’s backup last season, and freshman Christian LeMay, who enrolled last month.

Rough weekend Three Baseball loses nd a starting QB with a sprained ankle. Just some Baseball jabber. I sure was hoping for a big turn around after last years horrible year. Zack Cone supposed to be second team All American, what did he do this week end. Is David Perno on the Hot Seat. I am a true Diamond Dog Fan. Sure would like to see them make the SEC tournament.

My goodness could we please stop saying the term “Bulldog Nation” Possibly the most idiotic term ever. In order to classify as a “nation”, one must have fans outside the south. No one outside of the southeast region gives a rip about Georgia and the majority of their fans are in Georgia. Also, in order to classify as “nation”, one must win their conference more than twice in the past 30 years. Same stuff every year with you people. Hilarious. Let me guess….you don’t see any reason why UGA shouldn’t be undefeated going into the Florida game right? If Jenkins pans out you should win the SEC? LOL. UGA goes 8-4 and that is only because their schedule is favorable.

No

“No one outside of the southeast region gives a rip about Georgia and the majority of their fans are in Georgia.”

No one inside the southeast region or the state of Georgia cares, trust me. Go Buckeyes, Broncos…yawn.

“Also, in order to classify as “nation”, one must win their conference more than twice in the past 30 years.”

Yeah, ok, whatever.

Glad to hear it’s nothing serious. And for you Dawg fans out there that are hoping to see LeMay or Mason instead of Murray next year, please put down the pipe. Murray was one of the rare few highlights of last year and if you paid attention at all you have to be excited to see the kid with one more year of maturity under his belt. Granted he made mistakes — some extremely crucial when the timing couldn’t have been worse — but he also showed the ability to be a gamer, to play smart, be a leader etc. He has the “intangibles” or whatever you want to call it — just let him grow up a bit and he’ll be very tough to beat. Next year he’ll be a seasoned leader and frankly I bet we see as good of a 2nd year QB as Stafford in 07 or Greene in 02.

After a couple of losses by murray, Lemay will be the starting QB for the Dawgs—mark it down! Lemay is the real deal. Murray’s too slow to avoid the rush.

I have no doubt that LeMay will be a stud. But he should be given a year as the backup to learn the system and mature before being given the reins. Next year is Murray’s time to prove himself worthy of returning for a 3rd year or letting LeMay take over.

…and I want to add that contrary to recent opinion regarding red shirting — if Mason instills enough confidence to be the back up, I say throw the shirt on LeMay next year. That way, if Murray does rise to the occasion and wants to return, at worst you have 3 years of eligibility for LeMay.

I see all of these Lemay lovers out here. I wonder what they are basing there opinions on. He didnt play his senior season. He got in trouble his junior year. and has never taken a snap in an NCAA game. If you are basing it on films, then look at 50 other guys films and they all look like studs. If you are basing it on stats from HS then Mason should be playing for NFL. Reality is he is unproven young and may or may not pan out. Murray and Mason have earned there spots on practice and playing fields. For every 10 HS studs there are 1 or 2 who pan out, Quit crowning a king before he has earned his crown.

You’d think with all those Grass Turf Management majors at UGA, this tragedy could have been avoided.

UGA just released the injury report:

Aaron Murray. Out indefinitely due to unspecified injury. Our sources, however, have narrowed it down to split ends, dry scalp, or if doctors’ worst fears are realized, both.

How dumb can you be. Robert Edward’s killed his NFL career before it had even gotten started good playing in a pick-up game on the beach. No excuses come August and if it seem’s Murray is slower even by a nano second I hope that CMR has worked LeMay hard and often enough so someone that really want to take being QB at Georgia serious.
There are too sport’s someone that rely’s on their running and scrambling ability just can not play for fun as much as you want to. BASKETBALL AND SOCCER.. I have seen the most injuries on the legs, ankles and feet playing pick-up game with both of these sport’s. Murray need’s to be able to play at 120% this spring and I hope that CMR chewed his a## for this genius act.

Just like in the fall, the beginning of spring practice requires 3 “acclimation” days, per NCAA rule. Shorts, helmets, and jerseys (with no pads) the first 2 days, then what we call a shells practice on the 3rd day (shoulder pads & helmets w/ no leg pads in shorts). The 4th day is the beginning of full drills where people can be tackled to the ground.

That is another reason to get one of those practices out of the way before Spring Break. There’s only so much that can be accomplised on the acclimation days.

Ok, so what if a QB who led his team to a 7 loss season where Murray failed to compete and win against any teams with winning records (Idaho State doesn’t count as a quality win, sorry) tweaks an ankle? Doers that mean disaster? Hardly. Many of us Georgia fans are reay for someone NEW at QB.

Florida fans come on here saying “Please keep Murray, he’s great, what a terrfic season”.

Yeah, we’re on to your plan Florida fans. Of course you want to keep Murray as the QB, he committed 4 to’s against you, and gave the game away and couldn’t compete with a good team.

Actually, Edwards was not injured at a “pick up game at the beach”. It was at the beach, but he was injured in an event condoned by the NFL, organized by the Pro Bowl for him and others to participate in. If anything THAT particular example shows why it’s silly to condemn Murray for this one. Unless the point is that atheletes as a whole need to refrain from any sort of physical activities.
