UGA assistant coach leaves for NFL

Warren Belin is leaving the Georgia football coaching staff after just one season for the NFL.

Belin, the Bulldogs’ inside linebackers coach, has resigned to accept a position as a defensive assistant coach with the Carolina Panthers, UGA senior associate athletic director Claude Felton confirmed.

Belin, 43, joined the Georgia staff in February 2010 from Vanderbilt, where he coached linebackers for eight years.  A native of Marshville, N. C., and a graduate of Wake Forest, Belin has 20 years of college coaching experience, also having worked at Cornell, East Tennessee State, William & Mary and SMU.

“Warren made some outstanding contributions to our team and program in his year with us,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement Thursday night, “and we wish him the very best in his new role with the Panthers.”

In addition to coaching inside linebackers at Georgia, Belin was in charge of the Bulldogs’ kickoff coverage unit, which ranked first in the SEC last season.

Belin joined the Georgia staff two days after last year’s national signing day and departed one day after this year’s signing day. Georgia signed three inside linebackers Wednesday: Amarlo Herrera of College Park (North Clayton High School), Kent Turene of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., and Ramik Wilson of Tampa.

That stings. Wish he could have stayed around. Oh well, Grantham, go get someone new. I don’t think Belin knew how to run a 3-4 considering he had been around the 4-3 at Vandy. We’ll sign someone whose willing to take the job and run with it.

God, please let us hire someone that knows how to recruit and is a motivatior and can be one hell of a coach. We need to expedite the process on hiring coaches. I don’t know wha the policy is but, UGA seems to take a long time to make hires to the coaching staff. Good luck coach Belin. You did good things in your short time at UGA.

Jack bull, only on the offensive side of the ball and hopefully with a good hire for the OL Coach, that will change. The defense will look better this year, hopefully. Maybe Rambo will learn where he is supposed to be on every play.

Our LB play this year wasn’t all that good anyway. I look forward to seeing Jarvis & Samuals this year after sitting out last year. I can’t wait to see the new guys too. Grantham can now hand pick his guy. Good. GO DAWGS!!!

Let’s see….more money, no recruiting, not held responsible if your players act like idiots off the field and all off season off…now why would he want to go NFL?

This is not bad. Saves Richt from firing him next yr. Belin was soft and too passive to be a LB coach. Lakotos is the same way.

I dont understand the negative comments..he did a great job at Vandy with not much talent and at UGA I thought the linebacker play was good this yr given the new scheme. I dont know how involved or how successful he was in recruiting, but we got some good LBs yesterday.Did he have a lot to do with that?

CMR get someone young, energetic who wants to be apart of our system. Someone who will light a barn fire under the players but yet respectful to the coaching being received

Mark Richt is toast and the hype around the recruiting class is comical. Gotta be smart about talent and know how to coach’em up. Just being knowledgeable and living a charmd life as CMR has wont cut it.

We’ll get someone good. How much better looking was the defense in the first year of the new scheme? Remember Donnan and the offense in his first year? Remember Stafford and all the INT’s in his first year? UGA is still a premier school as the recruiting class has proved! Go Dawgs!!

This is what it looks like for an AD ot hand a Head Coach out to dry.

Poor assitant coaches, they have to look out for themselves, and since McGarity decided not to extend Richt’s contract, the guys just have no security or trust in McGarity.

Very sad.
