Georgia quarterback-turned-wide receiver Logan Gray plans to transfer to another school for his final season of football eligibility after graduating from UGA in May.
According to UGA, Gray told coach Mark Richt that he wants to play at an undetermined school closer to his Columbia, Mo., home while pursuing a Master’s degree. He will complete his bachelor’s degree in speech communication at Georgia this semester.
Gray’s departure means Georgia will head toward the 2011 season without three wide receivers from last season’s team. A.J. Green left school early to enter the NFL draft, and Kris Durham completed his eligibility.
After redshirting in 2007 and serving as a backup quarterback in 2008 and 2009, Gray competed for Georgia’s starting quarterback job in spring practice last year. He was moved to receiver after Aaron Murray won the No. 1 quarterback job.
Gray considered transferring before the 2010 season but opted to remain at UGA. He played in all 13 games last season, starting none and catching nine passes for 105 yards and one touchdown.
Gray said in a statement Tuesday that he hopes to play his final season “where my family can attend all of my games.” He thanked Richt “for giving me the opportunity to be a Bulldog the last four years and [for] sticking beside me throughout the whole experience.”
“I would also like to thank my teammates for everything,” Gray said. “They are like another family to me, and I know I will be close to several of them for the rest of my life.”
Richt wished Gray well, saying in a statement: “I want to express sincere appreciation to Logan for his many contributions to our program the last four years. He’s been an asset to our team and program as both a player and student, and we wish him nothing but the very best.”
Coming out of high school, Gray was ranked the nation’s No. 7 quarterback prospect by ESPN. As a quarterback at Georgia, he completed five of 12 passes for 31 yards and two interceptions — all in 2009.
Under NCAA rules, a football player who transfers to pursue graduate studies for academic reasons can be eligible to play immediately at his new school, rather than having to sit out a year as is ordinarily required.
Rebuilding the receiver rotation will be a high priority for Georgia before next season. The Bulldogs’ top returning receiver is Tavarres King, who started five games and caught 27 passes for 504 yards and three touchdowns last season.
The Bulldogs return three other wide receivers with limited college experience –- Marlon Brown, Israel Troupe and Rantavious Wooten –- and one who redshirted as a freshman last season, Michael Bennett. In addition, Chris Conley — a 2011 recruit – enrolled this semester and will participate in spring practice. The Bulldogs are expected to sign several receivers to letters of intent this week.
Georgia also expects major pass-catching contributions from a deep group of tight ends, including Orson Charles and Aron White.

georgia fans are too stupid to realize that this loss is bigger than some high school football player committing to them. They’re all giddy and obsessed over some 17 year olds who are signing with a coach with one year left at the school. Gray was their best option for next year at WR.

Whatever. He should not have even been on the field. It seemed CMR played him because he felt bad for him… This is big-time college football and favoritism has no place. I think i can count the number of “decent” plays he made in his tenure. I got nothing against the guy, he might be the nicest person in the world… but he is a byproduct of poor recruiting or poor coaching. Because if he is on the field, you got major problems on the field as well. And that played out the last 3 years.

@Boobman – Seriously man, you need to lay off the hashish. If Logan Grey was our best WR option, then Tavarris King and Wooten must have been kicked off the team. Grey should be commended for his team first mentality, but he was by far, NOT OUR BEST WR OPTION next year. In fact his transfer goes a long way to help our program get a start on getting another kid in here for the long haul. Can anyone say Charone Peak?
To hear others state Michael Bennett is our next stud at WR is concerning. Not bc I don’t want him to be, but bc he hasn’t taken a snap in the regular season… Surely one of the above mentioned is more primed for the #1 receiving slot.

I believe there is a rule that would allow Gray to play immediately if his new school offers a Master’s program that is not offered at UGA. In any event, Gray always came across as a smart person, and I am confident he checked out his options.
Gray was considered a top flight QB coming out of high school, and he represented himself, his family and UGA with class. We all know he would have liked for things to have worked out differently but he didn’t complain and kept trying to get on the field and contribute. Damn good dawg!

