Herschel Walker chimes in on the Dogs’ ‘Dream Team,’ and other notes
5:00 am February 11, 2011, by Tim Tucker
A few quick notes to start the day:
- Herschel Walker became the latest to chime in on Georgia’s recruiting class. “How about that Dawgs ‘Dream Team’ Coach Mark Richt recruited?” Walker posted Thursday evening on Twitter. “We finally kept our Georgia boys at home. Nice job Coach.” Walker previously had expressed concerns about elite prospects leaving the state.
- Georgia basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope received a high honor Thursday: He was chosen as a McDonald’s All-American. The shooting guard from Greenville (Ga.) will be one of 24 players in the prestigious all-star game March 30 at Chicago’s United Center. According to the game’s website, 10 previous McDonald’s All-Americans went on to play for UGA: Terry Fair (a 1979 selection), Dominique Wilkins (1979), James Banks (1980), Vern Fleming (1980), Donald Hartry (1982), Melvin Howard (1983), Litterial Green (1988), Shaun Golden (1989), Carlos Strong (1992) and Damien Wilkins (1999).
- Mark Fox will coach against one of his former players when Georgia plays at South Carolina on Saturday. Gamecocks forward Malik Cooke transferred from Nevada, where he played two years for Fox and started all 34 games in the 2008-09 season. “What a great kid,” Fox said. “It’ll be a strange experience, certainly, to go against him. Always root for him. Certainly won’t root for him on Saturday, but I do know we better block his butt off the boards because he’s a great offensive rebounder.” Cooke, who is from Charlotte, is averaging 8.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game for the Gamecocks.
- Georgia and Georgia Tech will battle again Saturday -– this time in men’s tennis. The Bulldogs have dominated the rivalry in this sport, winning 24 consecutive matches and 57 of 65 against the Yellow Jackets. Saturday’s match starts at 1 p.m. at Tech’s Bill Moore Tennis Center.
- Speaking of rivalries, Georgia and Florida also will meet Saturday –- this time in gymnastics. No. 1-ranked Florida (6-0, 3-0 SEC) vs. No. 4 Georgia (6-2, 2-1) in sold-out Stegeman Coliseum at 4 p.m.
- And finally, several folks on the blog about Will Friend asked for details on how his candidacy for the UGA offensive line coaching job started. I asked Friend that. “The first thing that happened was, Mike called me, Coach Bobo called me, told me he was interested and would like to talk,” Friend said. “I told him I would be in Athens whenever he needed. And so it kind of went from there. Did not hear much about it [for a while] because it was at the end of recruiting. For a week and a half, two week, period, didn’t hear much. Finally got a call from Coach Richt, and he wanted me to come over and meet.”

@ HeHateGator: I’ve often wondered if there ARE any other blogs for those fans (I wouldn’t know: I couldn’t care less). One would think not, as much as they like to troll the specifically-UGA stories on the AJC. “Freedom of speech!” I can almost hear one of them say. Indeed, and that “freedom” also provides the means to make a fool of oneself as some of them so readily do.

@ dawgforlife,
You are correct on the non-UGA schools and the talent pool (e.g. Alabama and Tennessee–especially Tennessee). Buford could beat ALL the state champs in TN and that’s just Buford. UT’s last NC team had I think 22 Peach State players on it. They would be Kentucky II if not for out-of-state talent. And Auburn has always lived off GA talent. As a proud Georgian it’s a point of pride to see so many of our H.S. players on so many rosters. Of course we want the lion’s share of them but we can’t get them all.

I see a dawg fan also thinks these school will not win a NC in 30 years: Old Miss, Miss St, Vandy, UK and SC. I agree the new power order goes UF, BAMA, LSU, AUBURN, TENN, ARK, UGA, UK, then your list. 7th best and ahead of UK is about right, sorry.

To say H. Walker can’t relate to recruits (if he was ever in that position) or that the kids don’t know who he is would be dumb remark. These kids that play the game know who the all time greats are. That be like saying if Jerry Rice or Montana walked in a house the same kid would be clueless as to who they are. Walker is still talked about current day as one of the best college football players to suit up.

PLEASE, Dawg fans, get off of Richt’s back. Let’s let him have this 2011 season to right the ship. If we don’t get at least 9 wins, then you can resume the calls for his head. Let’s not be so quick to forget the mediocrity of the Goff & Donnan eras. Richt, while he’s had a few less-than-desirable years in a row, brought UGA football back to relevance in the SEC. How many SEC titles did we even compete for before he got here???

REALLY an HONEST question. How many Coaches at UGA have lost more Ugas during his time as the head coach? Vince was there for a LONG TIME but how many Ugas mascoted under him? What is the average life span of Ugas per Coaches careers? I am wondering. Who has the #s. Thanks. I really am asking.

“Dream Team” designation is mostly a buzz-phrase contrived to get more recruits leaning toward UGA. This is not the best recruiting class UGA has had even in the past decade. The class is ranked in the top 5 by only one recruiting service. Florida St. has the “dream team” this year.

