Herschel Walker chimes in on the Dogs’ ‘Dream Team,’ and other notes

A few quick notes to start the day:

  • Herschel Walker became the latest to chime in on Georgia’s recruiting class. “How about that Dawgs ‘Dream Team’ Coach Mark Richt recruited?” Walker posted Thursday evening on Twitter. “We finally kept our Georgia boys at home. Nice job Coach.” Walker previously had expressed concerns about elite prospects leaving the state.
  • Georgia basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope received a high honor Thursday: He was chosen as a McDonald’s All-American. The shooting guard from Greenville (Ga.) will be one of 24 players in the prestigious all-star game March 30 at Chicago’s United Center.  According to the game’s website, 10 previous McDonald’s All-Americans went on to play for UGA: Terry Fair (a 1979 selection), Dominique Wilkins (1979), James Banks (1980), Vern Fleming (1980), Donald Hartry (1982), Melvin Howard (1983), Litterial Green (1988), Shaun Golden (1989), Carlos Strong (1992) and Damien Wilkins (1999).
  • Mark Fox will coach against one of his former players when Georgia plays at South Carolina on Saturday. Gamecocks forward Malik Cooke transferred from Nevada, where he played two years for Fox and started all 34 games in the 2008-09 season. “What a great kid,” Fox said. “It’ll be a strange experience, certainly, to go against him. Always root for him. Certainly won’t root for him on Saturday, but I do know we better block his butt off the boards because he’s a great offensive rebounder.” Cooke, who is from Charlotte, is averaging 8.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game for the Gamecocks.
  • Georgia and Georgia Tech will battle again Saturday -– this time in men’s tennis. The Bulldogs have dominated the rivalry in this sport, winning 24 consecutive matches and 57 of 65 against the Yellow Jackets. Saturday’s match starts at 1 p.m. at Tech’s Bill Moore Tennis Center.
  • Speaking of rivalries, Georgia and Florida also will meet Saturday –- this time in gymnastics. No. 1-ranked Florida (6-0, 3-0 SEC) vs. No. 4 Georgia (6-2, 2-1) in sold-out Stegeman Coliseum at 4 p.m.
  • And finally, several folks on the blog about Will Friend asked for details on how his candidacy for the UGA offensive line coaching job started.  I asked Friend that. “The first thing that happened was, Mike called me, Coach Bobo called me, told me he was interested and would like to talk,” Friend said. “I told him I would be in Athens whenever he needed. And so it kind of went from there. Did not hear much about it [for a while] because it was at the end of recruiting. For a week and a half, two week, period, didn’t hear much. Finally got a call from Coach Richt, and he wanted me to come over and meet.”

Tebow is not the greatest…he’s just the latest…Walker is the best college football player who ever lived…Tebow= great teammate, nice guy, hard worker; but, better than Walker not when Walker has a 104 fever. Tebow won two titles yes…one from the bench….Tebow broke Walker’s record …yes…doing in four years what Walker did in three…Tebow was a good player…but, played the wing-T and is a major project as an NFL player…but, he is not top 5 in SEC history…maybe top 20 but not top 5…Walker, Jackson, Manning Archie, Manning Peyton, Alworth…he comes somewhere below those

jb yes I support CMR always have always will…but if he doesn’t turn us around this year I will support the change as well.MY question is “HOW” do you know we could have had Chavis the year before? I too want to play for NC. You and HT and everybody else can get on here and bi**h and moan about Richt but he is here for 2011 we just need to support him and the team. If you are a Hartman fund contributor send letters to McGarity if he does produce this year. But for now everyone needs to support him as the moaning only hurts the school…

@JB..i think its way too early to tell if this was a good hire or not…I’m sure Coach Friend came highly recommended and even though he didn’t come from an elited football program doesn’t say what kind of coach he is or what type he will be…As i said before the whold dawg nation would have been in uproar had we matched the salary at Texas…Let Texas pay that kind of money, perhaps he is worth it, but based on the results we have had the past two seasons many dawg fans would say he wasn’t…I personally think he was and is a very good coach, but took some heat for his O-lines not performing, especially run blocking…Coach Friend will bring some new spirit and some subtle changes that will help along with the renewed S&C program…but just for the record, ‘who is the best out there that we could have pulled away”..from an elite program….Most of the elite O-line coaches are making a huge salary and thus making a lateral move would be diffiicult to pull off from a salary standpoint…I personally think we did just find, but time will tell…go dawgs

