ATHENS — Georgia didn’t waste any time posting the job opening created by Warren Belin’s resignation Thursday as inside linebackers coach. The position was posted Friday on the UGA employment website.
What’s interesting, though, is that the “replacement” position is advertised as a defensive ends coach, not an inside linebackers coach.
From the posting: “This position serves as Assistant Coach in the area of Defensive Ends.”
That would seem to suggest some sort of reshuffling of responsibilities is at least being contemplated on the defensive staff.
Update from an interview Saturday with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham: Georgia “obviously could go a couple different ways” in filling the position, Grantham said. “We’re basically in the process of looking at it right now,” he said. “We’re going to hire the best person for Georgia and the best fit for Georgia.” But as for the job posting clearly identifying the opening as defensive ends coach, Grantham said: “I wouldn’t put any stock in that. We’re going to hire the best person for Georgia.”
Georgia last had a “defensive ends coach,” per se, in 2009, when Jon Fabris held that title. After Fabris and two other defensive coaches were fired, and after Georgia changed its base defense, defensive line coach Rodney Garner expanded his responsibilities from coaching the two defensive-tackle positions in the old 4-3 alignment to coaching the nose tackle position and the two end positions in the new 3-4. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham coached the outside linebackers and Belin the inside linebackers.
Belin’s departure for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers left Georgia with two openings on its staff, although the offensive-line coaching position is expected to be filled by Monday or Tuesday, if not before. Chatter continued Friday that UAB’s Will Friend might be in line for that job. More info on Friend is here.
The Panthers, by the way, officially announced Belin’s hire as linebackers coach on Friday. The news release noted that Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was a player at William & Mary when Belin was an assistant coach there in 1995-96.

I like the upheaval going on at UGA. Any fine tuned organization needs change to keep it fresh. Richt and Todd Granthom will find what they are looking for. I am convinced that with Greg McGarity as puppetier, UGA is going NOW in the right direction.
If JJ commits today, then with a hard summer camp and continued weight pounding, UGA will be a load in 2011.
Pollack had high energy but would the kids embrace that? He is a motivator for sure. Goldberg would be a great coach too, as he is a tough customer and he could really put on the “face” of a kick a– coach.

Can’t beat panagos, he’s the perfect guy for the job, his d-lines are tough to run on, they get a lot of sacks, his guys have made all-conference like Belin’s, he coached Special teams at Minnesota in the NFL and could handle that, plus, Richt knows how tough he is, UGA got whooped by UCF’s D-Line.
I also like that he did a sales job for 4 years, good thing for a recruiter to know how to do is persuade.

The 3-4 DE is different from the 4-3 DE in terms of responsibilities and technique. A coach with 3-4 DE experience would be the right pick, other things being equal.

My guess is, if Grantham wants an LB coach, he’ll go get his ole Dallas buddy Nguyen, really hard to beat, got to be the #1 choice. If he wants a D-Line coach that’s brutal on run defense, I’d say look to UCF, Richt likes to grab defensive guys from other conferences he has played against (like Willie and Van Gorder). If he’s looking for a 3-4 DE coach, Jeffcoat might be the frontrunner.
You gotta move quick if you want one of these guys.

if espn and 680 are paying that kind of money to pollock, they aren’t getting a very good return. I can see 680 making a poor decision like that, but not espn.

Too many postion coaches in football? What I really don’t get is basketball. When they call a timeout, there are more gray suits on the court than players. Beyond a head coach and one assistant, what the heck do all these do everyday? Does it take half a dozen coaches to run the team through some drills?

Kinda funny how fast nationally competitive teams such as FL or AL can fill coaching positions, yet UGA the regional SEC wonder tends to get the 4th guy on the list weeks later.
That says a lot about the UGA Football program. Then again, getting your butt kicked by Central Auto Body and HVAC College says a lot too.

Andy, go back to your UAB blog. CMR WILL find a couple of good coaches. The problem is the departures happened during or right after recruiting/Natl Signing Day. CMR was concentrating on that and now he can focus on hiring.
And to all who talk down on UCF: actually UCF is the largest university in the country, by student body. Fifty-something thousand students. And, actually, I wouldn’t mind them joining the SEC and letting Vandy go to the Big East or somewhere else more appropriate to their size and status.

I have heard several names tossed around for the new OL coach, but not Markuson from Ole Miss. He was with Nutt at Arkansas and followed to Ole Miss. Each year at Ole Miss, his rush yards per game have increased, I think they ranked 3rd inSEC this year. Any reason he is not a candidate? Seems like Uga would be a better situation for him, and Nutt’s future at Ole Miss doesn’t look all that bright.

@Sugar Hill Dawg……..You sir, are a dadgum fooll !!……….”Old Coach” pretty much spelled out the facts of life regarding coaching in college football. It is about damn time all of the “experts” on these blogs shut the hell up and support your Georgia coaching staff. I would challenge any “knowitall ” to just do a little study of cycles in college football, and if you do, you will find that coach Mark Richt knows what he is doing. So if you can’t give him your support, find another “in style” team to support. There will always be cycles in college football, always have been, always will. Just look around at some of the elite teams struggling today, Chemistry, thus winning attitude usually starts with the fan base…….All you crybabies, and bed wetters, just put a lid on it, Georgia is cycling up as we speak……….so if you have a gripe, please give your coaching experience as a preface, or simply shut the hell up…………You are not helping the situation !…………Regards, RED

Friend will be a good replacement as he has already spent a couple of seasons on the UGA staff as a grad asst.
Still haven’t heard why Coach Searals was so unhappy at UGA. $$$ may have been the only reason he left but if he left b/cause of pressure of coaching in the SEC, the Texas folks will really put the pressure on him to coach.
As far as him being Running game cordinator, I’ve been to nearly every game he coached at UGA and have never seen him spend a minute with the RB’s. Never seen him send one in the game or take one out, why was this his position at UGA. Looks like the RB coach should hold this title.
