The ACC released Georgia Tech’s (and other conference teams’) 2011 football schedules this afternoon. So just in case that news has any of you looking around for Georgia’s schedule –- most of you, I know, already have memorized it –- I figured I’d post it here again:
Sept. 3: vs. Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in the Georgia Dome.
Sept. 10: vs. South Carolina in Athens.
Sept. 17: vs. Coastal Carolina in Athens.
Sept. 24: at Ole Miss.
Oct. 1: vs. Mississippi State in Athens.
Oct. 8: at Tennessee.
Oct. 15: at Vanderbilt.
Oct. 29: vs. Florida in Jacksonville.
Nov. 5: vs. New Mexico State in Athens.
Nov. 12: vs. Auburn in Athens.
Nov. 19: vs. Kentucky in Athens.
Nov. 26: at Georgia Tech.
A few things jump out:

Wow… the what have you done for me lately crowd… Every year in the SEC, you have to overcome adversity. Some years its the injury bug (we all remember that but talk to Alabama fans about last year for them). Sometimes you have a magical season, insert Auburn and SC. Is Auburn going to be good next year? Yep. They are Auburn. Are they going to have a magical season? nope. SC? SC had a great turn of fortunes. They happened to be slightly better than they normally are and had the fortune of playing the weakest SEC east that I can ever remember. UF… down, UT… down, UGA… down, UK… below expectations… heck, even Vandy had a down year. I find it humorous that Spurrier languishes at SC for 5 years and then all of a sudden he is “back”. wow.
As for how the season will turn out.
Boise State – win. Sorry, but traveling into a hostile state on the road where you don’t travel well to begin with is going to be a slap down. VT fans are no where near as loud as UGA fans (and we are as loud as others of course). W
SC – This one is a toss up. I believe UGA will be riding high on their win over Boise State and that could spell doom for the game. Having said that, the loss last year, the hype of SC (an unknown for them) this year, and having to play in Athens makes this a you pick em.
Coastal Carolina – W
Ole Miss -W
Miss St – This matchup from last year will be interesting. I believe we will find out whether or not we have a viable D by now. Last year in Starksville, we gave the game away. Look for the team not to do the same this year. W
Tennessee- I see Dooley pulling some Les Miles magic. This game snake bites us because we have a better record than we thought we would have and the Vols have a worse record than they should. Tennesse 27-24. L
Vandy- W
Florida- Even though Muschamp is a proven coordinator and Weis is a proven coordinator, they will struggle in creating the system they need to become dominant again this year. Too much Myer ball over the last 5 years. You have system players for Urban but not for Weis. Look for a W here.
NM State W
Auburn – This is going to be a rub game. I think that Auburn will have the talent to win this game but too much bad taste from last years Fairley fest. Emotion is important and I believe this will equate to a W
Kentucky – Lost too many play makers last year for them to be up this year. W
Ga Tech – Love the techies but the novelty is wearing off of the offense and CPJ does not have the athletes to run his system at a high level. W
Therefore, you can conceivably place UGA at 10-2, 9-3. Having said that, several things could alter that. 1. Injuries to key players — Murray comes to mind or Big Jenkins on the D line. 2. Suspensions/arrests – again a killer for the opening 2 games. 3. We know what we have in the offense with Bobo (and I am not a fan of his play calling by any stretch of the imagination) but we do not know what Grantham will be able to accomplish in year 2. If the 3-4 does not bring UGA’s Defense back to a top 15 D, then of course you could see another long year.

You must not have seen my remarks after the Wisc loss. The kid was on fire in trhe second half. I congratulated him on his performance. The team was .500 from 3 point land and hit 50%. There’s a performance fo you. Still, 24-1 and a likely # 1 seed.

WDE,
As others know, I have lived in ATL for 25 years, pay GA taxes therefore support uga financially – not by choice. I am a sports fan, and support the Buckeyes. I am a big Falcons fan. Braves and Hawks, not so much since the 90′ and Nique/Spud days. I was a Tech fan back in the Cremmins days. I am a Howard ( before he was Trey) Thompkins fan as I watched him in person in nearly every game in high school for 3 of his 4 years ( he spent his Jr. year at Oak Hill in VA in case you didn’t know). Like most football fans, I enjoy SEC football, the rivalries, the story lines. I cried when Uga died. I loved listening to Larry Munson. So, that’s what I’m doing here. Is that good enough for you?
P.S. The 1-9 argument, though not as old as the 0-9 argument, is tired, boring and so yesterday. Just sayin’.

Like I said, I was just curious to know. As for the 1-9 argument, no not so much. I live in Big Ten territory now and all I hear is how the Big 10 is great and the SEC sucks. Some idiot Badger fan actually said that the SEC sucks and Auburn sucks even though Auburn went 14-0 and won the championship. After I went off on him he went on to say that he didn’t even know where Auburn was.
Gotta love stupid people.

