Will Friend celebrated his 36th birthday Monday by becoming Georgia’s offensive line coach.
Friend, who held the same position at Alabama-Birmingham for the past four seasons, was an All-SEC offensive lineman at Alabama in the 1990s and a graduate assistant coach at Georgia in 2003-04.
He fills the position vacated on the Georgia staff by last month’s departure of Stacy Searels for the same job at Texas.
At UAB, Friend worked under head coach Neil Callaway, who was Georgia’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 2001-06. Callaway became UAB’s head coach in 2007 and immediately hired Friend, who had been offensive line coach at Gardner-Webb for two years after his graduate-assistant stint under Callaway at Georgia.
“I got to see first-hand his work ethic when he was a graduate assistant on our staff,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement announcing the hire, “and since that time he’s developed into a seasoned, top-notch offensive line coach.”
The hire, expected since late last week, became official when routine pre-employment background checks were completed.
Friend was traveling and not available for an interview Monday. He said in a statement that he is “extremely excited” about the “tremendous opportunity” at Georgia.
“When I worked with Coach Richt and the staff as a grad assistant, I had a great experience, and I always wondered if I might have the opportunity to come back to Athens,” he said. “I am looking forward to getting to work.”
Friend, a native of Philadelphia, Miss., was a member of Alabama’s “Team of the Decade” for the 1990s. He was a four-year starter at offensive guard for the Crimson Tide from 1993-97.
Of the 120 FBS (formerly Division I-A) teams, UAB last season ranked 15th in fewest sacks allowed (12), 30th in total offense (423 yards per game), 24th in passing offense (267 yards per game) and 59th in rushing offense (156 yards per game).

Great hire IMO! This guy was a hard-nosed All SEC lineman for Alabama back in the real SEC days and knows how to play offensive line and he knows how to coach. Just because he comes from UAB means NOTHING. Don’t have to come from Auburn or Florida, etc just to know how to coach. All we need is someone to coach those boys up and get them motivated to hit everything that moves. Hopefully he can do that for us.

Has anybody ever heard of this guy? No D-1 experience other than a grad asst. here. What is CMR thinking about? Is this the best available coach in the Country? I know Dave Johnson applied and interviewed for the job Dave was our former tight end coach and the OL coach at WVU for the past 3 years. He lost his job when Bill Stewart the HC was fired. He is a great OL coach, and wanted the job, what happened?
Based on the performance of the OL the last 2 years we needed someone with good experience at this level and CMR hires a “rookie”. Is this guy Mark’s cousin or something? If our OL fails to improve over the last 2 years, Mark and this rookie will both be looking for jobs.

Because we are 5000 miles out in the Pacific and not a part of the United States, a lot of our players don’t get the recognition they merit. But, just look at players such as Troy Polumalu and realize that we have great players here! Vasi will be going the JC route this fall. hey still@thebar,
The only thing we’ll be waiting for in 2012 is lowering our championship banner!!! Tech plays in an inferior conference and had the same record? Why don’t you guys learn how to play “modern” football and throw a forward pass? Your gimmick of an offense has run its course. Tell CPJ to look into the spread or something that has been run successfully since 1950, oh wait you would need real athletes to do it and not the scrubs that the major schools look over.
Enjoy running an antiquated offense with inferior athletes. Sweet recruiting class by the way, how people again switched their commitment from your trade school to a real college?

Here’s a little more info on what Friend did this past year as OL coach for those of you who enjoy facts over whineing about not getting a “big name” coach.
UAB yielded 12 sacks this year, tied for 15th in the nation. The Blazers ranked 59th in the nation in rushing offense last season. Keep in mind the Blazers were often scheduled as the “whiiping boy” against much bigger programs.
One of Friend’s best coaching jobs was with a lineman named Matt McCants. The 6-fooot-7, 295-pound McCants only played one year of high school football, playing tuba in the school band before joining the team his senior season.
Under Friend’s tutelage, McCants started seven games at offensive tackle as a true freshman, including the season opener against Michigan State. After sitting out the 2008 season with academic issues, he returned to the left tackle spot and became an all-conference selection.
Those 12 sacks included games against SMU, Tenn, and Miss St. among others.
If turning a member of the band into an all conference OT in not the definition of coaching up someone give me a better one.

