Big basketball game in Athens tonight, Georgia vs. Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. It’s big for Georgia because:
———-
Lost in the shuffle of Saturday’s crazy game at South Carolina is that the victory assured Georgia a winning road record — a feat that definitely should be noted in the context of recent history.
Georgia is 6-2 on the road this season — a dramatic turnaround from its 0-11 road record last season, 2-28 over the past three seasons and 8-63 over the past seven seasons.
Georgia hasn’t had a winning record on the road since the 2002 team went 6-5. This season’s three remaining road games are Saturday at Tennessee, Feb. 24 at Florida and March 5 at Alabama.
———-
Vanderbilt shooting guard John Jenkins was the SEC Player of the Week after averaging 26 points in two games last week, including a career-high 32 in Saturday’s victory over Kentucky.
Asked Tuesday how the Bulldogs would defend Jenkins, coach Mark Fox said: “Oh, my gosh, guard him with six guys?”
Jenkins, a sophomore, is the SEC’s leading scorer at 19.8 points per game.
“He’s terrific, having a phenomenal year,” Fox said.
———-
And if you missed it, here’s a story I wrote for today’s paper sizing up Georgia’s position on the NCAA tournament bubble, which isn’t a bad place to be after the past few years.

As far as I’m concerned, Fox is on the bubble. After last year’s predicted record, everyone was saying GA was poised to do something outstanding this year. Well, I’m still skeptical. If he has the goods, it’s time to show it with a few critical wins.

Fair and balanced – if you can’t see the improvement in UGA’s men’s basketball team, because of Mark Fox, you are not paying enough attention. Road record improved. Standings improved. The home seats are filled. Players and most fans attitudes improved. Only you have said something this ignorant.

Fox on the bubble? He has two and one-half, maybe three legit starters. Thompkins being hurt early in the season and banged up lately has hurt his performance. In turn, has hurt the team.

The only bubble involved with UGA basketball is NCAA-related. Tonight will be a huge win…if we get it.

“FAIR AND BALANCED” woke up this morning, rolled over, nudged “FLYNN” and said “Flynn, you can type your comments after me.” Their perception of Mark Fox and Georgia Basketball as it stands today is way out of whack.
Georgia is 6 – 2 on the road, after going 0 – 11 last season and 8 – 63 over the last seven seasons. Fox has proved so far that he can change perception, culture, and attitude. This team is on the NCAA bubble; when last year they were not even close to an invite.
Fox can coach. It appears as though he can recruit well too. The team is 17 – 7…and last I checked, Fox had no control over the non-call at the end of the Tennessee game or the hail-mary three point shot in the Florida game. Two games that could have easily gone our way. Also, a few losses early without Trey Thompkins could have been different had he been available.
Flynn and Fair and Balanced need to go sit down and put their heads on their desks and clear out the cobwebs before typing again.

I’ve been saying for a while now that this UGA team is bound for a 2nd round SEC Tourney loss, and a NIT Sweet 16 capping off an “improvement year”.
Travis Leslie will deservedly go pro early over the offseason, and unfortunately Trey Tompkins will go pro prematurely, never to be seen again unless you follow Euro-League basketball. Trey really needs to look at his film trying to guard Florida’s Vernon Macklin, and realize if he goes to the NBA, there will be many, many players larger and better than Vernon, who made Trey look like a High Schooler.
If Trey stays, this team will only get better next season. He leaves, and we will be back to square one in Winter November 2011.

