Herschel Walker chimes in on the Dogs’ ‘Dream Team,’ and other notes

A few quick notes to start the day:

  • Herschel Walker became the latest to chime in on Georgia’s recruiting class. “How about that Dawgs ‘Dream Team’ Coach Mark Richt recruited?” Walker posted Thursday evening on Twitter. “We finally kept our Georgia boys at home. Nice job Coach.” Walker previously had expressed concerns about elite prospects leaving the state.
  • Georgia basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope received a high honor Thursday: He was chosen as a McDonald’s All-American. The shooting guard from Greenville (Ga.) will be one of 24 players in the prestigious all-star game March 30 at Chicago’s United Center.  According to the game’s website, 10 previous McDonald’s All-Americans went on to play for UGA: Terry Fair (a 1979 selection), Dominique Wilkins (1979), James Banks (1980), Vern Fleming (1980), Donald Hartry (1982), Melvin Howard (1983), Litterial Green (1988), Shaun Golden (1989), Carlos Strong (1992) and Damien Wilkins (1999).
  • Mark Fox will coach against one of his former players when Georgia plays at South Carolina on Saturday. Gamecocks forward Malik Cooke transferred from Nevada, where he played two years for Fox and started all 34 games in the 2008-09 season. “What a great kid,” Fox said. “It’ll be a strange experience, certainly, to go against him. Always root for him. Certainly won’t root for him on Saturday, but I do know we better block his butt off the boards because he’s a great offensive rebounder.” Cooke, who is from Charlotte, is averaging 8.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game for the Gamecocks.
  • Georgia and Georgia Tech will battle again Saturday -– this time in men’s tennis. The Bulldogs have dominated the rivalry in this sport, winning 24 consecutive matches and 57 of 65 against the Yellow Jackets. Saturday’s match starts at 1 p.m. at Tech’s Bill Moore Tennis Center.
  • Speaking of rivalries, Georgia and Florida also will meet Saturday –- this time in gymnastics. No. 1-ranked Florida (6-0, 3-0 SEC) vs. No. 4 Georgia (6-2, 2-1) in sold-out Stegeman Coliseum at 4 p.m.
  • And finally, several folks on the blog about Will Friend asked for details on how his candidacy for the UGA offensive line coaching job started.  I asked Friend that. “The first thing that happened was, Mike called me, Coach Bobo called me, told me he was interested and would like to talk,” Friend said. “I told him I would be in Athens whenever he needed. And so it kind of went from there. Did not hear much about it [for a while] because it was at the end of recruiting. For a week and a half, two week, period, didn’t hear much. Finally got a call from Coach Richt, and he wanted me to come over and meet.”

This is a nice recruiting class but rated 3rd in the conference & no higher rated than most of Richts other classes. It has a warmer feel because of the in-state flavor. It’s fun to be excited and Lord knows we are due for some good news but this staff has done less with more than just about any in the country.Tarkenton’s statements struck a nerve but EVERYTHIG TARKENTON SAID WAS THE TRUTH & anyone that disagrees with his statements is just kidding themselves or simply cant handle the truth. The sooner people(Mcgarity) accept this fact the sooner the program will recover and we can start competing for champioships again.

Could you imagine Herschel with a major role in UGA recruiting?? Having him sit in the home of ANY player in this state, talking about coming to play between the hedges………. Whenever he gets bored of dominating MMA, maybe we can put him on payroll somewhere.

I think if Tarkenton had anything to say about CMR’s coaching or his ability, he should have been man enough to say it to him in private. He did not help improve anything one bit by mouthing off in public. Considering he never took home the big ring in college and certainly not as a pro. he needs to find another way to keep himself in the spot light if that is what he needs.
H. Walker is a class act from the beginning. I am not sure how well, the young kids these days will react to a legend, that played before they were a glimmer in their daddy’s eyes.

I am not sure how well the kids would relate to H. Walker since most of them were not born when he played. He is indeed a legend in UGA lore, but the kids now seem to be more like, “What have you done for me lately”, and buy into their own hype more than anything else. There just aren’t that many Ray Drews out there.

