A ‘Friend’ as OL coach? Dogs No. 18?

A few quick notes this morning . . .

  • There’s some chatter that Will Friend could become Georgia’s next offensive line coach, although no word — nor indication of imminent word — from UGA. Just in case, here’s a bit of background on Friend:

As an offensive guard at Alabama in the 1990s, he was a four-year starter and a two-time All-SEC player. He was named to Alabama’s Team of the Decade. He has been UAB’s offensive line coach for the past four years and before that was offensive line coach at Gardner-Webb for two years. UAB’s head coach is Neil Callaway, a former offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Georgia. In fact, Friend helped Callaway with Georgia’s offensive line for two years as a graduate assistant.

  • Georgia has sold out of reserved seats for Saturday’s men’s basketball game against Auburn in Stegeman Coliseum. Student tickets remain available, but Georgia expects a fifth consecutive sellout by the 1:30 p.m. tipoff.

Hmmmm….. How good was UAB’s offensive line? (or, how bad would they have been without Mr. Friend…??!?!)

I hope “Friend” is a good candidate cuz we sure need it…Question, why are we not going after BIG NAME prospects for OL coach…wtf?

We could hire the actor Willem Dafoe as LB coach. Then, we would have all bases covered — friend and foe.

This is just Great ! Another mickey mouse hire from a mickey mouse football program. Richt should go ahead and hire the LB coach from Central Florida or even South Carolina who both helped keep UGA out of the endzone. Pathetic…..

I would be satisfied with the hire…..Soulds like he has good credentials…….He was one good offensive lineman…..

We need someone who has proven they can produce at UGA. CMR should hire David Johnson who used to coach TE at UGA.

Just because he is from a small school doesnt mean anything.
I have seen a lot of coaches at major colleges that I have to wonder how in the world they got hired. In fact most coaches today have no understanding of strategy at all.

I agree – a big NAME is not needed, but an outstanding COACH is needed. That’s why I asked — how good are the O-lines at UAB??! I still like the William Dafoe idea as LB coach, just for the promotional opportunities — friend and foe…. OK, never mind. I’m tired of the cold winter…..

If Georgia gets the opportunity to hire Will Friend then Hire him! I personally know him, his work ethic, his drive and his attitude. I had the opportunity to see Will grow from his freshmen year to All SEC his junior and senior years, and he probably should have been All SEC his Sophomore year at Alabama.

Will Friend will make every coach around him work harder, and he is one of those guys who brings passion to the game while teaching the young men to be responsible on and off the field.

He has the ability to one day be a great Offensive Coordinator and those who knew Will from his previous stint at UGA as a graduate assistant can verify his character and his work ethic.

Excellent Excellent Choice, if he is hired.

UAB’s offensive line allowed only 12 sacks in 12 games (15th in the country) with far inferior talent and against good competition. May be a good addition, he make work harder than a “big name” to prove he belongs. Time will tell. However, I’m more intrigued into who Grantham is going to bring in for the defensive side. GO DAWGS!

We’re hiring a coach from UAB? Really? Richt needs to do whatever he has to do to get Hugh Nall as the OL coach. A Georgia man, whose offensive lines at AU were outstanding, as well as nasty! Not to mention, he is an outstanding recruiter. Who do you think recruited most (4 out of 5) of that incredible O line that Auburn had last year? HUGH NALL HUGH NALL HUGH NALL!!!!

This would be a good hire. Friend was not only a great lineman at Alabama, but he’s worked closely under one of the elite OL coaches in the country in Callaway, who did a great job at Georgia.

Seems like Will Friend has a good pedigree. I’m sure that whoever he hires, Coach Richt will get the best OL coach available for UGA. With our new strength and conditioning program, hopefully we’ll have stronger and better conditioned players that our new OL coach can actually coach to play as a cohesive unit. … Go Dawgs!

If anyone has the opportunity to go and watch the UAB game against Tennessee, please do.
The offensive line at UAB laid the wood to the Tennessee defense all day and the UAB defense gave up the game at the end in Overtime.

That might be a good reference point on comparing his OL who has the third of the talent as most SEC teams.

He sounds qualified, but I have no idea why he would want to work with Bobo. Searles was an all star at LSU and then he comes to work with Bobo at UGA and his unit routinely underachieves. Coincidence? I think not.

Hiring Manny Diaz as DC from a small school worked out pretty well for MSU last year and he’s already been plucked to Texas, so I’m not worried about the small school aspect. We’ll just have to see what happens.

Congrats to Fox’s hounds on a tough road win Wednesday after another grueling expedition in messed up travel. Looking forward to get a notch over .500 in the SEC tomorrow and already matching last year’s SEC win total with a lot of bball left to play.

I have tried to stay off these blogs as they seem to have become very ugly with insults, but I will add a little outside perspective that you can take with a grain of salt.

Georgia is a fine fine school, with an illustrious football history. However, do not think for a moment that coaches do not read newspapers, talk among themselves and know the status of current coaches around the country. Mark Richt may be on very solid ground with Dr. Adams and the new AD McGarity, but the fact is the word “hotseat” has been bantered around for quite some time now surrounding Mark Richt. It would be extremely hard for an established line coach who is currently employed at a school to pick up his family and move to Athens with all the print, and media talking heads stating that “Mark Ricth is on the Hot Seat in every article or conversation.”

Georgia and the current staff know their limitations currentlty and hiring a “hungry” coach who wants to make his mark is the way Georgia is probably going to have to go.

Good Luck to Georgia in hiring the right guy. I just think Will Friend is one of those guys who will bring a new paradigm and attitude to the current staff and program at Georgia.
