Help wanted: UGA posts vacancy on football coaching staff

You’ve got a few more days to apply for Stacy Searels‘ old job.

The vacancy on Georgia’s football coaching staff was officially posted on the university’s employment website Friday. The posting says applications will close on Feb. 4.

(While no one expects the job to be filled by someone who learns of it from perusing the website, it nevertheless is required to be posted for five business days.)

The posting doesn’t provide much in the way of specifics about the job, defining it simply as a “replacement” position for an “asst football coach.” Among the lines left blank: salary range and work hours.

Job duties include “evaluating and recruiting qualified student-athletes … whose athletic and personal skills make them highly competitive in the SEC and nationally, and whose academic potential makes them good candidates for a meaningful academic experience and graduation at the University of Georgia….”

Interested, anyone?

And speaking of Searels, the offensive line coach got a $135,000 raise to leave UGA for Texas. Click here for more on that.

Snake Doc, speaking strictly on my behalf, I could not care less about anybody eating crow. Nobody is right or wrong, because not a single person in here knows that will happen. Whatever happens, I guarantee you it would not have been as simple as anyone in here would have said, and there will be factors most of us are just not aware of. It’s all pure speculation. The general tone is purely a matter of outlook, not knowing anything or being right.

Would be nice if it were possible to have conversation in here for the next 8 month , where every single post does not have to included the caveat “let’s fire the coach” and it was actually okay to talk about the football team.

Calhoundawg that crow eatin can go both ways so you may want to save your Ranch Dressing come half way thru next season. Big Dawg, Columbus Dawg and Mobile Dawg have all made very valid points concerning CMR and the state of this program. I’m not going to repeat what they have said, but it’s pretty clear that we’ve seen what CMR is and isn’t. I hope I’m wrong, but just don’t believe he is the leader that will get UGA to that next level that we all want to get to.

But all this is just fun on a blog. The fact remains…no more excuses! Win NEXT YEAR! PERIOD. To me that means getting to Atl. But will probably mean 10 or 9 wins to most others.

Let’s see… we were paying Searels $290.000. I’ll do it for half- $145,000.

Fire Richt and also fire Fox-by god they have not won an SEC crown in two years he has
been at
UGA. Fire everyone associated with the football team and the basketball team. Off the bandwagon for Fox. Fire the gymnastics coach-he did not win a Championship last year.
Fire the new volleyball coach they had a bad practice.
Now the responders can start in with their usual rhetoric(look it up).

Fire Mark Richt!

We have got to quit giving up 500 yards and 35-40 points to WIN anything in the SEC. Period. Until that happens, we’ll be an average 6-8 win football team.

Agreed JB but in the bowl game, the defense actually looked as though they were starting to get it. 10 points allowed and we lost. That one was on the offense.

The difference between UGa and the elite teams is the trenches. Especially on the defensive line. After the Jan Kemp fallout Ray goff lost about 20 defensive players. Blame saint vince for that. we should have let vince go and kept ERK!UGA has never recovered from the Jan Kemp fallout. then we finally got a defensive coordinator in van gorter and there again we got rid of the wrong coach because he wasnt a “saint”. Until UGA can stockpile big athletic linemen on both sides of the ball we can forget rising above mediocrity. Skill players are a dime a dozen, if the blocking breaks down you have no chance….period

I don’t put a number on the wins next year, neither would McGarity. I expect to be competetive in all areas of the game, that’s the number one thing that we haven’t been. I expect a team to show up looking prepared to play which we haven’t. The W’s will take care of themselves if we’re ready to play. We won’t ever beat a good UF team every year, but we shouldn’t get blown out by 30 or 40, ever. Same with Bama, UT, everyone. Showing up not prepared to play my friends is all “coaching” in one way or the other.

One of the phylosophical questions that McGarity probably asked himself was: If I did need to hire somebody for the hypothetical HC position at Georgia for 2011, would I consider hiring Mark Richt given the information I have on him, and the answer to the guestions he has given me in the “interview” over the past few weeks. I beleive that he concluded that he would. If you don’t think so, then consider what UF, AU, TN, (whom I would call about as close to contemporaries as there is) has done recently.

with that thought on the trenches, being weak, and undermanned. Considering that UGA has had good coaching, plenty of skill playes. Just not enough horses on the lines of scrimmage. How many 5 star defensive line prospects has georgia secured in the last 20 years, how many prototype D ends. with the exception of the stinchcomb brother package deal, how many prototype offensive linemen? Why cant we sign som of those guys? they would make average skill players look great. Just skill players will never produce champions. Big hoss-es will.

I would imagine McGarity has dissected the entire program thoroughly. At this point I see McGarity as the CEO of this program, with CMR as President of Football Operations. I think McGarity has provided the kind of Leadership that has helped Mark Richt see things more clearly in terms of what he needs to be successful. That means I agree with your 12:38 AltamahaDawg.

