Georgia QB-turned-WR Logan Gray to transfer

Georgia quarterback-turned-wide receiver Logan Gray plans to transfer to another school for his final season of football eligibility after graduating from UGA in May.

According to UGA, Gray told coach Mark Richt that he wants to play at an undetermined school closer to his Columbia, Mo., home while pursuing a Master’s degree.  He will complete his bachelor’s degree in speech communication at Georgia this semester.

Gray’s departure means Georgia will head toward the 2011 season without three wide receivers from last season’s team.  A.J. Green left school early to enter the NFL draft, and Kris Durham completed his eligibility.

After redshirting in 2007 and serving as a backup quarterback in 2008 and 2009, Gray competed for Georgia’s starting quarterback job in spring practice last year. He was moved to receiver after Aaron Murray won the No. 1 quarterback job.

Gray considered transferring before the 2010 season but opted to remain at UGA. He played in all 13 games last season, starting none and catching nine passes for 105 yards and one touchdown.

Gray said in a statement Tuesday that he hopes to play his final season “where my family can attend all of my games.” He thanked Richt “for giving me the opportunity to be a Bulldog the last four years and [for] sticking beside me throughout the whole experience.”

“I would also like to thank my teammates for everything,” Gray said. “They are like another family to me, and I know I will be close to several of them for the rest of my life.”

Richt wished Gray well, saying in a statement: “I want to express sincere appreciation to Logan for his many contributions to our program the last four years. He’s been an asset to our team and program as both a player and student, and we wish him nothing but the very best.”

Coming out of high school, Gray was ranked the nation’s No. 7 quarterback prospect by ESPN. As a quarterback at Georgia, he completed five of 12  passes for 31 yards and two interceptions — all in 2009.

Under NCAA rules, a football player who transfers to pursue graduate studies for academic reasons  can be eligible to play immediately at his new school, rather than having to sit out a year as is ordinarily required.

Rebuilding the receiver rotation will be a high priority for Georgia before next season. The Bulldogs’ top returning receiver is Tavarres King, who started five games and caught 27 passes for 504 yards and three touchdowns last season.

The Bulldogs return three other wide receivers with limited college experience –- Marlon Brown, Israel Troupe and Rantavious Wooten –- and one who redshirted as a freshman last season, Michael Bennett. In addition, Chris Conley — a 2011 recruit – enrolled this semester and will participate in spring practice. The Bulldogs are expected to sign several receivers to letters of intent this week.

Georgia also expects major pass-catching contributions from a deep group of tight ends, including Orson Charles and Aron White.

why else would he leave? Let me see, he wasnt going to play that much. Good or bad, really who cares why he left, he or cmr or both made the decision. Move on, has a degree, now has the opp to get a masters and play football and he is a G club member for life. Tell me the neg?

@FLA DAWG He wanted to play QB but stuck around a year because there was no depth at QB and got a little playing time at WR and PR and finished his degree. He was gritty but don’t see it as a big loss. I am telling you WR Michael Bennett is going to be the stud next year!!

Congrats Logan! I hope you get to play QB in front of the home folks and you finish your masters so you can be an SLP.

BooMan, I have to take back my statement, “…Only one poster said it was good to clear up a scholarship…” Must have been 10 people posting at the same time I was. Otherwise, I stand by the rest of my post.

MoDawg…I agree completely. Don’t bad mouth Logan; he took his lumps and played pretty well as a backup; caught some clutch passes. And he was a decent possession return guy; pretty sure-handed. We’ve got several scholarship players who’ve never played a down…well maybe in the last minute of games. Logan wasn’t one of em. He contributed in an admirable way.

Booman- Logan was an ultimate team player that ultimately just couldn’t find a position. Fact is he is not going to win a Heisman or be a top 5 pick. He will play probably at a FBS school and finish his master’s degree and that is quite an accomplishment.

He was a good guy and made some plays here and there. No reason to bad mouth him at all but let’s stay on earth

Best of luck to Logan Gray, good all around guy and a team player. He’s getting his degree (something so many kids overlook today from the University of Georgia) and pursing another one after that, he’ll go far in life.

It didn’t work out for him at UGA (to be QB 1) but hopefully he’ll land it at a smaller school close to home.

He probably could have started at QB for tech since they run that high school offense.

Mark rick prolly got word to him that he can no longer do the “seniority” thing with his job on the line.

sincrely Joe Tereshinski, Thomas Brown, Joe Cox, and the musical chair system at RB and WR the last 10 years.

In terms of production at the WR position- this is not a loss at all. It just didn’t work out for him like he had hoped. DGD anyway and good luck wherever he ends up.

GA DAWG,

I hope you’re right about Bennett but Gray would have easily stayed his final year if he felt Richt would have used him. I don’t think you can deny he was under-used last season. His few catches showed some real talent. With Murray under pressure his throws were not always the best.

AJ got geometrically more balls thrown his way. Gray could have been a true double-threat from the air but no one on the sideline could see that.

In any case I wish the kid well and hope he lights up the boards in Mo!

Logan Gray is a class act. You can tell that from his comments. He has to be disappointed at how his career went at UGA and probably regrets not transferring last year when he had the chance. Hopefully for him he will find a good team in Missouri and get some playing time.

At least, unlike the QB from bama who transferred to Ga State, at least Gray left with a degree and a chance to build on that. I guess he should say thanks to UGA. He def got the better end of the contract!

If Gray goes to say, Mizzou, and turns out to be all-conference, that will tell us a lot about Mark Richt’s tenure at UGA. If the recruiting rankings are any indication, there’s been a ton of wasted and underdeveloped talent.