Did you watch the game? Wisc will be a tough match-up for ANYBODY in the Tourney. They milk the shot-clock from minute one and have several 6-10 guys who drain threes.
Football, yep. It was a tough loss and not the first time Wisc beat us. Still, a successful season at 12-1 and another BCS win. Wisc. has been more and more of a competitive rivalry that Michigan of late. Hope that turns around for Michigan.

Kind of easy to do when your team only has to play 2 ranked opponents. Imagine if UGA only had to play Florida and LSU. They’d at least beat one of those teams and would probably beat out the rest of the unranked teams. Well, not last year’s UGA squad, but a normal UGA team.

Nah, because all I have to do is point to records/championships and the Big 10 fans usually quiet down.
True story: My wife and I were walking near Wrigley and there are a lot of Big 10 bars around the stadium. We happened to walk by an Iowa bar that was directly across from a Wisconsin bar. Some drunk fans from both bars were yelling “YOU SUCK………NO YOU SUCK!” Anyway, my wife was wearing her UF shirt and I turned her around and yelled “YOU ALL SUCK!” and pointed at her shirt. Not a peep came out of any of them.

Buckeye is just another yankee transplant in Atlanta that is jealous of all the attention heaped on the Dawgs. Clowns like this are a dime a dozen. I have heard several transplants express frustration over the amount of UGA coverage in the Atlanta media. They act all shocked and put out when they move to GEORGIA and see wall to wall coverage of the University of GEORGIA. It simply shocks the conscience how stupid these people are.
Thanks.

With that schedule and the dream team roster, this UGA team will take over the SEC east. Florida will be way down for awhile with all those new coaches and some talent gaps. Usc was a flash in the pan and UT has nothing. Ga should easily win the SEC east and play alabama for the SEC title. These dawgs are back!

WDE,
I agree Pryor and Newton are similar in size, speed and ability to change a game. Newton is a better passer and both played in different offensive systems. I would have liked to have seen an Auburn/Newton – Pryor/OSU match up but it didn’t happen. We didn’t have any problems w/ Mallet.

Well of course I wouldn’t expect you to admit to all that, but its true. You have an unhealthy obsession with the Dawgs. The only explanation is that it drives you crazy that nodody cares anything about your Buckeyes down here and all anybody talks about is the Dawgs. Its the only explantion. I think Ohio State fans in particular are a little full of themselves and think their team is the center of the damn universe because ESPN talks about them a lot. I’m sorry but nobody in the south gives a flying hoot about Ohio State. Not a soul. Just be honest and admit that this bothers you. Thanks.

Realistically,
I see this as being another 6-6 year. For any team to be successful, there has to be a nucleus of talent and leadership in place, where guys completely buy into the system, and then you combine that with younger talent , and you have a winner. Look at 2002: you had strong senior leadership AMONG THE PLAYERS, guys like Boss Bailey, Tony Gilbert, Jon Stincomb etc. Then you combine that with the young talent of David Greene and David Pollack and you have a strong nuclues of guys who are talented and can gut out the close wins. Same can be said for 2005 when you had guys like DJ Shockley, Russ Tanner, Max Jean Giles, who were the leaders combined with the younger guys like Kregg Lumpkin, Thomas Brown etc…and you had a team that surprised people.
But the problem now is that once guys like Stafford and Moreno came in, the vocal point became more about the individual player and their talents and less about “buying in” to UGA. Stafford and Moreno to me represented a generational shift, where the focus of the average player is getting to the NFL not in being a Dawg. And the downside to that is you don’t get the players buying in that you used to. Now when you see UGA play there is NO LEADERSHIP from the players. When things go bad or when the team gets hit in the mouth, there is nobody to rally around. Just a bunch of X-factor guys like AJ Greene making amazing plays, yet the team still loses. Collectively, there is no drive or incentive to be better. And that falls on the coaches AND the players.
And finally, UGA and our fanbase is painstakingly slow in regards to change. Always has been. We kept Wally Butts around even when he was getting his brains beat out by Tech in the 1950’s. We kept Dooley around too long when he probably should have retired after Herschel left. We kept Ray Goff around WAY too long because he was a “Georgia Guy” even though he was a complete joke of a coach. And now we’ll keep Richt around longer than we should. At the very core of who we are, we don’t demand greatness! Period. Having higher expectations is a start. Proactively seeking change is where our athletic department needs to be. UGA is showing me that, as of right now; they’re not looking to get substantially better. So until they make more concentrated efforts in that regard, like AU and UT have; then substandard results is what I will expect.

It must be a miserable life for all the UGA haters to come on the UGA blog and talk about how bad the Dawgs are/will be. UGA was down the last two years but the good news is they still get to play the games this year. If no one thinks they can turn it around then you will either be proven wrong or not this year. Remember with exception of Florida all of these so called great teams the beat UGA last year have to come to Athens. UGA will win 2/3 against USC, Auburn and Miss State and go at least 9-3.

Schedule sets up nicely for the typical 9 win season. But the predictions that count UGA beating UF are insane. If you have learned anything since Dooley left UGA, it should be that the one UGA game that is a lock is the UF game. And the lock is that they lose that game regardless of predictions, point spreads, etc. …… like clock work.