Hey 5150 UAOD…I don’t know what that moniker is supposed to stand for, but with those latest two posts – 5:04 & 5:07 – you have earned, if not retired, the POS trophy for this blog. You seem to be the kind of jerk that one has to wonder how they’ve made it through life without routinely gettin’ their butts whipped. Then again maybe before you could resort to anonymous tasteless comments like those, you did…too bad they didn’t take.

Gatormeat says: “Who cares what HW says? Tebow was a better college football player than hershel could ever have dreamed of being. Tebow has two rings and broke walkers record, and did it while handing the dogs yet another beating in Jacksonville.”
So Tebow was a better college football player than Herschel? And how do you compare the two? It took Tebow 4 years to break one single record of Herschel’s that he set in 3 years. And just how does a QB and RB compare in regards to team leadership and the ability to control games, seasons and NC’s. If my memory serves me right, UGA put a beatdown on UF during the 3 yrs Herschel was at Georgia. So, we could go on and on jawing about UGA/UF and who had the better teams/players, but in the opinion of this Dawg fan, Herschel’s comments mean a lot to me and thousands of other people across the country!!!!!!! Go Dawgs!!!

Tebow was a Great college QB…
but Hershel went undefeated in the SEC during his 3 years at UGA….Tebow..did not…
Close loss at National Champion Clemson in 81, + Sugar Bowls in 82 and 83 in very close contests as well…
I would say they are the two finest SEC players I have seen in 40 years of watching college ball….

I think that the SEC should go back to the 70’s and early 80’s mentality and bring back the athletic dorm. Freshmen and sophomore and maybe junior’s don’t have the maturity to be on their own. Bring back the curfew . The high integrity , ethical and moral players will not care because that’s not what motivates them. They want to improve and win or get a degree. Only the players with a lack of value’s, no discipline and self centered would have a problem with a more ridged program but the entire SEC will have to implement the policy to treat all players the same in order to clean up our part of a deteriorating system and what college ball has become and something that nobody is proud of.

It looks like Phil Steele has not placed as much confidence in our dawgs has he has in the past 3 years. He also has left out Auburn, and Florida, but included, South Carolina, LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas.

Just want to point out that in his January 11 th article( Phil Steele) has the number of starters returning in 2011. We have 17 including special teams players.
Guess who ranks # 120, dead last with 7 starters returning?
Auburn. Just have a hard time seeing the Heisman trophy winner who accounted for more than 72^% of their offense gone, a entire offensive line, their defensive front, including multiple award winner Fairly, Both special teams guys and a slew of freshmen expecting to compete for starting jobs, a schedule that includes payback games at Clemson, LSU, Georgia, on the road to win more than 5 or 6 games at best. That is not a slap at Auburn, just pointing out the loss of players and their schedule.

“Dream Team” is a goup of ACCOMPLISHED individuals coming together for a common cause. If high school football against high school competition ( recall Ealey “competed” against 1A) is your idea of a “Dream Team” go look in the mirror and tell yourself you like……….

Finally, the experts have come forward and rated recruiting classes by position. How can you claim a dream team when Rivals rates your OL class 9th in the conference, just ahead of Vanderbilt! You would have finished last but for Xzavier Ward. More wierd decision making by Richt and Bobo. This is why you have lost to Florida an incredible 19 out of 21 times.

Richt shiould have been in Antonio Richardson’s living room the instant Jujuan James committed to Tennessee LAST YEAR, instead of going after the kid two weeks before signing day THIS YEAR. These are the reasons you lose to Florida every year.

Tennessee recruits outside of Tennessee because they can. Georgia on the other hand if they cant get the homers in Georgia to come to Athens then they are where they are. You see Tennessee travels to Cal, UCLA, Notre Dame , Miami, because they are willing to play on the left coast because it helps with the National picture. Unlike uga. No Tennessee doesnt have the High school talent that Ga does but they dont need to stay inside their borders. Outside of the state of Ga , who cares about Athens? These kids have not been alive long enough to see the national stage even care!

I don’t think the point is that we beat Bama or Auburn in recruiting, the excitement is that we had a fairly crappy year and we still had a top 5 or 6 class in the nation. Make no mistake, that is exciting. That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee though. But, at least we are still getting quality players, and if nothing comes of it in a couple of years we are still getting beat by Fla and losing to Auburn or a Miss St., and under performing in bowl games, then CMR will not have a leg to stand on. Time to coach like your job depended on it!

As Fraudburn showed us this past year, you win titles by paying top dollar for the best talent. Then that talent will say I had no idea money changed hands with daddy and only the truest of morons will believe that, aka, the NCAA and all Fraudburn fans. So until we start paying the Scam Newtons of the world, we won’t be getting very far. And since I don’t want to win by cheating, I’ll take 6-7 ANY DAY over what we just witnessed in Alabama….a damn joke.