@82Dawg…amen to your comments…nothing good comes from the negative comments we see on here, only hurts the program,…Coach Richt has an opportunity next season to turn it around, i think he will, and when he does, many of these guys on here will jump right on that ship…As you said if he doesn’t improve things, then our AD will do whats best for the UGA…unitil then lets just support the team and be excited about this fantastic recruiting class that when added to what we have should have us in contention the next few years…go dawgfs

What people don’t understand is, if UGA fired Richt in this past January the recruiting class would have been in shambles. Case in point, look at what happen to Pittsburgh. They had 21 committments and had a Top 20 class at the end of December. They forced Coach Mustache out and 15 commitments de-committed. The new staff had to piece together their recruiting class.

You can say what you want to about Friend, but HIS O-line had 12 sacks in 12 games…I’ll take that since he had supposedly “inferior” talent to us. I think he is gonna get the big uglies ready to push some folks around this year. Go Dawgs!

Gatormeat,

I understand the point you are trying to make but you should also know that bowl stats were not included in Herschel’s era as they were in Tebow’s.

I take nothing away from Tebow. He was/is a gamer and a helluva human being.

@jason13..you are correct our recruiting would have taken a huge hit….its about building relationships, i don’t know why that is so hard for some to understand….lets see what happens next season and even more so the season after to see if this staff can gel this talent into a force to be reckoned with…i think they will and then the nasayers can have at it…go dawgs…

Archie Griffin couldn’t hold HW’s jockstrap

Tebow was great but not as great as Herschel.

Herschel-class act who has been critical at times but did it the right way and will still be around to be heard from again.

Tarkenton-Washed up has been looking for any kind of media attention who does a drive by shooting on the coaching staff of his alma mater only to never be heard from again.

Fact: Archie Griffin won two Heismans. Hard to hold Herschel’s jock with a Heisman in each hand.
If not mistaken, we’ve had two MORE Heisman winner’s since Archie.

I feel so much better now that I know he was Coach Bobo’s choice…. wish they would consulted a little more with someone who knows a lot about the position and the list of available candidates out there…someone like , maybe my 8 year old son or, ooohhh even better, maybe that guy who lives inder the interstate overpass!! Bobo is probably pitching manure to Richt in hopes that he’ll fail and maybe they’ll offer HIM the job at the end of next season. Wouldn’t be surprised if that happened at all!!!!

Buckeye,

Archie Griffin was nowhere near the college player that Herschel was and that is an undeniable fact.

Archie played on great teams that he helped.

Herschel made a good team great.

There is a big difference.

Both are great people and have made their universities proud.

JB I know you are a big UGA fan, but you and all of the negative Dawg fans are part of the problem with hiring new coaches. 1) UGA proved that money was no object for hiring a defensive coordinator and it got us a 4th or 5th choice at best. When all of the fans are clamoring for the Coaches heads on a silver platter and declaring we have one more year or they will be fired, do you really think that this is CMR’s fault that we can not get a big name coach. I have not heard Texas fans wanting to fire Mack Brown, I guess they show more stability. What coach at a big school wants to come in for potentially one year and then have to find a job? No one.

I have no problem with someone being critical but you need to do it in the right way.

and riddle me this, Where is Francis now? Will he ever be heard from again regarding UGA football?

The answer is no. He got what he wanted. His hair salon products or party rings or whatever crap he is selling these days got a brief rise in sales and he got his name mentioned in the news.

Another “throw them udner bus” article
from UGA homer Chip Towers today.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

What can be said about Waushan Ealy, Caleb King, and Dexter Moody.

Let’s just ask UGA Alum Hale Almand,
who is a recognized authority on UGA. Quote:

“We may not make a university student out of him, but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbage man when he gets through with his athletic career.”

So, will UGAG be starting up a new Postal Service degree program,
as part of their remedial, oops, “Developmental” Studies program ??

This blog, read by 200-300 people IS NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM. Losing is the problem. And losing Ugly. How can 20-30 bloggers be responsible for our Spring Bulldog Club meeting going from 700 from 3 years ago to 100 last year, It ain’t the chicken. I agree 100% that Mark should have been given this year to try and correct things, But the clamor is down because it’s not football season. This blog lit up with 1000 hits after a game last year, and it wasn’t fit for woman and children to read. So, the handful on here are not the reason we HAD to hire the OL coach from UAB.
