Richt calls this recruiting class ‘best bunch’ in his 11 years at UGA (Updated)
Mark Richt and his assistant coaches just wrapped up a visit with the 200 or so fans celebrating Signing Day at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. Some highlights of what the coaches had to say:
- Richt: “We all know our [2010] season wasn’t the best, and there have been a lot of things we have had to battle — maybe a little bit more than other years when it comes to recruiting. But I really believe that this class will end up being the largest and most talented and the best bunch in the 11 years now.”
- As for what’s still to come on this Signing Day, Richt said: “We hope we finish as strong as we think we will. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
- After a fan thanked Richt for his work at Georgia, Richt said: “The best is yet to come, I can promise you.”
- Secondary coach Scott Lakatos called Nick Marshall, from Wilcox County, “one of the most amazing athletes we have in this class. . . . I usually don’t get a chance to coach those kind of guys because they’re usually over on offense. . . . He’s very athletic; he’s physical; he’s got good size to him. We’re looking forward to trying to start him off at corner, and I’m sure we’ll have some things to utilize him on the other side of the ball as well.” To which Richt added: “And if you’re going to run a little ‘wild dog’ formation, he’d be ideal for that with his tremendous experience as a quarterback.”
- Richt on signee Malcolm Mitchell, from Valdosta: “He’s a true playmaker on either side of the ball, and he’s a tremendous return man, too.”
- Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on signee DE/OLB Ray Drew, the state’s No. 2 rated prospect: “Tremendous athlete. He’s got size; he’s got length; he’s got pass-rush skills in the sense he’s got initial quickness off the ball. He’s got flexibility to be able to bend around the edge. Shows strength as far as being able to jack those guys up when they come at him. I think he’s going to be able to rush on the edge. . . . We’ll play him at the ‘Will’ position, which is where Justin Houston played last year, and we’re expecting big things out of him as a Dog.”
- Speaking of Drew, who enthusiastically tried to sway other recruits to Georgia, Richt added: “I’d say also his greatest strength might be his character — and his ability to recruit. He asked me, ‘Coach, once I’m on campus, can I keep recruiting for the next year’s class?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He’s something special.”
- Grantham: “I think if you look at this class, the vision that I had when I came here is coming true. I mean, if we get the players in the state of Georgia to stay at Georgia, we compete for SEC championships. “
- Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo on quarterback signee Christian LeMay, who already is enrolled at UGA: “Christian, we think, is an outstanding young man that is a phenomenal quarterback. Some guys want to label him as an ‘athlete,’ but we think he’s a quarterback that has got athletic skills in the pocket and will be able to move around and make some plays with his legs, very similar to … Aaron Murray.” Bobo said LeMay has gained 10 pounds since reporting to campus and “I’ve been very pleased with his work ethic in the weight room. He has impressed not only our coaches down there but our players. That’s what you’re looking for in a quarterback — someone who’ll not only lead on the field but in the weight room and the locker room. . . . When players on the team talk about, ‘Hey, Coach, this Christian LeMay, he’s something,’ that gets you excited. I’m excited about working with him in the spring.”
- Richt said coaches are already at work on the “2012 Georgia dream team.”

Rumblings on BOL have Crowell to Bama. Father sold on Bama. Dont shot the messenger here but it could make since Bama wants to redshirt in order to give Crowell time to properly rehab leg due to chronice leg and knee problem. He would then go into 2012 competing for Number 1 RB slot. Love to have him but have to believe he is all Dawg. I also know nothing about the knee and leg injury. Either way both good schools good luck young man where-ever you decide to take your talents.

Richt’s right on, lot of things he had to battle:
-a QB who couldn’t play beat a winning team
-working out, out of mobiles without proper equipment
-1st year installing the 3-4, without the body types ot run it
-trying to recruit without the support of McGarity and without more than a 3 year contract (unheard of for a coach of Richt’s stature)
-losing your OL Coach due to underpaying him by $133,000
-not being able to get AJ’s 4 game suspension reduced
-losing 4 games by 7 or less

