ATHENS –- Georgia coach Mark Richt was asked who first came up with the idea of pitching a “Dream Team” in recruiting.
“I really don’t remember whose idea it was,” he said.
“It was actually yours,” recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner said.
“It was my idea?” Richt said. “I didn’t want to take credit [if] someone else thought of it first.”
Georgia built its 2011 recruiting efforts, which culminated with Signing Day on Wednesday, around the high-profile notion of assembling a Dream Team of in-state talent. The Bulldogs wound up signing the state’s top three prospects, four of the top five and eight of the top 12.
The concept of a Dream Team was born almost a year ago as Georgia coaches embarked on what they knew would be a crucial recruiting season in a talent-rich state.
His memory jogged, Richt said: “As you’re looking at the guys you really want the most, you kind of dream about that as a coach, and that’s where I just came up with the idea: ‘This is my Dream Team. This is our Dream Team at the University of Georgia.’ We literally had names and pictures targeted that we could look at and shoot for, and we actually nailed it pretty good. You never get them all, but we came pretty darn close. And I would certainly say the dream came true.”
Richt said the concept resonated with recruits, who “bought in and got excited about it . . . and wanted to be on the Dream Team. I think it was effective.”
He acknowledged there was a risk of the concept backfiring if Georgia had signed a less-than-stellar class. In that case, he said, people might have “called it a nightmare class or whatever.”
“But we just said, ‘You know what? Let’s go for the best and go with reckless abandon and not care what anybody says.’”
Richt plans a Dream Team encore next year.
“Quite frankly, we’re in the process of putting together the 2012 Dream Team,” he said. “We’re formulating ideas and looking at film and deciding who’s going to be on that team.
“I hope ninth graders right now are looking at this thing and saying, ‘I want to be on that Dream Team when my time comes.’”
*********
Garner gave a lot of credit for the success of the Dream Team concept to Ray Drew, a five-star outside linebacker from Thomas County Central who not only signed with Georgia but enthusiastically lobbied other players to do so as well.
“Even though [last season] sort of tarnished us,” Garner said, “he was able to recognize that the University of Georgia is still gold. We just need to shine it up. We just need to get the glitter back.”
**********
Speaking to fans at the Butts-Mehre building, Richt offered some insight into recruiting in this state:
“One of the hardest things for us to do is to evaluate and nail down who you’re going to go after, especially in our own state. A lot of the out-of-state teams will just come in and just offer like mad. They’ll come in and just offer like candy. Quite frankly, I’m not going to name names of schools, but a lot of them will do that just to get in the fight. And if the kid commits too soon and they’re not sure they want [him], they’ll just tell them, ‘That’s not a committable offer.’ Whatever the heck that means.
“If we offer a kid in our state and he says he’s coming, we want to take him, OK? Sometimes we’re a little bit slower to offer maybe than some out-of-state schools. Sometimes that might hurt a kid’s feelings. Sometimes that might hurt a coach’s feelings. That’s not our intention. Our intention is to have integrity when we offer a kid and be able to follow through.”

Regardless of all of the rules of engagement and questionable ethics from out-of-state schools, etc. I am excited about this class, I believe in this coaching staff for the 2011 season, and I believe that UGA needs to do what it takes to keep up with the recruiting efforts of other SEC schools (short of pay-for-play schemes or free Trans Am’s). Heck I’d rather see the other schools work to keep up with our creative recruiting efforts. Congratulations to the UGA staff for a job well done. Cheers.

Can we cut the whole “dream team” thing? I sure hope we don’t try to use that again. Yes, we had a very good class but thats all it is. Its a bunch of HS kids who have potential. Its not like we were a consensus number 1 by a mile, we were a top 5 (after Jenkins hopefully). If they call next year “dream team II”, I may….well, I won’t really do anything honestly except pout.

What is the difference between this 5th rated class nationally(rivals) and the numerous other top 5 classes? They mostly come from within the state of Georgia.
The biggest item for Georgia, their staff, their current players and incoming freshmen is to play as a team and alter their current system to fit the players currently on the roster.
My personal opinion is the Georgia Bulldawg nation will support the staff up until the first big loss and then the same mantra in the previous 3 seasons will heat up again. There will be those who want to hang on to what Mark Richt has done in years long ago and others who will want to see a new regime enter the equation. Either way this fall is going to be a defining season for the current staff at Georgia.
If the improvements in records is not see as a success the 2012 Dream Team will be just that a Dream for Mark Richt and his staff.

