Georgia QB-turned-WR Logan Gray to transfer

Georgia quarterback-turned-wide receiver Logan Gray plans to transfer to another school for his final season of football eligibility after graduating from UGA in May.

According to UGA, Gray told coach Mark Richt that he wants to play at an undetermined school closer to his Columbia, Mo., home while pursuing a Master’s degree.  He will complete his bachelor’s degree in speech communication at Georgia this semester.

Gray’s departure means Georgia will head toward the 2011 season without three wide receivers from last season’s team.  A.J. Green left school early to enter the NFL draft, and Kris Durham completed his eligibility.

After redshirting in 2007 and serving as a backup quarterback in 2008 and 2009, Gray competed for Georgia’s starting quarterback job in spring practice last year. He was moved to receiver after Aaron Murray won the No. 1 quarterback job.

Gray considered transferring before the 2010 season but opted to remain at UGA. He played in all 13 games last season, starting none and catching nine passes for 105 yards and one touchdown.

Gray said in a statement Tuesday that he hopes to play his final season “where my family can attend all of my games.” He thanked Richt “for giving me the opportunity to be a Bulldog the last four years and [for] sticking beside me throughout the whole experience.”

“I would also like to thank my teammates for everything,” Gray said. “They are like another family to me, and I know I will be close to several of them for the rest of my life.”

Richt wished Gray well, saying in a statement: “I want to express sincere appreciation to Logan for his many contributions to our program the last four years. He’s been an asset to our team and program as both a player and student, and we wish him nothing but the very best.”

Coming out of high school, Gray was ranked the nation’s No. 7 quarterback prospect by ESPN. As a quarterback at Georgia, he completed five of 12  passes for 31 yards and two interceptions — all in 2009.

Under NCAA rules, a football player who transfers to pursue graduate studies for academic reasons  can be eligible to play immediately at his new school, rather than having to sit out a year as is ordinarily required.

Rebuilding the receiver rotation will be a high priority for Georgia before next season. The Bulldogs’ top returning receiver is Tavarres King, who started five games and caught 27 passes for 504 yards and three touchdowns last season.

The Bulldogs return three other wide receivers with limited college experience –- Marlon Brown, Israel Troupe and Rantavious Wooten –- and one who redshirted as a freshman last season, Michael Bennett. In addition, Chris Conley — a 2011 recruit – enrolled this semester and will participate in spring practice. The Bulldogs are expected to sign several receivers to letters of intent this week.

Georgia also expects major pass-catching contributions from a deep group of tight ends, including Orson Charles and Aron White.

CPJ Fan, Has your school had at least one player from your school play in the Super Bowl for the last decade like UGA? I didn’t think so. Also, how many Super Bowl MVPs have come out of Tech?

Gray was a 4-star, Rivals Dual-Threat in the 2007 class. A lot of familiar names in that particular group:

#1 Tyrod Taylor
#2 Cameron Newton
#4 Stephen Garcia
#8 Kodi Burns
#9 Josh Nesbitt
#10 Logan Gray

The 4-stars that didn’t really pan out are Korn, Nichol, Chris Forcier

The Pro-Style QBs from 2007:
#1 Jimmy Claussen
#2 Ryan Mallett
#3 John Brantley
#6 Pat Bostick
#7 Jarrett Lee
#9 Steven Threet

Paulus, Lalich, Marve and Coleman were the others.

Never ceases to amaze me, the level of football expertise (sarcasm intentional) on these blogs. Best athlete on the UGA football team (not according to me, according to coaches who actually coach these players, and the players who played with him).

Logan Gray was never handled properly and it started with the Matt Stafford obsession. Followed by the A.J. Green obsession (only occasionally punctured by Kris Durham making another impossible catch).

Logan Gray threw 12 passes for UGA. Want to take the top 25 Hall-Of-Fame quarterbacks and track their first 12 passes in college? You really think it’s that easy?

One comment I love. He threw a pick against UF and the commenter flushed him. Guy threw an interception. Obviously sucks as a football player. All the work and history of play since he was 6 years old out the window because he threw an interception against Florida. Gee, UGA wouldn’t have any quarterbacks left if that was the test of greatness.

Guy threw an interception. Wow. Take him out and shoot him.

I don’t know so I won’t pontificate on the topic but I suspect that Logan Gray is an exceptional athlete who fell prey to a disease too many players at UGA are contracting lately. It’s called “Non-Coached-Itis” — which I just made up, but you get the idea.

I choose to believe that, from what I’ve seen of his play and from the insights of people who have played with him.

Of course, he could just be a bum taking up a scholarship slot, as many here suggest.

Perfect vision must be wonderful.

Hey Cville if you are going to call someone else , “stupid,” the correct grammar is, “you’re stupid.”

If you had taken 8th grade English you would have learned that ,”your,” is a possessive pronoun. The correct word is, “you’re,” which is a contraction of,” you are.”

Good luck to the young man. I am sure he realized he was not going to ba NFL material after his first year at UGA, so he did the right thing and got a good education. Now he wants to finish out his college football closer to home, and get his masters degree, and let his family see him play. Anybody who can’t see that this young man will have a bright future, is missing out on something. Possibly brains, but the way some folks make comments on these blogs, that should be a given.

@ CLS Dawg,

I believe the linebacker you are referring to is Tre Jackson. He was committed to Tech until CPJ pulled his scholarship last week after he visited FSU. Who knows what’s going on? Let’s do this! Go Dawgs…
