A ‘Friend’ as OL coach? Dogs No. 18?

A few quick notes this morning . . .

  • There’s some chatter that Will Friend could become Georgia’s next offensive line coach, although no word — nor indication of imminent word — from UGA. Just in case, here’s a bit of background on Friend:

As an offensive guard at Alabama in the 1990s, he was a four-year starter and a two-time All-SEC player. He was named to Alabama’s Team of the Decade. He has been UAB’s offensive line coach for the past four years and before that was offensive line coach at Gardner-Webb for two years. UAB’s head coach is Neil Callaway, a former offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Georgia. In fact, Friend helped Callaway with Georgia’s offensive line for two years as a graduate assistant.

  • Georgia has sold out of reserved seats for Saturday’s men’s basketball game against Auburn in Stegeman Coliseum. Student tickets remain available, but Georgia expects a fifth consecutive sellout by the 1:30 p.m. tipoff.

If Georgia gets the opportunity to hire Will Friend then Hire him! I personally know him, his work ethic, his drive and his attitude. I had the opportunity to see Will grow from his freshmen year to All SEC his junior and senior years, and he probably should have been All SEC his Sophomore year at Alabama.

Will Friend will make every coach around him work harder, and he is one of those guys who brings passion to the game while teaching the young men to be responsible on and off the field.

He has the ability to one day be a great Offensive Coordinator and those who knew Will from his previous stint at UGA as a graduate assistant can verify his character and his work ethic.

Excellent Excellent Choice, if he is hired.

UAB’s offensive line allowed only 12 sacks in 12 games (15th in the country) with far inferior talent and against good competition. May be a good addition, he make work harder than a “big name” to prove he belongs. Time will tell. However, I’m more intrigued into who Grantham is going to bring in for the defensive side. I have tried to stay off these blogs as they seem to have become very ugly with insults, but I will add a little outside perspective that you can take with a grain of salt.

Georgia is a fine fine school, with an illustrious football history. However, do not think for a moment that coaches do not read newspapers, talk among themselves and know the status of current coaches around the country. Mark Richt may be on very solid ground with Dr. Adams and the new AD McGarity, but the fact is the word “hotseat” has been bantered around for quite some time now surrounding Mark Richt. It would be extremely hard for an established line coach who is currently employed at a school to pick up his family and move to Athens with all the print, and media talking heads stating that “Mark Ricth is on the Hot Seat in every article or conversation.”

Georgia and the current staff know their limitations currentlty and hiring a “hungry” coach who wants to make his mark is the way Georgia is probably going to have to go.

Good Luck to Georgia in hiring the right guy. I just think Will Friend is one of those guys who will bring a new paradigm and attitude to the current staff and program at Georgia.

First off, What do mean a BIG name OL coach? Can anyone spout off the old coach for the top 5 teams in the country. Didn’t think so. I remember reading the names of Richt’s staff when he was hired and thout…who the hell us Van Gorder and Callaway? Then I realized when I watch college ball, the last thing I wonder is “wow look at that lineman block…who’s coaching that guy? ” Coaches move around and their philosophy needs to match the coaches around them to be successful. Everyone is all “good riddance” about Searls, yet he’s coached on NC teams and Texas gave him a huge raise to go there.

Now…if Richt does nit turn this around and we need to hire another coach…is Kirby Smart your BIG NAME? Really? Really? IMO he us the same as Bobo. A coordinator that runs the head coach’s system, not their own. Only reason Smart is successful is cause he has followed Savannah around from LSU to NFL to bama running saban system. Wow …Great observation through all the rose colored glasses with comparisons of Urban and Van Gorder. Heres the thing these Gump Goobers fail to mention is that those two coaches already had impeccable track records as a head coach and coordinators. We are talking about a position coach here.

C’mon Dawg fans.

I would MUCH rather have a well-qualified coach from a small school, than an over hyped coach, who well……can’t coach.

Searles was supposed to be the best thing since satellite tv, but look how well our “O” line turned out. We were all back slappin’ and stuff after we hired him. He sucked.

Let’s give this guy a chance to prove himself. Maybe he can coach.