MoDawg…I agree completely. Don’t bad mouth Logan; he took his lumps and played pretty well as a backup; caught some clutch passes. And he was a decent possession return guy; pretty sure-handed. I hope you’re right about Bennett but Gray would have easily stayed his final year if he felt Richt would have used him. I don’t think you can deny he was under-used last season. His few catches showed some real talent. With Murray under pressure his throws were not always the best.
AJ got geometrically more balls thrown his way. Gray could have been a true double-threat from the air but no one on the sideline could see that.
In any case I wish the kid well and hope he lights up the boards in Mo!

BooMan calls Georgia fans “stupid”? Logan Gray is our “best” option at wide receiver? Gray is a good special teams player and he will be missed for sure. But if BooMan thinks Gray is our best option at the WR position, even with our losses, then he either needs to pull his head out of his proverbial “arse” or be a fan of another sport that is not quite so confusing to him like croquet. Troupe, King, Brown, Wooten, or even O. Charles sliding out in the slot w/ 4 really good TE’s potentially on the roster for next season and the possible addition of Jay Rome.

Good luck Logan, but we have plenty of quality wide receivers that need to step up. Marlon Brown, Rontavious Wooten, Israel Troupe,Tavares King, all 4 or 5 star wide receivers, Think that Malcolm Mitchell will contribute. Along with Orson Charles and Aron White, plenty of Targets for Murray.

Gray was completely the wrong QB for a CMR team. He was a top spread offense QB coming out of High School. Mizzou player of the year, all kind of awards, but for running the SPREAD in high school. CMR could not diagram a Spread O play if a back dive at the aquatics center hung in the balance.

He got enough playing time, to get a job in Atlanta from some alumns. Dont blame UGA. hE got far more from the contract than uga did. Again, best of luck. Must be nice to get a free degree from a great school, chance for a free masters. Yes, that equals free debt. He only had to practice football, lift wights, run, attend class, provided tutors, training table, hottest girls in the south, oh yea catch a few punts, throw a few footballs, and the best have some people and fans praise him for being talent wasted by the coaches or consider ga best option at wr. I sure LG got a full stove pipe full of smoke blown up his tail to come to UGA. “You are going to be the man!” You gotta earn it baby. Believe me after tomorrow no one is going to know who you are until you prove something. and yet another talent unfulfilled...
February 1st, 2011
3:03 pm
Logan Gray…another talent gone to waste…here in lies what is wrong with this program…Fray had sub 4.5 40 speed and also had zero chance of ever being the starting QB at UGA, yet the coaching staff made no attempt to utilize his size, speed, and talent. It wasn’t until LG stated to make waves that “he moved himself” to wide receiver. This guy had the size, speed and knowledge to make an outstanding FS or CB, even more so than the wide receiver that he eventually became. Would he have been happy being switched to another position(?) may be, if he was told that he had no chance of being a starting QB, but telling him that he had the size, speed, knowledge, and overall make-up to become a SEC caliber player at a different position. I’m sure that a Saban, Miles, Spurrier, and a few other coaches who could sell this change for the his good and the good of the team. If any athletic player is riding pine and knows the only way to get on the field is to switch positions, well either they make the most of the opportunity, or they transfer and follow their dream of playing the position of their choosing. Glad LG had the wherewithal to look out for his best interest last year, and again taking the bull by the horns and getting away from this mess called UGA football. Have at it and the best to you Logan.

Logan was not the result of poor recruiting…as one earlier post mentioned. He was the #7 HS QB in the Nation and an ESPN 150 player. He simply came in behind Stafford and then lost out to Cox and then Murray. D1 Football is like that. I bet he goes D2 or Mid major D1 and he could compete for a starting QB job..A lot of programs will be happy to have him. We have much more talented WR’s and TE’s than him – time to use them Bobo!!

Logan is an example of a Bulldog I will always admire, one who came to UGA to play a game AND ALSO to get an education!
Logan is also an example of why those who get so excited about recruiting must temper that excitement with a healthy dose of reality.
Logan was rated at one of the 10 best high school quarterbacks coming out of high school. At UGA, the recruit watchers were beside themselves over landing this “can’t miss, future hall of famer” who would lead the Bulldogs to the promise land of another national championship.

