Herschel Walker chimes in on the Dogs’ ‘Dream Team,’ and other notes

A few quick notes to start the day:

  • Herschel Walker became the latest to chime in on Georgia’s recruiting class. “How about that Dawgs ‘Dream Team’ Coach Mark Richt recruited?” Walker posted Thursday evening on Twitter. “We finally kept our Georgia boys at home. Nice job Coach.” Walker previously had expressed concerns about elite prospects leaving the state.
  • Georgia basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope received a high honor Thursday: He was chosen as a McDonald’s All-American. The shooting guard from Greenville (Ga.) will be one of 24 players in the prestigious all-star game March 30 at Chicago’s United Center.  According to the game’s website, 10 previous McDonald’s All-Americans went on to play for UGA: Terry Fair (a 1979 selection), Dominique Wilkins (1979), James Banks (1980), Vern Fleming (1980), Donald Hartry (1982), Melvin Howard (1983), Litterial Green (1988), Shaun Golden (1989), Carlos Strong (1992) and Damien Wilkins (1999).
  • Mark Fox will coach against one of his former players when Georgia plays at South Carolina on Saturday. Gamecocks forward Malik Cooke transferred from Nevada, where he played two years for Fox and started all 34 games in the 2008-09 season. “What a great kid,” Fox said. “It’ll be a strange experience, certainly, to go against him. Always root for him. Certainly won’t root for him on Saturday, but I do know we better block his butt off the boards because he’s a great offensive rebounder.” Cooke, who is from Charlotte, is averaging 8.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game for the Gamecocks.
  • Georgia and Georgia Tech will battle again Saturday -– this time in men’s tennis. The Bulldogs have dominated the rivalry in this sport, winning 24 consecutive matches and 57 of 65 against the Yellow Jackets. Saturday’s match starts at 1 p.m. at Tech’s Bill Moore Tennis Center.
  • Speaking of rivalries, Georgia and Florida also will meet Saturday –- this time in gymnastics. No. 1-ranked Florida (6-0, 3-0 SEC) vs. No. 4 Georgia (6-2, 2-1) in sold-out Stegeman Coliseum at 4 p.m.
  • And finally, several folks on the blog about Will Friend asked for details on how his candidacy for the UGA offensive line coaching job started.  I asked Friend that. “The first thing that happened was, Mike called me, Coach Bobo called me, told me he was interested and would like to talk,” Friend said. “I told him I would be in Athens whenever he needed. And so it kind of went from there. Did not hear much about it [for a while] because it was at the end of recruiting. For a week and a half, two week, period, didn’t hear much. Finally got a call from Coach Richt, and he wanted me to come over and meet.”

Tim, I was wondering why we could not get better control of the offensive boards this week. Was it Coach Fox’s game plan to drop back and play defense.

This is a nice recruiting class but rated 3rd in the conference & no higher rated than most of Richts other classes. It has a warmer feel because of the in-state flavor. It’s fun to be excited and Lord knows we are due for some good news but this staff has done less with more than just about any in the country.Tarkenton’s statements struck a nerve but EVERYTHIG TARKENTON SAID WAS THE TRUTH & anyone that disagrees with his statements is just kidding themselves or simply cant handle the truth. The sooner people(Mcgarity) accept this fact the sooner the program will recover and we can start competing for champioships again.

Could you imagine Herschel with a major role in UGA recruiting?? Having him sit in the home of ANY player in this state, talking about coming to play between the hedges………. Whenever he gets bored of dominating MMA, maybe we can put him on payroll somewhere.

WOW.

I would think a lot of ex players help in recruiting, but with all the assinine rules the NCAA has, one would have to be mega careful. I guess Tim would know all the rules or as many as any one human could know.

I think if Tarkenton had anything to say about CMR’s coaching or his ability, he should have been man enough to say it to him in private. He did not help improve anything one bit by mouthing off in public. Considering he never took home the big ring in college and certainly not as a pro. he needs to find another way to keep himself in the spot light if that is what he needs.
H. Walker is a class act from the beginning. I am not sure how well, the young kids these days will react to a legend, that played before they were a glimmer in their daddy’s eyes.

I am not sure how well the kids would relate to H. Walker since most of them were not born when he played. He is indeed a legend in UGA lore, but the kids now seem to be more like, “What have you done for me lately”, and buy into their own hype more than anything else. There just aren’t that many Ray Drews out there.