If Bama gets Crowell, everyone just needs to calm down. It is not a Da’Prick Rogers situation. He’s have never once led us on and was never committed to us.
If Georgia whiffs on him, it will be our fault for not having a backup plan to sign at least 1 good RB.
But if Georgia doesn’t get him, we still have 4 scholarship RB’s that are better than people give them credit for considering the terrible run blocking from the danty offensive line.
Boo Malcolm could end up being the man, C.King and Ealey just have to stop being dumb a$$es and hold on to the ball, and Carlton Thomas in reserve. And with Murray having 2 qualified back ups, if Bobo had half a brain he would do designed QB draws 2 or 3 times a game.
We’ll be in great shape if we get Crowell, but we will also be fine without him.
And since his mom seemed to dislike our stategic offer to his bff, I would guess Bama if I had $ on it.
Go Dawgs! At least Crowell didn’t go to Auburn!

not trying to hate but doesn’t he say these kind of things every year. no offense, but CMR’s problem has hardly ever been talent (at least as far as recruiting rankings go). people talk about CPJ always pointing the finger, and he tends to do so, but Richt is just as bad if not worse. putting all your hopes of program improvement on a single class of 17-18 year olds seems pretty ignorant to me. yes, talent is good, but you have to utilize that talent effectively in order to make a difference…

Good recruiting classes are nothing new for UGA. ESPN rated UGA’s 2008 class as No. 5 and 2009 class as No. 6. Those are the players who filled the squad this lousy season. Until these players — and their coaches — prove it on the field, it don’t mean squat.

Mitch Mustain arrested on drug charge

LOS ANGELES — Former USC quarterback Mitch Mustain was arrested late Tuesday night and held on a felony narcotics charge, Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Bruce Borihanh confirmed Wednesday.
Bail was set at $30,000. Mustain has not paid bail and is still in jail, Borihanh said.
The arrest occurred shortly after 8 p.m. PT Tuesday by the West Valley division of the LAPD, and Mustain was later booked at the Van Nuys jail at 10:44 p.m.
Mustain, 22, was preparing for the upcoming NFL draft and had been on campus at USC to work out in the school’s athletic facilities late last week. He started only one game in four seasons at USC, a 20-16 home loss to Notre Dame in November, after transferring from Arkansas in 2007.
The Arkansas native was one of the most sought-after high school players in history.

Worry about your own house brother. Last year I was telling anyone that wouldn’t listen that Auburn looked pretty darn good and had a ton of momentum. With that said, you got your own problems for next year, including a likely NCAA investigation.

Hankie, I haven’t seen anything in print regarding that rumor; nor do I believe that he will do so. He is a proven winner at the college level. Get’s paid a ton of money and loved more than any coach at Alabama, except of course ‘The Bear’.
I personally think he will be a ‘lifer’ at Bama. Now with that said, let him have a couple of bad seasons and that bunch will turn on him, just like that will any where else at most major schools – especially a SEC school.

The days that someone can post on blogs such as this one behind a phony name, such as 5150 or whatever, are numbered. I firmly believe that, sooner or later, one’s real identity will be necessary in order to post on a blog. A truth in packaging law, of sorts. Much of the cheap hate rhetoric seen here and elsewhere would then disappear because most are too gutless to express such hate if they could be identified. Time for responsibility to catch up with freedom on the Net.
Hope this is the best Dawgs recruiting class since the beginning of time. Maybe, just maybe, then the Dawgs might beat the Gators and Auburn in the same year. Oh, well, “to dream the impossible dream . . .”

Bobo knows nothing about coaching a mobile QB like LeMay. He had more yards passing his junior year than most QB that Georgia has recruited, yet people still lable him a “athlete”. Just like Georgia labled Cam Newton a “athlete”. Look at all these “athletes” QB’s winning BCSC in the last 5 years in Flordia, Texas, Auburn.

Given the way things are, I’m absolutely amazed and thankful for the class Richt brought in. Crowell will be nice to get and it will sting a bit but we’ll move on. Not getting Jenkins will sting worse especially if he spurns the Dawgs and goes somewhere for less immediate playing time.
Still a great class considering the circumsances. IT COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MUCH WORSE FOLKS!