I love the word Coach Richt used “integrity”, it goes hand in hand with the word “comittment”! This is an approach that high school coaches need to sell to their kids. UGA has made it clear that they want in-state talent and that they are not going to make an offer to a kid unless they mean it.
Give the UGA coaches credit, they took the high road to recruiting this year, and it paid off, hope it will continue.
I don’t always agree with former Coach Urban M. at Fla., but yesterday on ESPN he made the comment that “he did not like all of the drama that kids put into their late comittments to schools and all the signing day drama. It put’s the schools (colleges) and coaches in a hostage situation going after other recruits, thus, sometimes making a school have a bad recruiting year’! Perfect way of putting it, if a school wants you, they will put it out there for you to take, if you don’t take it then, you might not get a 2nd chance. It would be interesting to know the truth on just how many kids did not take offers when a quality team they liked made them an offer and they did not take it at first, and then they had to go to plan “B”! Signing with their 2nd choice instead of their 1st choice. That happen yesterday and in the past few weeks. (not just in the SEC, but all over)!
Good things happen to good people, Coach Richt and staff did a great job, now let them get to work!

The CMR haters really need to stand back and give the guy some credit for this one. It really was a great idea to bring the class together in such a way that they all felt part of something special before they even signed on the dotted line. Took alot of guts for him to try this tactic as well. All the dream teamers could have ended up at Bama or UF or Auburn and Richt would have had egg on his face. Bradley would have had a field day making 10 so called “columns” out of the debacle had the dream team failed to materialize.

I will say it up front. I am not a fan of Georgia, however I respect Mark Richt as a man and what he stands for. I was born in the state, raised in the state but attended and graduated another SEC school. Once I tell people from outside the south where I am from they bring up the Bulldawgs. Some are knowledgable of the SEC others just assume.
This past year many folks asked me what was up with UGA and as a SEC fan second, I immediate response was it looked from the outside that there was some internal issues along with the demoralizing effect of the AJ Green saga that played a role in their 2010 season failings.
From what one reads on these blogs it is easy to see the bulldawg nation was split up until the past two weeks with all the committments and recruiting news.
Will this change in the future, more than likely. However for the next 7 months almost to the day the Bulldawg Nation is behind Mark Richt, some more than others, but up until any bad news is published the Bulldawg nation is whole again.

CMR is getting this program back on the right track and i firmly believe he will succeed with a few more adjustments like more aggressive in his coaching and eventually demoting CMB back to just qb coach and bring in more a qualified OC. I think the last couple of years CMR and staff got lazy and just sat back and expected kids to come here. you have to get out there and watch these kids play in person and not just on film. I also think CTG and the new AD has a lot to do with these changes that are taking place at UGA. Go Dawgs!

Just to clarify something some one just posted: According to Rivals(Yahoo)
Alabama( Nick Saban) only signed 21 and still finished the Rivals rankings as No. 1.
Even as an outsider that is pretty impressive. Look at South Carolina, Auburn and Ole Miss who all recieved more than 28 LOI’s yesterday and one can surmise the arrows being pointed at the wrong guys.
The UGA class is impressive and according to the Rivals postings the only area of concern was on the Offensive Line Commits, my question is how set is UGA on their linemen in the next few seasons?

Richt should be commended for his approach to recruiting and not oversigning.
On the other hand you have schools that view the NCAA and SEC rules – 85 total scholarships, 25 (NCAA) or 28 (SEC) signees – as guidelines that you need to work around.

If you want to see the dawgs play in 2011, it’s that time of year–donations and season ticket orders. I don’t believe it will be easy getting tickets in 2011 if you aren’t a season ticket holder. I have been now since my college days at UGA–34 years now. Love my DAWGS!! I’m there win or loose. Looking forward to a great 2011 season. Coach Richt is a very classy coach and will continue to do well at UGA.

After all the well-deserved slams we put on CMR this season, he also deserves praise and credit for saying the right things about his standards for the program. We UGA fans can be a bunch of boring, carping armchair coaches who could take these players to a NC every year. It’s not fair, but it’s fun. It’s also fun on occasion to be fair.
I’m pulling for CMR to show us that his standards translate into a hardnosed, competitive, well-coached football team.

Let’s see:
5 star Matt Stafford: zero championships
4 star Knowshon Moreno: zero championships
5 star AJ Green: zero championships
4 star Aaron Murray: 6-7 record as a starter so far.
4 star Joe Cox: need I say more?
3 star David Pollack: One SEC Title,42- 10 career record at UGA,and alltime UGA sack leader.
There is no substitute for talent, but there is star ranking that can desire, dedication, determination, work ethic. I put about as much stock in these recruiting rankings as I do in the G-Day game, which is to say I don’t put much stock in it at all. Rushing for 5,000 yards and 50 TD’s vs. guys who run 5.3 40’s isn’t an accomplishment. Performing at the highest level vs. the best athletes in the nation is.