I still like Bobo as DE coach. It falls in line with McGarity’s relieving coaches of excess responsibilities. Bobo can coach them to 1) occupy the OT and 2) string the play to the outside. Welcome Coach Friend,
I think you will be just fine at UGA and are certainly an upgrade form what left.
If these players work their butts off a lot in the S and C program, They will be a lot easier for the new coach to coach. I also think, if the offensive play calling opens also, they will show more spirit and knock the snot outta a few defensive lines for other teams. We have the size, and athletic skill for a really good O line and I think this young man is the guy to help them be very productive.

I honestly don’t know whether Friend will be a good coach or not. I do know that while he’s a good recruiter, Bobo has no business being an OC at UGA. NO ONE should have UGA as their first OC gig. Bobo is a miserable play-caller, despite having loads of talent on offense and having gone up against really bad defenses this past season (Ark, Aub against pass, Colorado, GT, UL, UK, UT, Vandy, etc).

Will Friend’s QB was a dual threat QB that passed for 2000 yards in n2010 and ran for 1000, becoming the first guy to do that.
My thinking is, maybe this is what Richt & Bobo are planning to do with Murray/Lemay, let them throw for 3000, and run for 1000.
Running QB’s are what win in the SEC, look at Cam & Tebow. It’s a really tough match up for a defense.

Look, Richt didn’ty have a lot of options ok? Richt’s in a short 3 year contract, and McGarity only offered the O-Line coach a 1 year deal worth about $25,000. It was either this guy, or a high school coach. Richt did the best he could.

Recipe for UGA offensive success in 2011:
1. Joe T’s strength & conditioning improves stamina, our O-Line power, & reduces injuries.
2. Friend is a friend to our O-Line and we maximize the potential of the vets & redshirts.
3. Coaches Bobo and Richt review the predictability of our playcalling, & takes steps to stop it.
4. Coaches Bobo and Richt review the lack of imagination in our offense, & our tendency to become passive at times – playing not to lose instead of playing to maximize our point total.
5. 2 receivers step up to go along with T. King and O. Charles.
6. Someone takes the TB position & refuses to give it up or fumble it away….
Big “if”, but if these 6 things took place, we could average 35-40 points per game and win at least 10. Only SC should have much ability to slow down our offense under this scenario….. While all of these are possible, I have least confidence in Coach Bobo adjusting his approach. (For you Boboites who refuse to look more than skin deep, our offense failed us at critical times, and often in the 4th Quarter. Some of it can be blamed on play-calling, not all, but some. Running a draw up the middle on almost every 2nd & 10 following an incomplete pass is just ONE example).

There is no other place to comment on this site regarding issues of real import. So here goes:
There is a story on the front page describing how “business” is concerned about the impending immigration law that is similar to the Arizona law.
My view: Any businessman that violates the law by hiring illegal immigrants should be sent to prison. They should be hit with a fine sufficient in magnitude that their business will suffer to the point of closure, unless they agree to sell it to existing legal employees. In short, the crooked businessmen that are decimating our economy and denying AMERICANS a job opportunity should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
This isn’t a slam on the illegals. But they are just that: illegals. They need to go home. Don’t tell me that Americans won’t do the jobs. Look at the throngs that show up when even a menial job is advertised in the paper.

