UGA assistant coach leaves for NFL
Warren Belin is leaving the Georgia football coaching staff after just one season for the NFL.
Belin, the Bulldogs’ inside linebackers coach, has resigned to accept a position as a defensive assistant coach with the Carolina Panthers, UGA senior associate athletic director Claude Felton confirmed.
Belin, 43, joined the Georgia staff in February 2010 from Vanderbilt, where he coached linebackers for eight years. A native of Marshville, N. C., and a graduate of Wake Forest, Belin has 20 years of college coaching experience, also having worked at Cornell, East Tennessee State, William & Mary and SMU.
“Warren made some outstanding contributions to our team and program in his year with us,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement Thursday night, “and we wish him the very best in his new role with the Panthers.”
In addition to coaching inside linebackers at Georgia, Belin was in charge of the Bulldogs’ kickoff coverage unit, which ranked first in the SEC last season.
Belin joined the Georgia staff two days after last year’s national signing day and departed one day after this year’s signing day. Georgia signed three inside linebackers Wednesday: Amarlo Herrera of College Park (North Clayton High School), Kent Turene of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., and Ramik Wilson of Tampa.

McGarity’s gamble FAILED.
McGarity hoped he could not extend Richt’s contract, yet retian all coaches.
Already seen 2 drop out in 2 weeks.
Could lose more coaches, AND recruits.

McGarity’s counter offer must not look appealing. Probably offering 1 year contracts, for $150,000 less per year than the competition.

I did get some info on Travis Jones former assistant under Nick Saban real good with 3-4 under Saban as a LB coach this would be an excellent hire to replace Belin we need to get Travis Jones .

Its part of the change. Any other coach want to leave get out, now. The timing couldnt be better recruiting 2011 class is just about over. New class, new young blood coaches, new energy level. We want coaches that want to be here. We dont want coaches that think they are irreplaceable (sp)Go Dawgs!

Good luck Coach Belin, I for one thought our LB’s and Kick coverage was the most improved of any of our positions this season.
Looks like someone in the NFL took notice as well.
I’m sure this was already in the works before recruiting was over just waiting until afterward to make the announcment to keep from maybe losing some recruits.
Who know’s maybe he was the reason some of these LB recruits were coming to UGA.
Never know I guess.

My God people! Do you really think that CMR is going to have a hard time hiring excellent coaches to replace the departed? He’s already said that his phone has been blowing up since Searels left with great coaches interested in replacing him. The LB coaching position will be no different. And as far as the Friedgren rumors…I would love to see him come in but I don’t expect it. He’s 63 years old and I think Richt is looking for younger guys to come in and work their way to head coaching positions or NFL opportunities.

Speaking of BoBo’s…there are plenty on this thread. On the day after the best day in Georgia football in some time the poison BS that is spewed by some is sad. If you hate Richt and staff then sit back and see what happens…spare the rest of us with your sad outlook on the future. If GA doesn’t perform and a change happens will that make you happy? I have a feeling some of you will not be happy regardless…you’ll never be happy with anything…they have pills for you.

I really feel sorry for all the people who consistently have not one positive word to say…about anything. It must be horrible to go through life and never have a positive thought. To lead such a waste of a life and then to try to push such negativity onto others is a disgrace to oneself. I pity you people, i honestly do. And it’s these same people who are advocates of gun usage. Go figure. It does scare me a bit though. So very sad.
The news of Belin leaving hurts, especially after all that happened yesterday. I do have faith that we will get good coaches into our system though. We ARE Georgia after all. Good luck to Belin.

By the way, i’m no expert, but from what i have seen reported for the past two weeks, Friedgen is not considering the position. I hope i’m wrong on this, but there isn’t anything to suggest otherwise.

This 1 really hurt! Belin is a good fundamental coach and it showed on the football field this pass season. There were less penalties by our lbs from the previous seasons and they played a lot smarter. I really like Belkin. I wish him well.

Good luck Coach Belin, but I didn’t see a lot of great linebacker play this year. Often looked flat footed and out of position. LB pass defense was weak. Middle of the field was wide open for short passes.

In Richt’s fine tradition of hiring ex-players(Bobo, McClendon) who have little in the way of qualifications for a job, he will probably do the same with this LB hire. Just like Bobo and McClendon, he won’t have to worry about anyone hiring the new coach away since they are completely out of their league. I’d like to think Richt has learned to quit hiring underqualified college buddies and ex-players since that is a big reason why he is in his current predicament, but Belin bailing on him after one year might make him revert back to his old habits.

What a bunch of PINHEADS here (especially you Joey and all your counteroffer talk crap!) talking about “leaving a sinking ship”, or for money etc. People change jobs for a variety of reasons and MONEY alone shouldn’t be the #1 reason and accepting counteroffers rarely work out in the long run…they eventually leave anyway or get fired once the employer finds a replacement first.