UGa still owns Florida. Don’t believe me, ask him or Steve Spurrier.
We own them like we do GT and others. UT and ALabama are UGA’s most distant rivals in term of wins. Now, when UT lands on secret triple probation …………… that might begin to change. AU is a very close leader in wins over UGA BUT when the FBI ( now living in the Holiday Inn in Opelika) gets done with Auburn, that too will change.
LSU/UGA? When ZM goes drinking, LSU will end up having to disband football.

Any poster on here who wants to slam another school without knowledge, merit of understanding is more than likely never to attended the school he is protecting. Some of these clowns on here probably never played a down of football in college much less in High School or Junior High School.
I will say it up front, I attended Alabama. I am proud of it, but I have no ill will against Georgia, Mark Richt or anyone associated with the school in Athens. Mark has won championships, has recruited well, kept UGA off probation and tries to lead his players by example. Good Job Mark Richt.
I am proud of Nick Saban on how he conducts business at Alabama, I was misfortunate enough to attend Alabama and work with the Athletic Department during an era of poor mismanagement, rogue boosters and Mike Dubose. As far as I can tell Nick Saban has not knowingly violated NCAA rules, and practices what he preaches to his assistant coaches and players, work harder than others and stay with the system and you will be champions in the game and in life.
Good luck to Georgia, I hope you guys turn it around and I hope we play you in the dome for the championship. And thanks for our defensive coordinator who we all know will be a heck of head coach, Kirby Smart.
To any so called fan of Alabama, maybe it is time to keep our mouths shut, and let our actions on the field speak for itself. If some fan from some other school wants to talk about oversigning, or anything else let the NCAA decide if we have done anything wrong, because whether it is us, Auburn, Georgia or Tennessee our opinions are about as worth as that white speck on top of chicken crap, it is still chicken crap.

There is no “National Championship” in college football and there never has been. There is a BCS champion or an AP champion or UPI champion or a ESPN champion……..but the NCAA has NEVER awarded the wooden plaque with the golden plate to a division 1A football team.
As that is the case, what I want out of Georgia is to consistently compete for the East, consistently compete for the SECC, consistently beat the rivals, and have a shot occasionally to win every game on the slate.
Oh and Lester Piles……….LSU has a losing record to UGA the last 10 years, fewer wins, and fewer actual championships (SECC). I was bored this afternoon so I decided to buy the whole poverty ridden craphole state of Louisiana. Choke on that.

Maybe not, but I’ll guarantee you that he wouldn’t have lost to Colorado and Central Florida. Like Tebow: Pollack’s passion, leadership, and effort would have motivated the other guys on defense as well. If Pollack played on the 2010 team, no way they finish 6-7. I’d be willing to put a $100 on that.
The point I’m making is that recruiting rankings mean nothing. Sure there have been name some big name recruits that have panned out i.e. Herschel Walker. The audacity of these Auburn fans is quite funny. The lack of common sense by the Auburn Fans is quite worrisome. Congratulations to Auburn for winning the SEC and the BCS Championships.
However, getting to my point. Auburn loses its quarterback who took Auburn on its back 6 times during the course of the season and made 30 plus yards on 27 broken plays to save the game, scored 14 touchdowns on either draw plays where he had initial contact in the backfield or on broken plays. He was one heck of a player. No one is doubting that. But the fact that Auburn loses at least 4 out of your 5 starting linemen, and unlike other schools the backups did not get nearly the playing time because of the closeness of the games.
The facts are your best recievers are gone, your O line is toast, your QB is gone, your DL is going to be young, your DB’s are just horrible and you travel on the road to Clemson, Miss. St at home who you barely beat last year, at South Carolina, the very next week at Arkansas, Florida at home,
at LSU, Ole Miss at home and Houston Nutt is desperate, at the Dawg House, and Alabama at home, Not a chance of even being in the picture for the SEC West or the SEC title.
Look at your returning players, your schedule before you start smack talking,
you are closer to 6-6 than we were last year..