Im not a coach nor do i want to be. Nor am i anti georgia this or that but i do think alot. My guess is Georgia was looking for a new line coach but didnt wanna spend the money to get a decent one and thats 1st. 2nd Georgia sure did get in a hurry to find one to a certain degree and hoped for the best.
If you have an opening thats important at a companyt where you work at dont you think that you might look around a bit and see who’s the most qualified person for that job? I mean if you guess wrong then your company will suffer right? So you ask people, run ads, interview people, then select the top 10 or top 5 and get a second interview. Was there even a selection process at Georgia?
I doubt it. May have went lets look at a few coaches see which ones are best qualified and see how little they are willing to make if we hire them.
If i was running the team which im not, the 1st thing i wouldve done was look at the upper echelon of OL Coaches in both NFL and the NCAA then contact them for an interview.
I wouldve looked for the guy with the most experience, good resume’ and how many players he has graduated to the NFL and see if he was willing to get interviewed.
I also would have looked at what he can bring to the school, does he stay at a school or jump ship like Jim Mora does or hate to say it Nick Saban and finally can he help with recruiting.
Call me Anti Dawg if you like cause im not but it just seems to me that Georgia limited itself to those possibilities because they were in a hurry.

UGA fans are delusional: dream team and a new OL coach and we’re ecstatic. This team is still burdened with the same HC that has been outcoached, outsmarted, outmotivated and outplayed for the past three years in the SEC. He is still the same guy hiring second rate coaches and tolerating mediocrity from the existing staff. Curb your enthusiasm until Richt fields another competitive football team that can beat can beat somebody other than GT.

Personally I know nothing about Coach Friend but I hope that Coach Richt’s friendship with Coach Calloway did not overly influence him. I also hope this guy comes in as a real hardnosed coach and doesn’t play favorites. We have had way too many mental errors/missed assignments on the O-line the last 3 years and this along with the predictable play calling has helped in causing some of our inconsistency on offense.

Mark is in a tough spot. A couple of things happened here. Calloway AND Richt are both on a short leash. Calloway likes this young coach. Calloway’s parting gift to him is a shot at the big time. Richt/UGA could not fill this job with a big time, seasoned 400K kinda guy without 2 to 3 year terms. That wasn’t going to happen. Coach Friend will probably be an improvement, but a big time OL coach was not coming here. And looking at Richt’s history of hiring, he wouldn’t do it anyway. He is very comfortable with relationship type under the radar hires. Just My 2 cents.

RMike, good post but thats why you are not coaching at the college or pro level. What makes you think they did not do their due diligence? They have been looking at candidates for 2 weeks. Its interesting at the idiots who post on here with zero intelligence. Funny you mentioned upper echelon NFL coaches. Why would you go from the big leagues to college unless it was to be a cordinator or head coach. So that takes the NFL out of play. Same thing goes for a lateral move. You do not take a lateral move unless it is to a better program and better pay. Sometimes even that doesn’t work. Your right Coach Richt should have contacted you and had you be his consultant for this hire.

Another recruiter type over hard nose coach. There will be peace in the valley but not wins on the scoreboard. One of the best unknown quarterbacks in the pros this year came out of Alabama-Birmingham, he was a rookie this year. Everybody was looking at this kid thinking he was another Cam Newton and where did he come from. Well he came from a team that had no offensive line in college and no one saw his skill because he was running for his life half his career. Richt loves that easy path.

GT, your name speaks for itself. Funny how you did no research at all. If you would have you would have seen that Joe Webb threw for almost 2300 yards. In order to throw the ball for that many yards he would have had to have a line to block for him. Funny, you mentioned him with Cam Newton. Joe Webb rushed for about 1400 yards and you mentioned cause he was running for his life however you did mention Cam Newton running for his life. I watched a lot of UAB games since I am an alum of UAB and can tell you he was a run first QB, and the lines blocked very well for the lack of talent.

If the Ealy thing is true all I can say is look at Saban’s first year at Bama. He told them what was expected, how it was going to be, and that’s the way it was going to be. Those who didn’t buy in were weeded out pretty quickly. Maybe Richt and McGarity have adopted that philosophy.

I have heard that Ealey missed a punishment run, but I have no idea what he was punished for, or if it is leading to wanting to leave the team. King and Ealey have not been exactly dedicated to UGA, as far as their education and team loyalty go. If the young Mr. Crowell can get up to speed fast, they might, if they even stick around, find they are sharing time with this young man, and if he is good enough-fast enough, they might see extended pine riding time. I personally hope that Ealey straigthens up but I have my doubts, at least from what I have read, that King wants to’ or can, at this point.

