ATHENS –- Three non-recruiting bits of news:
Figgins, a rising senior, worked some at fullback in Liberty Bowl practices in December, but the plan now is to make him a “fulltime fullback,” coach Mark Richt said Wednesday. “We think that’s going to be a really good move for Bruce,” Richt said.
Georgia returns a wealth of talent at tight end: Orson Charles, the 2010 starter; Aron White, the 2009 starter; and Arthur Lynch, who redshirted last season. Plus, Georgia signed a highly regarded tight end, Jay Rome, as part of its “Dream Team” recruiting class.
The 6-4, 265-pound Figgins figures to get a chance to contribute more at fullback, where the top two players last season -– starter Shaun Chapas and backup Fred Munzenmaier –- graduated.
“We’ll probably knock that out hopefully in the next few days or so,” Richt said. “For sure by early next week.”
He said there has been a “tremendous amount of interest” in the job. “My phone was blowing up hard after Coach Searels decided to go to Texas. . . . We have some tremendous people to choose from.”
“We’re not doing mat drills,” Richt said. “Some people say, ‘Why aren’t you doing mat drills?’ Well, you can ask the boys why we’re not doing mat drills, because they’re getting a taste of that just about every day with ‘Coach T’ and his strength staff. It’s already paying off.”
Richt mentioned that two members of the 2011 signing class who enrolled this semester, wide receiver Chris Conley and quarterback Christian LeMay, already have gained seven and 10 pounds, respectively, through their work in the strength program.

OK. Now for Bobo’s off season assignment. Watch every minute of video from last season and chart the percentage of times you called running plays on second and long. Discover how prdictable you where as a play caller and learn why UGA was so easy to defend. Also learn that there are plays called screens, (beside wide receiver slip screens) and reverses, (which you used to call from time to time). Write a four page essay on when these calls would be appropriate, and why you are going to show more imagination as a play caller on second and long.

I sure hope they can hire a good OL coach. They have some beast recruited and it would be nice to see them coached right. It has been a long time since I played football for a school, and then only high school, and then only for a short time at that; but I do remember one thing about OL Play. Our coach always figured you had done a good job, when the DL got up and checked behind them to see what they had left on the ground, after they got hit and driven back and down. I want to see that nasty attitude on the OL for the DAWGS. Don’t just block them, push them back and down, and then step on them if they are in the way. all legal of course.

Sounds great, but a 6′4 FB seems offputting. One would think at that height he would lose the leverage battle when hitting the hole, LB’s would just need to get lower and schuck him off. Or simply go at his knees to clog the hole. Anyway the coaches know more than me so whatever they think is fine with me, and how many days are left till Boise St.?

Finally, after all the hype of 5 star skill players we’re getting to the key to winning football games – THE TRENCHES. Our O line should improve and we’ll be back going for our 6th National Championship if not in 2011, but at least by 2012.
Those that think games are won at running back, wide receiver or even QB don’t know crap about football. I know – I would have been a DAWG but I blew our my knee my softmore season of high school, but I’m still a DAWG at heart.

doggenit……..thanks for the compliment. actually did graduate from UGA as Phys Ed major and studied under some old timers like Red Lawson, Earl Fales, Spike Jones, coach Russell, and did coach a little many years ago. Bobo just can’t be so predictable. Run plays to set up other plays. Dooley was great at that. He would run an end-around four times, then the fifth time, run an end-around pass (see Richard Appleby to Gene Washington vs Florida). Besides Cam, that’s what makes Auburn’s offense so potent. They keep you off-balance and are really very unpreditable. Bobo is a good QB Coach, but, I’m not sure your first O-Coordinator job should be at a program like UGA. GO DAWGS!