I’m happy to have Coach Friend, but it’s interesting to look at the coaches, from the big name programs that Mack Brown got to come to Texas, and yes, he’s on the hot seat also. The other big difference was the money. $ 420,000 for Searles, really. All the others are well paid. The conclusion I draw from the Texas hires is we’ll do what we have to for a chance to get back on top. We won’t settle for nothing but top notch coaches. One coach was from Boise. Georgia also has the money to hire anyone they want also, just say’n.

dawgster, my point to my post was I don’t think Mark or the University, as most companies would, go after the best out there. That said, Searles caught a lot of heat, but that tells me, based on his performance at LSU, that there is more to the story than we know. I promise you Mack Brown made two or three calls about him before he offered, and he hired him. Say what you will about Mack Brown or Texas, but he did win a NC in 2005 and play in another one year before last. The guy knows what he’s doing….And he hired Searles.
I’m sure Coach friend is a good guy and coach, but this is the UNIVERSITY of GEORGIA and we just hired a guy from UAB. Time will tell. We have the status of the SEC and the money to hire a almost anyone we want, yet Bobo and Friend will be running the offense this year.

Herschel actively recruiting? Sorry, NCAA rules strictly and expressly prohibit active recruiting off campus by anyone other than members of the football coaching staff. Additionally, there are limitations applicable to former players bring involved in the process on campus. I’m sure Coach Richt would love to use Herschel, Hines Ward, Terrel Davis, Richard Seymour and others but the NCAA rules are limiting. Whatever Richt did this year appears to have worked well without HW so hope he keeps it going.

What’s the point of trying to compare Herschel and Tebow? Are you incapable of appreciating each individually and recognizing their phenomenal accomplishments?

Tebow is not the greatest…he’s just the latest…Walker is the best college football player who ever lived…Tebow= great teammate, nice guy, hard worker; but, better than Walker not when Walker has a 104 fever. Tebow won two titles yes…one from the bench….Tebow broke Walker’s record …yes…doing in four years what Walker did in three…Tebow was a good player…but, played the wing-T and is a major project as an NFL player…but, he is not top 5 in SEC history…maybe top 20 but not top 5…Walker, Jackson, Manning Archie, Manning Peyton, Alworth…he comes somewhere below those

@JB..i think its way too early to tell if this was a good hire or not…I’m sure Coach Friend came highly recommended and even though he didn’t come from an elited football program doesn’t say what kind of coach he is or what type he will be…As i said before the whold dawg nation would have been in uproar had we matched the salary at Texas…Let Texas pay that kind of money, perhaps he is worth it, but based on the results we have had the past two seasons many dawg fans would say he wasn’t…I personally think he was and is a very good coach, but took some heat for his O-lines not performing, especially run blocking…Coach Friend will bring some new spirit and some subtle changes that will help along with the renewed S&C program…but just for the record, ‘who is the best out there that we could have pulled away”..from an elite program….Most of the elite O-line coaches are making a huge salary and thus making a lateral move would be diffiicult to pull off from a salary standpoint…I personally think we did just find, but time will tell…go dawgs

What people don’t understand is, if UGA fired Richt in this past January the recruiting class would have been in shambles. Case in point, look at what happen to Pittsburgh. JB I know you are a big UGA fan, but you and all of the negative Dawg fans are part of the problem with hiring new coaches. 1) UGA proved that money was no object for hiring a defensive coordinator and it got us a 4th or 5th choice at best. When all of the fans are clamoring for the Coaches heads on a silver platter and declaring we have one more year or they will be fired, do you really think that this is CMR’s fault that we can not get a big name coach. I have not heard Texas fans wanting to fire Mack Brown, I guess they show more stability. What coach at a big school wants to come in for potentially one year and then have to find a job? No one.

What coach at a big school wants to come in for potentially one year and then have to find a job? No one.

Exactly right.

That is what is so amazing about the recruiting class that was brought in because I know for a fact that “Richt only has one more year” was used time and time again in the recruiting wars.