SEC Fact Finder
Thanks for the information on Friend . He seems like an up and comer.
I have a problem with the current way coaches are hired. I hate losing Belin as linebacker coach and I’m sure some of the new recruit’s that were on the fence have a problem with it to. If you find a real good coach like Belin I think you should sign him to a 3 year contract for what he is worth. If CMR can make 3 million per year then established coordinators are worth half that, or 1.5 million, with a 3 year contract. Established position coaches should also get a 3 year contract and make at least 500K per year. This would keep good coaches like Belin from going somewhere else and WOULD MAKE OUR AD THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE THEY HIRE SOMEONE.
I’m sure that Friend will be a good up and comer but if he does good next year then he will be hired away by someone else willing to pay a little more and then we will be in the same bind that we are today. Money talk’s and If we were to report that we are willing to pay 500K per year for our position coaches and give them a 3 year contract I can guarantee we will get candidates that make the current list look like Pee Wee coaches.
That’s how we know how unqualified Bobo is to be coordinator . I think even Bobo’s wife, the biggest supporter would agree he is not worth 1.5 million. But he gets a lot of that money back because I would pay him 500K as a quarterback coach and then pay him another 500 K as head recruiter. There should only be 2 coordinators: Defensive and Offensive coordinators.

We need to stay away from the GA Southern Coach. They took those llittle short lineman they had, changed from a passing attach back to the running game and ended up third best team in their NCAA championship division…That may effect our passing game too much by coaching the line to block for a run. It is not like the guy cannot coach pass blocking.

Their “Option” has returned. I just hope Tech never gets enough receivers and a QB that can throw out of that offense. I will have to say looks like GSU’s defense did the job this year, something VG should have done when he went there. Instead of improving the defense for a best running program in the FCS division he threw out the option, and still had a poor defense. He really stunk up the place with his “There is no Option” deal down there. Not asking the team to go to Erk’s funeral was not a good choice by VG either. He really did a job on Green Bay a few weeks ago for the Falcons

That alone makes me think that you are not UGA fans, but other teams fans and just stirring the pot! How about being positive and let’s judge a coach and player after they have played some games! Trust me, I’m not and you are NOT going to influence what decisions are made by blogging on this website! You will get some laughs from us, but you won’t effect a thing at UGA. Thuga,

“chop block”? Searles didn’t teach anyone to chop block. The 2 times it got called against UGA was because the D-lineman engaged with the offensive linemen that was on the interior line as the ball was snapped. The O-lineman DIRECTLY infront of that D-lineman did try to “cut block”. If the d-lineman decides to shift at the snap of the ball instead of taking on the O-lineman in front of him, that can happen. Getting called for a chop block constitutes being a thug? I guess that would make all GT O-Linemen thugs.

Greg Mcgarity PLEASE do not let CMR hire another friend and mediocre coach! The only way the UGA can return to greatness is to start getting top notch dedicated coaches back in the program that are allowed to coach their respective positions w/o CMR telling them what to do! Todd Granham showed excellent potential in the Spring game and the outset of the 2010 season, however, he was reprimanded by CMR and told to “Cool It” and show less emotions. I really would like Georgia to hire the best possible candidate, who-ever that may be. I am sure Coach Richt and his staff have assured the players that are at Georgia they will be put into a situation with a new coaches that allows them to be the best they can be.

I say to the new recruits, stay the course, you thought Georgia was the right place for you. Georgia coaches have tremendous respect for you and your individual abililties or they would not have target you as they did.

I’m confident that as things unfold you will find that the “right” coaches will be hired to move the program forward and to assist in future developments of your abililties to contribute in a positive and rewarding manner.

I believe that there’s a reason you guys are at Georgia. I personally believe all of you have a unbelievable opportunity to be part of something special that will be recorded in Georgia history in a positive manner.

As a die-hard Georgia fan…Thanks for becoming a Bulldog and to all of you and your teammates-make it happen, bring Georgia back. Good Luck!!!

It’s funny that it seems that a lot of people here have the solution of what Georgia needs and have in their mind the perfect coach for the OL. Here is my idea, if you’re a true Dawg fan how about support your team and trust they will make the best selection. I’m sure the staff puts more time in evaluating the potential coaches than most of you do by just searching the internet.

I also think it’s funny now that we received a very talented recruiting class there are a lot more haters from fans from other schools wanting to bash us….I think it’s cute, it just goes to show UGA has more to talk about than their own school.

Brissett is signing w/ Fla tonight according to Gatorzone……But they still have like 7 openings left…..Muschamp said he would not sign players this year for the sake of just filling up spots and save them till next year….So they do have room left for JJ if necessary………..The vibe in Gainsville is hes all dawg

This may be unpopular, but can’t we hire Willie Martinez as an offensive line coach. He knows Richt’s system very well. DC job was over his head, but he is still a very good coach. He can recruit well. I think if he learns and studies offense, there is no telling him good he will be.

