Herschel Walker chimes in on the Dogs’ ‘Dream Team,’ and other notes
5:00 am February 11, 2011, by Tim Tucker
A few quick notes to start the day:
- Herschel Walker became the latest to chime in on Georgia’s recruiting class. “How about that Dawgs ‘Dream Team’ Coach Mark Richt recruited?” Walker posted Thursday evening on Twitter. “We finally kept our Georgia boys at home. Nice job Coach.” Walker previously had expressed concerns about elite prospects leaving the state.
- Georgia basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope received a high honor Thursday: He was chosen as a McDonald’s All-American. The shooting guard from Greenville (Ga.) will be one of 24 players in the prestigious all-star game March 30 at Chicago’s United Center. According to the game’s website, 10 previous McDonald’s All-Americans went on to play for UGA: Terry Fair (a 1979 selection), Dominique Wilkins (1979), James Banks (1980), Vern Fleming (1980), Donald Hartry (1982), Melvin Howard (1983), Litterial Green (1988), Shaun Golden (1989), Carlos Strong (1992) and Damien Wilkins (1999).
- Mark Fox will coach against one of his former players when Georgia plays at South Carolina on Saturday. Gamecocks forward Malik Cooke transferred from Nevada, where he played two years for Fox and started all 34 games in the 2008-09 season. “What a great kid,” Fox said. “It’ll be a strange experience, certainly, to go against him. Always root for him. Certainly won’t root for him on Saturday, but I do know we better block his butt off the boards because he’s a great offensive rebounder.” Cooke, who is from Charlotte, is averaging 8.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game for the Gamecocks.
- Georgia and Georgia Tech will battle again Saturday -– this time in men’s tennis. The Bulldogs have dominated the rivalry in this sport, winning 24 consecutive matches and 57 of 65 against the Yellow Jackets. Saturday’s match starts at 1 p.m. at Tech’s Bill Moore Tennis Center.
- Speaking of rivalries, Georgia and Florida also will meet Saturday –- this time in gymnastics. No. 1-ranked Florida (6-0, 3-0 SEC) vs. No. 4 Georgia (6-2, 2-1) in sold-out Stegeman Coliseum at 4 p.m.
- And finally, several folks on the blog about Will Friend asked for details on how his candidacy for the UGA offensive line coaching job started. I asked Friend that. “The first thing that happened was, Mike called me, Coach Bobo called me, told me he was interested and would like to talk,” Friend said. “I told him I would be in Athens whenever he needed. And so it kind of went from there. Did not hear much about it [for a while] because it was at the end of recruiting. For a week and a half, two week, period, didn’t hear much. Finally got a call from Coach Richt, and he wanted me to come over and meet.”

To all the UGA fans. You mention Trippi and Sinkwich from time to time.Herschel is talked about a lot and deservedly so.Why do you not talk about Theron Sapp? If I’m not mistaken his number is the 4th number
retired at Georgia. Not to take anything away from Sapp because he was a good solid player but if he doesn’t lead UGA to a win over GT that broke a long losing streak,I doubt his number would be retired.

DawginLex…… Maybe Fran was the right voice to seriously wake up this program. I say it just may be a blessing in disguise in the long run. But here’s thing, we will have to wait and see. I see Buck Belue is already question the new strength and conditioning program and brings up some good points.

What happened, was Bobo secured his back up plan first, then spent 2 weeks persuing his top choices, after everybody tuned him down, due to the low salary and 1 year term McGarity shackled Bobo with, Bobo called him 2 weeks later and offered the job.

@dawgster: Great job on identifying that Herschel’s stats were done in only 3 years plus think of all of the games where Dooley took him out early. Now here’s the real kicker, back in Herschel’s day, the most games that you could play in a year was 12(11 regular and a bowl game) AND bowl stats didn’t count! Even playing just 12 games, if the bowl stats would have been counted, Tebow would still be looking up at THE GREATEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYER EVER!!!!!!!!

Herschel is ten times the man little Fran Tarkenton is. Fran little man with a big mouth has to spout off occassionally and has gotten him a fat lip before. Of course Coach Richt is to nice a person to do it, But would pay to see him go 3 round in the ring with little Fran. Or better still Fran go one round with Herschel.

@ gator meat. Herschel never lost to the Gatorade. Tebow lost to georgia. Herschel lost 4 games lol at georgia. How many games did tebow to lose at florida? Herschel never cried after georgia lost. Tebow cried everytime florida lost. Tebow touched the ball every snap. Herschel touch the ball maybe 55 percent of the time. Tim played 4 years herschel played 3 years. Tim had more games per year then herschel. So you know my misinformed friend tim was not better than herschel

The Columbus Dispatch
Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell was named among the top 25 college football recruiters by ESPN.com, but it’s interesting that the website cited his recruitment of Richmond, Va., linebacker Curtis Grant.
“It takes hard work and a daily grind,” ESPN wrote. “That’s what Fickell had to do in landing Grant as well as a trio of other linebackers to Columbus.”

@schmeckdawg and patrick…good info on Herschel compared to Tebow…not to take anything away from Tebow, but Herschel’s records were done in 3 years as you said along with the extra games and statistics that were not counted during that time…Its really hard to compare players from different times always has been and always will be, but if everyone is just basically talking about statistics and records, then there is no way that you can compare what you did in 3 years vx 4 years…I’ll even throw out another record comparison, has nothing to do with Herschel, but has always been amazing to me…Pistol Pete Maravich scored more points in college in 3 years than anyone else has in 4 years…His game per average scoring was 44-45 pts per game…Also no 3 pointers when he played..I don’t think you will ever see another basketball player with those kind numbers, ever…I was fortunated enough to see him in person and meet him at a camp..never saw anyone that could do the things with a basketball that he could…Ok, i’m done, i know this is a football blog, just thouht i would throw that nugget out for some to enjoy….go dawgs

@patrick….i understand where you are coming from…but its not so much about freedom of speech as it that alot of these blogs turn into a insult match back and forth and the actual article gets lost in all of that…i think most everyone would like to talk about football, recruiting and their own team without having to sort out all the nonsense…but if everyone enjoys that, then thats fine, but myself and others would like to acutally have civil discussions with that is actually relevant to the original topic…but hey, thats just my opinion, everyone has the right to feel differently than i do…go dawgs