Time for a reality check for UGA b.b fans. The road wins have come against Tech, S.C, Ark. Mercer. Haven’t beaten a team with winning conference record on the road. So don’t get to excited about Fox and his team. You will see the real UGA team when it goes on the road against teams with .500 or better conference records, Bama, Tenn, and Fl. You will see an 0-3 in those games, yet everyone is talking about what a great turnaround Fox is doing this year. The only reason UGA has a winning conference record is because the Western Division is God AWFUL this season. Uga has beaten Ark, Auburn, Miss, &Miss.St from the west, and Kentucky&S.C from the east. None of these teams have a winning conference record. So stop drinking the coolaid and be realistic. This team hasn’t beaten a good conference team this year, and it want beat one this year. You can count of losses to Bama, Tenn.Fl& Vandy. They will not get in the big dance, and they shouldn’t. As a matter of fact, Fox and this team is worse than last year’s team. At least last years team beat Tenn,&Florida at home, and came within the final minute of beating Kentucky on the road. So i would say Fox is overrated, and this will show next year when he has none of Felton’s players left(Leslie, THompkins, Price&Barnes). This coach has shown he can’t recruit in Atlanta or the state of Ga, and it will start to show next year. There are 8 players from the state of Ga. in this year’s top 100, and UGA got one of them. Tenn, got 2, Vandy got one, Tech got one, and Auburn for crying out loud got one. That is pathetic. So Dream on UGA fans, just like in football, UGA can’t win the big conference games.

Who Cares- Georgia has not lost to a West team; every other Sec east team has lost to an SEC west team. You mean UGA is awful losing to two buzzer beaters to UT and UF. UT has horrible losses and UGA has none. UK we beat and they are projected as a 4 seed in the tourney. UGA beat UAB a top 50 win. Georgia is 3-1 on the road in conference play. UGA is tied for second in the East. ” As a matter of fact, Fox and this team is worse than last year’s team.” What kind of statement is this? are you kidding UGA did not even win on the road last year; they have turned that around this year and that is reality…

I am a GT fan and even I think you are a troll and an idiot. UGA has obviously improved under Fox and has a good chance of making the NCAA. It is tough to win conference games on the road, no matter which conference you are in and UGA has a good record away from Athens. On top of that, they have a marquee win over UK. UGA under Fox has a long way to go before anyone will confuse them with UK, Duke, UNC, MSU, Kansas, etc. but they are vastly improved.

Fair and Balanced – don’t let the uninformed and unaware homers get you down. Clearly these folks only knowledge of UGA basketball is that: a) in years gone by (with very few exceptions) UGA men’s basketball has a losing record; and b) this year, UGA men’s basketball has a winning record.
I’m willing to bet that I’m one of very few real UGA men’s baskeball fans who have actually seen every game this year (and I’ll admit it, taped them to re-watch) and while I do appreciate the winning the record and improvement, there are some very real questions about Coach Fox and the team.
Coach’s continued insistence on having JP jump every tip is mystifying to those who have seen UGA lose EVERY tip this year – every one. What is the definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results ? You’d think the man would mix it up at least once just for giggles – not to mention I’m willing to bet both Trey and Travis easily can outjump JP.
His coaching during games at least raises questions – why didn’t he have us foul UF when we were up 3 with 8 seconds to go in the first OT ? Why was the best play we had coming out of a full time out against Auburn at the end of the game was to throw the ball away to Auburn ? And when Auburn scored, why was the team not coached up on what to do in the event this happened ? When Gerald got the ball back after the Auburn basket he dribbled around for a couple of seconds not knowing whether to call a time out or attack the basket.
And who coaches these guys on defense – Spike the inflatable mascot ? Looks like it since Trey, JP, and Chris seldom move their arms and feet (well, that’s not fair. JP does more than his share of reaching – particularly toward the end of games when he’s tired). Which leads to player rotations and development.
Last year he didn’t have a bench so he couldn’t use but six players. This year he recruited Mr. Georgia Basketball and Georgia’s AAAA player of the year, plus got Connor as transfer but do any of them get off the bench ? Connor started the first four games averaging 30 minutes per game while Trey was out with the ankle sprain, then has only had double figure minutes twice…and has been DNP’ed five times. Marcus Thornton averages just under 11 minutes per game and Donte Williams a little less than 7.
Forget the fact that the two freshmen aren’t getting a chance to develop and help out over the next three years, but utilizing them and Connor for more minutes would help to keep his bigs (Trey and JP) fresher and out of foul trouble for the end of the games. Also, if I was a recruit looking to come to UGA I’d be sure to notice that in all likelihood I’d be on the rock for most of next year.
…and a couple of more things – would someone, anyone, please coach Trey on what to do when double teamed ? At least against SC he called timeout the last instead of his usual throw the ball away…and likewise, someone/anyone please coach up Gerald to know what he’s going to do BEFORE he jumps into the air ? I’m thinking sit these guys down for some significant minutes and they might learn to make better choices when they are in the game. JP had some marked improvement (for a while) when Coach started Chris one game.
Don’t get me wrong – I am a UGA alum (class of 78) and want very much for these guys to be successful. I’m choosing to believe that Coach Fox, like the current state of UGA men’s basketball, is young and hopefully learning. I just want them – and Coach Fox – to learn faster from what isn’t working.
Go dawgs !!