I have no doubt that Saban in his first year made a point about how he wants things done. New coach, school had been through a few staffs, which you would think would create some sloppiness. But as I recall, the big news about him cleaning house involved some pretty bad deals, that Nobody would have put up with. One guy was selling cocaine it the parking lot. That’s not exactly Saban’s Law! stuff there. We have also become quite aware of the (fair or not) practises of how he makes rooms for guys. So who really knows. I’m sure he culled a few.
I obviously brought some order to that team, and his results on the field are a good indication. But I don’t know if he really does, or knows anything that everybody else doesn’t. I have a feeling that the conference as a whole would all over those secrets, if there were any. You can’t punish any greater than to kick folks off the team, and suspend them.
I don’t really see any Ol’Miss (just as example, pick any other) players in the news for stuff either. Nutt doesn’t exactly strike me as a ballbuster.
I know damn well they don’t drive any better,or hate beer, in Miss and Alabama, or South Dakota.. There is more to it than coach control. I get the feeling sometimes the Uga administration is more concerned about appearing to be something as they are actually stopping the nonsense distractions. (Damon Evan’s PSA says it all).
We know for a fact that UF has had some instances (that are headlines the same night in Atlanta) that nobody know about til somebody caught up to the story from a rival town. Good for them. And good for Saban for handling it “in house”.

Rome: “Coach, you’ve had 10 players arrested during this (2010)
off-season and over 40 players arrested or in various trouble with the law in the past 3 years. Is there a discipline problem at UGA?”
Richt: “No. There is not a discipline problem here at Georgia.”
Man, you just cant make this BS up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta love the morons. You idiots _________________(fill in name) would not be pleased with anything that is done by the coaches at UGA. If King and Ealey have indeed, played thier last down for UGA, it is their fault. How in the world kids can give up a chance to get a free ride to a major university or college, just because they act immature and can’t keep out of trouble, I don’t know.
Sometimes, you just can’t do enough for some of these folks, who refuse to do the right thing, given their God given talent and the chances it gives them. It appears that they would probably have ended up as blotter fodder this year anyway.

Wow, Ealey is already labeled a THUG cause he missed a discipline run and practice. WOW, you people just amaze me. You do know that both him and Caleb King were highly sought after in high school. That goes for Georgia Tech as well. They both were offered and recieved interest from Tech.

Neither Ealy nor King were ever offered by Tech.
Neither ever had clearance from Tech admiistration
for an offer to be extended.
What a lying tool.

ATL Sports Fan that’s correct but at some point they have to hold up their end of the bargain, they have both been guilty of various off field instances. They at some point have to be held accountable, missing punishment runs, drills etc is a big deal..I don’t think they are thugs they have never done anything violent, drug related etc but they just won’t do right…hope they can turn it around we need them if they will toe the line…if not well Statesboro is not long drive.

I just read where ESPN has a story that Ealey has been suspended indefinitly from the team and will not be allowed to use the facilities. He has supposedly not been kicked off the team yet. He just can’t practice or use any of the facilities.
Sopposedly though, the Asst. Athletic Directer will not confirm or deny the story. And to think, I thought those guys would never make good politicians.

why is UGA forced to hire these no name coaches from little schools? Can’t they attract some big names from top programs in the SEC and around the country?? I need a drink.

I talked with Vasi’s father today at work. Vasi “Tombstone” Papulu has been Accepted at San Joaquin Delta College in norhtern California. They have a well respected JC football team. So, for now, Tombstone is a Delta College Mustang.

I’m pretty sure everyone here (I’m talking to UGA fans) would love to see Ealey and King get their heads screwed on straight and start living up to all the hyped up expectations. It’s absolutely justified to vent your disappointment on these blogs because that’s what these blogs are for. That being said, barring any more bonehead moves by these two, they should have every opportunity to compete for their spots on the rotation.