ESPN is reporting the following candidates as possible OL coaching hires,

Greg Adkins:
Adkins, who just finished his second season as Syracuse’s offensive line coach, was a member of former Georgia coach Jim Donnan’s staff from 1996 to 2000. Adkins also coached offensive lines at Marshall, Troy and Tennessee. He is regarded among the best recruiters in the country, helping sign future NFL players DeMarcus Ware at Troy, Boss and Champ Bailey and Will Witherspoon at Georgia and Erik Ainge at Tennessee.

Will Friend:
Friend, a four-year starting guard at Alabama from 1993-96, just finished his fourth season as UAB’s offensive line coach. Friend was hired at UAB by former Georgia offensive line coach Neil Callaway. A native of Philadelphia, Miss., Friend also coached the offensive line at Gardner-Webb in North Carolina. Under Friend’s direction, the Blazers ranked 15th nationally in sacks allowed, giving up only 12 in 12 games.

Brent Key:
Key, a former starting guard at Georgia Tech from 1997-2000, has worked the past six seasons for George O’Leary at Central Florida. A native of Trussville, Ala., Key worked the past two seasons as the Knights’ offensive line coach and the previous four as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. UCF finished 10-3 in 2010, beating Georgia 10-6 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

Mac McWhorter:
A 1974 graduate of Georgia, McWhorter spent the past nine seasons as Texas’ offensive line coach. He was one of four assistants not retained by Texas coach Mack Brown after the Longhorns finished 5-7 in 2010. McWhorter worked on Ray Goff’s UGA staff from 1991-95 and also was interim head coach at Georgia Tech in 2001. McWhorter has more than 35 years of coaching experience and also worked at Memphis, Clemson, Duke and Alabama.

PETA needs to get involved in the death of these animals. No dog should be subjected to having to watch this footbabll team. It’s cruelty at it’s best.

WOW….How original, like we never heard that one before. At least we don’t have trouble getting people to come watch our games.

I want to send my condolences to the Bulldawg Nation in your time of loss of UGA VIII.
Having lost my 8 year old English Bulldog this past year, I know the feeling , the English Bulldog is a one of a kind animal. Sympathies to the Nation and my SEC brothers. Good Dogs do not die, they live forever in our memories.

Instead of worrying about paying off sissy coaches to leave, UGA needs to switch mascots from those weak, useless inbred bulldogs with no stamina to a real bulldog with lots of fight and guts and spirit.–the pit bulldog. All these Ugas with their aristocratic lineage send the wrong idea of UGA sports–that of a bunch of pantywaists instead of real fighters like the pitbull. That will put some spitfire into the fans and players.

Lets give CMR the benefit of his own knowlege about what he wants at UGA. His coaches don’t fade away, with the exception of the two that left in CWM and “that DE coach whom was an awful special team coach, most of CMR coaches have moved UP in stature since they left. Belin is going to the NFL as BVG did. Mark Richt knows what he is doing. So relax.

I wish we would think about running a 2 tight end set more often this year. We are very strong a tight end. We will be weaker at wide receiver this year. This will help out with blocking for run plays and give us two targets to throw too.

Also, I think that Friend would be a good O-line coach. I think that he can could get some push out of the O-line this year too. They have got to block better.

As for Bobo, his play calling is weak. He never stretches the field, never throws to the backs, bearly throws the ball to the ends, runs poor screen plays and runs to much on 3rd and long. His backs and receivers need to have a fire put under them to get them to show some heart and break so tackles.

[...] Belin’s departure for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers left Georgia with two openings on its staff, although the offensive-line coaching position is expected to be filled by Monday or Tuesday, if not before. Chatter continued Friday that UAB’s Will Friend might be in line for that job. More info on Friend is here. [...]

Friend has been a student of football since a young man. His Dad was his high school coach and he ate and slept football as soon as he could walk. Friend will bring to the program a great deal of enthusiasm and insight into the game. He is calm on the field and relates well with the players. Good hire.

Friend is intense and takes no crap. He is reportedly fun but firm. Spoken to a few players that
have played on teams where he coached and hear nothing but great things. SS was supposed to
be the answer and a big name but did not do much. He could be great. Just be cool.