Miss Dawg,
The kid had talent, but it was not a fit for the type of offense Richt runs. It is widely known he is a pro style guy, where Gray coming out was either the #1 or #2 Spread Offense QB in the nation. That is where the issue is. So in essence it is poor recruiting, if you do implement a system that will allow the kid the best shot at playing QB with his skill set.
Mr. SEC
February 1st, 2011
3:48 pm
We should had saw this coming; Logan Gray was good at what he did,”Fair Catch Signals”. He did add a few receptions on offense this past season, BUT this is another problem CMR will not have to deal with next year. L. Gray has carried around a chip on his shoulder this season because he was not the starting QB. He made the statement at the begining of the season that he would do what ever it took to help the team! But his sense of not being in the spotlight at QB was like a cancer, even CMR had to talk him into staying with the team. His attitude help add fuel to the fire that helped a program come apart. As far as playing for anothe D-1 school somewhere else, No, I hope you don’t. You are no better than these who thought they could enter the draft early, only to find out they were not ready. You can not be considered a true Dawg untill the end of your eligibility in my opinion; you are wanting to bow out in a cowardly, pouting way. We gave you a free education, what did you give us, nothing! Grow up, you got beat out of your position by a better player. We do not need any more trouble spreading cancer at UGA.
Good Luck in your education, but you do not have my best wishes to ever play college football again!
I pitty the business that ever hires you for a position; if they decide to hire someone else with greater skills than you, I guess you will go to the break room and pout!

#9 Josh Nesbitt
#10 Logan Gray
The 4-stars that didn’t really pan out are Korn, Nichol, Chris Forcier
The Pro-Style QBs from 2007:

#2 Ryan Mallett

Logan Gray was never handled properly and it started with the Matt Stafford obsession. Followed by the A.J. Green obsession (only occasionally punctured by Kris Durham making another impossible catch).
Logan Gray threw 12 passes for UGA. Want to take the top 25 Hall-Of-Fame quarterbacks and track their first 12 passes in college? You really think it’s that easy?
One comment I love. He threw a pick against UF and the commenter flushed him. Guy threw an interception. Obviously sucks as a football player. All the work and history of play since he was 6 years old out the window because he threw an interception against Florida. Gee, UGA wouldn’t have any quarterbacks left if that was the test of greatness.
Guy threw an interception. Wow. Take him out and shoot him.
I don’t know so I won’t pontificate on the topic but I suspect that Logan Gray is an exceptional athlete who fell prey to a disease too many players at UGA are contracting lately. It’s called “Non-Coached-Itis” — which I just made up, but you get the idea.
I choose to believe that, from what I’ve seen of his play and from the insights of people who have played with him.
Of course, he could just be a bum taking up a scholarship slot, as many here suggest.
Perfect vision must be wonderful.

Hey Cville if you are going to call someone else , “stupid,” the correct grammar is, “you’re stupid.”
If you had taken 8th grade English you would have learned that ,”your,” is a possessive pronoun. The correct word is, “you’re,” which is a contraction of,” you are.”

a prime example of Richt’s in ability to use the talent he recruits. I don’t know why all this talent this year wants to play for him, but at least there will be a lot of talent for the new coach.

Good luck to the young man. I am sure he realized he was not going to ba NFL material after his first year at UGA, so he did the right thing and got a good education. Now he wants to finish out his college football closer to home, and get his masters degree, and let his family see him play. Anybody who can’t see that this young man will have a bright future, is missing out on something. Possibly brains, but the way some folks make comments on these blogs, that should be a given.

It’s not too far of a reach to think LG timed his decision to free up another scholarship in time for signing day. The guy stuck around last year when UGA was thin at QB and has always been a team player which is something every program can’t have enough of.
Any real UGA fan here slamming on Logan Gray is a fan we could do without.

