Herschel Walker chimes in on the Dogs’ ‘Dream Team,’ and other notes

A few quick notes to start the day:

  • Herschel Walker became the latest to chime in on Georgia’s recruiting class. “How about that Dawgs ‘Dream Team’ Coach Mark Richt recruited?” Walker posted Thursday evening on Twitter. “We finally kept our Georgia boys at home. Nice job Coach.” Walker previously had expressed concerns about elite prospects leaving the state.
  • Georgia basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope received a high honor Thursday: He was chosen as a McDonald’s All-American. The shooting guard from Greenville (Ga.) will be one of 24 players in the prestigious all-star game March 30 at Chicago’s United Center.  According to the game’s website, 10 previous McDonald’s All-Americans went on to play for UGA: Terry Fair (a 1979 selection), Dominique Wilkins (1979), James Banks (1980), Vern Fleming (1980), Donald Hartry (1982), Melvin Howard (1983), Litterial Green (1988), Shaun Golden (1989), Carlos Strong (1992) and Damien Wilkins (1999).
  • Mark Fox will coach against one of his former players when Georgia plays at South Carolina on Saturday. Gamecocks forward Malik Cooke transferred from Nevada, where he played two years for Fox and started all 34 games in the 2008-09 season. “What a great kid,” Fox said. “It’ll be a strange experience, certainly, to go against him. Always root for him. Certainly won’t root for him on Saturday, but I do know we better block his butt off the boards because he’s a great offensive rebounder.” Cooke, who is from Charlotte, is averaging 8.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game for the Gamecocks.
  • Georgia and Georgia Tech will battle again Saturday -– this time in men’s tennis. The Bulldogs have dominated the rivalry in this sport, winning 24 consecutive matches and 57 of 65 against the Yellow Jackets. Saturday’s match starts at 1 p.m. at Tech’s Bill Moore Tennis Center.
  • Speaking of rivalries, Georgia and Florida also will meet Saturday –- this time in gymnastics. No. 1-ranked Florida (6-0, 3-0 SEC) vs. No. 4 Georgia (6-2, 2-1) in sold-out Stegeman Coliseum at 4 p.m.
  • And finally, several folks on the blog about Will Friend asked for details on how his candidacy for the UGA offensive line coaching job started.  I asked Friend that. “The first thing that happened was, Mike called me, Coach Bobo called me, told me he was interested and would like to talk,” Friend said. “I told him I would be in Athens whenever he needed. And so it kind of went from there. Did not hear much about it [for a while] because it was at the end of recruiting. For a week and a half, two week, period, didn’t hear much. Finally got a call from Coach Richt, and he wanted me to come over and meet.”

UGA have you not learned anything from the past. You are setting yourself up for failure by overhyping a class that has not played a down. Have you not learned anything from the past with the blackouts and other gimmics that do not work.
If I was CMR I would not make another comment about the dream team and just start coaching.

Snoop- people don’t like to hear the truth. They want to hear glossy, standard, sugar coated answers that are gentle on the feelings of others. Most importantly you better not tick anybody off or offend them with your answer.

Your kid didn’t get cut from the team because he’s not good enough and you as the parent have a warped sense of reality as to how good your kid is; instead there are alot of people ahead of him on the depth chart and he just isn’t going to get the reps he needs to get better.

Oh now that we have Herschel Walker’s blessing, all is now good in Athens. Give me a break! BTW, what has Walker done for UGA since he left? ZERO! This new gimmick is not going to help GA. Florida still owns the East for 2011!

How can Uga annoint itself the “dream team” without looking at each position. Linebacker- Yes. Hererra is a beast. DB- Yes. Corey Moore. DL- Yes, Drew/Jenkins. QB- Yes Lemay will push wonderboy. Rb- Yes Isiah. WR- Yes Mitchell/Conley. OL- Hell no. Worst talent evaluation yet.Dabell/ Dantzler over-rated and will get you beat. Same ole story and a big reason Uga is not competitive.

woebegong,

I agree completely with you. Fran Tarkenton should have had those discussions in private and not put UGA in a bad light. Show complete lack of class on his part. I’m not saying that he was wrong on what he said but my biggest problem is that he did it to get attention for his “Frankly Fran” radio show. He didn’t do it for the good of UGA he did it for himself and to get attention. THAT’S WHAT ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE MAD ABOUT

Tired of the Tebow-Hershel comparisons. It cannot be done fairly. Tebow played an extra year, Hershel had more carries, Tebow threw TD passes because he played QB. They were both equally great college football players who represented themselves and their Universities flawlessly.

I guess I will need to clarify. We all know of the demanding structure that Alabama’s Scott Cochran has in place with conditioning and weight training at Alabama. He was voted the best strength and conditioning coach at two different schools according to ESPN. My point is that with the changes at the University and Tereshinski now running the program and our history of falling behind other schools, are our kids matching up to the workouts at other schools or is the toughness we hear from our kids just from not being in a program for a few years that pushed them to the next level?

As for taking the elevator, I know in my younger days after a hard workout, I would be looking for an elevator to carry my carcass up or down.

Milk it boys

As long as Bammers talk about Bear, Notre Dame talks about Rockne, The Yankees talk about Babe Ruth, we will continue to remember Herschel and the magical year of 1980. Richt will surely win us more titles, but, 1980 and that magical run with that freshman tailback will always be sweet.

Dogs Smell – Peyton Manning has a full-time job as a quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts in case your TV is broke. And, oh by the way, since when are you the expert on Manning’s schedule? How do you really know what they ask of him in the recruiting process. EVERY team looks to their former legends from time to time but only once in a while for active athletes with pro careers.

You Can't Handle The Truth

February 11th, 2011
1:26 pm

If you don’t agree with me, you can’t handle the truth.

It hardly matters what the topic is. There are always a few morons throw out their opinions and claim that anyone who disagrees with them can’t handle the truth. Is it the same moron using different screen names? Or is that just some new trend for people who lack the intellect to support their opinion in a debate? Maybe Michael Moore, the liberal film producer, is a closet AJC blog commenter using multiple screen names. The “you can’t handle the truth” label for anyone who disagrees reminds me of his film making style.

Anyway, if you want to know what you should think, just ask me and I’ll tell you the “truth”.

leave it to Tide Roll…to come in and project against two white offensive linemen…and use a condesending term against our soon to be all-SEC white quarterback….I love black athletes myself but, having them does not insure victory…and having a handful of white players doesn’t mean one is racist…if an all black OL insured victory, Grambling State would be national champions every year

good players all and at least two fo them had UGA offers as a matter of fact James was UGA’s top offensive line target…but, they “chose” to go other places…which is good for Alabama…cause if they had to rely strictly on home grown talent…they wouldn’t compete for anything…and its even worse for UT…Buford High School AA team could beat the AAAAA state champs from TN….60-0…and from Ala…oh lets see…35-10…Ga is loaded with talent but not everyone stays home…doesn’t mean we didn’t try to get them.

IMHO, this isn’t the first UGA “Deam Team” in recruiting. Though the 79-80 Bulldogs were the nucleus of a capable bunch, the aforementioned Mr. Walker was practically a “Dream Team” all his own. Signing him was a bonanza–and EVERYBODY wanted him; from USC to Alabama. They knew what Dooley, Cavan et al knew: he should be able to provide a definite spark–(and he did) on that team of Glory. Imagine what the media of today would have done with that story.
I’ve always loved hearing Coach Dooley talk about Herschel in practice. He sounded like he was disappointed by him during fall practice in some old videos, but then on that hot September night in Knoxville, Superman came out of the phone booth…