Sounds like a great idea to me. Moving a proven vet that is unselfish and wants what is best for UGA and for himself is good. MLB’s do not want to block a guy who is 6′4″ 265 lbs at the fullback position. We have to put our best players on the field at all times. We need a monster for OL coach, take no prisoner type attitude. Dominate in the trenches and watch the run game blossom. Every player UGA has needs to look in the mirror and say “I am my brothers keeper” you work hard and push other guys around you to work harder..Show accountability for your team and teammates. Take the sour taste that you have in your mouth from these last 2 seasons and WORK HARDER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE COUNTRY. Well, boys, to say that I’m excited about Georgia Football would certainly be an understatement! Of course, anyone who frequents these blogs knows that I am an eternal optimist, and why not? It’s not like you can switch teams or something
I’ve been thinking about AltamahaDawg’s comments about Richt being given the opportunity by the fans to make (major?) “adjustments” to the program over the course of time, and I believe that this class is a tremendous confirmation from those who really count, the players, that he will be around for some time to come. We kept Georgia’s best in Georgia this year — not just athletes, but leaders with character and a sense of mission. Winning this year will only increase the excitement for the 2012 “Dream Team” and beyond.
dawgerbrown, I hear you and have admittedly said the same thing (sometimes very colorfully) many times last season. However, experience has shown me that “creativity” is a sugar high and won’t last. Execution by disciplined, conditioned, well-trained athletes is much more successful in the long run no matter what play is called. In short, I would much rather see our team resemble a Saban/Alabama than a Meyer/Florida. Just sayin’ …
My challenge to Greg McGarity, Coach Richt, and the entire team this year is to have ZERO arrests, off-field incidents, etc, etc, etc, before the first snap in the Georgia Dome. This is how I will know that we have truly turned a corner. God Bless you Coach Richt — Go Dawgs !!!!

Ok, TennesseeDawg, I wish UGA could have signed a big-time fullback, too. But remember this is not Alabama and UGA only had a limited number of scholarships to offer. One more thing, I have been as disappointed in the results on and off the field as anyone else the last couple of years. But with all that being considered this signing class was nothing less than a miracle!!! Coach Richt and his staff should be commended for working their tails off to get this thing turned around. Also, I think Mr. McGarity should be commended for pulling the trigger on the Boise St. game because that should help keep the team focused in the offseason to know they are not playing LA Lafayette the first game or some other cupcake. That first game also probably helped with recruiting. Will all this work? I don’t know, but at least these guys are trying and these last couple of weeks have helped to ease the pain of a disappointing season. Now let’s go win Saturday with Mr. Jenkins, stay out of trouble, and get ready for Boise St. IT”S GREAT TO BE A GEORGIA BULLDOG!!!!

Amen, Calhoundawg. Games are won and lost on the LOS. We’re a running team; so yes, run on 2nd and long and pick up 5,6, 7 yards. Keep doing that and by the 4th quarter the other team is plain wo out. You especially do that if you have an inexperienced QB who throws INTs. And, don’t jump to the conclusion that I’m saying to do that on every 2nd and long. If you actually watched the games you’d have seen: Bobo did mix it up fairly well; the team didn’t always execute the called play very well; that the QB didn’t necessarily get better as the season progressed. And another one that gets me: that CMR “lacks fire”, just because he doesn’t act like an idiot on the sidelines. I’ve seen him get pretty fired up plenty of times. Go root for a Houston Nutt team if you want constant rantin’ and ravin’.
Back to the topic: hopefully Fig will do well at FB. As great as this recruiting class is and as good a job as the coaches did, I too wonder about not getting a D tackle and a FB. Did I miss something there?
CMR will get this thing turned around.

Yeah. That would be a start. Since when did Georgia not have the guns to punch it in from the 6 inch line? Or the guts to call the play? Hey you ‘hind-sighters’ out there, this constant ‘carping’ on going for it on the 6-inch line has gotten pretty tiresome. Sure we should have gone for it, in hind-sight, but the fact is we had moved the ball down the field with ease on our first possession and it figured that we would be able to do it again and again. Hell, even the announcers called it a ‘good idea’ at the time.
Having said that, and with or without knowing what we know now (that hindsight thing again), for the future, ‘it’s the end of the season ‘bowl game’, not the beginning. What’s difference if we go for it or not? Just roll the dice and let ‘em fall where they may…and enjoy the moment. If we make it, great…and if we don’t then we know we’re in for a ball-game’.