Raleigh,
Coach Fox obviously does not believe in fouling at the end of the game when up by 3 since he was screaming at the team to not foul.
The kid threw the ball away against Auburn. Coach Fox didn’t diagram a play designed to commit a turnover.
Thornton is not ready to play significant minutes. There is a reason Calipari didn’t foam at the mouth to get him. He wouldn’t be playing at all in Lexington.
Jump ball? Could it be you want your best athletes CATCHING THE TIP?

Let’s be realistic with this team. They play very hard, but are now just learning how to win. Coach Fox has them moving in the right direction, but it is time for Thompkins to step up and put the team on his back. This is a tall task for any player, but if he wants to be a pick in the top half of the first round he needs to prove he can do it.

Lex – I appreciate your views and feedback…and my two cents for what it’s worth…
So how did Coach’s strategy of NOT fouling work out against UF ?
Actually, the play Coach drew up was for Trey to throw if to T-bird on the break away..when all we needed to do was get the ball inbounded to Dustin to shoot free throws.
It’s hard to get anything going when you’re only playing two minutes at a time and know that you’re coming out at the next TV timeout….in the few games that he’s had several minutes at a stretch, Thornton’s been very good….and from what I hear Thornton is tearning it up in practice…and if he isn’t ready, who is supposed to get him ready ? As a somewhat related response – wasn’t Trey preseason POY ? I thik we can all agree that he hasn’t played like it and who’s job is it to get him to play better ?
Agreed that JP has the worst hands on the team except for Chris, but you’re got to GET the tip BEFORE you have the CHANCE of CATCHING the tip.

As regulars are aware. I watched, in person, virtually high school game Howard ( before I was Trey) Thompkins played his Freshman, Sophmore and Senior years in high school. I am a Howard fan. The kid has so much talent. I said then and say again he needs to toughen up and stop the whining on the court. That hasn’t changed since he as a high scool freshman.
I’ve also paid Vanderbilt tuition for my kid for the last four years. Think that entitles me to root for the ‘Dores too.
Still, good to be a Buckeye, 25-1 and a likely # 1 seed. I see Howard (before I was Trey) Thompkins and Co. are 2-7 against the RIP top 50 and have work to do to make the dance.
Perhaps Howard ( before I was Trey) Thompkins and my boy Sullinger will meet up. Would love to see the match-up.

raleighdawg, thanks for bringing up the opening jump ball problem with Price.
On the dawgvent I brought it up and someone claimed we had won about 6out of 24.
That’s still pitiful.
I asked Coach Fox about it on Mon.and he said Trey’s foot was a problem for him
and that Travis was just too short for him to do it. I say what would it hurt to give Travis
a try.

Apples,
I suspect Howard returned because he knew his draft stock was low. Interesting that Aminu from Wake declared and was what, the # 8 pick?. Did you know Thompkins and Aminu were teamates as freshman? Like I said, I am a Howard fan and making an informed opinion having watch him for 7 years.
Sorry to say, little doubt doubt Sullinger will leave. He’s projected as a top 3, if not # 1 pick. What would you do?
You are correct, It is not an automatic ticket but I like our chances. Do you like yours?