Has he been over to UGA to talk to Joe T about the S&C program since he was so critical of it? NO

This blog, read by 200-300 people IS NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM. Losing is the problem. And losing Ugly. How can 20-30 bloggers be responsible for our Spring Bulldog Club meeting going from 700 from 3 years ago to 100 last year, It ain’t the chicken. I agree 100% that Mark should have been given this year to try and correct things, But the clamor is down because it’s not football season. This blog lit up with 1000 hits after a game last year, and it wasn’t fit for woman and children to read. So, the handful on here are not the reason we HAD to hire the OL coach from UAB.

retired at Georgia. Not to take anything away from Sapp because he was a good solid player but if he doesn’t lead UGA to a win over GT that broke a long losing streak,I doubt his number would be retired.

Even playing just 12 games, if the bowl stats would have been counted, Tebow would still be looking up at THE GREATEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYER EVER!!!!!!!!

Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell was named among the top 25 college football recruiters by ESPN.com, but it’s interesting that the website cited his recruitment of Richmond, Va., linebacker Curtis Grant.

@schmeckdawg and patrick…good info on Herschel compared to Tebow…not to take anything away from Tebow, but Herschel’s records were done in 3 years as you said along with the extra games and statistics that were not counted during that time…Its really hard to compare players from different times always has been and always will be, but if everyone is just basically talking about statistics and records, then there is no way that you can compare what you did in 3 years vx 4 years…I’ll even throw out another record comparison, has nothing to do with Herschel, but has always been amazing to me…Pistol Pete Maravich scored more points in college in 3 years than anyone else has in 4 years…His game per average scoring was 44-45 pts per game…Also no 3 pointers when he played..I don’t think you will ever see another basketball player with those kind numbers, ever…I was fortunated enough to see him in person and meet him at a camp..never saw anyone that could do the things with a basketball that he could…Ok, i’m done, i know this is a football blog, just thouht i would throw that nugget out for some to enjoy….go dawgs

I guess I will need to clarify. We all know of the demanding structure that Alabama’s Scott Cochran has in place with conditioning and weight training at Alabama. He was voted the best strength and conditioning coach at two different schools according to ESPN. My point is that with the changes at the University and Tereshinski now running the program and our history of falling behind other schools, are our kids matching up to the workouts at other schools or is the toughness we hear from our kids just from not being in a program for a few years that pushed them to the next level?

As for taking the elevator, I know in my younger days after a hard workout, I would be looking for an elevator to carry my carcass up or down.

It hardly matters what the topic is. There are always a few morons throw out their opinions and claim that anyone who disagrees with them can’t handle the truth. Is it the same moron using different screen names? Or is that just some new trend for people who lack the intellect to support their opinion in a debate? Maybe Michael Moore, the liberal film producer, is a closet AJC blog commenter using multiple screen names. good players all and at least two fo them had UGA offers as a matter of fact James was UGA’s top offensive line target…but, they “chose” to go other places…which is good for Alabama…cause if they had to rely strictly on home grown talent…they wouldn’t compete for anything…and its even worse for UT…Buford High School AA team could beat the AAAAA state champs from TN….60-0…and from Ala…oh lets see…35-10…Ga is loaded with talent but not everyone stays home…doesn’t mean we didn’t try to get them.

IMHO, this isn’t the first UGA “Deam Team” in recruiting. Though the 79-80 Bulldogs were the nucleus of a capable bunch, the aforementioned Mr. Walker was practically a “Dream Team” all his own. Signing him was a bonanza–and EVERYBODY wanted him; from USC to Alabama. They knew what Dooley, Cavan et al knew: he should be able to provide a definite spark–(and he did) on that team of Glory. Imagine what the media of today would have done with that story.
I’ve always loved hearing Coach Dooley talk about Herschel in practice. He sounded like he was disappointed by him during fall practice in some old videos, but then on that hot September night in Knoxville, Superman came out of the phone booth…

@ dawgforlife,
You are correct on the non-UGA schools and the talent pool (e.g. Alabama and Tennessee–especially Tennessee). Buford could beat ALL the state champs in TN and that’s just Buford. UT’s last NC team had I think 22 Peach State players on it. They would be Kentucky II if not for out-of-state talent. And Auburn has always lived off GA talent. As a proud Georgian it’s a point of pride to see so many of our H.S. players on so many rosters. Of course we want the lion’s share of them but we can’t get them all.

