A few quick notes this morning . . .
As an offensive guard at Alabama in the 1990s, he was a four-year starter and a two-time All-SEC player. He was named to Alabama’s Team of the Decade. He has been UAB’s offensive line coach for the past four years and before that was offensive line coach at Gardner-Webb for two years. UAB’s head coach is Neil Callaway, a former offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Georgia. In fact, Friend helped Callaway with Georgia’s offensive line for two years as a graduate assistant.

He has some good stats at UAB and Gardner Webb.
Will Friend: Friend, a four-year starting guard at Alabama from 1993-96, just finished his fourth season as UAB’s offensive line coach. Friend was hired at UAB by former Georgia offensive line coach Neil Callaway. A native of Philadelphia, Miss., Friend also coached the offensive line at Gardner-Webb in North Carolina. Under Friend’s direction, the Blazers ranked 15th nationally in sacks allowed, giving up only 12 in 12 games

I was not expecting this. I don’t know how to pick a O-Line coach so I guess I need to trust CMR. I was expecting a big time name I guess or even a middle tiered name. Never heard of this guy before. Of course I never heard of CVG before he went to UGA either so let’s hope he comes from the same cut.
Anyone have any inside scoop on whether Jenkins will be a dawg or a gator tomorrow?

Greg Mcgarity PLEASE do not let CMR hire another friend and mediocre coach! The only way the UGA can return to greatness is to start getting top notch dedicated coaches back in the program that are allowed to coach their respective positions w/o CMR telling them what to do! Todd Granham showed excellent potential in the Spring game and the outset of the 2010 season, however, he was reprimanded by CMR and told to “Cool It” and show less emotions. As a result we ended the year with a pathetic defense!
HIRE RALPH FRIGDEN or HUGH NALL PLEASE!

Preseason rankings are like a box of chocolates. You never know what your going to get at the end of the season. Let the UGA fans started their “preseason” bragging. Before the season starts is when the UGA nation is the most vocal. They get real quiet when they walk out of the Gator Bowl in J’ville!

Haven’t been around them much, have you? Turning on their own is what they are most noted for. Ask one-time bama hero Mike Shula what he thinks of the Tuskalosers at this point, and what he thinks of the way he was treated by The Powers over there.
bammers only care about their last win. Anything beyond that is up for grabs. “Eats their young” is another description for “bammer”.

I really would like Georgia to hire the best possible candidate, who-ever that may be. I am sure Coach Richt and his staff have assured the players that are at Georgia they will be put into a situation with a new coaches that allows them to be the best they can be.
I say to the new recruits, stay the course, you thought Georgia was the right place for you. Georgia coaches have tremendous respect for you and your individual abililties or they would not have target you as they did.
I’m confident that as things unfold you will find that the “right” coaches will be hired to move the program forward and to assist in future developments of your abililties to contribute in a positive and rewarding manner.
I believe that there’s a reason you guys are at Georgia. I personally believe all of you have a unbelievable opportunity to be part of something special that will be recorded in Georgia history in a positive manner.
As a die-hard Georgia fan…Thanks for becoming a Bulldog and to all of you and your teammates-make it happen, bring Georgia back. Good Luck!!!

It’s funny that it seems that a lot of people here have the solution of what Georgia needs and have in their mind the perfect coach for the OL. Here is my idea, if you’re a true Dawg fan how about support your team and trust they will make the best selection. I’m sure the staff puts more time in evaluating the potential coaches than most of you do by just searching the internet.
I also think it’s funny now that we received a very talented recruiting class there are a lot more haters from fans from other schools wanting to bash us….I think it’s cute, it just goes to show UGA has more to talk about than their own school.

This may be unpopular, but can’t we hire Willie Martinez as an offensive line coach. He knows Richt’s system very well. DC job was over his head, but he is still a very good coach. He can recruit well. I think if he learns and studies offense, there is no telling him good he will be.

ESPN is reporting the following candidates as possible OL coaching hires,
Greg Adkins:
Adkins, who just finished his second season as Syracuse’s offensive line coach, was a member of former Georgia coach Jim Donnan’s staff from 1996 to 2000. Adkins also coached offensive lines at Marshall, Troy and Tennessee. He is regarded among the best recruiters in the country, helping sign future NFL players DeMarcus Ware at Troy, Boss and Champ Bailey and Will Witherspoon at Georgia and Erik Ainge at Tennessee.
Will Friend:
Friend, a four-year starting guard at Alabama from 1993-96, just finished his fourth season as UAB’s offensive line coach. Friend was hired at UAB by former Georgia offensive line coach Neil Callaway. A native of Philadelphia, Miss., Friend also coached the offensive line at Gardner-Webb in North Carolina. Under Friend’s direction, the Blazers ranked 15th nationally in sacks allowed, giving up only 12 in 12 games.
Brent Key:
Key, a former starting guard at Georgia Tech from 1997-2000, has worked the past six seasons for George O’Leary at Central Florida. A native of Trussville, Ala., Key worked the past two seasons as the Knights’ offensive line coach and the previous four as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. UCF finished 10-3 in 2010, beating Georgia 10-6 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Mac McWhorter:
A 1974 graduate of Georgia, McWhorter spent the past nine seasons as Texas’ offensive line coach. He was one of four assistants not retained by Texas coach Mack Brown after the Longhorns finished 5-7 in 2010. McWhorter worked on Ray Goff’s UGA staff from 1991-95 and also was interim head coach at Georgia Tech in 2001. McWhorter has more than 35 years of coaching experience and also worked at Memphis, Clemson, Duke and Alabama.

Instead of worrying about paying off sissy coaches to leave, UGA needs to switch mascots from those weak, useless inbred bulldogs with no stamina to a real bulldog with lots of fight and guts and spirit.–the pit bulldog. All these Ugas with their aristocratic lineage send the wrong idea of UGA sports–that of a bunch of pantywaists instead of real fighters like the pitbull. That will put some spitfire into the fans and players.

Lets give CMR the benefit of his own knowlege about what he wants at UGA. His coaches don’t fade away, with the exception of the two that left in CWM and “that DE coach whom was an awful special team coach, most of CMR coaches have moved UP in stature since they left. Belin is going to the NFL as BVG did. Mark Richt knows what he is doing. So relax.

I wish we would think about running a 2 tight end set more often this year. We are very strong a tight end. We will be weaker at wide receiver this year. This will help out with blocking for run plays and give us two targets to throw too.
Also, I think that Friend would be a good O-line coach. I think that he can could get some push out of the O-line this year too. They have got to block better.
As for Bobo, his play calling is weak. He never stretches the field, never throws to the backs, bearly throws the ball to the ends, runs poor screen plays and runs to much on 3rd and long. His backs and receivers need to have a fire put under them to get them to show some heart and break so tackles.

Chatter continued Friday that UAB’s Will Friend might be in line for that job. More info on Friend is here. [...]

Friend has been a student of football since a young man. His Dad was his high school coach and he ate and slept football as soon as he could walk. Friend will bring to the program a great deal of enthusiasm and insight into the game. He is calm on the field and relates well with the players. Good hire.

Friend is intense and takes no crap. He is reportedly fun but firm. Spoken to a few players that
have played on teams where he coached and hear nothing but great things. SS was supposed to
be the answer and a big name but did not do much. He could be great. Just be cool.