I’d like to thank Rodney Garner for spending all the recruiting money wisely this year instead of squandering it on travel expenses. Man please!!! All this sounds good as far as getting the fans intrested. The BIGGEST PROBLEM for UGA is that they RECRUIT KIDS who really AREN’T FANS OF THE PROGRAM! USC, FLORIDA, OREGON, OKLAHOMA, OHIO ST and TEXAS RECRUIT THE MAJORITY OF KIDS who not only want to play college ball, but want to play for their respective schools with pride and tradition. Kids come to GEORGIA for playing time and a shot at the NFL much like TECH’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM. Based upon all of the discipline problems, all about me attitudes and academic performances of its players, Georgia recruits only on hype, size (kids who are big but can’t play a lick) and 40 times (maybe one or two in the low 40’s). Why does Georgia continue to pass on Metro Atlanta talent at running back? Remember James Davis(Douglass)? Jamal Lewis (Douglass)? Storm Johnson (Loganville)? Demmond Dennis (Carver)? and now Marcus Caffey (Grady). They missed on Eric Berry big time and you make some half ass push at Greg Reid (Lowdes) who’s far better than any DB on your roster. Cameron Heyward showed no love and to boot you told THE BEST PLAYER IN THE NATION (CAM NEWTON) HE CAN PLAY TE FOR YOU? GET REAL!!! GA & GA.TECH GAME will still be the STATE’S TURKEY BOWL!!!

Coach G now has amazing LB’s, world class DE’s in Drew, Sterling, Tyson, and with Jenkins, maybe the best NT in the country.
Awesome recruiting job by Coach G, UGA needed him to step up in year 2 with the 3-4, and now, finally, he’s got the body types he needs to run this thing full throttle.

nick marshall is a beast. he shut down zach walker, one of class a’s best players (behind nick of course) in the playoff game against wilcox and johnson co. expect our secondary 2 be better next year, along with our defense in the improving 4-3.
however, southern must be a watch in the fcs, with this walker kid and jaybo graduating, they could open up the passing game even more. i would not be surprised if southern ends up in frisco or chattanooga, where ever they play that championship game at now, with that new coach down in the boro.
i think it is goin 2 be a very positive year for the dogs, and i see us playing in new orleans in one game or another. sUGAr would be nice, but nc would be even better.

Agreed. Southern Cal lost 30 schollies over 3 years to NCAA probation which means that this year they can only take 15. Yet they signed 30 today? That’s nothing short of bizarre.
Its okay to sign a couple over as Saban has done at Bama to account for academic casualties, transfers, medical redshirts, etc. Saban signed I think 2 over the limit last year, 4 over the limit the year before and yet we always seem to end up usually right at our number of 85 on scholly or 1 scholly under the official limit.
But 15 over the limit by Kiffin? I don’t see how on earth Kiffin can take 30 signatures when, even after allowing for a few academic casualties, he will only be allowed to take 15. That’s just plain crazy.

Cam Newton was one heck of a QB but now he’s gone. Your offense will be different this year without him and it’ll be a test with a freshman QB to produce what they did with Cam.
I’d say just enjoy the memories cause its pretty hard to repeat. Not sure where Georgia will be but hopefully i can just enjoy watching college football again and maybe Georgia will get back on track but we’ll see.
None of you can get on here and forecast what your team will do and will have to wait til the season starts but until then i’d keep my mouth shut so i dont hasve to eat my words later.
I will guarantee you that if Georgia is having a good year, i wont come on here and bash your team like a child because im a sportsmen and have better class than that.

College Football is fun to watch and teams like Alabama, Florida, S. Carolina, Tennessee, LSU, and Auburn can beat anybody and we arent ever sure which team will win cause this is the SEC. Teams like Boise and UCF where one team only plays maybe 1 team all year with a good record and the other UCF is a good Div 2 school.
If either UCF or Boise State were in the SEC then things would be different for their season. Yiou know that and we know that.
To compare a UCF team that beat a Georgia team that was the worst team in 25 years is stupid. Georgia didnt care to play a team like UCF because they wanted a better opponent so they couldnt get up to play. I can assure you that wont happen again.
As far as Boise State is concerned….. A good team no doubt, which relies on passing so i have no idea what the score will be once they play Georgia. Georgia can win and i think that they’ll be ready to play. But we’ll see but for you Boise fans to start declaring a victory and a decisive victory at that , i can only tell you that you might be dissapointed.
We’ll just have to see what happens but im not gonna forecast the game and predict a Georgia victory.

Nick Marshall is one of the top players signing this year with UGA. He has records of almost 10.000 yards in total offense with a state record of 103 touchdowns. Not to mention his play at CB. Nick played every down. He has great ability but is even more compeditive. I am afraid LeMay’s days will be limited, if Nick gets a shot at QB. He was recruited as a QB last year but signed as an athlete.

Richt’s “Dream Team” is the exact same #6 ranked team that he’s averaged over the past four recruiting classes. Those 4 and 5 star players got the DullDawgs a 6-7 record. I see no reason to think this latest #6 class will do any better, particularly when Auburn and bammer finished ahead of UGA in the rankings.