To say H. Walker can’t relate to recruits (if he was ever in that position) or that the kids don’t know who he is would be dumb remark. These kids that play the game know who the all time greats are. That be like saying if Jerry Rice or Montana walked in a house the same kid would be clueless as to who they are. Walker is still talked about current day as one of the best college football players to suit up.

So Tebow was a better college football player than Herschel? And how do you compare the two? It took Tebow 4 years to break one single record of Herschel’s that he set in 3 years. And just how does a QB and RB compare in regards to team leadership and the ability to control games, seasons and NC’s. If my memory serves me right, UGA put a beatdown on UF during the 3 yrs Herschel was at Georgia. I think that the SEC should go back to the 70’s and early 80’s mentality and bring back the athletic dorm. Freshmen and sophomore and maybe junior’s don’t have the maturity to be on their own. Bring back the curfew . The high integrity , ethical and moral players will not care because that’s not what motivates them. They want to improve and win or get a degree. Only the players with a lack of value’s, no discipline and self centered would have a problem with a more ridged program but the entire SEC will have to implement the policy to treat all players the same in order to clean up our part of a deteriorating system and what college ball has become and something that nobody is proud of.

Guess who ranks # 120, dead last with 7 starters returning?

Auburn. Just have a hard time seeing the Heisman trophy winner who accounted for more than 72^% of their offense gone, a entire offensive line, their defensive front, including multiple award winner Fairly, Both special teams guys and a slew of freshmen expecting to compete for starting jobs, a schedule that includes payback games at Clemson, LSU, Georgia, on the road to win more than 5 or 6 games at best. That is not a slap at Auburn, just pointing out the loss of players and their schedule.

Tennessee recruits outside of Tennessee because they can. Georgia on the other hand if they cant get the homers in Georgia to come to Athens then they are where they are. You see Tennessee travels to Cal, UCLA, Notre Dame , Miami, because they are willing to play on the left coast because it helps with the National picture. Unlike uga. No Tennessee doesnt have the High school talent that Ga does but they dont need to stay inside their borders. Outside of the state of Ga , who cares about Athens? Make no mistake, that is exciting. That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee though. But, at least we are still getting quality players, and if nothing comes of it in a couple of years we are still getting beat by Fla and losing to Auburn or a Miss St., and under performing in bowl games, then CMR will not have a leg to stand on. And Vince didn’t have the worry of players leaving early for the NFL until Herschel left after his junior year.2008 18 scholarship players were lost by season ended injuries I was surprise Dawgs won 10 that year. 2009 was an off year mainly because we lost Stafford, Moreno and Asher Allen, almost our whole receiving corp , 2010 was just a bad year , every program experiences them. From TideSports.com…good read, and this guy who posted this stuff has been days of ahead of breaking news by every organization: Good Read…..

Patience is a virtue

I already know MUCH more than I can say…..MUCH MUCH more, heard all sorts of conflicting stories, gathered and pieced together as best I could about what’s being said & what was turned in, I could go on record & lay out every little detail I have heard or know to be true, but there’s a line I won’t cross, hopefully you & all of TS understands

ESPN is STILL sitting on it’s story and waiting on the bingogate defendant they got promised an interview with by the Feds. It wasn’t ever disproved, like many other rumors are it simply disappeared out of thin air because the FEDS got wind and cut the deal with ESPN. THIS story is involving $Cam, Legacy Banc group, ATM cards, wire taps the whole gambut, but not Trooper, thety might MIGHT try to throw it on him as he walks out the door to see if it sticks, but I doubt it, they know I’M SURE what all Troop knows & has seen, he will tell if they try to slam him under the bus. It is important to remember the way AU’s coaching staff works is not normal SEC staff, on Bama everyone knows what everyone else is doing, no secrets, no meddling or direct contact of ANY coaches with trustees or boosters, unless it’s Saban or a media planned function etc. This is CERTAINLY not the case with AU’s staff I’m told. To think that this happens is mind baffling to me, but it happens, Trooper is the main catalyst on staff at AU, that’s easy to see & Chizik is a pawn to AU’s BoT’s

