Georgia confirms hire of Olivadotti as inside linebackers coach

Georgia made it official Friday morning, naming Washington Redskins assistant coach Kirk Olivadotti as the Bulldogs’ new inside linebackers coach.

The hire had been expected for a couple of days, pending the completion of a pre-employment background check.

“In hiring an assistant, we look for someone who first is at the top level in football knowledge and competency,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement announcing the hire. “Then we want someone who is a teacher of the game, [will] be an example for young men, and can serve as a mentor for our student-athletes. We found all those qualities in Kirk.”

Olivadotti called the opportunity “exciting” and thanked Richt “for his confidence in what I can hopefully bring to the program.”

He replaces Warren Belin on the Georgia staff.  Belin left two weeks ago to become the Carolina Panthers’ linebackers coach.

Olivadotti  had been the longest-tenured member of the Redskins’ coaching staff, which he joined in 2000.  At various times since then, he served as a defensive quality control coach, helped coach the special-teams units, the defensive backs and the defensive line,  and more recently served as linebackers coach (2007-09) and defensive assistant (2010).

Olivadotti, 37, began his coaching career on the college level at Maine Maritime in 1997. He was an assistant coach at Indiana State in 1998-99.

He has undergraduate and master’s degrees in education and education administration, respectively, from Purdue, where he played wide receiver from 1993-96. His father is Tom Olivadotti, a long-time NFL defensive coach with the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants and Houston Texans.

Olivadotti is the second assistant hired by Richt this month. Will Friend, formerly at UAB, was hired as offensive line coach, replacing Stacy Searels, who left for Texas.

Special teams will struggle again from losing Belin, but Iniside Linebackers should be better with Olivadotti’s singular focus.

@ Joe youre right there but I’d give up some on special teams for good LB play. I think we can have any coach drill into them to stay in their lanes, maintain containment and don’t block in the back. If they do that, I’ll take my chances.

Welcome aboard the U.S.S. Titanic, where Richt loses more games than the year before 7 out of 8 of the last 8 seasons. Looking at a 4 or 5 win season. Current losing trend:

11 wins in 2007, down to 10 in 2008, down to 8 in 2009, down to 6 in 2010.

I’ll give you we have stunk it up to UF the past 20 years, but 9 out of 10 against Tech, 4 out of 5 against AU, 3 out of 4 against Bama…I’ll take that record.
We never claimed we were missing a piece last year. We needed a new DC and got one, but he didn’t have his players and it was the first year. I said on here many times it would take him 2-3 years to get his players and system fully in place (many of those needs were addressed earlier this month on NSD). As for offense, we didn’t know what we had in a RS Fresh QB, but I think that experiment turned out pretty well. Regardless of how this season goes, I’ll send in my check next February and I’ll be yelling Go Dawgs Go from the 20 yard line.

How does anyone know if Special Teams will struggle at this point? That is an idiotic statement. They return AGAIN the best tandem kickers in the nation. That along STRENGTHENS the special teams. Some people just cannot look at a glass half full…

Wherever, we can find a spot. I don’t have the big $$$$$ to be able to afford a parking space. We usually find a spot over in the newer development at East Campus!

Georgia fell from 8 wins in 2009 down to 6 wins in 2010 after hiring 3 new defensive coaches. Not unusual for Richt, 7 out of 8 last seasons, Richt wins less than the year before. Wonder how far the fall will be in 2011, 4 or 5 wins in 2011?

87% chance Georgia wins less than 6 games, look at last 8 seasons, gets less wins 7 out of 8.

yeah Adams is trying to shut East Campus down too. My friend pays $150 or so for the season to park at beat the bookstore on Baxter. It is just 4 blocks from the stadium and he has his parking spot from close of business on Friday until whenever as long as he is gone by Monday morning. I usually park in Hull Street Deck. I don’t have a parking pass but my friends do and I tailgate with them. Drop my stuff off and drive the three blocks to park and go from there.

Haters like Trey say 6-7 is the basis for doom and gloom.

I say 96 wins in 10 years.
I say 2 SEC titles after a 20 YEAR DROUGHT
I say more Top Ten rankings than any other coach in UGA history.

I say Richt rebounds in 2011 and his 2012 team may be his best ever.

What is the story on Lonnie Outlaw? He played for GMC last season and was supposed to come to Georgia this season. He is an outstanding WR. Did he not make the grades? I have looked everywhere to find out something about him. He would be a good addition.