I feel Robinson has to play aggressive on offense but smart. Push tempo when he has the advantage and leave behind the arc shooting to Ware. That goes for Trey also. No silly turnovers on the post entry feed. Get Barnes, Price and Thompkins into a rhythem eary on down low and it should be a cake walk

Jenkins shot his quota Saturday vs UK. He is due for an off night.
UGA got a break going to Gainesville as Chandler Parsons is most likely done for the rest of the season with an injury.
UT is feuding internally on the bench. I was at the UK/UT game and saw Tony Jones shake his head several times at what Pearl was doing. I won’t be surprised if Jones is not the next coach at UT after the NCAA suspends Pearl for a year and the AD runs him.
Sets up well for UGA.

Buckeye do you honestly think if a UGA fan decided to go live in Ohio (promise you that won’t happen), and he decided to frequent the Columbus, OH high school paper and just spew Dawg propaganda all over the place (promise you that won’t happen), that he wouldn’t be met with people who take offense to his garbage and talk smack to him??
So why would it be any different that you coming on here??
I hate to tell you, scout, that people have pride in their alumni and or state school athletics WAY outside the Tree Nut state. You want to come on here and tell us we are nothing and we shouldn’t waste our time having passion that COMPLETELY outweighs yours and your State, and then act appalled that somebody tells you you are an idiot.
Son, we are all Americans. But those of us who take true pride in our Dawgs are Georgian by the true grace of god.

thanks for sharing what Coach had to say about the jump ball situation….although his answer doesn’t make any sense to me (Trey’s foot is too sore to jump an opening tip, but he can play 35 minutes a game ?….and Travis from a standing start can touch the top of the square on the backboard and he’s too short – to paraphrase Tina Turner “what’s short go to do with it” ?) I’m glad to know that someone put it out there….
BTW, I’ve seen every tip and we have no won a single tip although there have been two occurences where the opposing team got the tip, but tipped it toward a UGA player…and in those two occasions I still don’t consider that “winning” the tip.

I actually do like the Dawgs chances come March. The team is athletic, and has a PG who does not turn the ball over. They have a solid backcourt and a plus front court.
Do I think Elite 8? No but a Sweet 16 is definetly capable for this team. All about expectations.
I have seen Ohio State play a few times. They stretch the court defensively, can shoot the ball well from the perimeter, have length so they will advance far.
The lose at Wisconsin, was not that bad a lose. Bo Ryan gets those kids juiced in Madison and they defend the court as good if not better than any team in the nation. I thought a tougher game would have been at Minnesota if the Gophers PG had not been hurt. They essentially forogt about Sampson in the 2nd half, and also credit the D of the Buckeyes.
Again its all about expectations and the Buckeyes will have the bullseye squarely on there backs.

Dawgnlex, then i guess you are an idiot, you words not mine. Because this team has 17 wins due to the fact the preconference schedule this season was like ranked the 140th hardest schedule as it relates to RPI rankings. What OOC team did they beat that was in the top 100 rpi? As a matter of fact, this team is 2 wins and 7 losses against teams in top 50 RPI. Last years team beat 4 teams in top 50 RPI and they beat 5 teams that went to the big dance. Last years team would have won 17 games with this years pre conference schedule. You are typical fan that only looks at record, and doesn’t have a clue when it comes to evaluating a teams performance against good teams. How can anyone say that this year’s team is better against top 50 RPI ranked teams than last year’s team?Or how can anyone say this year’s team is better when they lose all 3 of their home games against top 50 ranked teams, compared to last year’s team that beat all 3 top 50 ranked teams they played at home? I will give you the idiot label that you asked for!!