I could sit here & speculate all day long about all the stories & all the info & if I KNEW it wasn’t going to see the light of day, I WOULD, but since it is & I have NO TIMETABLE, I only know for a FACT that this is a knee jerk reaction to make AU look better in many MANY eyes, but it’s too little too late. All you have to do is LOOK at the actions that will happen both in court with bingogate (federal defendants filing injunctions EVERY DAY so far it seems to keep certain pertinent info the Feds obtained primary to the case, under Federal lock & key until the trial is OVER) & down on the plains (The clouded recruitment of $Cam Newton story which seemed to pick up steam every day, then all vanished, then the switch of 2 prominent Bama leans, one a commit, Calloway & Cyrus, then what happened AFTER NSD with Cyrus, then wildly speculative stories all stemming from his last weekend visit, now what will happen in the next week with them strong arming Trooper out the door). This will all be publicized soon I can PROMISE you. All it’s gonna take is 1 domino to fall & the woodwork will likely be cleared out with stories, 1st hand accounts of parents etc. & several of the dominos are leaning as we speak about to fall.

JayDawg – Your comment “Georgia was still third in the conference in recruiting
in spite of keeping all the recruits at home.”
According to Scout.com the difference in #7 (Georgia) and #2 (Alabama, Auburn, whoever_
is only 100 points. Traditionally, this gap is over 1100 points. Thus, even Georgia ranked
7th, there is very little difference in our class and the other two SEC teams.

“This thing is in the ditch”

Fran is absolutely right. UGA is at BEST an 8-5 program. Turnout the lights, the party’s over Coach Richt!

Rivals:

AL 22 3.91 2632
FSU 29 3.55 2365
TEXAS 22 3.77 2322
USC 30 3.47 2315
UGA 26 3.58 2309
LSU 22 3.64 2224
AUBURN 24 3.62 2194
CLEMSON 29 3.34 2173
OREGON 23 3.57 2048
NOTRE DAME 23 3.48 1976

Auburn does not beat UGA in recruiting, the best thing yet to come is that Auburn has 5 players committed who have minimal shots to get into school without another administrator changing grades( aka Fairley). But do not put anything past that group of know cheats and con artist.

The rumblings in and around Auburn is so bad now, it has surpassed the rumblings around Alabama and Albert Means and their former machine of buying players out of Tennessee. It just looks very very bad for Auburn in the coming spring and summer months.

AUBurgeddon: How many people named Tony Paige can there be?

Auburn fans, you’d better hope to hell PRAY TO GOD that there are at least three.

Way back in November, this blog noted that during the struggles with the City of Newnan to save the Holy Zion Center for Deliverance from the heathen excavators hell bent on demolition, Bishop Cecil Newton had hired a contractor to make certain repairs to the facility:

On January 15, Cam Newton decided he wasn’t “all in” with teh fambly anymore and declared himself eligible for the 2011 NFL Draft. On January 21, after praying about it and talking it over with the good Bishop and brother Cecil, Jr., Newton hired an agent—Bus Cook of Perennial Sports.

There’s another figure connected with the Newtons who is also affiliated with Perennial. His name is Anthony (Tony) Paige. The same Tony Paige who represented big brother Cecil. That must have been one big family deliberation on who to hire, huh?

Are there two men named Tony Paige? Looks like it, in this case. The Contractor Paige lives in the Atlanta area. The Agent Paige lives in Maryland. Who knows if they even know each other, or even know that the Newton’s know two men named Tony Paige.

Maryland is a small state, and there’s a pretty (recently) famous high school there. It’s Dematha Catholic, where Cyrus Kouandjio played prep football. You may remember a bit of controversy surrounding his TV appearance on National Signing Day, and some of the issues surrounding his recruitment. Dematha has a pretty decent freshman football program, too.

Guess who the freshman football coach is?