Finally, the right steps are being taken and Coach Richt is acting like a real football coach. Playing like his hair is on fire, what little he has left. Keep it up Coach, you obviously know what to do. Great signing class, much tougher weight room and conditioning, certainly more accountability from everyone, even Figgins to FB. Now, put the final touches on the most encouraging four weeks I’ve seen from you in a long time, put all your pride and loyalty aside, and go bring in the Fridge off of Lake Oconee. Mike Bobo can put his pride aside to and soak up all the knowledge too. Coach Friedgen has forgotten more good plays than Coach Bobo knows right now. The thought of our weapons this year is so dirty(if we get creative), imagine Murray in shotgun with Figgins and Crowell next to him with Orson out @ slot, White/Lynch/Rome in Tight, and any one of our receivers (Tking,Brown,Conley) out wide. So many athletic combos to choose from. Mitchell or Marshall run the “wilddog” formation. Lots of options offensively just gotta use them and execute. D will be stout with our DBs and LBs. I love this recruiting class and they will make UGA better next year in a few positions but you all are fooling yourself if you think these recent recruits are all going to walk on the field next season and make an all SEC team. There may be 3 or 4 of them that make significant contributions (most likely positions are WR, DB and maybe RB). UGA will win or lose next season with the talent they had on campus prior to yesterday.

Sounds like coach T is gonna have these guys ready to do some damage to the opposition! Can’t wait to see how this translates on the field. especially on defense. The D is going to be stellar this year with a badass linebacker corp and (FINALLY!) a pass rush! Hopefully, these freshmen DB’s can complement the veterans in the secondary and give Drew that extra second or two to sack that ass! Junkyard D is back baby!!!

Moving Bruce Figgins to fullback is a good move he also being from Columbus and the best blocking TE on the team. The hiring of the OL coach is the most important hire and we must hit a homerun.Coach Caldwell would have been a great hire but I believe CMR will hire the right guy.We have other positions that must be improved upon.WR DL and RB are also positions that are underachieving bigtime. We have recievers that are not being coached up Brown Wooten King etc and this must end.S and Conditioning looks good Coach T and Coach Kasay are old school hardasses and Thomas Brown is also a beast in the weightroom.I know Kasay and Coach T and they are very serious coaches who take strenth and conditioning seriously and will run you off in a heartbeat if you dont show up for workouts. These kids will not test Coach T or Coach Kasay trust me.

I’m not a “sky is falling” UGA fan. But I’m also not a “UGA will win the National Championship this year” fan. But I have a really good feeling that everyone in this program is going to work a lot harder this year. And I think we will have a very good year. I want to keep Coach Richt. The new age of firing coaches if they don’t win a national championship in 3 years has really made me sick. There is something to be said about keeping stability, especially when you have one of the games winningest active coaches in your program. I don’t buy into the argument “Well Richt hasn’t won one yet, but the rest of SEC has!!” Everyone knows that there is an element of luck in winning one. We went 13-1 in 2002 and didn’t win one. Florida went 13-1 and won two. The only season I am really not happy with at Georgia is last year. 6-7 with everything we had is unacceptable. 8-5 with Joe Cox was expected. Even 10-3 with the schedule we had in 2008 was expected. Nearly everyone predicted we would lose a few games because of our tough schedule. Everyone needs to chill out and see how this next season turns out. If this next year is a disappointment, I will agree a change needs to be had. As a die hard dawg and an alum, I am really getting annoyed with my fellow fans.

Oversigning
February 3rd, 2011
11:42 am
See a lot of dawg fans hoping John Jenkins will sign and become Georgia’s 26th commit
Georgia cannot take John Jenkins because then it would be the dog’s 26th committ. The limit you can take in a class is 25. And as much as the dog fans love to whine about other program’s oversigning I know Saint Richt and the dog fans don’t want to be just another group of hippocrites.
Now inevitably some dawg moron will say that with Logan being run off that it opens up another slot and that’s why the dawgs will oversign if they get Jenkins.- 2 points to be made bout dat. 1) Isn’t that why other programs oversign- to account for natural attrition like transfers to begin with? and no. 2) doesn’t matter how much attrition you have. The max # you can take in a given class is 25- not 26. Regardless of how many players you have overall on scholarship- the max is 85 you cannot take more than 25 in a given class- at least according to dawg fans always whining about oversigning.
If the dawgs accept Jenkins then I guess that just makes you guys a bunch of oversigning hypocrites and cheaters trying to gain an advantage. Just going by the logic of dawg fans anyway.