@ The Voice of Reason (aka: Craig) – I couldn’t agree more. Call me a skeptic here, but I don’t think any truthful and level headed person (not necessarily a fan of UGA or any other team for that matter), can argue that Fox hasn’t done a TREMENDOUS job here.
Despite the trolls who mask themselves as faux-Dawgs or being “Fair and Balanced”, the program has done about a 80% turnaround. Yes we need more quality depth, yes we need to dominate the lesser teams (Side note – in years past we’d lose to those lesser teams), and win more of the games to the great teams than we lose (that’s the recipe for us to be considered a great team). Simple logic tells us that if we do that, we are building an annual contender. But before you can complete the turnaround, you have to go through this process of GROWTH.
We are where we should be at this point and I look forward to this to continue. Sorry Techies and all the other haters, get used to it!

I live in Kentucky where basketball is clearly the king. You called me a typical fan who only looks art records?
Try again Einstein. I have forgotten more college basketball than you will EVER know.
Georgia and every other team’s goal is to make the NCAA tournament. Georgia has not done that lately. They had no chance to do it a year ago. The wins you reference a year ago were offset by numerous losses away and at home where late leads were squandered(Arkansas comes to mind).
This year Georgia is a couple of wins away from being a dead lock for the NCAA’s.
2011 is clearly better than 2010.
In my opinion
In the expert’s opinions.
Most importantly, it will be in the opinion of the NCAA Selection Committee.

Dream on Dawgnlex. You are a legend in your own mind, and your answers prove it. You seem to have a problem comprehending what you read. You can’t believe somebody would challenge your pitiful basketball I.Q., which seems to be about as high as UGA’s winning percentage against top 50 RPI ranked teams. Why is so hard for you to comprehend that last year’s team had a better record against quality opponents, and they had a better record at home against quality opponents, and just because they have a winning record this year will mean nothing because they have but one quality win. You forget they still have 4 of their hardest games coming up, and 3 are on the road. Just so you can understand with your high basketball I.Q, last year’s team beat 5 teams with RPI ranking in top 50, this year’s team has beaten 2, and lost to 5, with 4 more coming up. after they lose those 4, they will have a combined record of 2 wins and 9 losses against top 50 opponents. You are a complete idiot if you think this year’s team is better. The only thing this team has going for it is it’s weakass nonconference schedule. Come back in 2 weeks and brag about your basketball I.Q., because like UGA’s tournament chances it will have gone down.

Dawgs need to recruit basketball players that know how to win – refuse to lose – understand the game is about winning not about them. This bunch is not good – a couple of athletes and a bunch of hacks. Only one PG which is another problem. Fox isn’t the problem – the inability to get kids who can play to come to Athens is. Hopefully this years freshman class and the incoming freshman (i.e. Caldwell) can turn this mess around.

I knew when we were up 13 that we would let them back in the game.

After watching tonight’s sorry excuse for a basketball, I believe the basketball team has come down with Richtitis. Absolutely no motivation. They ran out of steam about halfway through the second half–conditioning? Absolutely dumb play calling and execution. Very lazy defense. Too lazy for any offensive rebounds.
Fox came in with goodwill to burn. He’s recruited well, but if this is all he’s got, we need to put out another recruitement action.
The Bulldog Nation needs to put some pressure on the Board of Regents at this point. Our entire athletics program is in a steep decline. We can’t hang with the better half of the SEC anymore in anything.
If the Bulldog Nation does not demand better coaching across the board, they will not get it with that used car salesman Michael Adams. He has infested the univerisity like a boll weevil.

Too many 3 star recruits on this team right now. But….the 2011 recruiting class looks good with 5 star Pope. Prior to 2011 however….I am sick of UGA getting out recruited. We lost a tough game to Vanderbilt….but they out recruited us over the last 4 years…just look at the rivals numbers.
three 4 star players for us and no 5 stars…..Vanderbilt on the other hand…..about six 4 star players and one 5-star player.
I know Thompkins is great and Leslie is good and underrated. But I for one am sick of getting out recruited by KY…FL…Tenn and Vandy. Is it really the venue that is holding us back? I know the Steg is a small venue.
2011 class looks good…..Fox has got to keep it up and corner the market once and for all with the top talent coming out of Atlanta.