I don’t know DecDawg at this point. If the CEO deems that things are indeed going in the right direction he might survive 5. It just depends on how strong everyone else is, and we don’t have a solid foundation to start from. The Liberty Bowl loss was bitter, but this last recruiting class if it finishes up as we hope, has diluted the taste some. Work, Mobile, Work….

Mobile, my point is that with the talent on this team if it loses 5 games again then it clearly is not improving in those areas that you and others have so effectively pointed out as the problems with this program which point ultimately to the man in charge and to his style and personality. I actually believe that coach G will get the D going next year and it will improve though will struggle early against some tough competition. I also believe McGarity uncharacteristically put Boise on the schedule as a test for CMR. So does he pass?

Point is that CMR is on the hot seat and we all know it. That’s why these blogs are mostly about it. It’s not negative to discuss it. It’s health, most good, intelligent dialog. I just happen to think CMR’s days are numbered. I don’t think he’s going to change. You can’t teach an old dawg new tricks. Sorry, he’s a good coach, but not a great one. We deserve a great one. And I’m willing to take the risk, put the trust in our new AD to find the next great UGA coach. It’s going to happen sooner or later. I just believe that sooner is better than later. But I admit that I’m just a fan with an opinion.

The recruiting class means nothing. UGA almost always recruits well no matter who’s here. Its what you do with what you got. CMR has shown he can be a good OC (here and FSU), and can be successful with a coaching staff he inherited or already in place. What he’s not proven is he can be a CEO type coach, managing his coaching staff and players…and the clock is ticking on the latter aspect…

Unfortunately Dec you can’t count on this recruiting class to have much of an impact. 79, your thoughts resound deeply in my concern. I honestly believe McGarity is strongly influencing Richts decisions at this point. He’s giving him an honest chance to succeed, without strong progress in the direction of “strengthening this program” I think he’s gone. I still believe he needs significant help strengthening his “coaching staff”. I’m with you, I don’t think he has the intangebles to do it all at this point.

In my corporate career I will never forget what my Sr. VP told us in a Leadership Class, “backbone is one thing that can’t be taught”.

“…there is still this vocal minority of morons talking about firing? ”

This sentence right here is all you need to know about why UGA is second tier. The fact that Richt has lost 12 games is 2 years, and he STILL keeps his job, should tell you that my school doesn’t strive for excellence. Period. The way I see it, the “vocal minority” isn’t wrong to expect and demand more from a man who is making over $2 MILLION a year!! How much do all of you make??? The rest of the schools in the SEC think we are idiots not just for keeping Richt but for not even CONSIDERING to get rid of him!

What’s it going to take convince you “Gravy Train”? Will this team have to go 2-10 or 4-8 before you think its time for a change? I’m sick and tired of seeing the Auburn’s and LSU’s( teams that have equal or less resources than we do) win National Titles while my team becomes more irrelevant by the day! UGA should be on the inside looking out instead of the outside looking in with regards to the National Title picture. Anyone who settles for less is not a true fan in my opinion.

Like a lot of you guys said, I think McGarity should be the key to getting this thing turned around and back on track. I have the feeling that Evans wasn’t all that mature when it came to doing anything with the athletic dept. Nor do I think Evans was that focused on doing his job. Kind of a figure head that offered no constructive criticism or help to Richt.

That said, I am applying for the OL job. Can I use you guys as references? I think that all the knowledge I have picked up from you guys and gals over the years will prove very beneficial to having the best damn OL in the country. As I type I am getting ready to start studying the cutting edge solutions to developing the best OL possible.

2004 it’s not that those like Gravy think of settling for less either. They just actually believe CMR will get UGA there. It’s just their opinion, and some of the optimists do have some sound arguments to back it up. But rest assured that our AD will not have their eternal patience, CMR is not going to have some epiphany, and SEC will not turn into the ACC. So what will actually change that next year…the UGA head coaching job.

Like your passion though. Just ease up on your fellow Dawgs a bit. We all do want the same goal.

I don’t know about Searels, but I’m not surprised. I’ve heard the Garner-Grantham thing before. Although I love Rodney Garner and appreciate the heck out of his contributions and loyalty to Richt and Georgia, I’m not surprised at this either. Concerning Bobo; when the plays work, you’re a genius, when they don’t you suck (Phil Fulmer style of coaching). Bobo is a hell of a QB coach AND recruiter. Let him do what he does best. Offense is not our problem anyway. The rest of this makes sense because this “Renaissance’ occurring at Georgia (look at our recruiting class) under McGarity is wide-ranging and substantive. For example, the rumors of Ralph Friedgen gracing our beloved campus may be truer than we thought. All of this does make the heart beat just a little faster though, doesn’t it? All I know is that CMR ain’t goin’ anywhere anytime soon. Can you say, “Boy-see?” Go Dawgs !!!!!!