On Monday February 7th at 10:30 CST, Mr. Massey, his attorneys and the media will be privy to the second round of evidence, including wire taps surrounding the boosters of Auburn and their vote buying scheme. Does anyone think the delay in the hearing had anything to do with NSD? A conspiarcy theory? Yes, but no one puts anything past Auburn.
The funny thing is the hearing in January produced this famous line. ” We are not ready to reveal our evidence your honor. The information the defendents attorneys are requesting is part of an ongoing second investigation and we are not prepared to share that evidence due to the charges yet to be filed in those cases.” Federal Prosecutors. Asked by the judge when the evidence would be ready to be released and the Prosecutors requested until mid February but the judge set January 31st as the date the Prosecutors should be able to turn over their evidence and all related tapes.
Mr. Massey suddenly became ill last week( Thursday) and requested an extension until the first full week of February.

Wow another english teacher. On this site I do not spell check and I don’t proof read. You are not a person that I need to impress. You are a dawg hater and you made that pretty plain from the get go. Your athletic program’s are a disgrace to the sporting world. It’s funny that whenever a player from Georgia gets into trouble, we dawg fans are the first on here raising he!! and telling our coach to kick his arse off the team, but the instant your team and many other’s player’s do something wrong, It’s oh, he didn’t do that, or the coach is going to make him sit on the bench for 5 minutes or like you guy’s are trying to do now with the whole Cam Newton fiasco. Throw dirt on it and hope no one steps in it. That reporter that was on ESPN a couple of weeks ago hit the nail on the head. When asked, What will the Auburn fans think if they are found guilty of cheating. If you seen the same interview that I saw then you know what he said. Just in case you didn’t though allow me to quote him. The Auburn fans will not care because even if the title is taken away from them, even in their eyes they had to cheat to get it, it doesn’t matter how they got it, it is the fact that they got it is all they care about. They will gladly accept the punishment if they win the title.

Fact of the matter is that Mark Richt scares the crap out of most fans of the Alabama teams.
About five months ago it was said by the Barners and the oversigners that UGA was done and it would come down to Aubie and Bamer for all the best players in Ga. Where did that get you?
Funny how all these fans from the West spend so much time and energy trying to bring Mark Richt down. If my school had a losing record to Mark Richt , I would fear him to.
I’ll take this UGA class over the bought and paid for class and the oversigned class which will be culled by anywhere from 8 to 12 players within two years. Where will Bamas class rank after he shamefuly culls those 8-12 players, nowhere close to UGA’s and it took a mythical national championship and alot of lying for Auburn to equal UGA’s class and after CMR’s worst season in 10 years.

Newton investigation still ongoing

Cam Newton will be taking the field Monday night in Glendale. There’s no doubt about that. But it doesn’t mean he’s out of the NCAA woods just yet.
That’s the biggest takeway from this report by Fox Sports’ Thayer Evans , who spoke to a pair of Atlanta-area contractors who had agreed to do repairs on Cecil Newton’s church in Newnan, Ga., and were interviewed by NCAA investigators the week before Christmas. The good news for Cam is that both said they weren’t aware of any kind of scheme to funnel money to the Newtons:
[Emory] Wilcox and [Eddie] Norris, listed on separate city permits for work to be done on Cecil Newton’s struggling Holy Zion Center of Deliverance, each told the NCAA investigators that they were never asked to deliver nor did they deliver money to Newton.
“There may be something there, but nothing related to me,” Norris told FOXSports.com.
The interviews also did nothing to support the theory that the Newtons had used an illicitly-paid windfall to repair the church, as Wilcox revealed that Cecil had yet to pay him for even minor electrical work. The church has avoided being condemned, a Newnan city spokeswoman confirmed, but is not yet up to code enough to host church services.
Despite all that, Evans’ story illustrates that while the attention into the investigation into Newton’s eligibility has waned, the investigation itself is carrying on all the same. Until the NCAA announces that it’s officially concluded its look into the Newtons’ finances — and that that look produced nothing damning — the possibility will remain that the next overturned log will uncover the improper benefits that would make Cam ineligible for the 2010 season.

How about do you talking on the field and you will not have to recruit that hard? These kids are all unproven at the next level. Therefore, until they win the SEC and a few NC’s, I will not be a believer in this smoke and mirrors gimmick!

Answer these simple questions only an Auburn grad would know.
1: Who gave the commencement speech when you graduated and what year?
2: What was your major at Auburn and who is head of that department?
3: What is the most famous store on the Auburn campus?
4: Who is the most famous Auburn grad?