For the one rude individual on here who insulted another person just for pointing out the predictability of Bobo’s offense at times, I’ve noticed our tendency to run between the tackles on 2nd down following an incomplete 1st down pass over the past 2 years. Even one of the post-game WSB guys (either Kevin Butler or Jeff Dantzler), questioned the wisdom of running that play repeatedly after an incomplete pass. It is simply a pattern Bobo has fallen into, and if you look at those plays, often we were stuffed for a loss or a maximum 2 yard gain, leaving 3rd & long for a freshman QB to deal with. MAYBE, with Crowell and/or an improved offensive line, we can get 4 or 5 yards from those 2nd & 10 draws between the tackles. ….Maybe.
One of the best things Joe T has instituted with our strength & conditioning is accountability (checking in). 2 different Athens trainers had commented about players showing up late, skipping workouts, or having to ask non-football trainers for advice for their workout regimens.

“What are you going to do if we win the Conference, but not the NC? Call for his head to save face for all you “Told You Sos”?”
Only if he beats UF. If Richt falls to 2-9 against UF, I could care less what we win. A Georgia football season cannot truly be considered successful when you lose to UF. If Richt wins the SEC and beats the Gators, I’ll definitely give him his due. It’s time for Richt to prove that he can win without his original coaching staff. It’s time for him to prove that his early success was more him than it was Van Gorder, Pollack and Green.
There are coaches out there who beat UF at least half the time. For some reason they all coach in the SEC West. Let’s get one of them.
Richt has proven time and time again that the can’t coach up a team, and he can’t discipline a team. Check the definition of insanity.
“Fire him and replace him with who?”
How much time do you have?
“…bask in the glow?”
Of what, recruiting? We’ve been basking in that glow for 10 years now. I’d like to see it translated to coached-up players who perform well on the field. Georgia has made Richt a multi-millionaire, so I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

CALHOUNDOG & STEINER: I agree, between the tackles is where the game is won. I would love to see UGA be a team able to move the ball consistenly on the ground too. I’m just saying that when we were face with second and long the last two years we were way too predictable. I understand the idea is to try and pick 4-5 yds and make third down down less challenging. However, most of the time we would only pick up a yard or two at best. Then, we were in third and long. STEINER-you are so right, I don’t, have, or will ever know one/fourth of what Bobo knows. Never said I did. But, when I can watch a game and anicipate what’s gonna be called in certain situations, then maybe it’s time to think about making some adjustments. But, I do feel like an O-Coordinator is better off learning his job a a lower level instead of a D-1 job being his first.

I have been a UGA fan since 76. I guess you were calling for Dooley’s (Auburn Graduate) head after the 79 season? (77 (5-6), 78 (9-2-1), 79 (6-5)? I guess he underperformed and needed to go? Or could it have been that he just had a few years of bad luck with some of his recruits and needed to reload?

UGA did not recruit a fullback probably because the coaches had already decided to move Bruce Figgins to fullback. He’s 6′4″ and 265 or so pounds. That may be big enough to play fullback. They are trying to get Johnathan Jenkins at nose guard. He’s 6′4″ and about 340 pounds. That sounds like a prototypical nose guard to me. Last year our nose guard weighed only 297 pounds and teams consistently ran up the middle for big yardage against us. That’s a big reason we lost seven games. We couldn’t stop a team of grandmothers. If we don’t get Jenkins, look for another tough year.

Great move, moving Figgins to Fullback. Choosing a TE is a natural, because of his blocking ability. He is a good reciever, and can be thrown to out of the backfield. He should also be great in pass proteciton. But at 6′5, I hope the Tailback will be able to see the QB. when in the I formation.