I’m happy to have Coach Friend, but it’s interesting to look at the coaches, from the big name programs that Mack Brown got to come to Texas, and yes, he’s on the hot seat also. The other big difference was the money. $ 420,000 for Searles, really. All the others are well paid. The conclusion I draw from the Texas hires is we’ll do what we have to for a chance to get back on top. We won’t settle for nothing but top notch coaches. One coach was from Boise. Georgia also has the money to hire anyone they want also, just say’n.

The first two games of the season are HUGE for DAWGS. Win both those, we will have a great year…lose those, uphill battle, of course VT recovered nicely last year after two early losses.

Who cares what HW says? Tebow was a better college football player than hershel could ever have dreamed of being. Tebow has two rings and broke walkers record, and did it while handing the dogs yet another beating in Jacksonville.

dawgster, my point to my post was I don’t think Mark or the University, as most companies would, go after the best out there. That said, Searles caught a lot of heat, but that tells me, based on his performance at LSU, that there is more to the story than we know. I promise you Mack Brown made two or three calls about him before he offered, and he hired him. Say what you will about Mack Brown or Texas, but he did win a NC in 2005 and play in another one year before last. The guy knows what he’s doing….And he hired Searles.
I’m sure Coach friend is a good guy and coach, but this is the UNIVERSITY of GEORGIA and we just hired a guy from UAB. Time will tell. We have the status of the SEC and the money to hire a almost anyone we want, yet Bobo and Friend will be running the offense this year.

Fran needs to worry more about pedaling junk on late night info-mercials. Funny, he never came out and said anything about UGA football until now. I don’t remember him making any statements about Goff or Donnan. Guess schlepping gimmicks on t.v. was better business back then.
Negative energy and assinine predictions are no good for the program. Get behind ‘em or get gone.

Gatormeat…Walker did it in 3 years…should have won at least two Heismans had the prevaling thought been for giving freshman the trophy back then…Both were great players and outstanding young men who have represented their universities very well…I’m not sure why you feel the need to take a shot at Walker…Is just shows how little class you have…Well now, maybe you can come on here and be a big shot and take you shots at me if that makes you feel like a big man…It amazes me that people like you start something for no apparent reason…i guess it makes you feel like a big man…Why don’t you look up the words “Respect” and “Class” in the dictionary….you might find a way to put them to good use one day…

Gatormeat:I don’t have a dog in this fight but to be a neutral observer it took Tebow almost a full 4 seasons to top some of Herschel’s records.Georgia only played a 10 game schedule in Herschel’s day as well.Project Herschel’s numbers over the same number of games as Tebow played and you’ll see how good Herschel was.

Why are some of these knuckleheads criticizing Fran Tarkenton. They just can’t handle the truth. Fran is a UGA patriot unlike these brainless robots who have some sort of fetish for that loser Markt Wrecked. Tarkenton only stated the obvious, and he certainly has forgotten more that Richt or all these Richt defenders will ever know about football. He earned his right to say it also. How do these morons know that Fran hasn’t said this to Richt’s face? Tarkenton is 100 times the man that Tan Man would like to be. So there. Fran had the courage to speak out the truth, and these people just can’t handle the truth.

82 dawg, I get it. Even Saban was a no name assit at Michigan somewhere. I’m just saying Mark never brings in a “name” to Athens. Yes, some young coaches given the opportunity will make a name for themselves, But I know for a fact we could of had Chavous From Tenn as DC the year before we Hired Grantham. Mark should of fired Willie and hired him, in the best interest of UGA football, but from reading your post, I know where you stand. I want to play for a NC title.

Herschel actively recruiting? Sorry, NCAA rules strictly and expressly prohibit active recruiting off campus by anyone other than members of the football coaching staff. Additionally, there are limitations applicable to former players bring involved in the process on campus. I’m sure Coach Richt would love to use Herschel, Hines Ward, Terrel Davis, Richard Seymour and others but the NCAA rules are limiting. Whatever Richt did this year appears to have worked well without HW so hope he keeps it going.

What’s the point of trying to compare Herschel and Tebow? Are you incapable of appreciating each individually and recognizing their phenomenal accomplishments?

Herschel talking to a 17 year old today about playing for UGA would be ask, ” now, who are you again” It’s been 30 years.