Auburn University is a proud institution who does not cheat and never has.
Auburn has cheating and paying players so ingrained in it’s history that they named their stadium after a coach who was caught paying players and the team was put on probation in 1957.
Auburn was so proud of coach Pat Dye who had to resign for, guess what, paying players that they named their field after him and reassigned him to another position.
Auburn then continued to pay players, which Terry Bowden only found out after he was hired as the head coach. Bowden was told that he had to keep paying players and he said that after the players who were under contract were finished he would no longer allow it. This effectively ended a good coaches career.
Go ahead and deny it all, it will only show your lack of class. Way to represent your university. WDE!

Has the issue at UGA ever been lack of talent??? The recruiting presents great opportunity but bottom lines is getting W’s. UGA restocks RB’s every year yet has only had 2 guys top 1000 yards since ‘93 with several dissapointments that were “top recuits”. Our own football alumni (Fran T) and people outside the bulldog nation know a good recruiting class at UGA means nothing, in most cases Richt doesn’t “better” these guys.

PacificDawg, why do persist with the fantasy? It’s getting old.
Coach Belin was definitely a good coach. LB play was greatly improved as was special teams play. That’s why he’s in the NFL now, obviously.
To come here and say “…CMR needs to hire….” is laughable; like he doesn’t know how to hire? And for those wondering why it’s taken so long to get an OL coach, Coach was pretty busy recruiting. It takes a lot of focus to get this top 10 recruiting class. Lazy for not concentrating on state of Ga players? I don’t think so. He says they just de-emphasized out-of-state a little and concentrated on in-state. Nothing major; just a tweak in philosophy.
His comments about this class and the process show a man of integrity and class.
See his and coach Garner’s press conference…

And to clarify the in-state vs out-of-state philosophy, what’s wrong with getting a Stafford or Moreno or AJ Green? Hard to argue with getting those type guys. Conversely, one can question whether someone from Texas or N.J. are, or ever have been, “lifetime Bulldogs” and truly committed to Bulldawg Nation. But this year the state of Ga produced more ESPN top 150 than any state except Fla. Pretty cool.
‘Course, we still can go after the Pago Pago kid.

The hype is for the KIDS, Rict knows he is on thin ice, were it up to me i’d fire him as a coach, but hire him as a pastor or a mentor. No doubt his life choices are on target, but his game day choices leave a lot to be desired. Tired of taking a knee when there is time on the clock…talk about a morale killer…sittin there with a phenon QB & WR not even trying…then have the audacity to ask the players to finish the drill..maybe Ralph can help eliminate some of that junk, as well as get that great talent to perform at SEC level for the full game. Talk is over– git r done..or go preach!!!

Interesting update on Vasi Papulu from American Samoa. It appears that he did not fax his LOI to Midway, and on Chip Tower’s AJC blog it is reported that a number of schools are on his final list, led by UCLA and Georgia. If Jenkins signs with us on Saturday, adding Papulu would add great depth at the NT position. Plus, he can also play OT. 6′7 375 is hard to argue with, with his reported agility. Go Dawgs!

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

“…UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC….In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar…”
Funny, the fans and teams that beat us last year ALL thought of em as “great win” or “signature win” or “one of the greatest wins in our history”. I get this from reading the home town or capitol city news from those schools, etc…EG The Denver Post, S.C. Statesman, Arkansas Gazette, Orlando Sentinal, Knoxnews, Montgomery News, B’ham News, Ms Clarion Ledger, etc. And, most of em were hyped leading up to the games about playing THE Georgia Bulldogs. At the end of the season, about every one of em, and ESPN and CBS Sports, etc were surprised and even dumfounded with the Dawgs losing record. So much for not being relevant or blips on the radar.

Hey Jborodawg,
And you point is? The only reason these papers said what they did is because it was a conference win, not the fact that they beat UGAY! Your lack luster team has not won a NC in 30 years so, until you win a few, you will remain on the bottom of the SEC.

Sounds like a lot of the Bulldawg Nation is once again mesmerized with that slick tongued evangalist, da Preacha Man Richt. That koolaid he passes around at communion sure does mess up the mind. Great recruiting class, but remember we now have four–count em–four “best in the state” hs running backs on the same team at the same time. Last year, we had three of them: King, Samuels, and Ealey and we lost more games than we won. If Crowell underwhelms us like the others, you have to ask yourself who coached down these high school five star recruits. Brothers, there’s only one answer: Mark Richt. So when you sober up, I strongly recommend you wait and see how next season actually rolls. If we return to Glory–at least the East championship– then I’m willing to drink a sip of the koolaid myself. But if we continue the downward slide or don’t significantly improve in all aspects of the game, it’s bedtime for Bozo and da Preacha Man.