Dooley’s teams didn’t embarrass Georgia fans by failing to show up, like Richt’s teams did against Tennessee in ‘07 and ‘09, Florida in ‘08 and ‘09, and Alabama in ‘08. As well as the rest of the game against Auburn after getting up 21-7 (10-42 blowout after that. You must be proud). Dooley’s teams didn’t have a rash of arrests that have become the norm under Richt. And Dooley didn’t play two guaranteed win cupcakes games a year like Richt does. Dooley played Clemson, not Idaho State. And that was back when Clemson was still Clemson.
I’ll take Dooley any day, td. Win or lose, at least his teams had heart and discipline.
Ed (The Original)

Oh, and how could I forget td – Dooley beat Florida about 70% of the time. And that includes some excellent Florida teams, including ones that would have won the SEC in ‘66, ‘76 and ‘80 if not for Dooley’s Georgia teams beating them. He beat Florida’s no. 1 ranked 1985 team 24-3. It wasn’t even that close.
Richt is 2-8 against Florida, and that includes three games against Ron Zook’s 5-loss teams and two games against Meyer without Tebow, including last year’s mediocre version.
If this is acceptable to you, then fine. But don’t question my loyalty just because I point out the obvious: Richt isn’t getting it done.

Two pearls for the Bdawg Nation today:
1. You’d all better be on your knees pointed toward Mecca praying that John Jenkins announces UGA on Saturday. Without that big slab of beef, Grantham’s 3-4 defense will be no better than last year and that my friends means losing at least as much as we lost last year. It’s all about the hogs on the line. These fancy skill players aren’t crap when they run into bulldozers on the DL.
2. From reading these blogs, sounds like everyone’s fallen off the wagon and once again is drunk on da Preacha Man’s Koolaid elixir. Listen, how many times has UGA under Richt had top 5 recruiting classes? What happens every time? They underperform. Why? Any casual observer concludes it’s poor coaching. Richt’s spots won’t change. He is what he is. He is a loser. He is an imposter who trades on the raw talent of Georgia athletes. He plays his political favorites like Rabbit Mike Bobo who couldn’t win a game of Fantasy Football against Tiny Tim. As much as I love the UGA, I just cannot see him hiring enough competent assistant to compensate for his complete incompetence. I want to hear from all these love it or leave it Preacha Man zombies after we lose to Boise State and South Carolina because of a stupid game plan and poor play calling.
With all that being said, I do take my hat off to the Tan Man and his staff for a great recruiting success. Just reel in Jenkins….

I beleive that UGA will be where Jenkins lands. He will really help out the defense and might just be the missing link, in UGA becoming a top notch team, employing the 3-4 defense. He has a strong character as well, and he is a mature young man. I think that teamed with Drew, the DAWGS are gonna get after some folks.

Phil, I gave 7 examples of Richt’s teams laying major eggs since 2008, and you counter with two bad games for Dooley in 25 years.
I can’t tell if that was a rebuttal or if you were trying to help me make my point.
Look, if you guys are happy with what Richt has given us in the past several years, fine. But you’re not going to sell me. I guess we have different standards, especially for a school that lands top-notch recruits year after year (that didn’t start with Richt). That doesn’t make me less of a Georgia fan – just less of a Richt fan.

7 examples since ‘07, that is.
And you can add the first-half stinker against West Virginia in the ‘06 Sugar Bowl. I admired the effort in the second half, but it looked like high schoolers trying to play WVU in the first half. The poor preparation and lack of motivation was shocking. Unfortunately that’s become the norm under Richt. His response isn’t better execution and discipline, but blackouts and a tacky endzone celebration. I’m ready for Richt to take his act somewhere else, it’s gotten old.

This is the same bunch which that was practically last in D-1 last year in penalties and Destin Dawg wants us to run a hurry-up offense!!! Let’s just run some basic plays, get them down, then we will worry about the trickeration!

I wish we would think about running a 2 tight end set more often this year. We are very strong a tight end. We will be weaker at wide receiver this year. This will help out with blocking for run plays and give us two targets to throw too. Also, I think that Friend will be a good O-line coach. I hope that he can get some push out of the O-line this year too. They have got to block better.