The next 10 years of the Mark Richt Era as head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs will be better than the last 10 years. The first 10 were good and the next 10 will be great years for Bulldog fans. McGarrity will be patient and not look to make his mark and it will payoff BIGTIME. You heard it hear first. Just like you heard Drew and Rome were Dawgs and that Crowell was not going to Auburn here first. UGA has paid their dues and now the storm is passing and we will reap our harvest. So many people on here cannot see the forest for the trees they are focused on so to say. Just watch and see and then apologize for the harsh criticism and lack of faith to your program that you (dont) support in the tough times. Its not too late to change your perspective and thinking and support the coach and your school and be a part of the great future that is about to take place. Maybe East champs in 2011 and people want to fire the coach because we lost Stafford and Marino and more and had Cox at Qb in 2010 then a freshman in 2011. Even Bear Bryant and Vince Dooley had losing seasons more than once but you cant handle it because UGA had one? You better grow up or you wont be able to handle life’s storms you must go through. Richt will make it through the fire without smelling of smoke. Watch and learn how to deal with adversity and keep a smile on your face and joy in your heart while doing what is necessary to make it through and come out the other side stronger and better than before. Watch and learn boys on how to become a real man…..

UGA has beaten the Tide and VERY recently if you will go check…2007 26-23 in TUSCALOOSA. Bama 41-30 in 2008. That is the last 2 times….before that UGA won in 2003 37-23….put that in your elephant trunk….And to UGA fans, Richt has been in 3 SEC championship games winning 2 in the last 10 years…..Only the best coaches have done that in the SEC….Alabama has ONLY been in 2 the last 2 years, the LAST 2! Florida and LSU have been in 4….3 of Florida’s were with Tebow…Mark Richt is among the best coaches in the nation you morons and he will soon have us in the SEC championship game again, maybe in 2011! Some many people on here dont have a clue!

He is only going to get better…UGA would be FOOLS for even thinking of getting rid of him…He has one of the best coaching records over the 1st 10 years of his career EVER…! and coaching in the SEC! What had UGA done before him and prior to Herschel….nothing much since 1975! Dang people, get a clue! We should be so thankful to have Mark Richt as head coach at UGA and as LONG as he will have us!

just love how other schools fans, come on here and take a shot uga. Gray seemed like a great guy, but I dont know him as 99% on this blog do not know him, but what is the big deal about what happened here. He got a degree and he is leaving to play football and get another free degree. Again, what is the neg. and big deal to this story. I dont care why he left. I dont care if he was the best athlete on the team and so on and so on. What I know is this: he didn’t produce for UGA and I dont care about the rest. I dont care if it was his fault or the coaches. Doesnt matter to me. In my opinion, it is better to give money to a young player than to a 5th year. It just makes better sense. To me that is the bottom line. This happens all the time. Again, who cares why he left. It is what it is. If I was Richt I would bring in other players and tell them they may want to look somewhere else. This would help for the players who you reached on in the recruiting process or who are not working hard or staying out of trouble. If it is “coaching” problem than CMR will eventually be shown the door. Again, he got more out of his contract with UGA than they did. Dont feel sorry for Gray, he has gotten a degree from a fine school and is leaving to play football and get another for free. At least, CMR allowed him to get a degree and play some football, unlike Saban when he shipped Jackson off the Ga State, without degree. Having said that, I can see why he did that, looked what he did for State.

I graduated from UGA in 1983 and ‘86. I was in the Superdome when we beat Notre Dame; I was there when we lost to Pitt; I was at Clemson where Jeff Pyburn through a pass into a heavy wind and it went backwards (no arm strength); and I remember a tough game against Alabama at night on national television around ‘85….
But college football has become an awful monstrosity. Devoted totally to money and prestige. The attention paid to recruting is but one example. The previous post in here that football is so big now that remaining loyal to a player like Logan Gray isn’t possible…well, wow! I doubt I will ever again attend a college football game. I’d rather go to something where the concept of student athlete still exists – where an athelete chooses a school because he/she loves it, and then decideds to go out for a team. I don’t know if there are any such sports left…maybe at the NAIA level.

Logan is but another “casualty” of a wasted talent attributable to the “sorry practice” of coaching down good athletes by this monstrosity of failure call the coaching staff a UGA. This wonderful kid has been dwelt a horrfic injustice by CMR and will never recover from the damage done to his potential. This should weight heavily on the consciences of every coach and the supporters of UGA football. SAD SAD Waste Waste Sorry Sorry.
